I mentioned this in another comment already, but I love the expressions on the Friends the doc is talking to them, 'cause they convey so much in just one little scene. The way they glare at him early on is pretty much "We're losing our patience, Facilier..." Then, when Facilier convinces them, the leader looks at the others as if to say "What do ya say, boys? Shall we give the good doctor one more chance?"
There's another meaning to them sharing those glances. They like the sound of his deal, definitely, but they also know that the arrangement will benefit them either way. If he succeeds, they get all those souls as payment and his debt is cleared. If he fails, they can collect on him to pay what he owes. Either way, they win.

@SupremeEgyptianGodsMan which are demonic /voodoo spirits. Watch the end of the movie, he broke the necklace which is a symbol of the deal so they took his soul
I kind of liked how the emphasized how voodoo isn't a controlled output. Unlike magic, you don't conjure it or master it because it deals with both spiritual and mental powers that can often build wills of their own. The reality of voodoo is it's a dark force that can be summoned but to get, you must give and if you can't, well no one will believe your cries let's put it that way. The spiritual part is the deadly part. It makes perfect sense for the masks to be in control here instead of Facilier. Technically though, voodoo is neither evil nor good, it's chaotic neutral hence why it was so easy for them to turn on Facilier even when he offered to pay back his debt in one go. It isn't what they get that matters, it's how far Facilier will go. There was no way for him to pay back his debt once entangled with them and they knew it. They just found him humorous to watch as he slowly sank himself deeper into the abyss until they got bored.
Tigressa101 Actually, when you look at it, real and genuine magic isn't like flicking a switch. It's all ritualistic and extremely picky, even breaking a single rule will result in terrible consequences. What's more, all magic isn't about your will influencing the world, it's about calling forth a spiritual force to influence the world in your favor. In conclusion, magic is not about the "swish and flick", it's more like "wheel and deal".

It would be cool if we could get him in that game as a minor antagonist, though I dont expect we'll be lucky enough to get him voiced XP unless they plan to voice a lot more?
Fun fact, the movie originally had it with Dr. Facilier being the son of Mama Odie but turning to the dark arts (presumably because he was impatient with gaining magic powers) and a showdown would have occurred between him and Mama Odie during Mardi Gras. I don't know about you guys, but I think that the Light vs. Darkness showdown during Mardi Gras would have been a little better than just his friends dragging him to wherever the Loa hang out after the amulet was smashed.
+okamigirl54 Also sense-he's not got enough 'credit' to channel them. Not unless his plan actually went off cleanly enough that they'd be happy to do that sort of thing.
I love Facilier and all, but there's so much personality in these evil masks-thingies that I almost wish they had a more "active" role in the movie. The power of animation and brilliant character design, even though it's just masks with no lines.
You know, that shadow effect is something that a CGI movie could never make quite as cool. While there's always problems with both approaches, the effects done by the shadows right there has to be one of the coolest hand drawn animations I've ever seen.
I think Rise of the Guardians did a pretty good job...if you can ignore that Pitch doesn't show any holes in his face when he becomes a shadow. Ironically, he pulls a Cheshire Cat when he slips into a thick void. It's pretty creepy.
I thought Jack was good not evil; also Nightmare before Christmas wasn't Disney right? and was this hand drawn? in 2009? wow, cool beans! see, not all cartoons are CGI now even though some of my friends think so
i do love the classic animation but also the modern other stuff can be great too; most ppl loved toy story; i loved little mermaid, beauty and the beast, and lion king most
I noted that Dr. Facilier looks like he was about to have a nervous wreck while contacting his friends from the other side? It really contrasts his confidence before in his villain song. At first during his villain song, it makes him look like he’s in control with the voodoo ghost magic. He’s so confident and really outgoing with his victims. But in this scene right here, he looks so nervous trying not too mess up while talking with his voodoo friends. Really shows that he’s not the ruler, but only a accomplice to the voodoo ghosts. It wasn’t until his defeat where he looks cowardly and desperate. Amazing visual story telling with this villain!
The art of Voodoo is more than just a religion, it's like a business transaction. In order to take, you must also give. And if you can't give, well... _they take._
I also noticed that when the necklace was broken towards the somewhat end of the movie, he said he still hasn’t gotten his “debt” planned through. I might’ve forgotten some of the movie or this was not in it, but could it imply that Facilier has a debt to fulfill/pay with the other side?
@@bird4005I think the implication of the story was that he had made a deal with them that he’d bring them souls in exchange for power. At the start of the story, he’s in control, but as he gets more and more desperate as he goes further into debt without success. He’s trapped, and no matter what happens he will inevitably lose. Facilier is doomed from the start and the loa will always win
Even before this scene when the amulet runs out of blood, he’s very hesitant about the fact that he needs to make another deal with his “friends”. Through his charismatic and nonchalant persona he’s hiding the fact that he’s up his neck in debt with beings even more powerful than him, and if he messes up he will be the one to have his soul served to them on a silver platter.
I absolutely love how evil Facilier's plan is, compared to most Disney villains. He's willing to trade an entire CITY and for what? A clean slate. When you boil everything down, that's what it amounts to. He wont change, he wont stop, he is willing to do all of this to get out of the deals HE made, and go right back to it. Its wicked and brilliant.
@@masterfarr8265 I definitely agree, but Oogie is 'messed up' like you said. He does stuff for his own entertainment, for the laughs, he's chaotic. Facilier is just doing all of this to get out of paying the cost for the deals HE made. Man, woman or child, he'll throw ALL of them under the bus. And be willing and ready to set up shop and do it all over again.
Yeah it's funny because even if his plan works he is going to make the same mistakes and end up in the same problem he is in now. He is basically like Bernie Madoff, the Ponzi scammer who stole from his own family even when he knew that he was going to get caught in a few days. He knew that there was no point in taking their money since he wouldn't get to spend it or use it to keep the scam going but he did it anyway.
@@noahdonnell9374 Actually it is. His 'Friends' are basically bankers that loan out Magik. He asks for something, he pitches what they'll get if he succeeds, and offers collateral if he fails. If They like the deal they take it. If not, they counter offer or decline if they really aren't interested.
well in some cultures shadows represent the soul of a man. and lets assume he isnt the first witch doctor to have "friends" its quiet possible those shadows once belong to people who made a deal and could not have payed back
Man you know your smooth and manipulative if you can get things from the other side to keep making deals with you even after being in huge debt to them xD
I believe that as well. Facilier didn't just get his "Friends" on the other side. He has to make alot of deals with them to be on his side. They don't seem to care about Facilier, even. All they wanted from him is to either honor his deal completely or take him to the Other side if he didn't.
This is why I love Dr Facilier. He made a deal with and set the terms for demonic spirits to do his bidding. That takes a lot of charisma I would assume.
This is how I think it would've gone down if the masks could speak. Facilier walks into the room where the masks are. Candles are placed around them as he faces them. Head Voodoo Mask: You'd better have a good reason for seeing us! Dr. Facilier: ( a moment of scilence) Friends... I know I'm in hock to y'all pretty deep already, but it seems our little- frog prince lost his way, and I need your generous assistance getting him back. The masks glare angrily. Head Voodoo Mask: You're testing our patience Facilier! Facilier: ( laughs nervously) I hear ya, now what's in it for you? Well... Takes out the doll and needle. Dr. Facilier: As soon as I dispose of Big Daddy Labouf, then I'M running this town! ( laughs as he reveals New Orleans). Head Voodoo Mask: hmmm... I like where this is headed! Other mask: Yes do continue. Facilier pushes back the setting. Facilier: I'll have the ENTIRE city of New Orleans in the palm of my hand, and you'll have all the wayward souls your dark little hearts desire! Some souls get sucked into the masks' mouths and they grin evilly. Head Mask: Yes... I like that! Dr. Facilier: Y'all love that don't you! So... We got ourselves a deal? Head Voodoo Mask: I agree. What do you say boys? The other masks smile and growl in agreement as well. Head Voodoo Mask: Alright Facilier, we have a deal but I advise that you don't fail us!
I wish the Loa did have voices outside of singing. That would’ve made the movie even better. And probably even a little scarier since those Loa do seem rather evil
@@DanteWesker612 more like neutral if you ask me. They will get your soul if you don’t pay up, but at the same time they will honour your contract if you complete it.
Facilier definitely has no regard for other human life, except as means to his own ends. If he would hesitate to kill, it would only be out of fear of retaliation if he didn't succeed.
Probably pays alot for his “parlor tricks”. He can grab an average Joe or a desperate person willing for anything. But he could think that the prince is his one way debt all free
I wouldn't mind if they put it in kh3 since they didn't the princess and the frog would be interesting world to see in KH4 Sora would have to help Neveen and Tiana and be like they're bodyguard and stop the shadow man and fight Dr facilier
The way Facilier talks to the Voodoo spirits reminds me of making a deal with the Mob. as their kind of "help" can be dangerous if he doesn't pay back his debts.
The face Dr.Facilier makes when he laughs is worth the price of admission alone. It's just golden creepy treats. Basically, a great example of the greatest Disney villain ever known in a bad movie from what I can gather. And he's got all the wayward villainy items on the villainy checklist anyone's dog little heart disires.
It wasn't a BAD movie, it was just... Average. 7/10, really. I've heard that they had to cut a lot of stuff due to time constraints, like a giant duel at Mardi Gras.
I really wish they told us how he even got involved with them in the first place. He is by far the most charismatic and interesting Disney villian, I would of loved more backstory of him. He's my favorite Disney character because behind all off it, especially at the end you see his desperation, which makes it all the more real.
So right around 1:10, I paused the video. Right before he says "bring" his cheeks puff out but the rest of his face doesn't move. I'm surprised i haven't seen any stillframes of this.
I got the impression that they didn't care what happened either way. Their deals seem to ensure that one way or another they'll get A soul, no matter who's it is.
Yeah, I had that feeling too. Like when he proposes his plan, the mask in the middle looks beyond angry. I think it´s because before this the souls they got were always from people who had agreed to a deal with him, while now he suggest they take innocent souls. Therefore he crossed a line and they stopped supporting him in earnest.
The bank isn't happy when you default on a loan and they seize your collateral at a loss. They wanted him to succeed because it was a larger payday for them. Just like a bank, the extra interest they could collect was worth the risk of extending a little more credit, but they were pissed at him for 'defaulting' and only got his soul for it.
When Kingdom Hearts adopts this World, It's obvious his "Friends on the Other Side" will be the Heartless (or them being affiliated with the Heartless and Darkness itself). That and those "Shadows" will also be replaced by Heartless too.
unfortunately we might have to wait for the next KH game, *sigh*. But honestly, maybe the main enemies could be a combination of both Heartless and "Friends." The shadows and heartless are vessels for the "Friends on the other side." And what would make the encounters with these Shadow/"Friend" hybrids extra spicy is that whenever the heartless would appear, the "ARE YOU REAAADY" theme but without Dr. Facilier singing, but still with the build up of instruments and drums. And, maybe along with this theme starting when the heartless/"Friend" hybrids, the colors of the voodoo spirits could spread and cover the wall, while bopping along to the "bom"'s, while looking like rampant flames.
The Loa's (Facilier's friends) eyes glow red, green, and fuschia in the film but the colors aren't used as mood colors. In this scene, the Loa's eyes glow fuschia and when Facilier angers them, their eyes don't turn red. When the Loa grab Facilier to haul him off to their domain, their eyes are green (three have fuschia eyes) instead of red and they're enraged! The Loa's eyes were also green for Naveen's transformation and they were likely enjoying the show. Just an observation. :)
@@anthonymiller2032 the voodoo spirits: very well dr we have a deal, but this offer that you speak of better be worth our time or those souls won't be the only ones going to the other side.
@BeachballSU That's correct. And in fact, the correct term in voodoo for the spirit world is actually "The Other Side." They really did their research.
The coolest Disney villian in a long time. Can we have a movie just based on him? No heroes, just him going about his shady business with his awesome powers.
Don't worry he gets his vengenance against his friends in Hell by becoming an overlord and making them souls he owns (only to gamble them away to the Radio Demon.)
I love this guy, but there's one thing I don't get. How was he going to give the Loa (or whatever his "friends" were) all the wayward souls? Was he going to kill people? Have the spirits run free and attack everyone? Make them all slaves? That part always confused me.
I believe he would arrange for his friends on the other side to claim the souls of the people through some kind voodoo, hoodoo, or things he hasn't even tried once he was in control of new orleans
I know you posted a while ago, but my guess is, he figured with more wealth and power he could expand his notarity in New Orleans, which would let him trick more people into deals for their souls or fate
The movie implicitely states that only people who agree to mingle in voodoo (wheter knowing the full details of the deal or not) can be claimed by the Other Side. Basically all Facilier has to do is convince people that Voodoo is a good thing and then even a simple handshake can seal the curse. Supposely he become rich and famous, he could use his status to influence a lot of people organizing huge parties and festivals voodoo-themed or things like that.
1:26 - 0_0 I just came across a theory that the shadows are the souls of Disney Villains past. The one seen here is not only female in appearance, but is "swimming" like an octopus - Ursula.
I was thinking that too! One day i was like: How there are made those shadows and souls or whatever? Then I came across a random thought: What if they are disney villians in seek of revenge?!? (yup, those are my random thoughts)
Now that you mention it, those shadows do look like Disney villians. And Disney is known to put Easter eggs of other movie characters in their pictures.
I love Dr. Facilier. His laughs are so cool and evil the way I like it and same thing with Jafar. Jafar's laughs are the best laughs I love. Dr. Facilier's laughs are really good too. Jafar and Dr. Facilier are my most favorite Disney Villians. Ursula and Hades are my second. Maleficent and Yzma are my third. Cruella De Vil and Captain Hook are my fourth. Scar and Queen Of Hearts are my fifth. Ratigan and Madame Medusa are my sixth. And the rest of the villains are awesome too. But my least favorite is Sykes cause he doesn't have anything in his mind but money, but he did kidnapped Jenny in the end and he's not what I'm really thinking.
I liked Scar. My 6th grade homeroom teacher is scared of Scar so Scar is my favorite character in The Lion King. I also shared with Mufasa as my favorite character as well, so Scar & Mufasa are my favorite characters in The Lion King.
I remember having to explain to my little sister what his overall scheme was, how if he had all the money and power, people would have to come to him if they needed financial assistance and he could convince them to sell their souls to his "friends"
I didnt actually think all that much about that, I just went, “oh yeah he’ll be rich and powerful and that means he gets the souls of the people, yes, no leap of logic here.”
I think Dr.Facilier he does have some of Judge Frollo and Jafar in him man these guys have red black and purple clothing the shadow man the royal vizier and the minister of justice great the best disney villains mostly they're songs epic Friends On The Other Side Disney's The Princess And The Prince Ali (Reprise) Disney's Aladdin You're Only Second Rate Disney's Aladdin 2 The Return Of Jafar and Hellfire Disney's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame
Okay, they GOTTA do a sequel where they bring Facilier back. He's just too cool to leave stuck in voodoo hell or wherever he goes at the end. I heard in the original draft of the script, he was supposed to be Mama Odie's son. Why don't you do something with that Disney?
@lotten16 Actually...I'm pretty sure that's a representation of one of the chief Loa, like Damballah or Baron Samedi. The Loa are powerful spirits who act as intermediaries between voodoo priests and the spirit world. Facilier made a deal with them in return for power, and when he didn't pay them back...they claimed his soul for their own.
Now THIS is a Disney villain. Not that two bit bitch Hans, "Mr Kabuki" who wasn't even a real villain or the racist lamb from Zootopia. Luckily, Moana is done by the same people of TLM, Aladdin, Hercules and PaTF, so we might get a cool villain again
The94Venom I.....tolerated it. At least it made sense from a storytelling point of view, and just wasn’t yet another Scooby Doo rejected villain. But enough is enough.
Well, I dunno, I kinda like Bellwether, Hans was okay, and I dunno anything about Mr. Kabuki. Tamatoa is probably the closest we've gotten to "classic" Disney Villain flavor in recent history though, since he's the most transparently evil character in the film and has the same hammy flair a lot of older ones have. I see him as kind of a mix between Radcliffe (greedy, loves shiny things), Hades (smooth talking and affable, but also ruthless) and Yzma (crazy beyond belief and loving every minute of it).
The problem is that many of the newer Disney villains are twist villains which by their very nature are less rememberable because it's like switching out an established character for a less established one near the end of the story. Due to how differently they act once revealed.
Everyone is saying that one way or another, the spirits win. Because if the doctor wins, they get all the souls to their hearts desires. If the doctor failed, they at least get one soul. So everyone's right, either way the spirits are getting their due.
shadow wraiths: body-less demonic spirits, me and my family, especially my brother seen or caught a glimpse of them back in Tennessee. and trust me we could tell if its one. they usually appeared after something tragic happened or if we were alone in one of our houses...just thinking about what we seen makes me feel uneasy...
0:52 Big Loa: What do you guys think? Small Loa: Either his plan succeeds and we get thousands of souls, or he fails and we get his. Either way, we win
Either he succeeds and they get a multitude of souls for their own ends or he fails and they claim his soul as payment for the considerable debt he owes them. Basically, they can't lose.

They turned out to be frenemies but nice one. I thought maybe there was a kfc for the man of color. Im not rascist though.
Tigressa101
Actually, when you look at it, real and genuine magic isn't like flicking a switch.
Hes dealing with FAE like spirits, in the end dealing with FAE is equivalent to dealing with the biggest rules lawyer loanshark you can find.

They probably cut that for time. Like how they did with the little mermaid.

You know, that shadow effect is something that a CGI movie could never make quite as cool. While there's always problems with both approaches, the effects done by the shadows right there has to be one of the coolest hand drawn animations I've ever seen.
We are in agreement.
Well, Nightmare before christmas wasn't exactly CGI but it was still "3D" and had a pretty cool shadow effect with oogie boogie lol
But that shadow effect you talk about was hand-drawn. While Nightmare Before Christmas was stop-motion, some parts of it were hand-drawn animated.
I think Rise of the Guardians did a pretty good job...if you can ignore that Pitch doesn't show any holes in his face when he becomes a shadow. Ironically, he pulls a Cheshire Cat when he slips into a thick void. It's pretty creepy.
I saw a good CGI approach with that Jim Carrey "christmas carol". The spirit of Christmas future was a disembodied shadow.
Thumbs up if you saw the silhouette of Jack Skellington. Wiki says they gave him a cameo appearance as one of the shadows being summoned.
I thought Jack was good not evil; also Nightmare before Christmas wasn't Disney right? and was this hand drawn? in 2009? wow, cool beans! see, not all cartoons are CGI now even though some of my friends think so
i do love the classic animation but also the modern other stuff can be great too; most ppl loved toy story; i loved little mermaid, beauty and the beast, and lion king most
mulan was great too
I thought Jack was good, why would he be a dark spirit? Makes no sense; totally out of character for him; maybe he was desperate for $ or something?
what's an Easter egg in this scene? there's no Easter egg in this scene
It kinda makes me wonder who from the masks was the one in control though?
Even before this scene when the amulet runs out of blood, he’s very hesitant about the fact that he needs to make another deal with his “friends”.
Through his charismatic and nonchalant persona he’s hiding the fact that he’s up his neck in debt with beings even more powerful than him, and if he messes up he will be the one to have his soul served to them on a silver platter.
The Shadows running through the town at night just looked stunning!
Its wicked and brilliant.
not as messed up as Oogie Boogie wanting to kill santa and take over christmas just for the fun of it
@@masterfarr8265 I definitely agree, but Oogie is 'messed up' like you said.

They did, you can tell at the end when they drag him to hell how happy the were. They had been waiting a while for him to slip up
I got the impression that they didn't care what happened either way. Their deals seem to ensure that one way or another they'll get A soul, no matter who's it is.
+persianking44 I think that is the case too.
It's like what Stan lee once said. No good villain actually thinks they're a villain. They're just doing what they do to accomplish an ends.

"ALLEZ! TOUT DE SUITE!"
Dr.French accent here.

I do love how the movie draws from the folklore of New Orleans
Don't worry he gets his vengenance against his friends in Hell by becoming an overlord and making them souls he owns (only to gamble them away to the Radio Demon.)
I love this guy, but there's one thing I don't get. How was he going to give the Loa (or whatever his "friends" were) all the wayward souls? Was he going to kill people? Have the spirits run free and attack everyone? Make them all slaves? That part always confused me.
Bitsy83 He was planning to let them roam free and consume as many souls they wanted.
I think its when they eventually die the his friends get to keep their souls.

10 months later.......And meh......Tamatoa was.....okay. But he had only like 4-5 minutes of screentime.
Eh, I liked the twist with Te Ka.

I love that part where he sends them off in french
ahhhh, the beginning of my childhood trauma 😌
Honestly, the whole movie I was rooting for Dr. Facilier, way more than I was rooting for tiana
Keep in mind, he also knew Lawrence the butler's name on their first meaning. He can see into the future and such, his powers probably help with that.
Wouldn’t it have been awesome if these guys had more screen time, creeping into little kids’ bedrooms and wreaking havoc all over New Orleans?
That main voodoo head is so creepy, especially when it smiles!
Everyone is saying that one way or another, the spirits win. Because if the doctor wins, they get all the souls to their hearts desires. If the doctor failed, they at least get one soul. So everyone's right, either way the spirits are getting their due.
That's why you never put yourself in debt to a lwa.
shadow wraiths: body-less demonic spirits, me and my family, especially my brother seen or caught a glimpse of them back in Tennessee. and trust me we could tell if its one. they usually appeared after something tragic happened or if we were alone in one of our houses...just thinking about what we seen makes me feel uneasy...
Bring bright lights, shotguns loaded with rock-salt/silver/blessed rounds.
camramaster or highly charmed objects works just as well :)
cool
DXAB91 that type of spiritual case is what the "Hunted Collector" would call a soul attachment.
I don't know how similar Loa are to Fae, but I always feel better with something made of silver and something made of iron on me.
1:02 I see jack skellington as one of his "friends"
0:52 Big Loa: What do you guys think?
Small Loa: Either his plan succeeds and we get thousands of souls, or he fails and we get his. Either way, we win
0:54 you can almost hear them say "Don't screw this one up!"
It feels more like "Fine Facilier, have your deal, either way, the debt will be payed off one way, or the other"
Dr. Facilier is my Favorite Disney Villain Animated Character that I Love So Much!!!!!!! :-D
kev p me too!!!!
All I remembered from this movie was an alligator playing an instrument.
Dr. Facilier- "Hey there demons. It's me. Ya' boi."
@SupremeEgyptianGodsMan
I know. I was just quoting a meme. :)
Keith David is awesome. He voiced Dr. Facilier, Goliath, the Arbiter, and King Andrias. So many great roles, both good and evil.
Those are some really cool masks
Either he succeeds and they get a multitude of souls for their own ends or he fails and they claim his soul as payment for the considerable debt he owes them. Basically, they can't lose.
There's a reason why they call him The Shadow Man.
I pretty sure this movie made me obsessed with the supernatural and paranormal when I was just a kid lmao
