  • This is my favourite moment from the new Disney movie The princess and the frog.
Dr Facilier is now one of my favourite Disney villains!!
Note: I came up with the title name on my own.
But I do not own this

I love how this slightly hints at Facilier's past.
When he says "Aren't you tired of living on the margins? While all those fat cats in their fancy cars don't give you so much as a sideways glance?", he says it with such disgust and it implies that he's gone through that and likely far more in the past, which is what drove him to Voodoo in the first place. I would love a prequel story to see how Facilier ended up like he did.

Anyone else notice that when Facilier was talking about how the rich don't even give you a sideways glance, he looked so angry. He wasn't just talking to Laurence he was talking to himself too. That sort of thing happened to him before, which is why he helped Laurence and tried to convince Tiana. He knew what it was like to come from a poor background or to be pushed around.

I do agree with him probably wanting to get back at the upper-class, but there are a couple other points I can see. When he says to Lawrence that magic isn't real power, it's money, I imagine him lying through his teeth- of course magic is the real power! He's just using money as an excuse to get back at the rich families that kicked him to the curb when he was younger. He's obviously very charismatic and silver-tongued, seeing as he can convince Lawrence of both taking part in his scheme and keeping him from backing out halfway through. TL;DR- He's basically the best part of this entire movie.

JorDAMN True that, he was pretty ambiguous with his words. He's charismatic, a sly talker, can manipulate situations to his advantage and has the stones to temporarily sway a group of dark otherworldly beings to his way of thinking... maybe instead of voodoo he should've become a lawyer.

+k pex One of the many things I like about this movie is that Facilier and Tiana aren't so different. They both didn't grow up rich, but Tiana worked hard every day and focused on what's important, while Facilier chose a darker path to get what he wanted.

@@l3g0b0y6 Fits into his plan quite well.
-Lure a prince and his servant into a twisted deal
-Get the prince trapped and the servant guilted into attempting a better life so he can marry the princess
-Murder Mr. La Bouff to not only get a portion of the family fortune but also add the family inheritance and insurance
-Split all that money with Lawrence down the middle (60:40, like he said) so that he can pull more strings from the shadows
-Use those strings to lure more souls to his shady dealings, and pay off his debts through letting the Loa feast.
He used voodoo to get himself power and fortune in a niche area, but in order to pay off his debts, he had to make a very huge scheme. When you get something from Voodoo, the Loa expect to be repaid. Makes you wonder just how deep he got himself in debt. It's of no surprise that they claimed his soul, but how much debt he accrued may remain a mystery.

+Computernurd The way I understand it is that Voodoo is passed down generation to generation. Given the fact that he's Creole, I would assume one of if not both of his parents practiced Voodoo and raised him to do the same. Voodoo is a cultural religion from West Africa and Haiti, which is why many Creoles in New Orleans practice it given their African ancestry. So that would explain why he practices Voodoo. What needs to be explained would be why he's so sadistic. But that's something Disney usually answers in books.

Really gives you a glimpse into how Facilier became who he is and how he can understand Lawrence's own life...while giving you chills because he's using that common ground to ruthlessly manipulate him and planning to sacrifice everyone in New Orleans to get the wealth and power he craves.

Facilier reminds of Captain Hook a bit. They're both two of the few Disney Villains who have a humanizing fear. Hook is scared sh*tless of the Crocodile who wants to eat, and Facilier is in debt with his "friends of the other side",and clearly knows he's playing with dangerous forces. You get they're the main antagonists of their respective movie, but they're not untouchable, they're something else above them in the power chain that scares them.

This is a man who knows exactly what words to use.
It’s no surprise he’s a smooth talker and very creative with his words. And not ONCE has he ever lied. Sure maybe manipulate, but he’s a deal maker and he has not broken a single rule. The only rule he’s broken was when the contract was broken (the skull necklace broken by tiara) which got him sent to hell I’m assuming.
Over here you see him yell but he stops himself. He knows what words to use, and what words to not use. The other guy doesn’t even notice or care to make him finish as Dr Facilier starts talking about something else. Dr Facilier didn’t even need to finish a sentence, he just hopped onto another subject even though what he said before could’ve been very important, he stopped. He changes his tone and just goes “fun fact Larry” with no problem.
Now we know that in his song “Friends on the Other Side” is a song that swayed both Prince Navene and the other guy to all this voodoo contract, where Facilier HEAVILY forshadows how Prince Navene is going to be turned into a frog, but of course they didn’t notice. He still didn’t lie a single time in that song. And in that other scenario he made where Tiara has the voodoo necklace and she’s in an illusion where she’s in her dream restaurant, Facilier didn’t lie either. He was 100% correct about Tiaras dream and Tiara’s father. He made the deal feel so small because he made the dream feel so big.
On a side note to something I replied to someone else’s comment:
I honestly feel like it’s cause he got into some kind of debt with the “friends on the other side.” Which is why he has learned to be 100% honest in his deals, despite being a master of manipulation and smooth talk he still is truthful to his word by making his deal 90% dream and 10% the deal when he talks and persuades people. I feel like he already gotten into some trouble with his “friends” before hand. The doc is the least honest around his “friends” in my opinion (saying things like “just a little more time.” “I promise I’ll pay you back.”) He seems to know not to mess with them, and to be truthful and not **** with them.

Well if Lawrence hadn't screwed up, Tiana and Facilier would never have met; after all, they only met because Naveen ran into her. So thus, Facilier would have got control of New Orleans and given up the peoples souls to save his own skin. So he technically could have paid them back.
Unless, of course, you count the fact that the Loa have different interpretations of paying someone back, but rarely deal in peoples souls; Baron Samedi could be bargained with using chilli rum and cigars. So it could be his Friends just wanted a good bowl of kush and a Bob Marley CD.

I agree completely with everything you said.
I've noticed that as I've gotten older, I find Disney villains more and more interesting. Not perhaps because of what's done on screen, but their true motivations- the impetus behind their actions that drive the plot forward. THAT'S what's always been interesting to me. A character that can be sympathetic, even if not excusable, is fascinating.
If you think about it, most Disney villains kind of fall in that category. Scar, for example, is the younger brother of the king, and small and weak by comparison. From the moment he was born, the best he could ever be was second best.
Jafar has constantly had to be kind and polite to a sultan who happens to be a simpleton. Having to bend over backwards for someone else is always a pain, but doing it for an idiot? That would be rough on anyone. And despite serving faithfully, he never receives any measure of power. He almost had it when he finally found the Cave of Wonders, but it remained shut to him. He almost had the lamp, and it was denied to him. And he almost married the princess, and lost her. Despite his careful planning, it seemed like the universe conspired against him.
Or perhaps, look at Hades- Hades in Greek mythology, was the eldest of all the Olympians (the eldest son was traditionally the person who received all of the inheritance), yet gets to rule the Underworld- not something anyone likes.
Frollo is my absolute favorite- he's a man who believes himself pious and just, but can't escape from the fact that he is flawed as well. He sees his own flaws as the flaws of the city, and with every witch hunt he executes, he thinks that he's purging the city of evil, when he's trying to purge the sin from himself. He's a fascinating person, because a lot of his actions are driven by self-loathing, even if he doesn't recognize it himself.

    • @herofromthedark
      @herofromthedark 10 лет назад +8

      *****
Ah, Mother Gothel vs. the Queen- that's a great comparison. A character that isn't black-and-white is much more memorable than a character who is. This is true for villains as well as heroes. But a big difference is that a villain's motivation is typically (though not always) more important than the hero's motivation. A hero's motivation can simply be reactionary, but a villain, for the most part, tends to be much more motivated than the hero.
Take Nevine, for example- he really had no motives in the plot. But then, Dr. Facilier comes into the picture, and he already had plans in mind (and his motives are made clear in this video.
A villain's motives ARE the villain, and if the motives can be understood, then so can the villain himself. This scene is certainly speaks to that end- the Doc hates his lot in life, and hates the people born with more than he could ever earn. It's not a difficult sentiment to understand.

    • @herofromthedark
      @herofromthedark 10 лет назад +6

      kiraina25
I've always felt that her fame was kind of overblown. But if you think about it, she was the first of her kind- the first superhuman villain in a Disney film. The queen of Snow White was somewhat magical, but not in the supervillain way. Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan, Cinderella, Dumbo, Bambi, etc.- they all had normal villains who could be defeated by non-supernatural means.
Maleficent then set the standard for villains of her type and style. Jafar, Hades, Ursula, Dr. Facilier- they all follow in her footsteps, but I'd argue that they were better than her. Jafar doesn't seem to have as much presence, and Hades's humor sometimes undercuts his malevolent nature, but that's more of a character quirk than an actual derailing quality.
Don't get me wrong- I like Maleficent, it's just that I think that better villains have been made. But they really only came into being BECAUSE of Maleficent.

It’s implied he grew up poor and the rich people did nothing to help him.

Taking the word of a smooth talking witch doctor in cahoots with the forces of darkness, I'm sure that won't come back to bite him.

Well, the scene where he tries to tempt Tiana into helping seems to imply that his story is pretty similar to her own: Growing up with very little, being told he'll never rise beyond his meager beginnings because of his race, never getting any breaks in life, etc. But where Tiana swore to rise above it all by the sweat of her brow, Facilier tried to take the easy way out. Though it would be interesting to learn just how one forms a contract with "the other side".
