    I have a senegal and mine is so human… he laugh everytime i make jokes,, he mimic our conversations and so many words and daily sounds. He is very calm, we can leave him in his cage for weeks and he doesn't seem to get bored. I don't think we can do that with a caique. One of the reasons we went for senegal is because they are much cheaper .. we paid $600 when it was still a baby. (14 years ago) . The only downside of our senegal is that he doesn't let anyone except me pick him up.. he will bite your finger if it isn't me who is picking him up… my daughter would like to play with him but he doesn't want to be touched by anybody but me. I can do almost everything , i can even put my finger in his bec and it will never bite me. I wish he was more social.. he's a one man pet.. I also have a conure female also one man pet, which is insanely noisy, so noisy in fact that i gave her to my parents.. to thanks them for all the time they yelled at me in my childhood lol,. I had some encounters with a caique at the local exotic pet store.. i used to play with that caique on many many occasions.. i agree that they are very fun and funny. But oh my god they are freaking expensive up front. As of 2022, a baby caique goes for $2200 . The initial price is the main reason i couldn't afford a caique.

    I have 5 Caiques, 3 black headed and 2 white bellied. Mine are fully flighted and have liberty in most of the house. I think it’s important for people to know Caiques are non stop. They need tons of toys and lots of interaction with their human. They can be nippy. I have never been bitten but my husband has. I do have 2 that have mastered pinching. They can be loud. And, they are not great with other species. They have been know to bully or dispatch new bird. For all of the negatives they are my chosen species. They are very affectionate with me and keep me laughing.

    Thanks so much for sharing your birds w us and the comparison. Im still trying to choose between the two. We have a macaw but desperate for a little smaller bird after ours passed.
    I love how you have them housed and that their cages are so nicely decorated. Some people go too over the top w all the toys and colours. Thats the one thing I hate most about having birds. Everything is in all these crazy colours lol. Also some ppl overdo the toys that the birds are left with no space to move. Better less and changing it up often. Thanks for the comparison. Super informative. 🙏🏽

      I used to get short pieces of 2x4s from construction sites and wood shops. They were scrap to be tossed out anyway. I'd use a hatchet to splinter into 3 to 5" pieces the width of about 2 fingers, then attach to the inside of the cage with white jute. They'd be tiny pieces in no time. I'd also use the paper egg cartons, split in half, stuffed one half inside the other half on top of the cage with jute. It would be all chewed up, in 2 days or less. This is a long time ago, before there were widespread
      dangerous diseases everywhere on 'industrial egg farms'. Also, take care to get clean lumber.

    I have an 8 year old Senegal parrot and he is very sweet and quiet but loves to play. He is best friends with my mother's 2 quaker parrots and they actually feed and preen each other but we would never allow them to live together because we don't wanna take the chance of something bad happening. They are only left out together under supervision. Unfortunately my Senegal parrots does not get along with the conures and will fight with them.

    • @iamdoctorpapito
      @iamdoctorpapito  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for the question! I think the simple answer is that they would love for you to be around ALL THE TIME! But we know that’s not possible for most people. My wife is usually home with the kids for now so we’re good and we also have more than one bird (10!). Having said that there are ways to keep them busy. Some people play the radio for them, position there cage near a window (make sure there is no draft), or give them plenty of toys, etc.
      Good luck!!!

      Not good for the bird. They are diurnal so they are up with the sun and down 12 hours later. If you intent to be "away" during most of this time you should get two and provide them with plenty of toys. Caiques are much less "work" if you have two. I have three that all live together and sleep together and they were all purchased YEARS apart. The first one is the most comfortable around humans because she got the most attention. I have heard some dont get along but that is not my experience. They live in flocks in the wild and I know many people who have more than one living together. The Santa Ana zoo used to house about 50 in the same aviary. They have since paired it down to about 5-10 in a much larger walk-through aviary but you get the idea. Your Mileage May Vary.

    Just started watching but wondering what interactive bird you’d recommend for a family with kids. Ages 7 and 3. I owned cockatiels as a child and also an Indian ringneck male a few years back but I was worried about the mess when my first born was crawling. Now that they’re a little older I’m wanting a bird but not sure if we should go with a cockatiel, caique or conure. I know sun conures are loud but are green cheeks quieter? I love the personality of the caique but not sure how friendly they’d be with little kids. What about Quakers? Guess I’m just trying to narrow down with very kid friendly yet interactive and not the loudest .

    • @iamdoctorpapito
      @iamdoctorpapito  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for your question! From my experience conures make excellent pets for families. Suns are super loud. Green cheeks are quieter and are also very friendly. They come in a lot of different colors/mutations. Blue throated conures are a bit more rare but also make fantastic pets. They are similar sized to suns but a lot quieter.
      Good luck!!

      @@rashasarandah1695 sorry to but in, but I breed caiques and they are super friendly BUT if you mix caiques and small children there will be blood and band aids - guaranteed. They can be great pets for adults that respect them and know their body language though.

      Unfortunate that that is the experience of many people and completely unncsessary in most cases if you know what you need to know (which most people dont) Follow these 2 rules:
      Stage one: step up and step down train your bird with rewards and never pick them up, grab them or force them to do anything with your hands.
      Stage two: Once you have perfect trust and respect from your bird and they know you wont make them do anything they dont want to do or force yourself on them when they are shying away from you (even subtly), then ONLY grab or pick up your bird if they dont shy away from your hand even the slightest bit as it tentatively approach them.
      Follow these 2 rules and the "hormonal" (# human copout for bird protesting against lack of respect for their free will) and "biting" are 2 words you won't have to use. The result will be the opposite of what you would expect as they will tolerate more and more being bundled about and handled because they trust and respect you. If you fail to follow these rules the baby will tolerate it until puberty, but when puberty comes you are gonna cop it. :)

    • @GlitchScatter
      @GlitchScatter 3 года назад +1

      @@amosk2416 Nope. Hormones override them completely in most cases. Exceptions can happen but even the most seasoned professional Caique owner (bird tricks for example) get the beak from these little puberty demons. The exception is not the rule. If you get a caique prepare for a hormonal hurricane in place of the sweet little clown you knew. That's not to say they are eternally possessed by evil spirits but breeding season can be very.... painful. lol

      To be honest, the most sociable birds I have owned are my Sun Conures. If you can handle their noisy nature they are your best bet!!
      Both the Caiques and Sens do choose a favorite gender and definitely prefer the person dealing with them on a daily basis. Maybe Sens are a bit less sociable than Caiques.

    Do you have trouble with your caique plucking? My male plucks probably due to sexual frustration... but I don't know. He seems to stop plucking in winter time. It makes him look pretty rough during most of the year because we have short winters. I love my caique & he is uncaged hanging out with me most of the the day time hours & only caged at night. He seems only marginally interested in his chew toys. I guess he might be bored & plucking because if that too? He gets chop & pellets & a small bit of almonds or pecans daily.

    • @imcryst4l
      @imcryst4l 3 года назад

      If you dont already, I would keep a set number of toys in the cage and then rotate to different toys every now and then. Same with their diet as well. This prevents them from getting bored and deciding to pluck. Although the plucking could be for various reasons, I would consider rotating their toys and diet if you dont do that already.
