Kali's and her husband's relationship actually seems kinda cute. Like.... Kali: "Oh, shit. Sorry I stepped on you, love." Shiva: "All calm now?" Kali: "Now that your here yea. Wait... what was I doing again? Eh.. doesn't matter anymore."
*chuckling* Wait until you hear the version of the story where Shiva mistakenly decapitates Ganesha, Parvati's son whom she made out of clay, and she ends up turning into Kali until Shiva fixes the mess he made...Huh, I guess you just did...
@One’s Nirvonis The kind of psychopath who didn't even know this was his kid in this version and that when the kid was guarding his bathing mom, Shiva thought it was just some insolent brat standing in his way. The story doesn't do much for Shiva's image, but it still shows that even before getting the head of an elephant, Ganesha was a loyal enough son to guard his mother's honor even against the God of Destruction. Not to mention Parvati's transformation into the personification of a mother's rage.
There's also that small myth of Ganesh racing his older brother around the world to determine who loves their parents more. Fun little coincidence: While in Hinduism Asuras are evil divinities and Devas are good, in Zoroastrianism there are evil divinities called Daeva and good divinities called Ahuras (the chief of whom is, of course, Ahura Mazda)
In Hinduism devas aren’t necessarily good and asuras are not necessarily evil. There are many “gods” that did evil deeds and were cursed by mortals for example; Indra. Indra was a very important Vedic god but he was cursed by a mortal sage because of his perversions
The word Devas came from Vedic god Dyaus pitra, a god associated with Indra. The name Dyauṣ Pitṛ is cognate with Greek Zeus Patēr, Illyrian Dei-pátrous, or Latin Jupiter (from an earlier *Djous patēr).

It's useful to know the meaning of these symbolisms Kaali = emptiness in Sanskrit Emptiness is characterised by dark and hence Kali is black . Kaali especially symbolises destruction of Maya (Maya means illusion created by the act of measurement). The severed heads , skull represents Maya. Shiva and Parvati ( kaali's other form) represent two "opposites" . They are part of dualistic philosophy (has elements of non dualism too, especially when looked from yogic perspective) Shiva represents silent observer , non-measurement , void . since this aspect represents the potential , shiva is symbolised by a male (sperm = potential) whereas Parvati represents dynamism of energy, creativity , measurement (Maya) . Since this aspect represents creation, thus Parvati is a female ( womb manifests the potential in a sperm creatively) Almost all religions of the world can be categorised either as dualistic or non dualistic. The western religions are more non dual . The eastern ones have both , rather , in the eastern ones , non-dualism and dualism are both true , but non dualism is more fundamental.

There's a emotional aspect here , when kali killed all the battling asura she was so disappointed on her actions because at the end of the day we all are her children in the form of GOD'S motherly aspect (SHAKTI) , so she had to kill her own children even if they gone bad and were killing their cosmic siblings (deva and nara) but she still killed her own children .... Just think what a mother would feel in that position. So her emotion and anger lead her to come to this decision that if they are killing each other and making her kill her children then they don't deserve this life .... they can't protect and love their own cosmic siblings then why should they torture and kill eachother, even if she stop this battle now but they will kill eachother again.....they don't deserve this life and...... she started rampaging 🙏
I love this high concept of gods/goddesses being distraught and heartbroken when they're forced to kill their own creations who happen to "misbehave" and turn "evil". It presents them in more humane, benevolent, and compassionate light rather than just omnipotent, amoral beings who can do whatever the heck they want, and the "bad guys" who are punished are also recognized as "precious children of God" at the end of day, instead of being demonized/dehumanized and treated as nobodies like most of the stories from the West.

Here's something interesting snippets of information! The name Kali also has roots from the Sanskrit word "kala" meaning time, which explains why Kali is described as ruthless, as time is also ruthless Also, asuras aren't demons in the traditional sense, instead devas and asuras were originally characterized by their lineage, Devas or Adityas being children of Aditi and Daityas or Asuras being children of Diti, it's all very strange, asuras aren't generally characterized as horned or ugly or anything, as a matter of fact many asuras in vedic literature are described as strong and handsome and that stuff, it's their personality that is "demonic"

Why india seems more and more metal as I delve more into it? First bloodywood, and now a four armed blood drinking, headnecklace, handskirt god of carnage? How did I miss these in my life?
Well, India was basically a gigantic mess of competing kingdoms and empires for most of its existence. Meaning there was a lot of war fought, and considering the amount of people the subcontinent can feed those wars were massive. And of course the people living during those times tried to put those wars into context.
She is not only a goddess of carnage but a protective mother goddess... of carnage. I think the idea is she commits bloody carnage on anything that threatens her children.
Wow this is nice to see a Hindu mythology.. thanks a lot It's kinda hard to criticize this but I am happy to see this Kind suggestion is that you pronounce it a bit hard .. can always see the actual pronounce
Pronouncing foreign stuff is always hard. Given all the different cultures' myths she's tackled, she can't very well have perfect pronunciation of everything. I'd let it slide. The primary goal was to share the story.
Yeah, given how many ways I've heard my own name pronounced, I'm willing to give her a pass on this one; if you haven't grown up around people speaking an Indian language, some of the distinctions can be a lot harder to remember. (And that's not even getting into how a large number of the consonants in Marathi (the language of my youth) basically don't exist in English, or that there are rules on when to vocalize or drop the implied-a vowel that I don't really understand, I just picked up through context, and... Anyway, my point is that on this, we can probably give her a pass. (Or specific pointers/corrections, which are generally pretty hard to give comprehensibly in text-only comment form.)
vdate hey it's true maybe considering the hard pronounced words inside Hindu mythology the primary God's names are bit easy... Ohh well trying to speak in the native form is not so bad too ...well one can always try .. but as you say it's on one's interest
To be fair, at least Red is consistent! If we want to go back through all the myth pieces and so on the frequency "Give me a break, I can't pronounce this" comes up it'd almost be strange if everything was nailed here.
My favorite thing about Hinduism is that every figure including all the Gods are at least cursed once, as to present that nobody is without flaws. And even Gods can't escape consequences of their actions. And another notable fact is that in a Hindu household one can be atheist, monotheist , polytheist or more of these, you're still fine. For ex My mom is very religious, dad isn't so much and my elder sister is a hardcore atheist and yet there's no forcing anyone to change . The point is every individual is allowed to have their own form of belief. P.S: I'm not saying no other religion does or anything. I just stated my personal experience from growing up in a Hindu household. Also I belong to the sect which produced Scholars and priests in Vedic times(Brahman Varna). In fact my great grandfather was a priest. So my family has a fairly religious background. And I've personally read various holy books from different religions for pleasure
It always surprises me how even in otherwise liberal Brahmin households there is just this casual sense of Brahmin exceptionalism, and lack of historical self-reflection. To the rest of us this looks ridiculous - partly because of the damage Brahminical constructs have dealt to our society over the centuries, and also because it's absurd to invoke lineage from Vedic times at the drop of a hat. Get over yourselves. The Brahminical insistence on monopoly over knowledge was shameful, and it was never absolute. And to any other kids reading this who are uncritically accepting their caste identities - *don't*. It's terribly uncool. Caste does not define you. It's stupid. Choose other things to be proud of - like your language, or your city, or your district.

@@clockworkkirlia7475 the strong response is because of how casteism works in India, and despite all the efforts of the govt and all the education even after so many years of independence we still see instances of casteism still prevalent, one example would be how op name dropped their lineage- casually highlighting their elite religious background. Casteism however can be much much worse, in the past it was used to specifically discriminate against certain communities based on the caste they were born into, preventing even their assimilation into society. They were considered as basically lesser humans, if humans at all. It's a sensitive topic, because it has a very painful history and has not yet been eradicated even from urban places, such instances of casual casteism or elitism because of caste still exists. It gets really fun when you get into the Atheist schools of Hindu philosophy that are still considered 100% Orthodox interpretations of the Vedas and Upanishads (though thanks to Atman-Brahman as a concept, the one I'm most familiar with, Advaita Vedanta, is really more like Atheism and Pantheism and Nihilism rolled into a single thought without contradicting itself).

In myths , Mayasura , the greatest architect of the Asura clan , built the the there cities of Maya called Tripura .They were floating cities one above the other , the lowest city was made of iron and was located on the earth , the middle one located in the skies was made of silver and the third one made of gold was located in space.

Well u see maa kali is destroyer of evil but for her devotees she's like a mother, there's no need to be afraid of her
She is the destroyer of evil, she absorbs darkness , she is the mother of all living beings. Kali is generally the angry form of goddess Durga....The supreme mother goddess of hinduism. Kali only comes to presence when negativity has taken over positivity. She is also a fierce warrior. She gives you strength and prosperity. She is nude, ugly, fierce, but she is still our mother. She represents the anger in evey woman.... When u disrespect or assault or harm a woman.... Kali arises in her. Fun little coincidence: While in Hinduism Asuras are evil divinities and Devas are good, in Zoroastrianism there are evil divinities called Daeva and good divinities called Ahuras (the chief of whom is, of course, Ahura Mazda)
Not all asuras are the badguy .
In Hinduism devas aren’t necessarily good and asuras are not necessarily evil. There are many “gods” that did evil deeds and were cursed by mortals for example; Indra. Indra was a very important Vedic god but he was cursed by a mortal sage because of his perversions
More than a coincidence.
The word Devas came from Vedic god Dyaus pitra, a god associated with Indra. The name Dyauṣ Pitṛ is cognate with Greek Zeus Patēr, Illyrian Dei-pátrous, or Latin Jupiter (from an earlier *Djous patēr).

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't she the goddess of time and death.
@@farukhsheikh5790 She is. Kaal literally means time and death in sanskrit, and Goddess Kaali(Kaali is the feminized form of Kaal), also referred to as Mahakaali (Maha means great) is the wife of Lord Shiva, also known as Mahakaal.
It's useful to know the meaning of these symbolisms
Kaali = emptiness in Sanskrit
Emptiness is characterised by dark and hence Kali is black .
Kaali especially symbolises destruction of Maya (Maya means illusion created by the act of measurement). The severed heads , skull represents Maya.
Shiva and Parvati ( kaali's other form) represent two "opposites" . They are part of dualistic philosophy (has elements of non dualism too, especially when looked from yogic perspective)
Shiva represents silent observer , non-measurement , void . since this aspect represents the potential , shiva is symbolised by a male (sperm = potential)
whereas Parvati represents dynamism of energy, creativity , measurement (Maya) . Since this aspect represents creation, thus Parvati is a female ( womb manifests the potential in a sperm creatively)
Almost all religions of the world can be categorised either as dualistic or non dualistic.
The western religions are more non dual . The eastern ones have both , rather , in the eastern ones , non-dualism and dualism are both true , but non dualism is more fundamental.
You should make a video on Hanumana too
He ripped up a whole mountain and carried it to other side of india just to bring a medicinal plant for lakshmana
@Deserve Not Desire According to myths , Hanuman is immortal , he will live as long as the name of Lord Rama lives on the earth and he is an avatar of Shiva.
I just figured that she’s having a hard time figuring out a design for Hanumana that isn’t completely identical to Son Wukong.
Technically speaking he is the child of Shiva and parvathy but they were in monkey form when she got pregnant so out of shame she transfered her pregnancy to vayu the lord of the wind and then he transferred the pregnancy to a mortal woman. So he is the son of Shiva, Parvathy, Vayu and the mortal woman whose name I cannot remember. Here's something interesting snippets of information! The name Kali also has roots from the Sanskrit word "kala" meaning time, which explains why Kali is described as ruthless, as time is also ruthless
Also, asuras aren't demons in the traditional sense, instead devas and asuras were originally characterized by their lineage, Devas or Adityas being children of Aditi and Daityas or Asuras being children of Diti, it's all very strange, asuras aren't generally characterized as horned or ugly or anything, as a matter of fact many asuras in vedic literature are described as strong and handsome and that stuff, it's their personality that is "demonic"
Influence of very "good vs bad" religions, like Christianity, taking away the more gray aspects.
I think in Kali's aspect 'Kala' means death and often used in place of death..
@@zidaryn hah! You think a fledgling religion could influence this one?
No, it was all due to the syncretisation of Asura and Rakshasa. Which is kind of like the difference between Sith and Dark Side users.
@@achintyanaithani889 The diffrence between sith and darkside users? Unless you are talking books/games (which I haven't gotten around to yet) the only diffrence between them that I know is that some "Jedi" struggle with the dark side and use it for a time or fall. While Sith embrace it.
So Kali is entropy, then. This checks out.
During Britain's control over India, the British were so horrified by Kali that they used her to prove that the Indians were 'savage' and needed 'taming' and 'control'- so in response, the Indian rebels used the raging, ass-kicking Kali as their unofficial mascot.
Which is pretty ironic sense Christianity was the main religion of the west at the time and some variations of Christianity there is thing called armegedon where anyone who isn't a "true Christian " gets brutally murdered. And to be honest I rather worship a firey ball of rage than a god that pretends to love you just to kill you later on for not meeting some weirdly specific requirements (did you know that wearing mixed fabrics is a sin?)
Wearing mixed fabrics and eating shellfish are on the same sin level as being gay. Also, if a woman is raped before she's married, she's gotta be killed.

There is a male counterpart, Rudra. Such is his visage that his very name is terror. It doesn't mean terror, it is terror. Rudra is Terror personified. His chilled out version is shiva who lives on mount kailash and smokes weed. Not exaggerating even slightly.
@@excitableboy7031
Yeah, Rudra is one of the various deities who gave form to the modern interptetation of Shiv...
Rudra was indeed the god of destruction, but the negative version, they offered him the remenants of previous offerings, since he was disliked.
In modern India he is not even worshipped that much...
There are some temples....but he is not a mainstream god like Vishnu or Kālī.
I remember my professor in Archaeology summing up the Kali pretty neatly with the following description:
"Kali was created with the purpose of killing a specific demon.
She did that and then just continued doing what she was good at.
It was kind of her purpose in life..."
That's not totally right... 😩
And your professor was totally wrong. He would get fail if he will attempt exam of Hinduism.
First of all, Kali was not created. She is always present in everyone, specially in feminine forms. She is universal.
And she has many appearance incidents, not only that single time when she came forward to kill particular demon.
So, I guess your professor had listened or read only particular incidents, and he described it half baked way.
the image of Kali has always terrified me since i was a kid, so this was just heckin adorable

Máté Kovács lol, I swear the sample for death grip’s punk weight sounds like your average Indian wedding music. Still My favourite track from DG.
Well, India was basically a gigantic mess of competing kingdoms and empires for most of its existence. Meaning there was a lot of war fought, and considering the amount of people the subcontinent can feed those wars were massive. And of course the people living during those times tried to put those wars into context.
You want metal? Google the astra weapons.

Wow this is nice to see a Hindu mythology.. thanks a lot
It's kinda hard to criticize this but I am happy to see this
Kind suggestion is that you pronounce it a bit hard .. can always see the actual pronounce
I agree the pronunciation can be a lot better.
"none of your blood will reach the ground" is the hardest shit I've ever heard.
@@TathD As a complete outsider, the above comment seemed completely reasonable and kind, even if it's a little strange to bring up one's direct lineage in such a way. Obviously I'm ignorant and my apologies if this is annoying, but why the strong response? I can work some of it out from context but I felt it was better to ask.
is it really a hindu household if only 25-50% of members are hinduist? I'm pretty sure your secret is not being assholes as your sister I assume isn't preaching christianity to everyone else either.
In rural areas, it is still much much worse, even though we live in 21st century.

From the explanation here, Brahman sounds like a plant with thousands of roots or something of that nature.
