RIP Bela Lugosi (October 20, 1882 - August 16, 1956), aged 73
And
RIP Boris Karloff (November 23, 1887 - February 2, 1969), aged 81
You both will be remembered as legends
I always knew Lugosi was a Scorpio. He has those perfect Plutonian vibes as Dracula.
@@raulquiroz7492I think the star sign stuff is pseudo-science..
Bela in Dracula started it all with Universals Monster Marathon but let's face it Boris Karloff will always be THE ORIGINAL Frankenstein 😮😊
Boris Karloff was Born to be the Frankenstein monster. Lugosi was born to be Dracula.
Exactly!
Without a doubt.
Spot on!
Boris Karloff is Frankenstein's Monster. Lugosi wasn't bad. But honestly, nothing compares to Karloff's iconic portrayal of Frankenstein's Monster. Lugosi is better as Dracula
AMEN
Listen up Sam:
You're the world's most correct man today. Every letter and every syllable and every word you said is spot point on, and the truth of it echoes all down through the ages.
Congratulations!
It's been a pleasure being silly with you today. You deserve a cold beer. Get me one while you're at it.
As a kid I could see the difference. Karloff was the only real Frankenstein for me. He was shear terror in my eyes. Lugosi seemed comical. I remember me and my brother being disappointed when we saw him.
@@jitsroller That’s why Bela Lugosi will always be better as Dracula. Because Dracula is much more fitting role for Lugosi than Frankenstein’s Monster.
@@sammontanez6908 Boris Karloff, as the Frankenstein creature, had more natural and fluid movement but Bela Lugosi had more robotic movement as the creature. What is missing from this comparison are the two commonly ignored facts. Boris Karloff portrayed the creature when he had his original abnormal brain and Lugosi played him after Ludwig Frankenstein put the man with broken neck's brain (Igor's brain) in the creature.
Karloff's version of the creature was innocent-like, had an almost childish wonder about the world around him. But equally, he had a jaded view of the world in short thanks to Fritz who abused him. So, he hurts the people who treats him terribly or feared him. For the ones showed kindness towards him, he returned the kindness
Karloff was the only one one that give the creature a voice which was the creaature's own words. "She hates me like others" "We belong dead".
The other fact is the original 1931 "Frankenstein" was a serious horror film and "Wolfman Meets Frankenstein" was relegated to be a "B" movie which had a campy storyline. Karloff warned of that as they made more sequels.
Karloff was able to capture both the monsterous side and the inncoent side of Frankenstein´s Monster.
Karloff is the quintessential Frankenstein Monster as Lugosi is the quintessential Dracula. It is their masterful performances, along with the help of great directors, writers, musicians, and fellow actors that made these two literary characters into cinematic icons that continue to thrill new generations to this day.
I believe that Boris Karloff portrayed Frankenstein's monster better than any actor that I've. It suited him more better.
He did a legend
Only one who came close was Christopher lee
@@bilbebop3693 Totally different portrayal Sir Lee.. That creature WAS purely homicidal. Nothing redeeming in that creature. Superb performance that Mr. Lee did but for a totally different take of the iconic role that the great Karloff did. You feel the plight of Karloff's monster. Reaching for understanding and help.
It suited him better*
Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff both played great Frankenstein monsters, nothing between them both, great actors.
Take into account, when Lugosi is stumbling along with his arms outstretched, it's because the Monster is supposed to be blind (as made clear at the end of the previous movie, "Ghost of Frankenstein"). But that detail had been eliminated from the switch after filming those scenes, so people think the Monster is walking around that way for no reason.
Boris Karloff is The definitive Frankenstein no one comes close IMO.
While I love both actors, I would have to go with Karloff as the best Frankenstein Monster.
Now I can only wonder what if Boris Karloff would have played Count Dracula
but he didnt
He probably would if he wanted to
@@angelaeast1335 yep probably
The original Frankenstein by Lugosi rejected the offer for the original Frankenstein...
@@franklujan8304 that's true
Glen Strange was excellent too. He also played Sam the bartender in Gunsmoke
Personally Glenn Strange is my all time favorite. Especially in Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein.
He was the second best. I heard that in house of Frankenstein Boris Karloff was sort of a mentor to him on how to portray the monster right.
@@louisborselio8608 agreed. I think next to Karloff he is the second best Frankenstein.
Besides the acting, of course, much of what made Karloff's monster more iconic is the suitability of his natural physical characteristics: His angular, thin, lanky stature; The sunken, hollow, cheeks; The shape of his skull; His teeth. These characteristics simply suited Jack Pierce's makeup better.
Lugosi and Chaney just look... stupid.
Bit harsh!
Yeah, it sounds a bit rough to say they look stupid, but they do. No knock on them or their legacy, but their talents just suited other characters far better.
Karloff was Mary Shelley’s - Frankenstein’s Monster personified! He is the epitome of how the monster should look like from her books. And the way he acted out this character was phenomenal. He is scary but you can’t help but feel pity for him at the same time.. No one else can match. He will forever be Frankenstein’s Monster.
The Universal Film with Karloff wasn't even remotely close to anything in the novel. Not even in the same ballpark. In fact many people think they shouldn't be considered the same work. I'm assuming you never read the book.
you tell a difference the makeup is different and belas dracula look comes out in his Frankensteins version, karloff will always be Frankenstein forever
While Lugosi's performance as Dracula cannot be beaten, alas, no one can equal the performance of Karloff as the Frankenstein monster. NO ONE.
chill dude
Christopher Lee is a better Dracula[IMO]
@@enemyofdavis6830
IMO, if it wasn't for Bela Legosi, THERE WOULDN'T EVEN BE A DRACULA. And stay off the drugs...
@@enemyofdavis6830 BS. Lugosi’s portrayal is the most imitated version of the character ever.
@@ltyler01 lol different opinions my dude. no biggie
I’ve watched and loved the Frankenstein movie since I was a child back in the 1950’s. I just realized that creature is attracted to and reaches for the light, because that’s where his life-force originated.
boris karloff is the ultimate frankenstein!
Frankenstein is not the monster you stupid dolt!
Fun fact apparently Legosi was originally offered the role of Frankenstein’s monster but turned it down due to him not wanting a role where he’s covered in tons of makeup and no dialogue. However he was impressed by Karloff’s performance and kinda regretted saying no.
Freeze it at 00:14 second mark.
The brilliance of Jack Pierce.
Not a word spoken by Karloff when exposed to the light his eyes and face say it all.
Innocent, childlike and wonder on the inside with a terrifying exterior..
Brilliant benchmark performance never ever duplicated by all those that followed playing the Monster..
There was Karloff then everyone else..
I like all the ( old ) movies like this, maybe they can be put back on TV again.
Why is there even such a video????!!!! Karloff IS Frankenstein's Monster.
I totally agree. No one could portray the Monster the way Karloff did.
For the purposes of comparison you dork 😂
Boris Karloff will always be Frankenstein monster he’s the best one that ever played it I think but I think as far as Lugosi is as a star in the horror genre and he was the best Dracula hands down but both of these actors were great horror movie icons for sure two of my favorite list along with Vincent Price
Lugosi' s monster was never written as being completely blind as is evident if you watch him throughout the film. His vision is obviously greatly diminished as per the last film, GOF. However, before the battle with the Wolf Man, during the electrical rejuvenation sequence, you can see through various short, deliberate, close ups of the Monster's eyes, that his vision is being completely restored. The Monster does not battle the Wolf Man blind. It was both foolish and unfair to Lugosi to not have any reference made to this. However, even with his sight restored, Lugosi plays the Monster with the same threateningly extended arms. This appears not to be related to being blind. It is Lugosi' s interpretation of how to make the Monster frightening.....and inescapable. No need to apologize. It's' s a great performance.
Of course there's no comparison to Karloff. But Bela was also given a script in which the monster was blinded so that's why he's acting the way he is. Sad that he turned down the original role because it was a lumbering oaf of a part... and that's exactly what he's remembered for :(
So one Frankenstein is picking flowers with a little girl while the other is kicking the Wolfman’s ass this is a tough decision
Caught you!!!!
Hi I Love Your Channel
Karloff is the best, but I believe respect is due for Chaney, Lugosi and Strange as they all did a fantastic job playing the Monster.
The only one who came close to Karloff was Glenn Strange!
Abbott and Costello meets Frankenstein was a brilliant film haha
@@Johnny-mb9vy Yes it was
I thought Chaney Jr did a good job. He, Karloff, and Strange were the best
Certainly, Karloff made the Monster role his own, but I not only didn't have a problem with Bela's interpretation, I thought his was the best Non- Karloff version of that era, despite using stunt doubles for the battle sequences!
Just remember Lugosi’s Mosnter was Blind…but for some reason they cut out his dialogue in Wolfman vs Frankenstein. Even tho in some scenes his mouth is moving but they muted him. And thus the arms out forward became a stereotype.
People always seem to forget that Lugosi's portrayal is a completely different monster from what Karloff played. They forget that when Lugosi played the monster he can speak (although his dialogue is muted) and most importantly he is BLIND, all because in the previous movie Ygor had his brain places in the monster, the blood types are different thus causing his blindness. But, all of this information is left out of Lugosi's portrayal (brilliant move on the producer and director's part) causing people to laugh at his acting. Given how it was originally written Lugosi did a very competent performance.
People shouldn't laugh at it
These old universal horror films hardly followed continuity in the sequels. How many times has Frankenstein’s castle been destroyed and then next film it’s still standing. People laughed at Lugosi’s accent in test screenings of this film but I find it hard to believe since he spoke as the monster at the end of ghost of Frankenstein and I don’t think anybody laughed before so why now. I prefer Karloff more, but at least Lugosi had more energy here than Lon Chaney jr in ghost of Frankenstein who never made a sound and looked like he was sleep walking.
Lets not forget Bela Lugosi was 61 years old during filling this give the man props he was in that heavy makeup and those boots and needed a stunt double for the fight scenes but he did follow continuity with the last film
To be fair the Monster had Abby Normal's brain.
If Lugo’s dialogue was kept in, his performance would be better regarded than it is.
BRAVO as I've been a big fan of the Universal Frankenstein films ever since ages of 7 & 10 back in the day of the early 1970s.
Although I liked when they first showed close ups of Karloff as the monster in the original due to the scary looking set of eyes as well as that evil sinister grin Bela Lugosi put on as the monster while being given back the strength the monster had, many others found Lon Chaney Jr and Glenn Strange who both were bigger men had the perfect size especially Strange who stood roughly 6ft-5inches.
In all fairness, Lugosi's monster looks like an old man that just climbed out of a wheelchair.
I'm the only idiot in the world that thought side by side meant something completely different. So Who's the winner? Glenn Strange from Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Who else.
Had Lugosi taken the original offer to play Frankenstein, Karloff may never had been known as Frankenstein. Lugosi thight it was beneath him to not speak in a movie. Pride goes before destruction...
Glad that this says Frankenstein’s Monster. I can’t stand it when people see the monster and say “It’s Frankenstein”
no… no it’s not…
jonthepitman I agree with you 100% on this!!
A funny thing is that I myself within the ages
of 7 & 10, believed that
Frankenstein was the monster, not its creator! But that's such thanks to most people thinking Frankenstein as the creature!
Frankenstein was the actual name given to the monster by his owner. And I've often wondered where he got Frankensteins dick from before stitching it onto Frankenstein.
poolworld1 nope. Wrong. The creature is never named.
His name is Lurch!🤗🤗🤗
Technically since Dr. Frankenstein created the monster, he is in essence it's father so the monster would get his surname
0:45 I think that’s the only time in the film where the monster is called “Frankenstein.”
Well, he is his son in a manner of speaking
I liked the way he was careful not to step on her gown when he was carrying her LOL
Lugosi TRIED to play Frankie, but Boris had a lock on it. Karloff was a better actor and better mime, too. But I guess you could say the same about Lugosi's "Dracula." No one did it better.
Believe it or not, this version to this day , my ex will not watch it!
The scene where Karloff turns around is Frightening to say the least! AND my ex is 66 and still can't watch it like many that were scared when it first came out .
A true CLASSIC that will never be outdone! Keep your CGI and so called "movie stars " today! ALL GARBAGE (IMO)
The most hazardous aspect of electrical overloads are the large structural members that tend to fall out from above. 7:18
Karloff was the iconic monster with some good human qualities. You felt sorry for him at times though he was still a killer. Lugosi, however, seemed more sinister, mindless, and deadly. A dangerous brute with no kind side at all. As a kid watching both, I was more afraid of Bela’s version than Boris’.
How about Glenn Strange?
And how about lon Chaney
Or Christopher Lee.
Glenn Strange look was closer to Karloffs Frankenstein than Lugosis version,
but strange was in Abbot and costello meet frankenstein Strange was good in that role, but hes not Karloff
@@michaelloder5150 He was also in House of Frankenstein and House of Dracula. He also did The Colgate Comedy Hour and did a gag publicity appearance as a masked flagpole-sitter - revealing himself as “The Monster” He played the monster more often than Lugosi & Karloff together, that's why I mentioned him. (Or the same amount as both together if you only count big movie appearances.)
Always thought Glen Strange Frankenstein was terrifying
Lugosi was great as Karloff’s sidekick
Karloff?
@@zacharyflewelling1117 Lugosi was Ygor in the original James Whale Frankenstein
Sidekick???
Karloff hands down. Lugosi is Dracula.
Karloff's gaunt face was _so_ much better suited for the Monster than Lugosi's rounder one. Lugosi was offered the role of the Monster before Karloff was, but he thought it beneath him since it wasn't a speaking part, and turned it down. He accepted, in 1943, for Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man, the part of the same mute Monster he had disdained to play in 1931, because his star had fallen quite a bit in the intervening twelve years, and as we all know, ended his career acting in low-budget stinkers like Plan 9 from Outer Space, because it was the only work he could get.
Boris Karloff is the ONLY Frankenstein's Monster
Bela Lugosi is the ONLY Dracula
Karloff: Guurrrrrrrrr
Lugosi: look at me I’m Frankenstein.😒
Lugosi was offered the role before Karloff but said no
Glen strange was brill, as well as karl of, always thought glens was most frightning
Karloff was number 1 Glenn Strange was next . Bela was Dracula and Ygor he just wasn't a good Frankenstein.
There is no comparison. Purely contrast. Only the deepest of empathy and pity for Karloffs emotional performance.. Powerful. His performance has no peer.. No Lugosi, Chaney, Lee or Deniro. Not even close...
In my opinion, " nobody cares ,I know"
Casting Bela as the monster was not a good move, especially when they were going to have the monster speak.
Another casting snafu was Lon Chaney Jr. as Son of Dracula .
Bela is Dracula!
Lon is Wolfman,
Boris is the Monster.
Looked genuinely super tall even though he was around 6-3 I that costume.
Post Some Parts From THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN
Wasn't it said that originally, Lugosi was to play Dr Frankenstein, then Universal wanted him to play the monster; when the screen tests were done, management felt he wasn't right for the monster.
Ironically, Lugosi was the first to be given the role of the monster. But the shoddy make-up (that made him look like the Charles Ogle monster from the 1910 short film) and his reluctance to play the role caused him to quit. His resignation from the role was vindicated in the 'Meets the Wolfman' movie as he gave his all but couldn't capture the character like Karloff could.
Here's some trivia. Had Lon Chaney Sr. lived he was slated to play Dracula. And maybe even the Frankenstein Monster. I wonder how those films would have worked with HIM in the roles?
Karloff's was better, but Lugosi had my favorite growl!
When he growls in this clip, he sounds Hungarian (which, of course, he was).
Lugosi just felt, sadly, comical in the role. He did not have the look to pull it off.
I like Karloff’s version of the monster followed by Glenn Strange, and then Lugosi.
oddly enough if I was to die, this is exactly how I would return
I like the video but thar is no comparison logosi was given a script for a blind monster but the movie was changed in the edit.
Se nota la diferencia entre uno y otro actor.
La personificación de Karloff,es mucho más siniestra, reflejada en el semblante del Monstruo de Frankestein.
"Universal" was disappointed when Lugosi declined to do "Frankenstein."
Karloff had Lugosi beat in any Role even if it was playing a Turnip.
I think there's one case where Bela would have come out on top and that's his stunning performance in "White Zombie"
Bela as Igor carried "Son Of Frankenstien"...Karloff as the monster was relegated to almost a bit part.
Idk which 1 one is better
Me either lol
Boris for the win! 😊
I don't think you'll get a more iconic performance than Karloff's monster. One of the issues is that the design is based on Karloff's features. Slapping that design onto Lugosi just doesn't work (at least for me).
For years I thought Lugosi was an inferior actor. At the same time, I loved the actor who played Igor in later films. I didn't realize that was Bella Lugosi.
I was terrified of this when I was young
many were, see my post!
Lugosi WISELY turned down Frankenstein! When your the FIRST to PLAY an ICONIC Character, your USUALLY the BEST! As HE was with Dracula and Karloff with Frankenstein!
So the iconic walk was from lugosi version

Well, the truth is out now and, as you can see from the reply above yours, sounds like they're scrambling to keep the wool over replaced over their eyes. LOL! I bet they're losing sleep over this, serves them right for the lies they published about Bela. Magna est veritas!

Karloff; no contest!
I would have to go with karloff
RUclips! Redefining "Side By Side" since April 28, 2018!!!
Karloff rules!

That is great film quality, nice one. And wasn't Karloff fantastic?
As a lil kid Lugosis Frankenstein scared me more
Karloff portrayed a man that was literally recreated from different body parts and given the brain of a serial killer by mistake. Lugosi portrayed the monster in a similar way but Karloff's version was much more dramatic, his reaching his arms towards the light for example was a reference to heavenly light and his yearn for it. Karloff character showed confusion at times whereas Lugosi's didn't.
Karloff easily! Lugosi looks like a cheap Japanese remake.
captain cow Lugosi don’t look like a cheap Japanese remake
You got that right. Can't play Dracula. The one and only Christopher Lee, the best.
Fighting Godzilla? They made that one . . .
@@christopherarnett2851 bela lugosi is the best Dracula

I HAVE TO SAY I AM WITH THE HORROR COUNSELORS IN THIS CASE!!!GARY BAILEY KING OF DARKNESS
No two ways about it Karloff was the best Frankenstein followed by Glenn Strange,Lugosi just wasn't that impressive in the role neither was Lon Chaney Jr but both mastered thier own monster characters with the Wolfman and Dracula
I actually prefer Lugosi Frankenstein monster. Has more of a hulking look.
The Wolfman was as agile to the extreme that Frankenstein was rigid; off script, Frankenstein would not stand a chance.
To me Karloff was the best and only monster. So let’s compare Frankensteins to The Three Stooges. Curly was the best and greatest third stooge. Curly=Karloff. Shemp=Glenn Strange, Joe Besser=Lon Chaney Jr., curly Joe=Bela . I know it’s strange logic. 😁
Bela is Dracula karloff is the monster...
Glenn Strange played the best Frankenstein
Where's Karloff vs. Lugosi? I see only Chaney, jr., and Lugosi fighting.
a lot of the fight between the wolfman was another actor playing the monster
It is sad but true
I like Karloff's role as Frankenstein better
Karloff is the best frankestein
Karloff will always be the best Frankenstein
It's Herman Monster's great great grandfather.
CArloff as Frankenstein ANY day...
Sam Montanez said it best.
He was right!
Now I don't have to taint the water supply with massive quantities of skittles and give everyone cavities!
It's not really a fair comparison, Lugosi was playing a monster that was supposed to be blind and could talk until the last minute they cut out all of the Talking part so it's not really a fair comparison
None of that matters, he Lugosi looks terrible in the makeup and lumbers around like an idiot. Karloff's performance is sensational humane deeply nuanced sympathetic. There's is no comparison
This is a non brainer karloff is frankenstein and lugosi dracula case closed.
I find the Bela cult kinda funny and always trying to win...I do think he was great in many roles but it's like a personality cult.
