Nothing like a bit of small engine repair to keep a young lad out of trouble! Glad the disassembly seems to have straightened it out.
Amazing how simply disassembling, lightly cleaning and reassembling a troublesome machine can sometimes fix it.

Spray and pray works for me.
Did you check the spark while the spark plug was out? I once had a fine crack in the ceramic and could only see it once I tested the plug.
