As an owner of a 1996 Celica, I've been saying for years that the FR-S platform looks far more like a Celica than it does an AE86. In fact, if it were up to me, I'd put a version of the 3cyl engine in the GR86, make it a liftback, and rename it the Celica and rename the GR Corolla the GR86, or the GR Corolla 86.
What I've noticed about Toyota is they provide a GREAT value if you buy the boring base or mid-level trim. Mom bought one of the first 2019 Rav4's to hit the street in late 2018(new body style that year). Paid $30,000 out the door with taxes and everything for an XLE which had heated cloth seats, sunroof, power hatch and a few other options. I was there to help her shop and the upper trim levels fully decked out were $6000 more, for what, leather seats and AWD??? Not to mention the more expensive hybrid Rav4 and plug in variant which cost even more. This Corolla GR plays to the same folly because of stupid dealer markups and Toyota not flooding the market with them. In theory you really do get A LOT more for the extra $13,000 in "MSRP", comparing a base Corolla to the GR version. Its like going from a base Impreza to a WRX STI.
I had Factor and it was pretty good! The food was fresh and you can tell they just cooked it before shipping. For a single person or a household of two, it’s a very economical option.
One day I started following Greg too. Greg started driving like a crazy person - going thru red lights and traffic stops. Then Greg pulled up to a gas station and told some people - his face white with terror - "That guy is following me. Call the police" - and took off. Turned out it was not Greg.
Glad to see toyota having their engineers make fun cars again. I personally have a 1997 Celica liftback manual that I find fun to drive and don’t plan on getting rid of anytime soon. When Toyota puts effort into it, they make awesome cars
I tried for a year to put money down at two different local dealerships to get one of these. Neither would let me put money down. "We dont know when we are getting one" or "the service managers best friend has money down on the only one we are getting this year" Got sick of the run around and went and got a 5.0 instead. not disappointed in my purchase..

A little about a lot: I love the fact that RCR exposes me to cars that I will never drive. much less own, at my time in life and financial obligations a "new" car will never happen again... Japanise cars were never in my wheelhouse so, again, it's nice to get the exposure... My John Deere lawn tractor has a Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel; great engine... As you said, dealers gonna deal. But I'm not going to deal with them.
Absolutely Totally blown away by the Shabbos Goy reference, it makes up for all the weird voices you do on the other videos. You used it correctly, the analogy was executed brilliantly. Observant Jew here, totally in awe.
It’s an interesting proposition. Mazda 3 Turbo, Acura Integra, GR Corolla. Now that the initial hype has died down, and the interest rates are moderate, you can find these, with the differentials, for $2,000 off MSRP if you search nationwide. Vermont, Wisconsin, etc.
The reason the 86 twins are the rightful successor to the AE86. The defining characteristic of the AE86 is not that it’s a hatchback….it’s that it was light/nimble/rwd. The GR Corolla (&Yaris in Europe) is a heavy awd car
When we look back at the history of the early 21st century enthusiast car, we will see with clarity that it was the dealership that killed them. They don't sell because people can't buy them when the middle man feels his wallet's not full enough. So manufacurers rarely make them anymore. I'm so glad Toyota is at least trying. Thank you, Morizo.
I wish the screens in these new cars were retractable. They always seem like an afterthought slapped onto the dash and something that will come loose and fall off at some point from an aggressive button pushing episode.
The despicable unobtainium factor makes the disgust factor increase. Die hard fanboys might still love it but most will write it off due to the downstream effects of the unobtainium factor.
It's larger than most 3 cylinders but the cylinders are not really that big. It would equal out to a 2.1l 4 cylinder. I don't feel like that is what keeps it from pulling more at the top or revving higher, it's just modern factory car tuning.

"I can quote Friedrich Nietzsche, I know what I'm talking about"
Absolutely love the way you weave philosophy to hilarious bits and back to car reviews all in twenty minutes, brilliant video
I saw signs of Toyota starting to lose their minds when they came out with a TRD Camry which makes about as much sense as a Corvette with a trailer hitch but I like this GR Corolla. It reminds of our old 1985 Celica GTS hatchback that had 4 cylinders and 5 speeds and those pop up headlights.
In Australia we had the trd aurion which was a supercharged 3.5 v6
To be fair the trd Camry was basically a homologation special for NASCAR
TRD Camry is a good idea to compete with V6 Accords and Chargers
I had an '85 Celica ST. Damn good car. I miss that thing every day.
@@chasebarber6154 Same here. It just didn't work for us when the kids came along. If I had it all to do over I'd figure out some way to keep it.
it's so frustrating. i built one on the website and it came out to $37k, looked at actual dealer prices and not a single one below $50k

@@austinpeterson4898 Oh nothing fun. Diagnosing a misfire on cylinder 6 currently but hoping to lift it by mid summer if all that's up with cylinder 6 is a plug/coil/injector issue. All depends on how deep this misfire goes lol
Had no idea these guys are from Delco.
I got mine for 38k (core) with the performance package (upgraded brakes and Torsen differentials, Circuit shift knob and spoiler! Had $500 left over and bought the circuit edition hood. You have to put it in prayer to God, be patient and be willing to walk if the deal is bad and settle for any color. I waited a full year for mine. Good luck and happy hunting.
Honestly, I love the look. Slightly aggressive, mostly unassuming, with a little bit of emphasis on the fenders. It’s a sleeper. Perfect.
Thanks!
3:51 Agreed, it as a Corolla could be the 86 while the FRS/GR86 should have been a Celica
hear hear!
Just got my 24, loved your video for this car, I completely love it and it's perfect for the dogs when I flip the seats down
Guys, masterful work once again!
Nietzschian discourse and Romance Repo. Truly superb bits and superb writing.
Thank you!!
"Leto Atreides the second reaching for the golden path."
Freaking awesome line.
I nearby died. RCR is back.
I had Factor and it was pretty good! The food was fresh and you can tell they just cooked it before shipping. For a single person or a household of two, it’s a very economical option.
Someone needs to help get Mr.Regular to review an LFA.
Imagine the underwear situation.
THE UNDERWEAR HAS BEEN BROWNED
dude you're deep I can't even see you anymore haha. Never expected this level of philosophizing in car reviews. I love it
One day I started following Greg too.
Great car and reminds me when car manufacturers weren't afraid to roll the dice in the American market.
As a member of the proletariat, I'm bummed this is out of reach. It's a far cry from the golden days of cheapo econo S-box with a sporty model that basically everyone can get but nobody wants. Now, everyone wants it, but nobody can get it.
only affordable performance cars will be Evs soon enough.

I got the chance to drive a morizo at the toyota dealership I work at and it changed my perspective on imports, i am a die hard American big V8 muscle guy and the gr corolla impressed me of how well a turbo 3 cylinder can put down power and feels way more refined than most modern muscle cars feel, The AWD system is awesome you can dump it and the tires wont even chirp, the handling is amazing and the shifter which I originally thought would be too long of a throw felt perfect when banging thru gears. Might have to order one when we finally start gettin some cores in (and prices go down smh 😭)
For those who can't afford a Corolla GR, look into a JDM Only Toyota Caldina GT. Think AWD Toyota Matrix with a 3S-GTE.
how are we supposed to own that until 2025?
@@rubberwoody there are 1998 and 1999 models which can be imported in 2023/2024. Also, Canada didn't bend over to the automakers *as much* and they have a 15 year import law. You might be able to find some North of us.

Great video as always. Youre the only person I know of that can tie in a "Gettysburg" quote into a corolla review (great movie btw).....very appropriately I might add. Keep up the good work brother!
Was with a buddy looking to buy one of these. Dealer didn’t want to give a price. Finally did. None to test drive by the way. 65k. Salesman said that he could put in an offer for my friend, “kind of like, I’m your lawyer”. We went down the road and he bought a 2023 WRX and loves it.
One of the few sports cars you can buy new these days that has both a manual transmission and all-wheel-drive and also a turbocharged engine. Very few of those, these days.

Roman's part was genius! Easily one of your best videos
Mr. Regular knows MF DOOM. Automatic cool points for that 👍🏿
A hot Toyota, killer Roman content and deep-ass philosophy? What an episode 🙏
Mr Regular has to be one of the smartest content creators on RUclips. RCR has not reached a million subs yet solely because of the genius writing and wit that both Mr Regular and Roman bring. They do not pander to the mouth breathers.
I'd argue his complete and utter ignorance of actual maintenance best practices have kept him from breakout success.
Thx for offering this in manual only. And a hand break. Auto manufacturers, we want more of these
That idea that should be the AE86 successor is so true and revealing.
Corolla, hatchback, Sporting are better suited than RWD (though not solid axle) and two-door.
The 2 outer exhaust tips are the normal exhaust and the middle exhaust opens up when you hit the throttle

AE86/ GTS Corolla was a fantastic car! I had an 1986 with a manual. It was a blast to drive! This GR looks like it would be similar but with more hp.
Most of the fun in my NB MX-5 happens above 4900 rpm. Also huge props for the DUNE reference! Also love that Toyota is making real cars again.
A little about a lot:
I love the fact that RCR exposes me to cars that I will never drive. much less own, at my time in life and financial obligations a "new" car will never happen again... Japanise cars were never in my wheelhouse so, again, it's nice to get the exposure... My John Deere lawn tractor has a Yanmar 3 cylinder diesel; great engine... Romance Repo actually sounds like a good business model. It could work... Mr. Regular is my go to for the AP English courses I never took at the college I never went to, but I appreciate immensely...I dig the free philosophy discourse also... At my age I'm glad I will probably experiance the ICE for the rest of my life, electric is cool, but not Tri-Power 389 Pontiac in a 63 2+2 kool, or small displacement turbo kool... RCR rocks.
What a cool car! Better get shopping for one at a reasonable price :)
Good luck!!! Seen one with a $96k price tag….I’m not joking
oh God i think I saw that same listing, I HOPE it's the same listing and that there's not another one out there,, terrifying to see when I'm nowhere close to huge population centers where someone might ACTUALLY pay that ridiculous price

This is old skool RCR. Very good car talk, and the Nietzche was perfect.
The most unaffordable Corolla ever

not only is it way more expensive than a Corolla Hybrid or a Civic, it isn’t as economical or even more practical. Feels like I was born too late in this car market

tbh I agree, I like this and the Yaris GR more than the (new) 86 and Supra GR. I'd have loved a straight 4 yes (hell even a straight 5 lol), but at least the 1.6T inline 3 seems to be good enough for hitting the apex while going to the 9-5 or the groseries.

The only downsides of this car are gonna be availability and dealer markups.

great car. Good luck buying one at anything close to MSRP though. I wanted to buy one this past summer. I had cash in hand, no financing needed. There were waitlists requiring nonrefundable down payments and absolutely insane markups. Got a used STI instead and had enough money left over for some nice upgrades and the inevitable EJ woes. As you said, dealers gonna deal. But I'm not going to deal with them.

Pretty decent looking Corolla, I haven't seen one in real life yet.

The reason the 86 twins are the rightful successor to the AE86. The defining characteristic of the AE86 is not that it’s a hatchback….it’s that it was light/nimble/rwd. The GR Corolla (&Yaris in Europe) is a heavy awd car
Love seeing the Mazda interiors in the new Toyotas.
Excuse me, do I hear a high pitched V10 in the background?
I wish the screens in these new cars were retractable. They always seem like an afterthought slapped onto the dash and something that will come loose and fall off at some point from an aggressive button pushing episode.

So was it Greg or what?
It's larger than most 3 cylinders but the cylinders are not really that big. It would equal out to a 2.1l 4 cylinder. I don't feel like that is what keeps it from pulling more at the top or revving higher, it's just modern factory car tuning.
