  • Today we are going to look at 2 Leica cameras the Leica TL2 and the Leica X1. Both cameras are fairly old but do they still hold up in 2023? We will take a walk around the beautiful Duke Gardens in Durham NC and put them through their paces to see if they can hold up to todays cameras. Hope you enjoy the video

I just used my tl2 an hour or so ago. It gets daily use and will continue to do so. It’s paired with the 23mm Summicron and for me it’s absolutely perfect. Cameras and lenses in 2023 are so obsessed with how sharp they can make photos that it’s to the point it looks so fake and overdone. I find this TL2, and my old Leica x2, are an absolute perfect mixture of just the right clarity with a sense of realness to them. I have a Fuji xpro 3 and honestly I still reach for the tl2 more often. The xp3 is a fantastic camera in its own right, but it’s missing the soul in the photos that I get out of the Leica.

In comparison between my x2 and the tl2, I found the colors to be a bit more vivid on the x2, a bit stronger overall in all photos whereas the tl2 was a bit more well rounded and not too strong in one area or another, very well balanced. The lens on the x2 has a special magic to it too, the subjects in the photo really just pop out like a 3d effect. The 23mm Summicron has a pop to it too but not as strong in my opinion

i have head about an seen how amazing the images are coming from Leica cameras but thought I would never be able to afford one given the prices I was seeing. I had a friend on Twitter post some shots from the X1 and mentioned you can get them used for under $700. Off to eBay I went and a week later I was a Leica owner. I was so impressed with the X1 I researched the most affordable Leica with interchangeable lenses and found the TL2. I was shocked to find one brand new in the box at B&H Photo for less than half the original cost. There is just something special about the images coming from those sensors that I can't explain but can see. I have and love my Fuji cameras but as you mentioned they just don't have the "it" factor that the Leicas do. Cheers thanks for watching and for the comments.

The TL2 is still relevant and noting smaller on the market today !
I loved mine and I am about to find one because I miss it.

I do love mine! I got a good deal which makes it an even better choice in my mind. The images from it are stellar.

You can talk very good picture with TL2, I have never try the X1. It work very well with 80-200 R Len’s. I most still shoot menu, If Leica improve the function of how TL2 functions with view finder, this is even better than the SL in my opinion. I have small hand and the grip is my comfortable on TL2 than The original SL.
TL 18 and 23 is really good Len’s.

I am impressed with the job both of the cameras did but the TL2 did stand out over the X1 but they are very different cameras. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! Cheers.

Thinking of selling my tl2 to get a sigma fp for doing more video. Somebody stop me 😢

That Sigma fp actually looks interesting. I’m not a “video guy” strictly speaking but it looks interesting for sure.

@@PhotoGearFun I also saw a popular RUclips Justin Philip show how well the elmarit tl 18mm autofocuses on the sigma. The sigma supposedly switches into dc (crop) mode automatically.

@@PhotoGearFunin the end I kept both, and also got the tl35 summilux and I couldn’t be happier

@@PhotoGearFun if working purely with raw photography files, the colour science is nowhere near as good as Leica in my opinion - maybe due to lack of support / presets in lightroom, but on the other hand you can push the colours like crazy to however you want, and it has a very different and clinical look that I like for certain things. For video, it’s like the reverse… the video coming from the sigma in “colour off” mode is very soft and nice 😊 , and the Leica has baked in sharpness and lack of colour information to work with obviously. For photos, I am going to buy dxo photo lab and see if I can emulate Leica colours with it though! So great the l mount is for both… so I haven’t wasted money on lenses either way of doing mainly video where I believe it crops to 80% of the sensor anyway
