A note on arrangement, you can actually record to the timeline, you just won’t be able to see it until you transfer the live set to your computer. This was shown on loopop’s video. He also transfers a demo project that has no session clips and just an arrangement timeline onto the push 3 and it plays on the push 3 in standalone mode.
It makes no sense on the device. At that point why even bother having a compromised version of just having a laptop sitting next to you? Seems like a lot of people are obsessed with this idea of working in "hardware" when we are so far beyond that being idea its not even funny.
Nice video. Glad you ordered yours straight away. I waited an extra day to order, and now have to wait another 6 weeks. Thanks again for your impressions of Push 3. I’ll hang on to my Maschine+ for now, but we’ll see.
For me, having a standalone MPE drum machine almost feels like it’s what Roger Linn was working on coming to fruition. Not only that but full MPE synth engines built in, sequencing capabilities etc. It’s not perfect but it feels more like the next step into the future of music instrumentation. I hear people complaining about “where are the beats?” Well, you can do beats on this but you are seriously wasting its potential and capabilities. Is it for everyone? No. Is it perfect? No...but it’s a step in the right direction.
This may be an INCREDIBLY Stupid Question but gonna ask anyway , Non Standalone Push 3 plugged into a snarling BEAST of a Intel NUC or other Mini PC with Ableton set to Autorun, can I use this Headless? IOW No monitor or just turn monitor off and do it all on the Push 3 with the Mini PC or Mac Mini providing the Brain? I know its a Crackpot idea , I don’t really NEED a battery Powered Push but using just the Push 3 to control Ableton without needing to look at monitor or touch Mouse and Keyboard would be NICE! Don’t own a Push 3 to try this, i know my previous Gen Push can’t really do this. Thank you.
I’m not sure how you’d get it to boot into Ableton directly and not have any config issues, but assuming that was all set properly I think that would work. Would give you an audio interface, and access to third party plugins. But many of those would boot without any controls on screen. Not sure it’s worth the hassle vs just using like a MacBook and putting it to the side
@@DylanParisMusic AutoRun at Boot no longer working in Windows and Mac OS? There’s alot of Crackpot ideas in this Melon Head of mine and they aren’t always as good as the Fantasy once tried in real world but think the MPE on Push 3 pretty well makes me getting a Linnstrument a never gonna happen thing.
All the videos I've seen about the Push 3 appear to involve making a four-bar pattern with minimal change in harmony, atop which variations are played. Of course, longer works might mean a video of impractical length, but...is this sort of endlessly repeated four-bar phrase all people do with the Push 3? If there are larger-scale works , I'd be very interested in hearing about them.
A few of my other videos showcase tracks that I made off camera over hours rather than minutes. Your point about impractical video length is essentially the root of most track from scratch videos sounding simple. Additionally my guess is producers who are full time and deep diving and producing may not be the same folks making weekly RUclips videos on top of a full time job, but that’s just speculation on my part
Your you're completely right. No one in their right mind is going to make a full song on this, capture all of the footage and go through editing just to post on the tube. These videos are to show the workflow! I loved your beats btw! Great sonic choices.
I need to retest this, I forgot how to change the input from Line to Instrument and adjust the input gain last time I used a guitar so it sounded bad, but I’m 100 percent positive that was my fault cause I forgot how to get to audio settings until I read the manual after. I will definitely dive more into this, but I think it thrives with Guitar and Bass compared to dynamic mics for vocals, because it can properly supply the right amount of gain, and because there are Amp, Cabinet, Pedal, and more plugins that make electric string instruments thrive.
12:47 yeah that’s one thing @Ableton needs a better arrangement of sounds. It’s to much to go thru. They need some genre tabs or something. I’ve used Ableton since 2012 and never a stock drum kits only pre organized drum packs
you can simply move prefects started on push to your computer over wi-fi - so no stems, but the entire project will show up, instead of recording live into your daw
i think push has always been marketed towards people already using ableton, and push 3 is no exception- you even need a license at purchase of the device. i think for me it’s a big advantage to be able to open the project itself, rather than printed stems. but maybe they add that feature down the line
For sure, and I love Ableton. But I get comments asking to compare this to the Force, MPC, and Maschine Plus all the time and compared to those, this is basically standalone lite if you want to finish tracks and stem out
Glad that once the frustrating part of loading the packs was over that there now seems to be significantly less headaches! Do you know if it’s possible to use send fx in standalone? Also, can you print fx automation in standalone? Like if you messed w/ the feedback of the delay, could you include the resulting chaos as part of the loop/clip?
Ok thanks for info! I'm using 2x Akai Force synced via ableton link for live.. with external hw synths already sampled in.. so far thats the best solution I figured out. It seems to me too much to pay 2,5 k for Push3 with ableton licence instead so it depends a lot on how much powerful Push3 really is, thanks again! ,)
6:09 MPE takes some practice... MPE can be unforgiving and requires skill to use effectively. Thankfully you can tune the "Sensitivity" of the MPE features on these pads to minimize unintended pitch or modulation changes during play.
The modern akai’s are the best in the market atm but push 3 has a better ceiling. No need to sell. I’ll be keeping my mpc live until this thing evolves
@Lo_Bias thanks Dylan...your vids ate articulate and eloquent providing balanced and helpful insight. Even if i wanted to buy p3 there are not available for another 8-10 weeks. Have to say though im finding logic pro on ipad v productive and user friendly though zero remotr midi control atm to trigger live loops which is poor.
Hi Sim! I need to work with both devices more before I could pick one. I will say I find the Push 3 to be more compelling, and to generally just “sound better” in every way. That said, it is limited in some features compared to the Force, and it is MUCH more expensive.
I can’t perfectly remember the knobs on the push 2 as far as how they felt and functioned but the ones on the 3 are great other than I keep accidentally pushing out of menus by hitting left on the primary jogwheel on the right
Press shift and record in session view and it records into arranger (u just can't see a visualisation). Then when you import the project to computer it is in the arrange window
I don’t think you can actually export the stems after you do this, so I’d probably just do this in controller mode so I could see the recording stuff in realtime and mess with the tracks right after, but this is still neat! Hopefully it means future software updates could allow a simple export stems process after doing this.
If you use standalone, do the above ie press shift and record, then trigger your scenes, once finished press save, then you access the push via WiFi on computer (the push section in Ableton when you are on the same WiFi network during standalone) you can open the project from the push tab, press save as to save on your computer then hit collect all and save afterwards and there ya go.
Wonderful, very measured overview. Much appreciated but also not appreciated because now I HAVE TO save up $2K to cop this 😂 Also my guy. That beat at the end??…fire!! So sick. I’m amazed that it’s possible to not only make but arrange all that on a standalone 💯🔥🔥
One thing I don't like is that when we load something the machine turns off all the lights and turns on again as soon as it's loaded. It's very weird. Just as I find this Push 3 very strange. No touch screen and having to manipulate the buttons a lot to access functions. No arrangment view. Honestly, I think this machine is too archaic for today's times. I expected much better from Push 3. Disappointment. I would never give 2000 usd for this thing.
Thank you for keeping it real. Wayyy too many shills out there. I can’t say I wouldn’t exclude a lot of negatives myself if I was getting free gear to demo, but I appreciate your honesty, man!
Thanks man! yeah it’s always tricky with free gear. I think as long as people disclose they get stuff for free it’s okay, but it does potentially change the dynamic of what you focus on. Like, even the same exact problem is gonna hit super different if you pay 2000 vs get something for free. In my opinion it doesn’t negate the free person’s opinion, it’s just an element you have to keep in mind as a viewer. For example, as someone who paid 2000 for the OP-1 Field a few months before this came out, I feel pretty bitter. Someone who got that for free probably doesn’t have that feeling. Their feelings are valid, we’re just in different positions.
@@DylanParisMusic Yea absolutely, man. Surprisingly in the photography/cinematography niche of RUclipsrs, I find it way more honest, excluding the big big names that get sent cameras/equipment. Do you hate the op-1 field? It’s such a cool concept, but I don’t think I’d make anything serious on it.
Basically I think the tape workflow ruins the device for me, 4 tape tracks per project, and no undo. It’s neat for people who like it but it’s a creativity killer for me and it undoes everything else that’s awesome about it
@@DylanParisMusic That’s exactly how I felt about it/the rage I would get trying to create with it. It’s such a cool product, and the form factor alone is just neat. Just hoping and praying NI releases a plus 2 with battery and better processor. Then my GAS will be subdued for a few years lol.

Just got my push 3 last night. Took me about 2 hours to download everything in suite plus all the packs.
So is it possible to completely use ONLY the push as a midi to produce or would it be a good idea to also use a midi piano too?
I hope they make an arrangement view available in standalone eventually

I don't think that works for the screen size. Probably why push 2 never got it.
I used to agree but with the clip view for session mode I think they could pull it off
