this video reached an audience it was not intended for - beginning users. this video is for advanced users looking to achieve higher quality in their recordings. if you have NEVER used OBS Studio and are looking for a tutorial on how to begin, please seek advice on a different video. TY & good luck!
Despite what you just said, i am a beginner user, and this helped me a whole lot, and if not for you, my footage would have stayed choppy AF. THANK YOU!!!
I've tried streaming OVERWATCH with i5 4690k + GTX 970 G1 Gaming , 8GB ram etc and my stream is super laggy unless I put the game on LOW , but the stream still lags sometimes in team fights... just can't figure out what's the problem cause I've watched streams with Overwatch on worse rigs. ( 2500bitrate , on veryfast etc)
Man! Finally an OBS tutorial that works! I'm glad I can continue to make my videos better quality. I'm kinda tearing up, its been so long since I've had this good quality. You're working the mega-miracle over here!
Also, in the settings Video tab, make sure to set your Base (Canvas) Resolution, and Output (Scaled) Resolution to your desired video res (in my case: 1920x1080). If your resolution is different for each, you will get issues with scaling and res. Anyways, thanks ImCoty for the quick and helpful tutorial! Settings worked perfectly in OBS 19.0.3.
At 5:16 , I don't have that tab of Bitrate and buffer size, like you do. On mine, it just ends at, "Custom Muxer Settings". As seen here: gyazo.com/49e211bb8ad48f957365a2634d00c89e Is there a way I can access that section of settings? I'm on OBS 0.16.5 for Windows
Thanks for such the fast response, but I only have the option of 'Custom Output (FFmpeg)'. When I select that, I have the video bitrate settings, but I don't have the buffer size or anything below it, as seen here gyazo.com/939c23c16ec4c435cae3a52f8dc8d915. Would I be able to find it at a different place in settings?
Tune is for example if your encoding a movie = Film, if a cartoon or anime = animation the "Tune" is more like a lense filter they also include this setting in Handbrake encoding software.
So...you said that depending on your CRF and how low it is (I set mine on 7) the slower RUclips will process the video once you upload it? That means it takes hours just to upload a 20min + video because you want the quality, yes?
Hey buddy! Do you have any tips on how to use the "Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0"? What type of computer do you use for "Streaming" to have good quality? What specifications should I have?
Just starting out. Can you share what kind of graphics capture card you are using? I have 2 cameras that we want to use to film services at church and we have a dedicated PC with sufficient power and RAM. But I'm wondering if we need a specific kind of graphics or video capture card to make OBS work well.
Would I be able to adjust the individual volumes of each audio track, independently of the rest? More importantly, can I do so AFTER the recording has finished? Like, for example, if I decide after recording that the audio from the game is so loud I can't hear my own commentary, could I reduce the volume of the audio from the headphones without touching the audio from the microphone?
I recommend recording in .mov if you edit your videos in premiere, as premiere can't sync audio and video in .mp4 files, don't ask why. Vegas can do it no problem, premiere seems to be perma-bugged, however .mov is perfect.
So I can record a video on any website with the audio sound that's in the vid right? Btw,do u u no how to save/download embedded videos cuz there are some videos I want to save on my phone to watch. (Videos on any site except RUclips such as CNN) thanks! Great video btw!
I would love to know a way to see if my computer is fast or if it is not? Where can I check all the CPU stuff to find out what bitrate will be best and other settings. Thanks
If you could help me with an issue I am having. I am wanting to capture a portion of the screen... I can't seem to do that in the newest OBS/ I.E. Streaming a Nintendo DE emulator. Attempting to make the top screen larger and a separate source than the bottom screen.
hello, ImCoty. if you just want to record a game and not stream live, do you still need the obs? also, if you stream live, and recored with prv 2 do you need to upload it or does it automatically upload when you are live?
Question, on the rescale output for streaming. It looks like your options are different from mine. yours looks like 12?? x 720 , my option is 1366 x 768. is this still ok for twitch? Assuming as long as i don't change it to over 1080?
Hey nice vid, I just downloaded OBS studio and I usually like to preview before i start streaming but I'm noticing OBS studio kinda automatically is in preview mode. There is barely any FPS drops though so I don't think it's an actual "test preview" can you help me out on how to do a simple preview? Thanks
This was done on an out of date version of OBS Studio, would you mind helping me out? I'm on .15.2; .15 has some new settings that weren't covered in this video. (There are no other OBS Studio .15 tutorials that I can find anywhere, you're my only hope!)
Hey! Nice and well explained tutorial BUT why the output directory should not be on an ssd drive? Or should it be on the same partition as the software installation?
JayGypsy, The reason is a SSD generally has much less storage space than a similarly priced HD (disk hard-drive). For example, I have a 4TB (4,000GB) harddrive that was about $100. A 1TB SSD currently costs around $250.
Great video! helped out a lot but ive been having a problem where i try to start streaming and it says failed to connect to server. ive changed which server i use and it doesnt help. any suggestions?
Above bit rate i have an option called rate control. The options are CRB, ABR, VBR, or CRF i was just wondering what there were and if you knew and why you didnt have them.
I don't have the lower window in the recording options, starting at about 5:05, but I am using v0.15.4... Does that make a difference or am I just missing something?
I was wondering, what setting would take effect on the audio for playing youtube videos/music in the background of the stream? i've been having trouble getting it to have it not freeze numerous times in the middle of playing a song , and make my actually computer lag. i have a brand new computer and its a intel pentium and quad-core. so i know its not my computer.
You forgot to mention the Video tab. More specifically, the Downscale Filter. What do you use for yours? I know it is very much dependent upon how much your CPU can handle. I'm just curious of what you prefer.
i definitely kept the video as specific as possible and definitely left out alot of key elements (i plan on touching on at a later date) i personally game in 1440p, so thats my base resolution(canvas size). and for recording i sometimes do 1440p, but usually downscale to 1080p. and for streaming i do 720p obviously. and use lancoz filter whenever you can.
My computer more then meets the requirements for OBS, but when it is started, not even recording, my games slow down and the sound is lacking - can you help plz...??? Also my output recording options ends after rescale output!
Thank You. I tryed to Live Stream Attack on Titan(Steam) and is working but it does have seconds delay on twitch but the game works fine. Do i need to get the Elgato for that or is there another way to fix it?
@ImCoty I did the exact same as you did, checked your specs on twitch of ''gaming pc'' i noticed i had the same cpu i have the I7 6700K and have the GTX1070 but when i start recording cod: Infinite warfare it says turn settings down, EDIT even when i put it down to crf 15 it still stutters? any idea what this could be?
Hey great information. I have mine set for 3 profiles 1080p, 1440p, and 4k. I recorded a video in 4k yesterday uploaded it to youtube but on youtube it's not 4k is it something I did wrong with my settings is it a setting in youtube? I tried going to the gear in the video in youtube but it only goes to 1080p
Hi! Thanks a lot for your vid! My downloadspeed = 11834,9 bps and uploadspeed = 18169 bps (or download 94.22 MBps and upload 142.62 MBps. I'm not partnered with Twitch yet. Which settings would you recommend? The same as in your vid? P.S. I have Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB
I'm new to this program, but my mic is very quiet and I'd like to record my audio separately. Does obs offer this option or do I need to use another program?
at 5:37, I don't have the other options that you have after I select CRF instead of CBR. It gets rid of my previous settings and gives me different settings to make. Help?!
I have two screens, one is my primary display on which I play the games, the other is a secondary display in which I have OBS open so I can see it all the time. In OBS Studio I have set up a scene with several sources which are neatly stacked next to each other in the preview window (webcam capture, a text box and of course, the area where the game is displayed) and while I want to play the game in fullscreen on my primary display, I want the window capture (yes, because I can't seem to capture emulators like Jnes or Snes9x with game capture so window capture is my only choice) to remain in a cropped and re-sized state in OBS on the other. This used to work in the old program, but everytime I open up a window-capture in OBS Studio and then go fullscreen on the primary display, it does the same on the secondary display as well; expanding the area in which the game is displayed and effectively covering most of the other sources in the preview window as well. How do I make it so that switching the actual game to fullscreen doesn't affect the scene in OBS Studio?
i've been trying this with my i5-4690K cpu and R9 390 gpu but i cant seem to find the correct settings for me :(. i try to record (not stream) cs:go in 720p60fps and the recordings keep having stuttering in them. the stuttering goes away when lowering the settings in obs but then the quality goes down the drain... i dont think that my cpu would be that bad right? also, what are your video tab settings and what does the "high" profile do on the recording section? appreciating any help i can get :)
what should you do if OBS says youre losing frames from encoding lag? I will record a test video, the quality will be fine, but I'll be missing tons of frames.
Total newbie question but, how do you get a full screened face cam in OBS Studio??? The fit to screen option doesn't really work the way i want it too.
Hey Great vid! I'm having trouble when I go live with audio. When I play back I am muted can't hear myself on the live. Do you have a video with help for the right audio settings?
So far best video i've found that's recent. I suggest throwing "2016" in the title, since your video was lower in youtube results for me. Most videos i saw were 1-3 years old. Thanks for the help!
Hello Coty. I'm just curious in your video you stated setting up your video path to a drive "Other than a SSD drive?" My question is what's the problem with using an SSD? Wouldn't that in fact be more efficient?
When I try to record my games at 720p60fps, the fps seems to be dropping massively in the recorded video. The games still run at 60fps while recording, but the recordings suffer from very low framerates. Maybe it's a video bitrate issue?
Hey Coty, can you please help me out....i have been trying to record some games using avermedia portable capture card and obs but no mater what i do the recording freezes, pixelates and goes nuts ....i have been searching for help for nearly a year and am no further forward. I have a 1.33ghz octo core dell precision m6500 with a 1gb video card and 16gb ram. i have an ssd c: and a raid setup for my d: obs in on c: file storage is on d: i have tried your settings for recording and it still wont work. If i close obs and start again its good for about 10 mins and then goes nuts. My cpu usage goes through the roof...99%. I have the avermedia RECentral too and the only way i can get the video capture to even show up in obs is to start RECentral at the same time......its driving me crazy.....can you help a newbie out please sweetie...pretty please :-) XOXOX
@imcoty. I wanted to get some plugins in the OBS.. But i cannot find the option ANYWHERE. Do you perhaps have an idea how to fix it? or better said.. where to find it? (My current version is 0.16.6 )
obs is open source so there are tons of plug-ins out there. probably some youtube tutorials on how to install them. should be a plug-in folder inside of your obs parent folder :)
Hey, first of all nice video, but my question is, evertime I try to stream games like CS Go the stream starts to lag like hell, you can't really watch it~ but when I play different games it always works great. Do you have any solution for that? not sure if it's on my processor, havin an i5~ my internet should be able to handle it
Is there a way to schedule your recordings? For instance I want to record my screen between the hours of 1AM and 3AM but I want to be sound asleep while the software schedules the recordings on its own. If this software doesn't do it does anyone know of a screen capture or DVR type software that does this?
At 5:14 I don't have the option to check on use CBR. I just have rate control that I can change to CBR and CRF but when I change it to CRF my bitrate goes away. Any help?
Going to try this We're wanting to live stream our backyard (birds, rabbits, squirrels) Do I have to record no matter what? I just want to stream with low settings (cause I freaked my poor pc out with setting i did wrong!!! 😩 help please!!
This videos earns you a new subscriber. This is hopefully going to make it so I can stream everything and make it look a hell of a lot better now! Thanks for making this video!
+ImCoty can you help me please? i have a problem with video. i can record with ubs but whem im done it just show me a black screan with audio. Can you help?
Sup Coty! I would like to stream out the audio i create from my virtual dj or serato. how do i set up obs studio so that folks can hear me dj straight from my computer instead of from speaker to mike like i do.
Hey Man is there a way you can stream to facebook live at all yet if so can you make a tutorial on how to make that happen i seen someone doing that and it made me really really really want to do it there and its literally cracking my brain because on OBS you need a stream key but when i go to the Page settings videos and create live stream i get this error saying that its not ready yet any info on what i am doing wrong ?
Coty, so in the video settings tab in studio, should the base resolution be 720 instead of 1080. I have my base at 1080 and my output at 720. If anyone else knows feel free to let me know!
this didn't quite help me. i'm trying to record a video that's actually watchable, but for some reason, OBS still records my gameplay as not a video, but a picture that changes every four seconds. is this related to the fact that the "stopping recording" icon never changes unless i press the "stop recording" hotkey again? because that would explain why it records one twelfth of the whole intended video.
Please, help me if you can. I'm new to this software. I'm editing a video on Premiere Pro and trying to stream it via OBS. But it does not show the video playing window from Premiere. So people see the screen but not the on Premiere Pro.
this video reached an audience it was not intended for - beginning users.

what type of camera do you use

Yeah, I was kind of wondering why he repeated what he said

awesome video, but the settings look a little bit different on output advanced recording, Im missing the CRF part for example?
What camera did u use to record yourself in the video? And hows does it look so clear? And hd?
could not have been more perfect timing. i just deleted obs because audio and stuff wasnt working. thank you so much.
Also, in the settings Video tab, make sure to set your Base (Canvas) Resolution, and Output (Scaled) Resolution to your desired video res (in my case: 1920x1080). If your resolution is different for each, you will get issues with scaling and res.

change the 'standard' to 'advanced' my dude
Thanks for such the fast response, but I only have the option of 'Custom Output (FFmpeg)'. Kevin Charoensri shit im sorry! change back to standard then change the encoder to x264 and see if thats sorts it out mate
I played with some of the settings on there, and it seems to be working smoothly. Thank you so much for your quick help on Thanksgiving!
Kevin Charoensri
In the making of this video, did you use OBS studio? If so, please make a video or in-depth explanation "how".
Tune is for example if your encoding a movie = Film, if a cartoon or anime = animation the "Tune" is more like a lense filter they also include this setting in Handbrake encoding software.

He uses a 2003 blackberry javelin 3000 camera 🎥
great video dude. what camera are you using to film this and do you need and black box to connect it?
Just starting out. Can you share what kind of graphics capture card you are using? I have 2 cameras that we want to use to film services at church and we have a dedicated PC with sufficient power and RAM. First time watching ImCoty videos. They're pretty nice and professional, keep it up !
What webcam do you recommend? Im looking into the logitech C930e, C920-C, C922, or C920

Yo homeslice! You're using version 13.2 and I'm 15.2. The bitrate isn't there on my version dude. What do?
If you could help me with an issue I am having. I am wanting to capture a portion of the screen... I can't seem to do that in the newest OBS/

What Camera are you using for this video? Freakin Awesome quality!
Coty your quality and lighting is amazing! What lighting and camera do you use?

For example, I have a 4TB (4,000GB) harddrive that was about $100. A 1TB SSD currently costs around $250.

Great video! helped out a lot but ive been having a problem where i try to start streaming and it says failed to connect to server. ive changed which server i use and it doesnt help. any suggestions?

i try to record (not stream) cs:go in 720p60fps and the recordings keep having stuttering in them. the stuttering goes away when lowering the settings in obs but then the quality goes down the drain...
i dont think that my cpu would be that bad right?
also, what are your video tab settings and what does the "high" profile do on the recording section?
appreciating any help i can get :)
Do these setting work for recording pc games or using a capture device for recording playstation 4/xbox one
what should you do if OBS says youre losing frames from encoding lag? I will record a test video, the quality will be fine, but I'll be missing tons of frames.
Any ideas of why I recently have gotten High CPU usage in both OBS and Task Manager? Have been able to stream perfectly before...
CRF doesnt bring up bitrate tabs but VBR does and has a CRF tab too. Should I use that?
Hello there! Great video! Could you tell me how to 'pause' recording?
cody running mac el capitan with obs and c920 having audio video sync issues. think you could help?
I NEVER KNEW THERE WAS A NEW OBS WTF THANK YOU
ok now watching
Hey i am just wondering, if i have the exact same settings as you what bitarate should i export as from my editor?
Thanks for making this Tutorial. You made it easy to understand OBS settings for streaming.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I saw an INSTANT change in my quality and now I have super SUPER smooth recordings! Liked, Shared, Subbed!
So far best video i've found that's recent. I suggest throwing "2016" in the title, since your video was lower in youtube results for me. Most videos i saw were 1-3 years old. Thanks for the help!
np man! thanks for the tip
Hello Coty. I'm just curious in your video you stated setting up your video path to a drive "Other than a SSD drive?" My question is what's the problem with using an SSD? Wouldn't that in fact be more efficient?
Don Patterson in terms of write speeds sure, but I don't think constantly writing and deleting footage is something you wanna do on an SSD
I don't see why not? I mean it's just flash storage with like infinite writes!
I write audio and erase audio constantly in my DAW using SSD's
it has infinite reads writes will kill a ssd which is why you want to send to a traditional HD
Thank you dude! Using the exact settings in the video just made a test recording look exactly like what it does in-game!
I have the avermedia RECentral too and the only way i can get the video capture to even show up in obs is to start RECentral at the same time......its driving me crazy.....can you help a newbie out please sweetie...pretty please :-) XOXOX
doing the opencl=true kept me from streaming. once i took that off i was able to connect?
odd that it gave you that issue - replying so more people can find the problem if they're having it!
yeah it was weird, could it be that it only works with twitch over RUclips?
Do you have any solution for that? not sure if it's on my processor, havin an i5~ my internet should be able to handle it
what camera do you use, your video looks great :)
Is there a way to schedule your recordings? For instance I want to record my screen between the hours of 1AM and 3AM but I want to be sound asleep while the software schedules the recordings on its own. If this software doesn't do it does anyone know of a screen capture or DVR type software that does this?
What do you suggest for the "VIDEO" Tab?
When do you want to select more audio tracks? I see you just kept it at 1.
+ImCoty What the setting in your advanced and video tab? Would really appreciate it
Coty what camera do you use for your vlogs and stuff?
At 5:14 I don't have the option to check on use CBR. I just have rate control that I can change to CBR and CRF but when I change it to CRF my bitrate goes away. Any help?
you just don't worry about the bitrate there-
I don't even have a CRF option.
Going to try this
We're wanting to live stream our backyard (birds, rabbits, squirrels)

Everything seems good. But that black screen you see, mine has that and when I try to record the whole screen is black. How do you change this?
can you live stream and record at the same time with this settings?

For x264 options what is it suppose to be? Im hearing him say CL equal and shit but I cannot see that lol.
openCL=true
Dennis W Thank you!
@@dennis60kg wait what I i can hear him saying cl but he has "opend=true" what
yeah but when its typed there its opend=true on his video, so im comfused on the CL part
Coty, so in the video settings tab in studio, should the base resolution be 720 instead of 1080. I have my base at 1080 and my output at 720. If anyone else knows feel free to let me know!
base resolution (canvas) size at 1080 is great and then downscale is to 720p on stream.
then you can leave it on 1080p recording
when I switched to OBS Studio it switched to 4:3 and can't figure out how to get 16:9 back. Any recommendations?
OG's will remember his first obs guide!
this didn't quite help me. i'm trying to record a video that's actually watchable, but for some reason, OBS still records my gameplay as not a video, but a picture that changes every four seconds. is this related to the fact that the "stopping recording" icon never changes unless i press the "stop recording" hotkey again? because that would explain why it records one twelfth of the whole intended video.
My Setup isnt the greatest, do you think I could stream CS?
I have an FX6300 and GTX 960
My Interent is 20 down and 17 up
why does my OBS studio have a relative outputscale of 1980x1080? it stops at 1280
what about the video options? fps etc. isnt that for streaming?
Hi, kinda new at this... trying to setup a scene :P do you have a tutorial on that by any chance ? Thx
Please, help me if you can. I'm new to this software. I'm editing a video on Premiere Pro and trying to stream it via OBS. But it does not show the video playing window from Premiere. So people see the screen but not the on Premiere Pro.
Bro, can I use this setings with AMD VCE encoder? If not, Do I really need to change anyhing if I'm using that encoder?
