Worked a seriously long time to get this one out to all of you, I really hope you enjoy it, the quality of it has utterly blown me away so far and I'm happy to say I've begun already on the second quarter too.

laughed at how it had over 200 wins and it was only 7 eps that you showed making anime is super hard a lot of studio feel they can cut back and add still frames and be okay but then in the blue-raay they fix any mistakes btu with this they make sure it all is great on the first try

39:38 A little detail i love: The demons only started attacking again after Himmel died. He was such a beast, that even as an old man, just because he was alive, some of the strongest demons didnt dare come out of their hidey holes. And we see that 28 years after the hero Himmels passing, Aura "regained" her power 28 years ago.
There's evidence he was active hunting ones that popped their heads up even after he became a shriveled old man. Remember how he checked up on Qual each year.

Himmel was actively hunting demons even as an old man. so it wasn't that he was still alive, but because he was still an active threat up until his death.

if you look at the way this scene is edited, Frieren is shown in the same position as Himmel, sort of implying that she's carrying on his legacy as a hero. Notice how, in the present, Fern is to Frieren's right and Stark is to her left, likewise Heiter is to Himmel's right and Eisen is to his left. Each of them carries with them a mark, and memories, left behind by those who inspired them: Heiter with Fern, Eisen with Stark, and Himmel with Frieren. By framing this shot the way they did, they are showing how the memories and legacy of the past is being carried into the future, ensuring it'll live on and continue to matter.
If i am not wrong 3 years and a half years invested into this anime(not all in active production but overall time is still 3 .5 years ) ,so ofc the animators had time to show their talent .
It definitely shows big time.
I'm willing to wait another 3 and a half years for the 2nd season if it's kept consistent.

This show is the epitome of all my favorite things, done extremely well
High fantasy, magic, powerful characters that are still able to lose
-But it's not really high fantasy I think.-
-The high fantasy already happened during-
-Himmels time.-
-Frierens new journey is more like low-
-fantasy, the world doesn't depend on it.-
-They're just roaming around helping-
-people and clearing the few (sidequests)-
-things that are left to do.-

Everything I'm seeing is saying high fantasy is essentially fantasy taking place in an alternate, not earth world, why low fantasy is something more like Harry Potter where it has all the magic, fantasy creatures, etc but taking place on earth as we know it
@@zaehelhm3099 Yeah you are right. I don't really know how I got to this conclusion but I am wrong. Although what I described is something that can be a common difference between those two genres, that's probably why I messed this up.
The fact that you hit the 100 win mark as quickly as episode 3 really shows that Frieren is something special. A series of such insane and consistent quality that, fittingly enough, I think is gonna find a place amongst the all time greats like FMA, Cowboy Bebop, Code Geass.
41:14 personally one detail I LOVe in this scene is how the demon looks around the room to find clues to help him resolve the situation with lies. It's done very subtly but it sells the moment so well, not only does it make you understand that it's not just random words thrown out but it's calculated but it also helps understanding why people would fall for it, how they tailor their words in a way that'll specifically work for the person in front of them.

Absolute masterpiece, Its the peak of storytelling, the animators nailed it and we need a thousand years of this anime teaching us about the life.. or remembering us of the meaning. Trully special on my own list. I even dont care of demon slayer win because after all we know the complexity of themes that this show touch. For adults that raise up watching animes this is blown minding. I'm a frieren evangelist, the lessons about move on and trying to understand the frustation and keep going its really important to us, young adults that almost give up everyday by the horrors we witness and the lonely feeling about all by superfluous.
I haven't seen such an overall impressive anime in a very, very long time, it's blown me away in so many different ways and it's seemingly only getting better, (I'm now starting episode 10).

Right, they keep alternating. Elf taught a human who taught an elf who taught a human. Like so many things in this anime and the manga, they don't repeat exactly, but each generation typically "rhymes" with the past.

This really is a 10/10 anime series. I pray that Madhouse produce a second season, I'll happily wait.
Episode 28 looks like it will go through manga chapter 60. Manga chapter 119 would be another excellent season stopping point, so I think a second season may come pretty soon. There are currently only 127 chapters tho, it is likely to take about 2 years for there to be enough content for a third season.
How this series does demons is really just the best.
Most people tell you they are pure evil; some make them humans with slight differences and other go the animal route... Fri goes all 3 somehow. It is truly the most dangerous version of demon.
Imagine a portal opens up in our world and this version of demon enters?
Worse than Zombies for sure.

I watched up to about episode 20 before I convinced my wife to also watch this. By that point there is a lot of comedy, so I would be laughing all the time. When my wife decided to join and started watching the anime, she said she got even more confused about why I laughed so much since it was such a sad anime. Though I guess sad is not really a good work here, Frieren doesn't really do "sad" per se, I'd say the emotion it nails perfectly is bittersweet.
The best term for Frieren is bittersweet in my opinion

Heiter saying his drinking was catching up to him healthwise was pretty ironic, as Heiter actually lived a crazy long time for a human.
If we assume he was in is 20’s when the Hero Party started their adventure, add the 10 years of their adventure, then the 50 years to Himmel’s passing, then the 20 more years Frieren wandered about before visiting him again, then the 5 years Frieren spent training Fern and translating the text, then that means Heiter lived over 105 years.
I'm so excited you're doing Frieren! This is very much one of my favorite animes of all time now. So many wonderful things about the show and it ended just as it began. Can't wait to see your take on it :D Not only is the Japanese sub good, but they did amazing with the English dub too.
The best thing is that the first quarter is the quieter portion of the season, it gets even better as it goes on.
But one clarification, Frieren's master Flamme wasn't an elf, she was human, so her life was equally as fleeting as Himmel's. Still though, Frieren wears her earrings, perhaps a sign of tutelage or respect for her.
Himmel means sky. It's raining like that because Himmel is crying for Heiter.
One thing I love about this show is how the heroes are remembered. In some towns they were never forgotten, festivities, well cared for statues, even the young who weren't alive during the golden years of Himmel the Hero know their names. Yet in others only the old remember, statues left overgrown, even Frieren isn't hailed as some great hero just an abnormal mage. Just goes to show what the passing of time does for different people and how much of an impact one small group of adventurers can have. When we meet the Elven monk/hermit in a few parts there is enough evidence to infer that he was one of the PREVIOUS generation of heroes who absolutely no-one remembers except for maybe an odd statue in a dilapidated location. The anime just keeps throwing the concept of time passing in your face in so many ways.
Is it understandable that oddly I got so happy and teary for it gaining so much wins in well 2,5h of content alone? I can´t describe, why even the praise and every reaction every time gets me emotional. I´ve never been that emotinal in my life - true art stirrs deep, doesn´t it?!

it all happened so fast from them adventuring, seeing the meteorite shower to Himmel's funeral, then he was being buried

I ugly cried the first time I saw Frieren start crying at Himmel's funeral. After the first time, I still feel like I'm on the verge of tears everytime I see it. "Why didn't I try to get to know him better?" just hits so hard.
This is making me so happy i feel like you will love this series
Something I noticed while watching was when Frieren was listing some folk magic she knows one is a spell to make grapes taste sour which Is the dwarf's favorite food
I think the biggest win after watching the entire first seasons is that no detail is lost in this show. Everything has meaning and reason.

I never thought much about how much the small animations to the montage really ads to them. And also makes the one montage where they don't do that stand out extra clear in my mind.
Amazing video and I'm going to watch part 2 right now.
I would add 2 more wins for Qual's fight:
1) Showing that, despite Qual being a relic of the past, he was still a prodigy and a threat. Yes, his spell was outclassed but in seconds he realized a flaw in Fern's defensive spell and how to exploit it
1) Frieren's final blow on Qual was basically a stealth attack. Frieren mentions that flight magic is a very recent discovery. As far as Qual knew, Frieren had no way to fly, so she exploted that for a surprise attack from above.
I love these sososo much, and I knew you would love Frieren! I do too, and still in a bit of disbelief that you are doing this anime in the first place (even though it’s so good and you would at some point)

By the way, if you're going to ship Stark and Fern, go with "Stern". In English it covers Fern's personality (at times), and it's German for "star".
One more by the way, Stark's VA is Mash Burndead from Mashle and Gabimaru from that one that isn't Slime and has a Gabimaru in it but I can't remember the name but it's really good too.

A little bit of production lore: first 4 episodes were dropped together almost as if it was a full movie, that is why the quality is even higher there.

To me up there with the best recurring gags in this series is Frieren getting eaten by every mimic in sight
This is gonna be so good. This show is one of the best this year. Sadness and joy, characters and action, and a low stakes look at a very lived in fantasy world.

Just seeing the cuts from the moments of frieren and the hero party make me teary eye, the humanity in the way the face aging and death and friendship is just too great.
I almost skipped this anime because I thought it was one of those game adaptations, but I'm so glad I saw some clips of it on youtube. I got to watch the first few episodes as a binge and honestly they destroyed me emotionally (in the best way possible). Definitely one of the best anime I've seen in recent years
after this video I relize that the small details in Frieren is freaking crazy. Respect to MadHouse for all of this effort

17:56 For me the detail of Frieren's reflection being shown and animated as she exit the room here is worthy of a win. The level of care they give to such small details is crazy and make the whole anime's world looks so much more alive.

I love this Anime so much. It's taken the spot for my 2nd favorite Anime of all time.
I went into this anime not expecting much, and my god did it absolutely knock it out of the park.
I'd recommend you looking up the meaning of the names, since all characters names are german.
Some of the characters you've encountered:
Frieren - freezing
Himmel - Sky (or heaven)
Heiter - cheerful/bright/happy
Eisen - Iron
Fern - far/far away
Stark - strong
and some demons:
Qual - Torment
Lügner - Liar
Linie - Line
Draht - Wire
There's also some spells with a bit german but it's much less obious (except "Auslese")
I get choked up again just watching the clips! Holy cats was this a good anime. Everything has meaning and connections (keep your eyes on the flowers). I will definitely buy the 4K Blu-ray when it comes out.
24:09 Flamme is not an Elf though and this is important information . Flamme laid the foundation for development of human magic . Before that , magic was sth forbidden . Also she was the bridge between Serie and Frieren

You know, I just realized that Heiter died like, 80+ years after the start of the adventure. Given that at minimum, he’d have to be late teens when the adventure started, that means he was about 100 years old when he died. Pretty good for a man who was an alcoholic most of his life.
The payoff in the last episode of hearing why Frieren didn't cry until after himmel passed is so beautifully done. Because it'd be awkward once they meet again. Cherishing memories and creating friendship as you learn about those you adventure with. Regret, at not spending enough time with those you care deeply for. An era of peace that you wish you could spend with those that made such a time possible. Is this show perfect? Probably not, but it is to me.
You missed the whole "so small" joke in episode 6.
