This game and especially its sequel are underrated masterpieces that almost nobody mentions. So glad to hear a fair review and some coverage given to these two excellent GB games!
Supposedly, the Runes of Virtue games were Garriott's favorite console Ultima games, and I can see why. Also, I believe how far you go back on death is determined by difficulty level, but I haven't seriously played this in almost 20 years so... Fuzzy me memory and all that.

I bought Runes of Virtue 2 after it came out and found it utterly opaque and not terribly fun.
