Road Rash 2 is the best to me, for the feel of attacks (they have more impact), for the simplicity, for the music, and for the tracks. Playing it on a Mega SG with the scan lines dialed-in on a 4k Samsung TV is perfection!

Clearly their tendencies were starting to show though.
Back before they were pulling egregious microtransactions, loot boxes ect they were doing stuff like this by squandering an opportunity by making a not even half-assed port. It starts with laziness and ends with pure greed.

From Commodore 64 games like Mail Order Monsters to Genesis 1991 killer titles, I always saw the “ECA” logo at the start of the game as the sign of the best quality around. Little did I know then but when ECA became EA is was just the beginning of a long road of diminishing quality.

I didn't realize until years after the end of the Genesis/mega drive days just how important sports games were to the console's success, they were crazy important.
The SNES was notoriously crap when it came to sports games (not all of them just the majority) SEGA had a default Monopoly that would hold until the PlayStation era.

Adding proper scaling and rotation from the Sega CD would have meant completely changing the core engine. Would have taken some work not to lose that good road rash feel, and there was no way to make it like the 3DO.. So they took the easy route. Is kinda how I see it

@@Lightblue2222 I agree. I also think the game could have had a cartoon look like the batman games that use the scaling and rotation chip during the road driving parts. It might have been amazing and also kept that road rage feel. It was the easy play it safe approach EA did..

Thats the sega cd for you if they weren't going for Fmv then they didn't care. So many great arcade classics cpuld have made a home on the sega cd especially shootem ups but they took what they had and ..... well they missed a lot of great opportunities.
I love sega, but once i saved my pennys to afford the sega cd, i was happy at first but definitely regreted it when i got the 32 x two Christmas's later.
Honestly made me jump ship and run to sony for i felt scamed.
Sold my sega cd my 32x and super Nintendo for the playstation.
Very regrettable for i sold snatcher as well. Wtf was i thinking. But at the time got street fighter alpha, Wing commander 3 and tekkan 2.
Those 3 games were better then 90% of the 32x library even with the sega cd pushing it to it's limite.
Shortly after ps1 came out wirh there own road rash.
It wasn't bad. But i still perfer 1 and 2 of the series over any other.

*kearsCH*hello-hello, earth to space cadet. come in space cadet!*kearsCH* . . . *kearsCH*what’s that? you broke your big-rimmed, 1,000 millimeter thick glasses and are stuck up in the void?*kearsCH* . . . *kearsCH*what!!? I don’t care if that is equal to one meter! what an anane, stupid, stupid thing to say when we are trying to deal with such wonders! how about I come up there and break them myself you boring schmuck! or better yet, I will leave you up there without sight in the void, those of us back down to earth will appreciate the stars without the sentimental flagellations about anecdotes from your childhood you constantly fill us with, you half-witted nostalgia harlot!!*kearsCH*!!!!!!!
And thus it is in this fashion that we leave you behind to save our minds from the overpowering sickness you produce. You: the nintendo undead, afraid of aging and of your inevitable death. Us: the alive and generative men for SEGA, who let go of mortality and sprint towards death gladly. Yes! We throw our lives into the BLAST-PROCESSOR = hydraulic-compressor trash-compactor meat-grinder.
An overblown analysis, yes, but ah! -this is your sin not ours! For you are the ones flooding forums, comment sections, not to mention video and streaming services with unending, neutering analysis.
Yours serves this purpose: to look back and laugh, to fill your middle-aged body with intellectual candy and soda-pop, to chain the world perpetually to the nap-time of your childhood (the 80s, the 90s), to assert yourselves against cardboard cut-outs of us (SEGA fans: the grouping of people from which your middle school bullies formerly came) by screaming into the void you inhabit and receiving back tucks-in-bed from your fellow mummies. You thought the fight was over? That you had won? You simply locked yourself in your room and declared yourself the winner! But now we bust down the door. Big brother wins again, weenie!
What we mean by our own previous overblown analysis is this: that the men of SEGA are men who are men and are nothing less. We do not pile up retrospectives because we are focused on our present lives. We appreciate and talk about the past, naturally, and of course there are some more fervent historians among us too, but the veracity with which you clap your hands and jump in the air over the countless whole-hour long videos about retro gaming which you produce we tiredly reject with an agitated, athletic back hand. Yes, it is our athleticism that creates the chasm of character between us and leads to our disgust with you -or at least it is our understanding and appreciation of athleticism. Men of SEGA are well-rounded, socially adjusted individuals. You can find us at times in gyms, out in the garden, or on a simple hike. We have flat disdain for those types who, with unkempt beards or with oily foreheads, devote doubly their time to the very subject of gaming with which we identify. It being for us not “our thing” but merely a thing that we integrate into our lives, allowing as any appreciation for art does a sharper discernment in whatever we come into contact with in our day-to-day. We are fine with letting go of things with age. We are men of SEGA but we are no longer childishly obsessed with those times which we remember fondly; they do not define us. But as you build up your mountainous collections about you, creating for yourselves proverbial pillow forts from which to hide from life behind, we come charging in with football helmets and hockey pads to destroy your babyish creation, us adults being finally tired of your incessant noise.
And how your fighting makes us laugh! You wait to take turns, you put on some classical music, and you can only handle two or three adversaries at a time. We make easy work of you. Eight or nine at a time without slowing down. And swiftly, the afterburner is engaged-|||MAXIMUM||||POWER|||
And now keeping to our ever fervent devotion to speed, we will briefly list our points:
      1. Blast processing is real and the crown of SEGA’s superiority. Would-be fast paced nintendo games experience slow down that is inexcusable.
      2. An abundance of action games is better than an abundance of RPGs and methodical games. The proliferation of hardcore and overly complex games has created a generation of “bug-men” while the concise and robust mechanics experienced in games with one hour play sessions provide a healthy maximum to leisure time and also foster sharper discernment in its player base. Content heavy games are only a positive in moderation.
      3. Sports games are awesome and particularly SEGA ones. That they are even separated out is merely categorical. They can be judged by their unique mechanics and executions of gameplay just as any other game. That they are taken from games in the real world is wholly irrelevant. For us there is no reason to separate reality and fantasy in gaming as the purpose of the medium is to transcend those separations. nintendo fans going out of their way to dislike sports games reaffirms their lack of character to us. We have admiration for the incredible acrobatics of the basketball court just as we have admiration for the incredible acrobatics of the platforming game.
      4. SEGA’s embrace of synthesizer limitations makes its music superior. nintendo seeks mainly to imitate already existing timbres, i.e. mainly tries to mimic orchestras in its more renowned sound tracks. This results in degrading onomatopoeia. The music found in SEGA games usually embraces the electronic genre generally and the specific synth capabilities themselves particularly. This results in music that is iconic and timeless. While nintendo’s music now sounds outdated, SEGA music remains its own animal. Put it this way: classic nintendo tracks are constantly being re-composed with better hardware and with live instruments to finally achieve their “true sound” but SEGA tracks are seen as already complete because they were made with the synthesizer in mind.
      5. Having the console that is two years older matters. It’s laughable to boast about hardware superiority when the consoles aren’t even truly competitors. SEGA was ahead of its time. It was the “genesis” of a whole generation of gaming and nintendo only followed in its footsteps. Perhaps any argument between SEGA and nintendo fans should have a two year period of unanswered shots dealt from the SEGA side.
Our case being made, I encourage my fellow men of SEGA to spread these points and this manifesto wherever the nintendo children raise their screeching voices. It is my hope that we may thus finally bully them back into submission as we always have before.

Man, I think that the Sega CD itself has to be filed into "What could have been". Hell, most of Sega's post-Genesis hardware should go to the same folder. What makes it worse is the fact that, from time to time, you get these amazing games like Soulstar for the Sega CD or Virtua Fighter for the 32X that show the real power of the hardware. I am such a huge fan of Road Rash so much that when social media came out I found Carrie Akre, lead singer of Hammerbox one of the bands that ended up on the soundtrack, and asked her questions about it. She says that her manager called her and said that their record label were asked for Grunge music and various bands. So the record label just gave EA some of their tracks. She said she doesn’t even remember them asking permission or her signing anything. I think she teaches acting or music in Washington now.

The engine in Road Rash 1 is actually superior to 2 or 3. The sprite physics are actually calculated as 3D objects, which allows for all kinds of crazy tricks and jumps while racing. In 2 and 3 all objects were reduced to flat, 2D objects that only detect collision. It was the price to pay for making the game split screen on a 16-bit system.

I didn’t know that. That’s pretty impressive considering it wasn’t a first party Sega title. While doing some research for a Sega Yu Suzuki video for my channel, it’s something that he began doing with his first Sega Super Scaler games like Outrun, long before the release of the Genesis. Interestingly enough, some of the early Super Scaler games that calculated physics in 3D used dual versions of the Genesis/Mega Drive’s Motorola CPU. By the time the Mega Drive released in 1988 in Japan, it became cheaper to add at least 1 of the Motorola CPUs at a slightly lower clock speed. After reading your very informative comment, my guess is that this is the reason why it was possible to pull that off in Road Rash 1, and with the lack of 2 CPUs, most likely why the 3D calculations were missing in Road Rash 2.

I have, however, been pretty spoiled in the Road Rash department since procuring my Panasonic 3DO. Despite the console itself failing pretty hard overall, Road Rash on the 3DO has absolutely no equal. Its nice to see a few games here and there that still play better on 3DO than other consoles that may have gotten the same game and Road Rash is one of those games. I still play my copies on Genesis often since I can grab a buddy and play versus with them, but other than that the 3DO Road Rash is my go-to for my Road Rash fix.

I remember picking this game up at a game store for $8.99 before I ever got a Sega CD & before the game shot up in price. I knew I wanted a Sega CD & was going to eventually buy one & road rash was the first game I got for the console. Looking at what it's going for now. I'm glad I bought it.

I got this new back around 96 or so on clearance at a Montgomery Ward. I too was disappointed about the graphics, as I felt RR3 was actually a better looking game. The experience was unique and still fun however. I didn’t have a 32-bit system yet, so I didn’t even know it was a sort of remix of that game. I didn’t realize the videos and still were ripped and downsampled, so I was impressed with how it looked as it was. Fun times. I do prefer the hud of the 16-bit games over the future releases, so that’s a plus for this one too IMO.

One amazing thing about emulation is that you can play these Road Rash games with a higher framerate. 150% cpu speed makes a pretty big difference in fluidity. Unfortunately, this comes at small cost of rider/bike animation bugs, but it's worth it imo. The animation bugs worsen as you raise the cpu speed, so I find that 150% is the sweet spot.

It wasn't even released in Europe, nor does it work on my PAL console with US boot up trick. I can only play it on my US CDX. Today they respect the install base of the previous generation and keeps releasing new games for at least 2 years or more, but in previous times it was launching a new generation that the previous one ceased to exist.

It was standard that once genesis games get swapped over to the mega CD , that they only added FMV and CD audio to it, they rarely added extra options to it,
If they had redone everything from scratch, that would,ve costed them waaay too much time & money to do so,
Sega was no exception among others, so am not that all surprised ,no.

My guess is this game had an incredibly short production time. Seeing as it came out in 1995, it's probably a miracle this even came out at all. Had this come out in say 1992, or 1993, we probably would've seen a scaling race engine. However, was it worth the development time in 19995 for the Sega CD with the add-on pretty much already finished? Sadly, probably not.
