The Supremes are the standard for any girl group. Mary Wilson is the 3rd member. Elegance personified! They were the hit makers for Motown even before the Temptations!
Btw, my girl looks awesome tonight...thanks baby
You should watch the movie...Cooley High, pretty much an example of a 60's movie with lots of songs from the 60"s era like this one! Bet you BOTH cry at the end!!!
I agree. The gold standard!!!
Don't forget Cindy Birdsong!
@@BaronessErsatz Yep. She replaced Florence Ballard.
The sound quality reminds me of when I'd have my transistor radio under my pillow at night, smashed up against my ear 📻😂... It brings that nostalgic feeling of how much we need music in our lives ❤️🎶
Now it's your smartphone.
I haven’t thought about that in years! What a blast from the past. Thanks for the memory! 😀
That brings memories back, although from a very young age I had a radio on my nightstand I went to sleep with. Probably because transistor radios weren't around yet 😀
Now I'm 73 years old and use a pillow speaker plugged into my phone. Still like to fall asleep to good music!
Omg me too. I had a weird little radio you would alligator clip to metal. I listed to a new York city station and I live in Canada near New York state border.
me too lol
The Supremes are what all vocal "girl groups" are measured against. Some other songs of theirs I would suggest include "Reflections" (my personal favorite), "Love Child", "Someday We'll Be Together", "You Can't Hurry Love", "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me", "Come See About Me" & "Back in My Arms Again". For Diana Ross' solo music, I suggest "Do You Know Where You're Going To (Theme from "Mahogany"), "A'int No Mountain High Enough", "I'm Coming Out", "Upside Down", "Touch Me in the Morning", "It's My House", "One Love in a Lifetime", "Reach Out & Touch (Somebody's Hand)", "I Heard a Love Song", "Remember Me" and her duets - "Endless Love" (with Lionel Ritchie), "You're a Special Part of Me" (with Marvin Gaye), "Ease on Down the Road" (with Michael Jackson - from the movie "The Wiz" - actually, you should listen to that entire soundtrack). For Florence Ballard's solo songs, y'all should check out "Love Ain't Love" & “It Doesn’t Matter How I Say It (It’s What I Say That Matters)”.Florence Ballard's life was cut tragically short when she died at age 32. Mary Wilson was the 3rd member of The Supreme's. She had a solo hit with "Why Can't We All Get Along".
Someday We'll Be Together is my favorite Supremes song!
'My World is Empty Without You' is my favorite Diana Ross and the Supremes song.
OMGs, Love Child! Frickin great song!
That is a long list of hit songs... You don't really think about it till you see them written down. Thank you....
Reflections and Love Child are my favorites too. Those songs really show their strong sides and how they weren’t just light and airy all the time.
"Love Child" is a powerful song, just because of the subject matter and the lyrics.
In my opinion, the song ain’t no Mountain high enough is the MOST POWERFUL! Love you two 💕
Same thing I was thinking!
I was thinking that, too, but it's hard to tell how much of the belting is Diana Ross versus her backup singers.
My favorite part still is her, "Ow!" After 🎶 "Ain't no mountain high enough, Ow!" 🎶
I thought she did "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" after she went solo.
Ain't No Mountain High Enough is a Diana solo
This sounds just doesn't exist anymore. Pure VOCALS!! That's SINGING!!
When the Supremes were making hits, I remember so many times when any of their songs came on, any young female within listening distance would suddenly burst into the back up roll and sing along, great times..
I would have been 3 or 4 years old when these songs came out. I had an older teenage cousin that would babysit us. She would crank the radio in the kitchen and sing along to this and bop around in her capri pants. Good memories...
Mary Wilson was the third member of the group. She was still performing until she passed away suddenly last year on February 8 at 76. Besides being a beautiful singer, she was also an author, motivational speaker, business woman, and a former US cultural ambassador.
It is with deepest regret that I just heard that Cindy Birdsong, the singer who replaced original member Florence Ballard, is now at death's door @ the age of 83. It seems Ms. Birdsong has had a series of severe strokes to the point that she is in a "vegetative state", where she can no longer care for herself & has been in several assisted living facilities & now needs a conservatorship to manage her care & finances. How sad! When you get old & sick beyond return, the vultures (relatives) will come & pick your bones clean & leave you to die & basically this has happened to Ms. Birdsong, she has one son & reportedly one brother, David Hewlett & Ronald Birdsong, respectively, who are trying to take conservatorship of her affairs, but @ this point, it's up to a Los Angeles County judge.
From a fan of The Supremes/Diana Ross & The Supremes, I pray God's blessings upon you, Ms. Cynthia (Cindy) Birdsong, may you fly with the angels.🙏✝️
The Supremes were HUGE. Diana Ross after the Supremes, reigned supreme.
HAHAHAHAHJAHAHAHAHAHAHA NOT
"You Can't Hurry Love" "Where Did Our Love Go" "Come See About Me" "Someday We'll Be Together" "My World Is Empty Without You" "You Keep Me Hangin On" "Reflections" "I Hear A Symphony" and "Love Child" are some other hits of theirs. They are so legendary and so glad they chose to make music for us to enjoy.
I always loved “Nathan Jones”.
There are at least a dozen great Supremes tunes including You Can’t Hurry Love, Reflections, You Keep Me Hanging On, Love Child etc
A more "angry" Supremes song would be "Keep me hangin' On"- Powerful, angry vocals. Love this group...
How about Diana's spoken passages in "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone"
Originally written and performed by carmine apiece and Vanilla Fudge
@@johnvance3011 You Keep me Hanging on was written by Holland-Dozier-Holland for The Supremes. Vanilla Fudge did a remake of the song about a year later. I am unfamiliar with Carmine Apiece.
Diana Ross,Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson were the original Supremes. Barry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, sought to capitalize on Diana's popularity and renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes. Florence Ballard left the group in the late 60's and was replaced by Cindy Birdsong. The group went through several lineup changes over the next decade. The Supremes were groundbreakers who encompassed grace, beauty and elegance.
Mary Wilson was the 3rd member. Mary Wells was in another Motown girl-group.
Florence Ballard had a little-known but great post-Supremes song called Love Ain't Love. Check it out. It's on YT!
Mary Wilson not Mary Wells.
Mary Wells had great solo hits including " My Guy ".
@@tamifaulkner4103 Mary Wells "My Guy", a classic song.
Everytime I watch the movie "Dreamgirls" I always think of The Supremes💞🎤😎
Their "Love Child" song they belt out.
The Temps and Supremes did “I’m gonna make you love me” together.Excellent.
One of my faves
The lady in the middle was the late, great Mary Wilson (1944-2021), the only original member who stayed with the group all the way through. Great reaction!
The girl groups back in the Motown days were the best. This is a fantastic song too. The other one is Mary Wilson
Mary Wilson died a year ago February. I like I Hear a Symphony
@@Maya-bu2rf Yes we’re losing some great people these days. I love that song as well I Hear a Symphony.
@@Cynthia... I like a lot of their songs and that is one of my favorites. My absolute favorite female singer is Phoebe Snow. She was not given much radio play with the excuse being no one could choose a genre of music she fit in. She sang jazz, rock, folksongs, gospel and just about everything except country and rap.
@@Maya-bu2rf Yes she is amazing also Phoebe Snow.
The Supremes were an extraordinary group. Backed up by the legendary "Funk Brothers" who rarely ever get mentioned. ♥
Edit: "The Funk Brothers members are considered among the most successful groups of studio musicians in music history. Among their hits are "My Girl", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "Baby Love", " I Was Made to Love Her", "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone", "The Tears of a Clown", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and "Heat Wave". Some combination of the members played on each of Motown's 100-plus U.S. R&B number one singles and 50-plus U.S. Pop number ones released from 1961 to 1972." - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Funk_Brothers
The Funk Brothers created the SOUND OF MOTOWN. Without them, Motown would not have been the most successful business in the history of Detroit, Michigan!
I would recommend Joan Osborne as a Female Friday artist, in her version of "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" featuring the Funk Brothers off their documentary. 😉
Paul and John considered the FUNK BROTHERS the Greatest of ALL TIME!!! And who drove The Beatles to pursue PERFECTION!!!
So many more Supremes songs to do. Try “I Hear a Symphony” or “The Happening” which was a song they did for a movie.
Funny thing. It always seemed odd to me that I went to the grand opening of "The Happening" in Boston at the Savoy Theater and the live band they had before the movie was The Velvet Underground!
I loved it because I was a big fan of both and they did a great show, but I wondered why they didn't have The Supremes since they did do the theme song for the movie (great movie too). Maybe they had a scheduling conflict?
You should do Love Child by The Supremes. A social message powerhouse of a song back in the 60's. Diana will surprise you when she lets it loose with power on the end of this song.
"Love Child" "Someday We'll be Together" are powerful.
Jay/Amber, their "Where Did Our Love Go", "You Can't Hurry Love" and "Come See About Me" are next for you!!!!
BABY LOVE was the Supremes’ 2nd #1 in their first string of 5 consecutive #1s.
The clip they’re watching was filmed in London, for the BBC.
BABY LOVE was Motown’s 1st #1 in England. HUGE in 1964. That opened doors for Motown World Wide.
The Supremes had at least 12 songs to hit number 1 on billboards top 100.
absolutely....Biggest music group with The Beatles
The Supremes: Diana Ross,Mary Wilson, Florence Ballard- all very talented. R.I.P to Florence and Mary. Try reacting to Reflections or Someday(we'll be together)
Stone love is My favorite Supremes song with Jean Terrell, sister in law of Tammy Terrell on lead vocals, up the ladder to the roof is also a great Supremes song with Jean on vocals
Check out their song" Reflections". It's powerful for in the mist of the deeper changes that was going on. Between Vietnam War, those who were against it versus for it. The issues in other parts of the world as well as here in the US.
YES!!! Love this one too .... it was also the Theme/Intro song for the "China Beach" it was an early 90s tv show about the Nurses & Doctors of China Beach during the Vietnam War ........ totally worth a watch :)
@@86forever I remembered that show. I always try to catch listening to the song. It gave me more of the idea of what was happening back then. Everything happening all at once in the 60s especially
Been recommending billy vera for months. At this moment is a great song of his
I agree. "At This Moment" by Billy Vera & The Beaters. I remember it being used very effectively on the TV show Family Ties.
"The Happening" Is a great #1 hit for the Supremes that is more upbeat and has a more powerful lead vocal from Diana Ross.
My favorite! Love the juxtaposition between music and lyrics.
Great tune. And also from 1967, Love Is Here and Now You're Gone!
Love that song. ❤❤❤The Happening
I remember hearing this for the first time on an 8 track my step daddy had in his truck back in the 60s, that started my love of Motown. Ain't no mountain high enough, best song.
"Love Child" (1968) has strong vocals and one of the most melodic, "ear candy" endings ever. The Supremes were #3 behind Elvis and the Beatles, in terms of the number of hit singles during the 1960s.
"Angelic" is the word you may be seeking for her voice.
This played on the radio everywhere when my age was still in single digits. Music was everywhere. What a time to grow up!
Absolutely amazing group. I know you're gonna love this. ❤
The supremes had so many hits and were played constantly on the radio. Great songs with Diana’s distinctive voice. You knew it was her after 2 notes. Not like now where everyone has generic auto tuned voices.
A magic time of my life. Motown and the 60's musical revolution at the same time!
A CLASSIC from THE ultimate Motown Girl Group the Supreme Supremes
The Supremes were one of the best Motown girl groups from the 60's. Most of their early material was written & produced by Berry Gordy or Smokey Robinson. They had so many great hits such as "Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Back In My Arms Again", "I Hear A Symphony", "You Can't Hurry Love", "Love Is like An Itching In My Heart", "Love Is Here & Now You’re Gone", "You Keep Me Hangin' On", "Love Child", "Someday We'll Be Together" etc.
Let's not forget the greatest writing team of Holland-Dozier-Holland (HDH) Brian & Eddie Holland & the late great Lamont Dozier!
Give everyone their proper dues.🤴
The Supremes helped define the Motown sound. One of the absolute best and always stop to listen to them. Their music can soothe a damaged soul.
Florence Ballard sang lead on many of the songs during the Supremes early years. Diana Ross supposedly had a relationship with Motown founder Berry Gordy, who shifted the focus of the group onto Diana. After Diana Ross went solo, Mary Wilson led the Supremes and the group continued.
They were the queens of AM radio, on every juke box, all over the world.
Don't forget Mary Wilson she had a short solo career after the Supremes broke up!
I spent my career as a newspaper reporter, and I once had the pleasure of interviewing Mary Wilson when she came to my town (long after the Supremes' heyday). She was lovely. I also got to interview The Fifth Dimension (minus Marilyn and Billy) and members of the Temptations.
Now you need to react to Darlene Love. She was in a ton of girl groups in the 60’s. She also has a great solo career. Check out her recent hit “California Nights”.
TRUST ME On This Classic,,
Diana Ross "Love Hangover"
A MUST HEAR..TRUTH!!
What a way to start Female Friday!! You should hear Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Stop, In the Name of Love, Stone Love, Come See About Me and Can't Hurry Love.
Ain't no Mountain High Enough - yes!
Her voice is so soothing. In the 60's you heard music over a tinny sounding AM transistor radio. Any belting out would be lost because of the poor quality of the speakers. Most Motown records were heavy on the base and drum (Beatle records also) to counteract the limited range of the radio. Backup voices also had to be full and consistent. The Supremes records met all requirements beautifully. Even today their sound is fantastic!
That is so interesting. Never thought of them having to adjust voices because of the limits of the Equipment of the times.
Motown's influence on the Beatles can't be understated. There's a reason "with the beatles" has _several_ Motown covers on it.
There's a great documentary called "Standing the Shadows of Motown," about the label's house band. It features modern artists doing classic Motown tunes, with that great band. There's a song you should do from it:
Joan Osborne, "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" (original by Jimmy Ruffin).
That's a fantastic documentary. One of my favorites.
This was my introduction to Joan Osborne. She was phenominal!
Yes, Joan Osbornes performance of that song is EVERYTHING!
I'm truly hoping that on a female Friday SOON, you'll react to Anne Murray! ( Danny's Song, You Needed Me and any others by her) Thanks again! ( I'd put her voice in the same category as Karen Carpenter) Love y'all! 😊 👍 ❤
I'm hoping for "Can I Have this Dance"
ANNE MURRAY
Snow Bird her biggest hit. Love our Canadian songbird
Yes!! Anne Murray is a must. My choice however would be Blue Finger Lou. All are good.
'You Won't See Me' was one of my favorites from Anne Murray. Think around 1973.
@@loritajohnson5664 Oh yeah - another great choice!! One of my favorites also.
They had so many great songs. My personal favorite was " My World Is Empty Without You".
The Shirelles are another great all female Motown group.
Female, yes, but Motown? I don't believe so. Anyway, songs are:
"Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow"
"Soldier Boy"
"Mama Said"
"Dedicated To The One I Love" (famously covered by The Mamas & The Papas.)
"Baby It's You" (covered by The Beatles on their first album.)
"Boys" (also covered by The Beatles.)
The Supremes, they don’t need to be flaunting T&A like many current female singers. They were right up there in the charts with the Beatles.
By the way, The Supremes is still the only female vocal trio with the most #1 hits ever according to Billboard Magazine. They have 12 #1 hits featuring Diana Ross as the lead singer. Plus Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard round them out. Baby Love is one of those 12 #1 hits. Motown Records also have two other female vocal groups on their label. They are Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and The Marvelettes.
Loved that song!
Florence Ballard was the lead singer when they started out as the Dream Girls-that is, until Barry Gordy(Motown Founder) heard Diana Ross sing. Florence passed away when she was just 32. Seems there was a riff between her and Diana surrounding her weight, as she was a full-figured girl. She was forced out of the group and replaced by Cindy Birdsong. Florence had 2 daughter's who, sadly, are on Welfare and living in Detroit.
They started out as the Primettes They we're never called Dream Girls. your thinking of the Broadway play. And Florence's children she had three are no longer on welfare that clip you saw was/ or read about is about 15 years old.they have changed for the better.🙂
Lovely women with fantastic vocals. The Supremes truly were just that. Motown magic at its best
There is a 12 inch mix of all their songs. IT IS TOTALLY AWESOME!!!!
I believe it is called Supreme Medley Mix. WHEN YOU LISTEN TO IT YOU WILL HAVE TO GET UP AND DANCE.
This song brings back so many memories from the 70s and summers with my BFF.
Around Motown during the early days, the group was called the No Hit Supremes, because try as they might, they couldn’t get a hit record on them until “Where Did Our Love Go” put them on the map. They ultimately had 12 #1 hit songs. For a more powerhouse record, try “Keep Me Hangin On”.
She has an ethereal voice. Like fluttering fairy wings.
More Supremes for you:
"Reflections"
"You Keep Me Hanging On"
"My World Is Empty Without You"
"I Hear A Symphony"
"Where Did Our Love Go"
"You Can't Hurry Love"
"Come See About Me"
"Back In My Arms Again"
"Love Is Here and Now You're Gone"
You should use live performances of The Supremes so that you can hear the power and harmony that Mary and Flo bring to the songs. The Supremes live are fun and shows why they were the greatest!
So So true 👍👍
Diana Ross is great . I love this song from her Supremes days and also her solo songs I'm Still Waiting and Touch Me in the Morning .
Oh, what glorious music we had back then! We took it for granted at the time, but looking back today, it's pure joy.
Motown introduced so many great entertainers! You might not know they also had white bands. Rare Earth was one of them. They had a string of hits in the late '60s and early to mid '70s. Big Brother, I just want to celebrate, I'm losing you and they took one of the Motown songs, performed by several different artists, and made it psychedelic called Get Ready. That one is about 17 minutes of musical masterpiece! Everybody gets a solo in the song! Wow!
Smooth. Right Jay, that's Diana. Soothing voice. Did you notice the dancers... Hey Jay. You just said it. The 3 girls dancing together. So from the era! See how easy it is to fall in love with them. "Love Child" will be powerful. Maybe not Linda Ronstadt powerful but yeah.
She had a smooth but powerful voice. She made it sound so easy without needing to push her limits!
Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, the original group, were all from the Brewster-Douglass public housing project in Detroit. They formed the Primettes as the sister act to the Primes (with Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks, who went on to form the Temptations). Barbara Martin replaced McGlown in 1960, and the group signed with Motown the following year as The Supremes. Martin left the act in early 1962, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio.
Great reaction choice for female Friday! My suggestion for another Supreme song is Love Child.
Big hugs and love to All you robsquad family smiling faces
"You Keep Me Hanging On" should be your next Supremes song--the first 45 I ever bought with my own money
also check out "Love Is Like an Itching In My Heart" and "Back In My Arms Again"
They're the only ones who could compete on the charts with the Beatles back in that day.
Diana was the first “Diva” of music and her voice is simply devine.
Happy Female Friday!! They made such a great sound!!🤘🔥
So many great songs to choose from! I nominate "You Can't Hurry Love" (probably their most up-tempo song), "Come See About Me", and "Where Did Our Love Go" for your next outing!
Beautiful ladies and equally beautiful voices...Mary Wilson is absolutely gorgeous. Always was.
When the Lovelight Shines Through His Eyes is one of the few power songs I can think of from the top of my head and Butter Popcorn with Florence Ballard in the lead.
Amber you rock these reactions!! You have really got an awesome insight into music. Your descriptions of the sounds are spot on! Love you Girl. ❤😁 (you're ok too, Jay 😂)
awwwww I would sing this to my little ones all the time! 💜💜
LOVE CHILD is a very powerful song . A favourite of mine was Cant Hurry Love, which was later cover by Phil Collins
The Supremes were everything in our house! Thanks so much!! The height of elegance, cool, grace. Love, love, love!
The Supremes were such a talented group. They kept turning out hit after hit - all of them outstanding. You might also want to check out: "Back in my Arms Again", "Come See About Me" and "Nothing But Heartaches." Pure Motown perfection!
Jean Terrell replaced Diana Ross in the 70s. Her vocals are stunning as well. I really like the songs 'Stoned Love' and 'Up The Ladder To The Roof.'
Agree some of their best songs were after Diana left.
The greatest group of female singers ever
Love The Supremes. They have so many good songs 😁
Guys just in case you didn’t know here’s a fact after the Beatles Diana Ross and the Supremes had the most number one hits in the 1960s. A Song You must react to is upside down by Diana Ross in my opinion her best great job guys!
Far from her best
@@Todd170 hence the words in my opinion everybody has their own.
@@williamcalderon9158 understood, but the overwhelming majority don't even come close to ranking that as her best by far.
I am sending this every day till maybe I can get y'all to react to The Pretty Reckless. Some of the best tunes are "25", "Only Love Can Save Me Now", "Death By Rock & Roll", or "Heaven Knows". The female lead singer is Taylor Momsen, former child star Cindy Lou Who. Please check out this band. I know you'll appreciate their music.
I've been trying to get them to listen to pretty reckless for a long time. I was one that got them to listen to halestorm. They both said they love them but never played another song from them
Yes to both groups! Add 'Take Me Down' to The Pretty Reckless songs. 'I Am The Fire' or Love Bites (So Do I)' for Halestorm.
My Childhood my Mother playing The Supremes records and dancing around in the wonderful year of 1964!
Oh man oh man oh man love is awesome
I think you two would enjoy Will you love me tomorrow by The Shirelles
Definitely. They're one of the late 50's-early 60's girl groups who paved the way for the monstrous career of The Supremes.
"Ain't no mountain high enough" is better.
prefer the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell original of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". All Supremes song are great
Kathie says…In the 1960s I LIVED to hear Dick Biondi (WLS A.M. RADIO) play the next SUPREMES hit!!! I Love everything they recorded 🥰. Now, I would LOVE for you to listen to TOWN WITHOUT PITY recorded by GENE PITNEY. THAT song is POWERFUL….it stops my heart and takes my breath away.
They were the most successful group. Next to Beatles. Diana was lead on every song. Listen to her 1981 TV special when she performs home from the wiz. Unbelievable talent. We all loved her.
I love Diana Ross. You should watch her in "The Wiz". She sings a POWERFUL song called "Home" that's simply breathtaking!! You're entire family would like the movie!! Has MJ in it too. Keep smiling!! 🥰😍🥰
Great song! I saw Diana Ross alone in concert. She was amazing. Such a class act.
Ain’t no mountain high enough is a song you really need to listen to. You will hear a stronger voice out of Diana Ross.
Yes, many years ago, I saw her solo n Vegas and she was great. Cool production, too.
These ladfies are a marvelous trio. When I'm here I'm usually smiling.
They were huge in the '60s. Class, glamor, elegance, beauty -- and great songs and voices. A favorite of mine is Love Is Here and Now You're Gone. Also The Happening, Reflections and Love Is Like An Itching In the Heart.
So glad you brought The Supremes back for another reaction, they are definitely Female Friday worthy! So many many great songs. I'd suggest checking out the Supremes Medley 12" mix. It was a HUGE club hit and gives you a nice introduction into their genius.
Love It ❤️

Aretha Franklin - I Say A Little Prayer
Welcome aboard! I was in Jr. High back in 1974 when I fell in love with Diana Ross. My older sister who was in college (Cal. State Northridge) took me to see the movie "Lady Sings The Blues" and I was smitten by Diana's beauty and singing. I learned that Diana was the lead singer of another group (The Supremes) that I also loved listening to during the early '70's.
I saw Mary Wilson ,sing solo at Norwich uni festival,,she arrived by helicopter,,broad day light, and blew the whole place away,,it was incredible ,,👌🎶♥️
You guys talk about the FAM. You have to do WE ARE FAMILY by SISTER SLEDGE. Come on let’s get it!
I agree!! I've suggested this song too!! And Chic, Pointer Sisters, etc. What a great era in music that was!! 🎶💗✨
