Dr. Ornish should be nominated for the Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology! He nailed the root cause of so much heart disease and how to prevent it!
It all works. I had angina, could barely walk my dog. I had lower back pain, knee pain, memory problems, edema, fat below the skin, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, border line glucose, ED and I did not lead a sedentary lifestyle (endurance athlete, national class) but when I hit my late 40's, the house of cards started crashing in on me. I saw "Forks over Knives" movie and tried vegan diet. After just 4 months, angina symptoms disappeared. After 1 year all my issues disappeared. Then I went back to an omnivore diet. Gained a ton of weight, symptoms started returning, freaked me out. Switched back, never going back. Back in good health, lost the weight, now walking and hiking 10+ miles per day, excellent muscle tone. Feel great. Firm believer. It works. Don't live to eat, eat to live.
***** It's hard to maintain. I am back to eating some meats (guilty of making recipes from my youth and culture) but I try to only do it only on special occasions. It would help if you get a high power blender (just watch out for poor quality teflon seals that can break apart and leach into your smoothies). When I was doing smoothies for my main calories, no problem. Once my cheapo blender broke, I eventually strayed. Will try to get a vintage blender and get back on track again.
I have tried it as well. It works. Most people making negative comments here are just to fat and lazy to make the change so they make excuses to discredit Dr. Ornish.
This video is the one that gave me hope that I could improve my cholesterol etc and helped me lose 100 pounds! After being on this change in eating lifestyle the Doctor suggests for a while, I no longer had blood sugar problems or cholesterol problems! It really worked! And it is so simple. It was worth exchanging bad foods for healthy ones! And I did start to feel better even after 1 week! It was a lifesaver for me! 👍
Glad to hear it. I also did it: whole food plant based, lost 50 or so pounds and kept 35 of that off after 3 years. I gained some weight in the past 3 or so months: I think stress related eating. My LDL dropped from 120 to 65; off blood pressure medication and blood pressure is normal.
Cholesterol is very important. There’s only one type of bad cholesterol- app b. These are small dense molecules that have been damaged by oxidation and glycation. Seed oils cause oxidation and excessive glucose causes glycation. How to reduce your apo-b cholesterol? Stop eating carbs.
Plant based is cleansing but in the long run it weakenes and ages the body. Look at Dr. McDougall, Esselstyn, etc. They look frail and sick. You can also improve the heart by a keto or carnivore diet and also keep your strength and vitality.
Problem is most people he’s speaking to are not intelligent or well read. Most need things spoken clearly, slowly and concise so it can be processed. Only look at the predominant hefty population and see they are not well educated. Sadly cheap food is almost always terrible for you so again know your audience.
Dr. Dean Ornish had suffered through Nervous breakdown in his teenage. He was doing nothing that just staying in home. Then he learned som Yoga from his sister n within 15 days he felt so fresh that he gave the exam and became a doctor then after.
He is not obese. He talks fast because he has a 40 minute presentation and about 17 minutes to present it. Read the China Study by Dr. T. Colin Campbell.
Bill Gates Masterjohn or Minger?.. Really? Excuse me, but Dr. Campbell has 35 pages, equaling over 800 references in The China Study. How can all that be bad science. The diet/lifestyle these guys promote is the only one that has been proven to stop & even reverse heart disease. Can you show us any others that can?
Amen! Some people have absolutely no clue about what a challenging race it is for speakers who have very when trying to keep to the allotted time. Bless you. I hope you are well.
I appreciate how Dr. Ornish highlights the importance of making healthy lifestyle changes accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status. I believe increasing access to healthy lifestyle changes for everyone will be the key to improving health in our society. This underlines the role both beneficence and justice have in the health of our society.

Excellent presentation, it is very exciting to see the increasing scientific pool of data growing in this field. Now if we can just get the insurance companies to see that they'll save money!
The people commenting that he's incorrect about eating fat must not have fully watched the video. He says you should eat healthy fats, and not unhealthy fats. Pretty obvious. Healthy e.g. nuts, avocados, omega 3. Unhealthy e.g. saturated fat, red meat, etc.
There is ZERO evidence that Saturated Fats cause Heart Disease ! I even had a Doctor that promotes & eats a Vegan diet admit that there is no proof :) The only bad part about Red Meat is that it causes a higher Insulin Response than white pasta & it's my belief that it's because the cows are fed Corn for almost their entire 18 month life :( They can NOT digest the corn 7 should not eat it,... The Fructose from the corn gets into the muscle & then we eat it :(

Its a very inspiring, informative and motivating and life changing Lecture ( I wish you could have made it in not such a hectic tempo - but it helped so much to take the tempo Down to 75% ) - But thank you for this very important talk - and of course doctors should be payed for lifestyle and diet ( i have heard that traditionel Chinese doctors only are payed as Long as they keep their patients healthy …🙃) ❤️❤️❤️
Jesus wept! What a great video - life changing . Gonna give it a go, maybe I'll end up being able to speak like Dean - Never saw him take more than two breaths, must be great for the lungs as well as the heart !! Tim
In reading the comments while Ornish was talking I enjoyed seeing all the different responses to this talk. I enjoyed his talk immensely and I too have gone to a different type of diet after years of trying to control my weight through normal diet pills and exercise. Recently, I've come to the conclusion that the only way I will ever feel comfortable in my own skin is through more vigorous training and while I agree with those meat eaters out there that say we were meant to eat it I don't believe we were meant to eat the steroid injected, GMO and unnaturally raised animals and vegetables that are available to the average consumer.
For the elongated omega 3 fatty acid ( EPAB & DHA ) that might be needed to be supplemented after age of 50, it is better taken by a contamination free pill right from the algae source rather than fish oil
A century ago, it was said: "At whatever time highly-skilled physicians shall have developed the healing of illnesses by means of foods, and shall make provision for simple foods, and shall prohibit humankind from living as slaves to their lustful appetites, it is certain that the incidence of chronic and diversified illnesses will abate, and the general health of all mankind will be much improved. This is destined to come about." ~ 'Abdu'l-Bahá, Baha'i Faith
There are also people who smoke 2 packs a day and don't get lung cancer. It doesn't mean that smoking isn't a problem. Refuting clinical research studies to anecdotes is not an apples to apples comparison
i just learnt recently that the nicotinic receptors in the brain (the chemical receptors that bind to nicotine) are more numerous in numbers in a smoker Therefore, the craving for nicotine in a smoker is much much more than a nonsmoker. This explains why alot of smokers say that they need to smoke to feel normal. It is because they have developed tolerance for nicotine and constantly needs the same level of nicotine to feel fine. This is true for all other addictions.
Just turned 17 and started having weird symptoms like numbness, little fatigue, palpitations, chest pains, and i think high blood pressure. Had these all started within a week after smoking a dirty street marijuana cartridge my heart started racing like never before and left arm went numb. Its been over a week and started feeling better but still have symptoms. Ive always been a top class athlete and been relatively healthy until i started working. When i started working at 16 i ate pizza almost everyday for about 6 months straight. Now at 17 i think that was the main cause. Ive accepted this mentally and not scared to die but i want to live and experience life. Any recommendations?
Fish oil is not essential. Fish get their omega 3 from plants. It is difficult to be deficient in Omega 3 if eating 1-2 tablespoons of flax seed meal or chia seeds and green leafy vegetables at several meals. There is also research that suggests that those on plant based nutrition become highly efficient in their own manufacture of omega 3. Patients on fish oil are also at increased risk for bleeding, and studies now indicate they are of no benefit for heart disease patients.
Omega-3 doesn't have sufficient evidence in my estimation to care about too much. Walnuts and spinach are what I eat, but the nuts have some proven benefits along with omega-3. My gut tells me omega-3 can be obtained enough from any whole food-plant based diet of sufficient calories. I have still to this day fall into the reductionist opinion of being obsessed about meeting the daily allowance values of every single vitamin. It's not necessary because for example; vitamin E deficiency is extremely rare in the United States, or choline, for example, same. Only an unnatural diet without sufficient plant foods, or an illness, would cause problems, and regular doctors visits can pinpoint the problems. I go with b12 tablet though. I don't want any testing unless I'm sick.

The Ornish Diet was admittedly not followed by most of the participants in Stanford's study. They found it "too vegetarian" and consumed about 3 times as much fat as Ornish recommends. Those who actually did follow it to a tee lost on the order of 50 pounds. The real takeaway from this study is that fat people will probably have an easier time doing low carb than doing low fat plant-based.
Just listen to your body it is the best doctor and advisor of what it needs. Eat what you crave and what makes you feel good. There's no point in eating a salad if you are still starving for some protein and there is no point in eating protein when you feel like eating a salad.
You are right, when we quit smoking and stop vices. However, when discuss the big fat meal, are you including processed foods and carbs with the fats? If so, that is a big confounding factor.
Not very in depth honestly.. like what types of foods is he recommending exactly? I know these answers cause I know a lot about this stuff, but I would have loved to hear examples of commonly available foods that he recommends and fit into his categories. Also organic vs GMO, how much fruit since they contain simple sugars and spike energy levels, etc.
@pdema030 where does he say "only for those with an understanding of god"? he's talking about how one's lifestyle, attitudes and emotions can affect one's health.
That's why the Incas lived off of potatoes and quinoa. Teff is grown in the high plateaus of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Rice grows very well in all of East Asia and where it couldn't be grown, buckwheat can (Japanese north island). Trade can pick up any slack and growing crops is more land efficient than feeding your food to your food.
Honestly, I used to smoke, and I enjoyed it. But I think that I enjoyed it because it got me through the day. Get it? I mean, just because you like it doesn't mean there isn't an underlying reason which causes you to like it. Especially with smoking, which is a fairly nasty, smelly habit (no offense to smokers, but since I quit, I *really* hate the smell... marijuana smells much better!). I'm just saying that, in order to enjoy smoking, you have to overlook many bad things about the habit.
I know I have high tri's. Omega 3 fatty acids is one way for me to get healthier. Now that I have attained my Jenny Craig Weight I am going to increase vegtables, fish in my diet. Buying Omega 3's on line appears to be the cheapest way to get them. I know I should just fish but there is a time factor.
Excess protein in the diet (especially from animal sources) is one of the biggest sources of chronic illness. Americans focus so much on protein and I don't understand why considering even the average vegan eats twice as much protein as they need every day. Excess protein taxes the liver and kidneys, creates an acidic environment in the blood and causes leaching of nutrients from the bloodstream and bones and is the leading cause of osteoporosis.

for a while now i've been pushing the masai diet. the masai are a kenyan tribe that only live on food from cattle, milk, beef, and blood. I can't get blood here in the states, so it's only milk and beef for me. The masai have an important saying, "If a man eats meat and drinks milk on the same day, he is a glutton." Hence each day I have to choose whether it shall be a milk day or a beef day. I myself always choose milk, so essentially i've been living on fluid milk products for the last six years. It has been fantastic for my health, I'm six feet, one inch, the last time I weighed I was 154 pounds, I do superbly on my annual physical. I think it's good for mental health as well because milk tastes so good and it's good to know when you drink it you're doing something healthy for yourself. I'm pushing doctors to test the fluid-milk-products diet to see if it might help with various diseases, including biggies like cancer and AIDS.
***** Interesting article. Basically states that Masai get atherosclerosis just as much as American men but they don't die from it because they live a very active lifestyle rather than being couch potatoes.
THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY "More recently, scientists reported that cannabidiol, one of the chemicals found in marijuana, slows growth of breast cancer cells growing in laboratory dishes. However, this substance has not been tested in humans or even in animals that have cancer yet. Cannabidiol levels in marijuana are low, so any benefit from this compound would require use of a purified and concentrated form."
I wonder about how much seed oils come into play in all of this, because the massai and people of tokelau consume large amounts of saturated fats (from wild game and coconuts respectively) and have no heart disease detectable in their communities...

Please help. Half of my thyroid was crushed. The doc wants to cut half of it out but I was wondering if it could heal... naturally somehow. Crushed side is swollen to large grape size. T4 is high. T3 normal. TSH low 0.01
So just stay away from processed foods, meat, chicken? and what about honey, maple syrup, they are natural, but I'm borderline type 2 diabetes so can't have. I find it difficult to not eat meat...tofu isn't quite the same. lol
honey, maple syrup and sugar are all natural. Yes what's unnatural about them is the amount. Have u tried to hunt for wild honey before, it's rare, dangerous and yield is small. Or u go out to carve and poke holes into maple trees to get maple syrup. it's incredibly difficult and time consuming as well as labor intensive 🤷♂️ same for sugar cane, they are so damn hard that you will break your teeth chewing on them. Without tools, it's nigh impossible to extract any meaningful amount of sugary juice out of the canes.
Thank you. This is helpful. How do i best convince my girlfriend to try this with me? She refuses to and hates me asking. It has caused friction with our relationship.
In my understanding the health is being compromised when both fats and carbohydrates are consumed together on a dayly basis. Acording our metabolic states that uses ketones or glucose for energy it must be understood that body can choose one at a time. So if one eats low fat high carb diet chooses the glucose side and if one chooses high fat low carb diet chooses ketone side. One should not mix these two metabolic states or he will get sick. Am i wrong?
Thomas Valentine Actually, the body doesn't mix them. When you have enough glucose in your blood, it will just store the fat for later. When your glucose levels drop, it first uses its glycogen stores in the liver and the muscles, and then starts breaking down fat stores. It only uses ketosomes in two instances. Either when you are starving for long periods of time, or when you have diabetes type 2 that is untreated.
the truth is in our natural history we never thought about these things, if u eat unprocessed whole natural plant foods or whole meat (which doesnt taste good without spices and salt for a reason, it's more of a survival strategy not thriving strategy) ur hunger tells you what nutrients/food you need people never thought about food combining and it went well just follow ur hunger imo like for example in the morning I usually "crave" Apples prob cause after the Sleep ur dehydrated and wanna Carb your Brain and Cells up, in the Evening I prefer Bananas/Potatoes for more dense Calories with less Water after I've been up long and stayed hydrated throughout the day
Thomas Valentine you mention Fats, I love my Avocado in the Evening to slow the Bloodflow down and get ready to sleep, whereas in the Morning I prefer clean Fuel for my Cells (Glucose)

You are right, when we quit smoking and stop vices. However, when discuss the big fat meal, are you including processed foods and carbs with the fats? If so, that is a big confounding factor.
They do not include processed foods or carbs in that study for the high fat group. They specifically made sure of it.
Not very in depth honestly.. like what types of foods is he recommending exactly? I know these answers cause I know a lot about this stuff, but I would have loved to hear examples of commonly available foods that he recommends and fit into his categories. Also organic vs GMO, how much fruit since they contain simple sugars and spike energy levels, etc.
it's not the fat making you feel sleepy - it's the carbs. The Thanksgiving example is just one day where people eat a TON of carbs...
@pdema030 where does he say "only for those with an understanding of god"? he's talking about how one's lifestyle, attitudes and emotions can affect one's health.
there was a bbc documentary that a high protein moderate carb and low fat meal can make one feel full longest.
Thanks
That's why the Incas lived off of potatoes and quinoa. Teff is grown in the high plateaus of Ethiopia and Eritrea. Rice grows very well in all of East Asia and where it couldn't be grown, buckwheat can (Japanese north island). Trade can pick up any slack and growing crops is more land efficient than feeding your food to your food.
Swami bro just blew my mind.
I-llness
We-llness
Craig Cothren Craig, ground flaxseeds offer awesome O 3's...just saying...2 Tablespoons each day...very inexpensive, too!
Let your medicine be your food and your food be your medicine. Where have I heard this before?
Sounds like a philosopher of old, Greek perhaps
@@vergilmontiero2558 ...and he got his information from imhotep.
@ChaosKids512
That comment was not entirely serious and made over two years ago. I am well and truly "over it."
Ornish rules.
Take a look at a recent picture of Loren Cordain and see if you want to follow a paleo diet
THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY
"More recently, scientists reported that cannabidiol, one of the chemicals found in marijuana, slows growth of breast cancer cells growing in laboratory dishes.
Ornish isn't against eating animals per se.
So you prefer the fish oil to the fish?
Credit must give to his Indian Guru ...Late Swami sivanand ....healing from diet ... especially blockage by Bottel gaurd .is Ancient Indian Ayurvedic principal..but allopathy destroying Ayurveda
Then what about the Keto diet? Is that bad for you?
What Mr. 787 is trying to say is that before Lincoln, the US was following the
Very arguably.
I am surprised he mentions fish oils instead of vegan omega 3 or walnuts.
Ground flax seed much better
Please help. Half of my thyroid was crushed. The doc wants to cut half of it out but I was wondering if it could heal... naturally somehow. Crushed side is swollen to large grape size. T4 is high. T3 normal. TSH low 0.01
what is iodine
What is sea weed + egg = soup
Why not show the foods and recipes to eat ? I’ve heard that nuts are not good for your heart, is it true?
very informative talk but he talks fast
awesome
He just advertised fish oil lol
So just stay away from processed foods, meat, chicken? and what about honey, maple syrup, they are natural, but I'm borderline type 2 diabetes so can't have. I find it difficult to not eat meat...tofu isn't quite the same. lol
honey, maple syrup and sugar are all natural. Yes
what's unnatural about them is the amount.
Have u tried to hunt for wild honey before, it's rare, dangerous and yield is small.
Or u go out to carve and poke holes into maple trees to get maple syrup.
it's incredibly difficult and time consuming as well as labor intensive 🤷♂️
same for sugar cane, they are so damn hard that you will break your teeth chewing on them. Without tools, it's nigh impossible to extract any meaningful amount of sugary juice out of the canes.
So give us some recipes
Apparently the language of mysticism is English ;-)
My friend does Reiki, it does do good for your body.
Thank you. This is helpful. How do i best convince my girlfriend to try this with me? She refuses to and hates me asking. It has caused friction with our relationship.
Hope you have a new girlfriend by now
ha, yeah. For some reason it didn't go through all the way.
He fails miserably to separate processed proteins from more natural ones. In studies with un-processed proteins, his theory falls flat.
What studies are those?
@nexenta
Too little too late
It didn't start with Lincoln, it started with Washington.
Either when you are starving for long periods of time, or when you have diabetes type 2 that is untreated.
the truth is in our natural history we never thought about these things, if u eat unprocessed whole natural plant foods or whole meat (which doesnt taste good without spices and salt for a reason, it's more of a survival strategy not thriving strategy) ur hunger tells you what nutrients/food you need
people never thought about food combining and it went well just follow ur hunger imo
like for example in the morning I usually "crave" Apples prob cause after the Sleep ur dehydrated and wanna Carb your Brain and Cells up, in the Evening I prefer Bananas/Potatoes for more dense Calories with less Water after I've been up long and stayed hydrated throughout the day
Thomas Valentine you mention Fats, I love my Avocado in the Evening to slow the Bloodflow down and get ready to sleep, whereas in the Morning I prefer clean Fuel for my Cells (Glucose)
heart rate or blood pressure?
Yes but some heart disease are not curable ex: Myocardial Bridge which need surgery to unroof the heart arteries so this program does cure MB disease.
