- In this years fleet of test bikes the Salsa Blackthorn is definitely on the larger side of the spectrum. With 140mm of real wheel travel and 160mm up front, how does this trail bike trail bike stack up against its competitors?

“I like food that makes me feel big ... I eat all my dinners with a pickle fork” what a random way to open the video lol
Day 47 of testing fields and Levy has lost his mind.
@@pinkbike Can't wait to see which field is the most good
@@pinkbike LOL
Meth is pretty gnar bro
The word you're looking for is beautiful
I love companies that pay attention to small details. The spare tube rubber guard, and the linkage flap preventing rocks from being jammed in there... they’re honestly just fantastic!
I had to make for my Ripmo af😏
@@goride365 I've yet to make one for my Demo, before the carbon cracks from a rock...
I think The spare tube strapped to the bike is stupid and only for racing. Leave it there too long and it degrades from the exposure.
That linkage flap might wear down the frame
@@domenjeram9180 As long as the linkage flap is made from a softer material than the frame, there is no way it's physically impossible to wear down the frame (unless you get dust and rocks jammed in between)
I’ve never considered salsa until this moment. That is one rowdy looking trail bike!
Idk why I’m watching this when I’m not even close to being able to afford the bike lmao
Same reason I watch car reviews of super cars... it’s nice to dream!
Would buy an EMTB for that money
In 5 years maybe this kind of bike will be in your price range, who knows. But its good to know whats the best out there currently regardless of what you might buy
same but like knowing the recent tech
Maybe cause the base aluminum model is much cheaper than the full bling model tested here?
That nose manual at 12:30 was pretty choice!
These videos are amazing @1.5x speed.
Also: with chainstay lengths becoming much more diverse lately, we need a video on detailed ride impressions, tests, measurements, etc. Comparing short vs medium vs long stays.
What do they do to: body position, cornering, balance, braking, pedaling, jumping, jibbing, high/low speed manoeuvrability, riding style, race speed, big jumps, frame stiffness, everything
13:11 I have NEVER heard someone pronounce decals like that
I had to go back to listen again to see if I heard him correctly lol.
Decels
you're obviously not Canadian
@@misterhulk True but I did grow up near a Tim Horton's so, ya know, same thing.
That's how every English-speaking country besides the US pronounces it 🙃
Pinkbike You kings love your videos you give me a lot of motivation to ride the bikes thank you!!!
Anybody else who wants to see a downhill bike field test?
I love how the salsa looks.
Gorgeous bike! Feel like Salsa bikes never quite intrigued me before, but this looks fire
I never considered salsa, but this pink/purple color is absolutely wild. Genuinely makes me want to get one...
Thank you PB you guys are the best. I have being asking for this for a while.
Ha ha “Barney.” Barney looks like a fun shredder! Sick Salsa
Love the purple and large Salsa on the bottom of the downtube. They generally make some good looking bikes.
Great review- I love my Salsa bikes- but the downhills I ride in Wisconsin are pretty tame..nice to know they have this out there in case I change where i ride.
Love pink bike u guys are my inspiration
I have a’19 Rustler NX and I love it. I was waiting for them to review Salsa. I feel like the brand is overlooked but they have great bikes aside from bike packing stuff. They seem to take risks and make stuff that’s just a little different from the rest.
Sick bikes! I don’t think ever seen one of these in person
y'all are so lucky to live near these great trails who else wants to leave near squamish
Yeah I wish my area had more advanced trails that weren't lift assisted.
I calling it the blurred bike is the forbidden enduro bike
Nah its definitely a Nomad, Forbidden's new bike will be a 29/mixed
I've been thinking this about the extended SRAM cassette since they launched it. Solid points on just going with a smaller chainring.
I love my 10 -52 gx! Smooth and got the grannie gear when i need it
That bike is sweet and the color too
I demo'd this recently. It's a nice bike, but I really love my Ripmo.
It’d be great to have a rating chart at the end; kinda like a spec chart, that shows where you’d rate a category such as Climbing Capability.
Will we ever see an in depth review of the Orbea Rallon? Bike looks sick during the Pinkbike Academy
Why don't companies just put a 57-degree head angle on bikes instead of making it 0.5-degree slacker every time
Because it would make their previous bike obsolete right away. Even if they know exactly how to make the perfect bike they will do it in 4 steps adding one or two each years. Just like cars, cellphone compagnies and... well almost every producers to be fair.
Because if they did that, they‘d realise that it wouldn‘t feel good. I‘m sure it would be great on the steepest of trails, but it would feel sluggish and nit very maneuverable on everything more mellow or tighter climbs. It really is a balancing-act. Right now people tend to focus some more on downhill-performance for things like trailbikes, but with that performance in other areas will suffer a bit
Also a 0.5 degree change, you will feel it. Just not extremely dramatic
Boy does pinkbike have a video for you
Pinkbike have done it ruclips.net/video/LVb0u2Z9U2A/видео.html
I love the purple
The all new Salsa Ripmo Barney Edition!
it's the right kind of purple. I like it
You could review a bike that’s broken in half and it would still be Interesting. You da man!
I watched this video because of the purple! What an awesome color. Funny that you count this as a con. :)
Cant wait to see how you like the new nomad
This seems like a good bike to go down a size on. Most size medium trail bikes in this category seem to have a 450mm reach, up to 465mm for the more aggressive trail bikes. The size small Blackthorn is 448mm.
Funny you say that. I’m moving from an S3 Stumpy to a small Blackthron
That is a lovely purple, but how does it compare to an Evil Offering?
11:18 Well dropper posts work pretty well for a few years now, except for Reverbs and Command Posts that is.
I love purple
Can you talk about best trail bikes for kids? Thank you!
That purple frame is the shit. Instant classic!
Given that Salsa usually doesn't offer an alloy frame only for their bikes, (and definitely not with a threaded BB!) I like everything about this, except the superboost. While I think the 157 is objectively better than the 148, I want my full squish to share wheelsets with my hardtail, (a Karate Monkey in my case.) In that regard, the RipMo AF and Evil Offering are about the only options I have left. This is a great looking bike, though. I've ridden 5 split pivot bikes, (2 of which were long term tests,) and I'm definitely a fan of the linkage.
Great review chief..;-)
Beautiful bike.
Adjustable geometry is the business. I have an old marin quad Tara, 4,5,6 inch, a revelation 85 130 at front. It's a bike for all things. Tight xc and reasonable downhill bike.
Manufacturers need to add adjustability into the designs.
Triple cranks for heavens sake.
Why this quest for more gears, when we had 27?!
A triple crank is not much more weight than the single ring setups.
How long until the super boost/ super short chain stays are rubbed clean by your shoes?
Lookin for a new bike at 3:32 AM
Love how Levy puts the emphasis on "post" in dropper post. He says "dropper POS", not "DROPPER post"
It would have been nice to compare this to the Devinci troy
Just go up front chain ring while pairing it with 52t Eagle dinner plate
Nice! Does anyone know what knee pads Mike is wearing in this video? Thank you! 😀
buetiful bike might get one in a different color
purple Cannondale Habit :) cool!
bit confused - this uses DW Split Pivot - same as Devinci, and in vid's I've seen they ride SO different. Does it really come down to the tune?
If you could get the fork and shock decals in green it woul md be even more Barney or hulk then ever before
I love the little details. It is a nicely built frame, but I don't I don't get why they'd for those short stays... on ALL sizes
quite unbalanced. Longer base really doesn't impact how the front turns 🤷♂️ but it'll give stability at speed and keep the bike planted at steep uphills. Need more livelyness dispite length? Mullet it
why is "split pivot by D.W." a deal? in effect it is just a form of linkage driven single pivot. It rotates around the lower pivot point in a circular fashion and not around some axle.
Ill go for siskiu t8.
I want this bike because its purple
its by far an all-mountain bike with that travel and geo
Why does the frame look so familiar?
Salsa, sounds a lot like my not so current Slash but I prefer the British Racing Green colour of my bike compared to the Purple of the Salsa. It is a bit to Regal for my tastes.
Funny how Enduro / AM of yesteryear is the new Trail.
its my dream
The question is how or where to get one!?!?
Do the yt capra shred
Love the field test videos! Did the large feel too big? I'm between M and L on their size charts and I've been leaning towards sizing down since the bike is so big. Now I'm wondering though if I should just go with the large and put a shorter stem on it
I was also surprised with Levy’s choice to go Large. I sit a small hair under 5’10” and I definitely would have gone with the Medium
whats that song at 7:28 ?
I've never understood why you would want a lockout on the fork.. wouldnt you want it to dip so you have a steeper more stable head angle?
A lockout doesn’t extend the fork all the way back up. It simply increases compression damping, so it moves less. It’ll still stay around your fork’s sag point, so the head angle stays mostly constant. When you’re out the saddle pushing hard with your body weight, the fork compressing and decompressing with every pedal stroke leads to a lot of wasted energy. This wasted energy will impact your climbing negatively, a lot more than simply riding with a fork that doesn’t dip and so is slacker head angle by just 0.3 degrees.
could you potentially buy the rocker link and shock and turn this into the enduro bike???
Yes, just look up the Cassidy.
So is the salsa down duro 🤔😁
I like that purple color. Don't see that as a con.
Can you do the specialized stump jumper video tomorrow please
fork deckals?
You are a pickle fork..,
Great video as usual!
Just bought a new bike an in very happy with it. Just here for levy’s rampage comments
This is the first time levy has appeared talented on corners.
same design and same feature on my 2020 Cannondale Habit
Great bike apart from another axle width and you void your warranty if your put a coil shock on it.
Wow😮😮😮👍👍👍👍
Say live valve suspension one more time
Anything over 150mm front, or 140mm rear, is “all mountain” territory. “Trail” is 130-150F 110-140R. Don’t @ me.
Don't know who needs to hear this: you don't need an expensive bike to have fun on the trails.
Cheap one's won't last very long.
@@richarddecredico6098 a $450 entry level mountain bike should last plenty.
I love how all of these make my $4k Niner look cheap.
I think the purple is great. Too many makers just run black or blue or red. It's super disappointing all of salsa's lower spec models are boring colors. Its making me look to other makes for an affordable FS. Give me bright greens, yellows, purples, pinks etc.
Wait, so clamping on the dropper is fine?
As long as it is extended, you should be fine
Probably not if the clamp itself isn't rubberized (or maybe the rubber has worn off).
Mystery bike is definitely the new Cannodale
Why it is a habit?
Seems like I need to turn the video speed up 10%.
subtitles will be ?! hello!!!?????
... why bother with a flip chip? They seem to offer such minor changes, not worth the bother.
👍🏻
Beautiful bike but I would have to pimp my wife to buy it!
Or yourself! Don't sell yourself short dude
i give 4 camels
@@xeicv lol
Got any pics? How much?
Does anyone anywhere ever use their ”adjustable geometry flip chips”. Just more parts to break.
It's not really the kind of part that will break. I'm most likely going to be the one weirdo out there next year running my Specialized Status in the steep position.
its perfect for my riding but a little on the over priced side lmao, especially with an alloy rear
Would look way better with a fox transfer and I feel like at the price that’s what you should get
more purple bikes 2021
The uneven stickers on that fork bother me lmao
Do these salsa frames snap like the rest of them did?
Ouch!
10:00 "timing climb" no Levy its "climbing time"
I don't see how this bike is any different than all the other bikes that use the same suspension design.
It's probably a matter of combining that suspension design with this particular geometry. And what that does depends entirely on the rider, how they ride, and where they ride.
It looks great until I looked at the price. They want Santa Cruz CC money. Why would I get this over a Hightower?!
I didn’t see much hat a Hightower has over this... but I did see a lot of cool little attention to detail thingys this salsa has over the high tower..
@@redpilledpatriot8484 Like?
@@bill8791 watch the video again bro.. that will do you what you are looking for.
@@redpilledpatriot8484 I did, hence my comment. Name something on that bike that is over and above an SC CC bike of the same price. You can't because it doesn't. Even has an aluminium rear triangle which is not a good advertisment for the quality of their carbon either.
@@bill8791 ok, it’s got a rear travel pivot which is actually a really big deal. As far as I’m aware The Brandy mention does not have any such thing. Not to mention other devices built into the frames such as plastic prevention devices that are there to prevent damage to the frame itself which also Santa Cruz does not have as far as I’m aware of .
lol mike levy still saying "dropper post" in his funny ass way, accentuating the wrong part of it
blackthorn looks pretty good but the yellow cassidy looks so much better ngl
Please review Polygon Siskiu T8

I’m easily pleased.
I saw “rampage trail bike” and I checked my funds.....nope.
