This Trilogy helped me keep my sobriety. After 3 months without drinking I found a bottle that I hid in my house. I almost drank it and there was my DVD trilogy staring at me. Frodo fumbling with the ring. I heard the ring, whiskey, talking to me. Howard Shore’s beautiful music. In a matter of seconds I found the “ring” and cast it into the chasm of Mount Doom. My sink!!! Repeat this powerful statement, you don't want to do it. You don't want to relapse. You don't want to pick it up. I know your mind craves it and you think that you want it. But don't fall for the illusion. Once you fall into your bad habits, your mind once more and more. But funny enough. You get further from that feeling you are looking for which is probably love peace. Joy and fulfillment🎉

I am nearly 70 years old. The Hobbit (the book, c. 1937) was in my elementary school library. I picked it up when I was in 4th grade and read, "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." I was hooked. I must have read that book ten times. I spent my meager allowance on a paperback copy sold through the Scholastic Books program.
It wasn't until my 3rd year of college, during the years of Vietnam, Watergate, and civil rights riots that I discovered Lord of the Rings. All us hippies read Lord of the Rings. Our literature professors dismissed it as a WWII allegory or as "kiddie lit," or as one aging McCarthyist put it, "hippie lit." Little did they know that Tolkien has spawned a literary revolution.
The first attempts to make movies of the books were pitiful. Peter Jackson was still a young stripling hardly out of short pants and nobody had ever seen a desktop computer yet. CGI wasn't even in anyone's vision. Howard Shore was very well known as a composer of cinema scores, but Lord of the Rings is considered his masterpiece.
That's your history lesson for today, all you young folks. :-)

It’s like in the great stories Mr. Frodo.
    The ones that really mattered.
Full of darkness and danger they were,
and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end.
Because how could the end be happy.
How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened.
But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow.
    Even darkness must pass.
    A new day will come.
And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.
Those were the stories that stayed with you.
    That meant something.
Even if you were too small to understand why.
But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand.
    I know now.
Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t.
Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo : What are we holding on to, Sam?
Sam : That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.

My friend and i loved the Lord of the Rings books. We both loved reading the books and when we both turned 12, we could watch the movies (we were 11 at the time). My birthday is on May the 15th, his May the 26th. Time flew by as we were so excited to watch the movies. When i turned 12, i got the dvd's of all the 3 films, but i made a promise to my friend we would watch them together for the first time so, i waited until his 12th birthday. As soon as we came home from school, we made popcorn and watched them all in one sitting. It was an absolute joy to watch them. We both loved gaming so when we heard that there would be coming a LEGO Lord of the Rings game, we "jumped holes in the ceiling" my mom said. We waited for what seemed like YEARS for the game to release. And when the time had finally come, we rushed to the store and bought 1 disc. As soon as we got home we put in my xBox 360 and played it every, single, day. Make homework as soon as you come home frome school? No, play LEGO Lord of the Rings. We completed it in like 2 - 3 weeks. We knew there was an upcoming move from The Hobbit. We also loved reading the books of The Hobbit so when we heard that, we couldn't be more excited. The movie got released 2 or 3 weeks after we completed playing LEGO Lord of the Rings so we didn't have to wait long. Again, we rushed home after school to watch the new movie (our moms had gotten the movies for us). We loved it. We pulled an all-nighter. Around the time when the 2nd The Hobbit movie got released, my friend got sick. We first thought it was just a simple cold so we ignored it. But he didn't got any better so, he went to the doctor and it turned out he got Stage 3 cancer. We of course were in absolute shock. In a short period of time, it got worse and worse and he had to go to the hospital. He couldn't do much except lay in bed (this was around Christmas). The 2nd Hobbit movie had just released but this time, it didn't feel good. We couldn't pull an all-nighter and watch it as we did with the previous ones. As Christmas gift, i have him the 2nd Hobbit movie. We both were so excited to watch it together, even though it had to be different this time (i hadn't seen it yet). We had such joy watching it in the hospital. A few months had passed and things still wouldn't get better. Around our birthdays, things even got so bad he had to move to an other hospital. Things went a little better, but again around November things got really really bad. He sadly passed away, a few weeks before the 3rd movie got released. I couldn't stop crying for weeks. It felt so bad to watch the movie without him. When LEGO The Hobbit came out, i played it on the exact same place as we used to play together. The soundtracks, the books, the movies, the games, it all reminds me of him. Especially the soundtracks. Every year around our birthdays and christmas, i listen to this to feel more connected again.

I remember I was 18 when Fellowship first came out. A girlfriend of mine at the time was so excited to see it, having read the books in school. I was on the fence. Having seen the Burger King Commercials promoting this movie I thought it looked like a cheesy CGI messy kids movie. Then, I went to see it with her and as soon as the opening music and the opening back story of Sauron and the ring came on, I was IMMEDIATELY like "whoa, this is different. holy fuck." By the end I had the feeling that probably folks in 1977 had when they left the theater seeing Star Wars for the first time. I have not had a movie experience like that since 2001. Something i'll never forget!

My favorite recollection of reading it to my youngest son was when Gandalf fell in battle with the Balrog. My son was shocked. " Gandalf can't be dead ! That can't happen ! " To which I replied " Sorry son, Gandalf the Grey is dead. " It certainly heightened the appearance of Gandalf the White . Now in his 30s he still remembers that .

She even made models of the dwarves and Bilbo to enter into the fairs student entries that year. Once you go Tolkein, you never go back.

Sadly, 2 months before Battle of the Five Armies released, he passed away.

I first read from Tolkien in 1964 and have read all of him several times since then. After 76 years of life it is good to be able to go to a realm where honor and love and principles fight against evil of any kind. Just words on paper about a life of adventure, happiness and enormous despair; just like real life, but one thing was different. We could close the pages and reflect without worry and if needed revisit that one part that touched us so. Before the music came to punctuate the words these were haunting tales. The music, with the stories, become the notes of sagas, hymns to heroes and the soft touch of love on a face when embraced by a lover. Even though it is sad to know that one day I will leave to never visit it all again; I shall not look back. I like to think I shall take it with me.

I was 11 in late summer of 2002 when my Dad (a police officer) came home with our first DVD player, and one DVD with it, The Fellowship of the Ring. We watched half the movie, up to the point that they left Rivendell, and then turned it off because parents the were tired. Mom thought it was too scary to let us kids finish on our own. We had to wait a whole week to finish it :D. After that, I got the books for my birthday and I read and finished the LOTR trilogy before the Two Towers came out in theaters. I only got the opportunity to see the Two Towers in theaters once. Before Return of the King came out, I re-read parts of the book and then I went and saw the film. I saw it three times in theaters. I used to walk through the woods alone at night and believed there were was certainly elves up in the trees. Sam Houston National Forest in Winter is enchanted. These stories (along with my friends getting into the original release of World of Warcraft), kept me away from all the bad stuff that other kids in my area were getting involved with. A magical childhood if there ever was one.

Far over.... the Misty Mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must await, ere break of day,
To find our long forgotten gold.
The pines were roaring on the height,
The winds were moaning in the night.
    The fire was red, it flaming spread;
The trees like torches blazed with light.
The wind was on the withered heath,
But in the forest stirred no leaf:
There shadows lay be night or day,
And dark things silent crept beneath.
    The wind went on from West to East;
All movement in the forest ceased,
But shrill and harsh across the marsh
    Its whistling voices were released.
Farewell we call to hearth and hall!
Though wind may blow and rain may fall,
We must await ere break of day
Far over wood and mountain tall.

There is SO MUCH potential and they have a colossal budget and the casting is not filled with trademark all-stars but a ton of actors and actresses I haven't even heard of. But in the meantime, I will read the original trilogy to this. Theoden and company have just arrived at Helm's Deep and they can see thousands of orc torches in the distance coming in after them.

Man, I just went to see ROTK in theaters last night, and this time it just hit different. Maybe it’s that I’ve been consistently reading more of Tolkien’s actual work between each time that I watch the films, maybe I’m just getting older, but it was nothing short of magnificent. I was moved to tears multiple times…anything having to do with the friendship of the hobbits, Gandalf telling Pippin about the white shores beyond death, of course the ending. What a wonderful adaptation, and the score by Howard Shore elevates every single thing about it. Thank you to all who were involved, for bringing this timeless classic into mainstream cinema and exposing this many people to it. And, here I am crying again, but not all tears are sad

Indeed, beautifully said. The magnificent battles, emotional scenes, and the hope in a tough moment-all of LOTR gives this sense of beauty and home that I cannot describe. The fight of good versus evil is even in our lives, we must fight our inward desire to chose to do wrong. Even the people of Rohan with the aid of Aragorn and his friends could not defeat the enemies before Gandalf gloriously rode over the hill with the valiant army of Eomer. So do we need aid to fight the battles within us, an aid that can only come from a perfect person.
Also, I didn’t realize you could still watch LOTR in the theater, which theater did you watch it in?

At 17:27, for whatever reason, when I thought of the scene it corresponds to, I started crying. (The scene where Pippin, after searching the battlefield until night time, finally finds Merry.) It seems like the kind of scene that most people would kind of overlook or just say "oh, that's nice." But I really love it! I guess it's because it's the first truly happy, joyful scene we've had for a long time in the movie, and the music really reflects that. There's been heroism, outrageously epic moments, and peaceful moments like, of course the Houses of Healing immediately preceding. But the latter was calming and hopeful, not joyful. Here we have a beautiful scene where Pippin gets to see his friend again after being separated seemingly indefinitely from him by his (Pippin's) own mistake. And after Merry was mostly just kind of harsh and scolding toward Pippin after he made the mistake with the Palantir up until he left, Pippin now gets to see that Merry was genuinely hurt by Pippin having to leave him and now wants him to stay.
    "I knew you'd find me."
    "Yes."
"Are you going to leave me?"
"No, Merry. I'm going to look after you."

It is such a sweet moment, and we know that Sam lives a long, happy life. But for us who are only spectators, we never get to see the rest, never again get to see the characters we fell in love with. LOTR is a story that will never be lost to time, because we love it so much that we will read and watch it over and over, and we will love it the 1000th time just as much as we did the first.

It may not have a physical existence, but it definitely has a place in the values and dreams of almost anyone who has read or seen the movies. And more so for those of us that have done both. It only imprints itself deeper in our psyche, the more we read or see it. Hope, perseverance and truth will inevitably win out. THAT is the real message of Tolkien's Middle Earth.

My first read of the Hobbit was in the early 70's as well, and it took me another few years to get into LOTR. It was amazing. I envy you your firt time read through, esp since you haven't seen the movies. Every time I re-read LOTR I wish it was my first time. It's pure delight. Even the parts where Tolkien describes all things in minute detail. (which, to be honest, you might not need to worry about the first time through. Just read it for the adventure and the delightful surprises around every bend) I'd recommend the books before the movies. PJ did an amazing job, but seriously, you want to turn the pages and see what's next without the influence of the movies.

Tolkien left an indelible mark upon the world with his literary masterpiece. Its effects can be felt in all storytelling forms, more than half a century later.
I reckon the films took a bit of that magic and made it their own.

I bought the LOTR Collectors Edition Box set extended cut. It came in a Box and contains each of the 3 movies in their individual boxes. I still love to get them out every year or so and watch the full 6 dvds back to back. An absolutely epic tale. You simply cannot find anything in the realms of DnD that even comes close to this. I wish that there were more George Lucus' and Peter Jacksons' to make these epic tales.
