Nobody needs to become too nostalgic here. I feel like Japan is so consistent. A lot of the atmosphere in this video can still be felt today. Sure, many things have been modernized. The cars are newer, the karaoke microphone is now wireless and everyone has a smartphone. Many of the old wooden houses are gone. But still - you can experience most of what can be seen in the video today. I love that.

I was a US Army brat living in South Korea in the late 70s and early 80s and we visited Japan a couple times. I remember being amazed by the lights of downtown Tokyo.

My father worked in Japan as an interpreter for over 40 years. He brought us chocolates, toys, sweets and instant noodles everytime he travels back home. I miss those days!

I went to Japan as a 22 year old in march 1979. As an English man from rural Suffolk my six weeks there was a great education and I always have loved the whole place and people. I found a sense of peace and belonging and it has remained on all my other visits and always will.🇬🇧🇯🇵⛩🍣
This is a hidden gem! I've never seen such a high quality video from 30+ years ago. It's interesting seeing Japanese life before their bubble economy collapse, and I feel like in today's world it'll be cool to see this era once again. I feel like add in today's technology and how they are more welcoming to the world, I can see so many people loving 1980s style Japan if it came back. Also I recognized a few scenes from Black Rain.

IMHO 1910s just before WWI were the greatest times of humanity. 80s-90s were close but never reached that early XX century majesty. Since 2001 world is just degrading.

Absolutely poetic! Blade Runner, 1982 portrayed Los Angeles as a futuristic cyberpunk city, but in fact this cyberpunk atmosphere was already a reality in Tokyo. Looking at the city from this perspective makes me feel good, and at the same time frightening.
I was born in 1971. I spent the 80's from low teens to high teens. I was born in Tokyo and raised in Tokyo. There are many places I have never been to in this video. But it makes me feel nostalgic.

Especially after the economic recession around 1990, the speed at which old buildings disappeared accelerated. Japanese people tend to value old things, but in big cities like Tokyo, new things come in and old things disappear.

Was just watching Urusei Yatsura, and realizing that the show takes place in the 80s suddenly popped in my mind while watching this. Those characters if they were real would’ve been apart of this.

Yes even in Japan people were more open with one another, because they hasld to be, due to lack of mobile phones etc distracting them. Plus they had an economical boom, and good work flow, higher birth rates and stronger family connections. 80S = better.

No, I was visiting Japan for work in the 80s. In some ways it blew my mind. I have never felt the same way since - even visiting Japan with my Japanese wife. It was a magical time.

The 80s in Japan incorporates a cumulation of over 20 years of recovery/rebuilding, their economic rebound and global presence on the world stage. They were really pushing their limits. It was only until the mid 90s that the economic bubble popped and they have floated into economic stagnation. Still through, if you travel or lived there you know how convenient and advanced Japan feels. It’s due mainly to a combination of overall cultural respect to one another’s space, privacy and property. PS: The continued use of paper newspapers, writing letters, etc is a cultural formality not a lack of technology or advancement. They choose to do it that way on purpose.

i live there a few years ago and had the same impression. japan seems to have peaked both culturally and construction wise around the mid 80s. the buildings are still big and impressive and the lights in kabukicho are still dazzling but you can see that many places are starting to show their age.

People from overseas deify Japan in the 80s, but there were many problems. School violence and juvenile crime were also major problems in the 80s. City pop music of the 80's was also minor in Japan at that time. It is certain that they were economically well-off.

The problem is that they haven't improved that much since then. Their GDP per capita stays the same or even less. Their streets and subways still look the same. They still use fax, stamp, paper mails and record TV shows. I guess the Japanese miss the old days so much

The 1980s is when technology started to explode and individualism really started to take off. Loneliness also started to become a problem during this time, even though people still socialized a lot without cell phones

Japanese live long...probably most of these people are still around and healthy. I have always loved Japanese culture and people it is awesome to see Japan in the time and place of 1980..they looked so modern even then.
Hate to break it to you. But the with the declining population this is unlikely to happen. Greater chance of a crash with their current business model which relies on a certain way of life and work flow that won't be sustainable for the next 30 years most likely resulting in a crash before 2050

I was born in 1980 in Japan. This was pretty much my early childhood. I noticed there's Takeshi and other comedians here that I am familiar with. They look so damn young back then lol

The problem is that they haven't improved that much since then. Their GDP per capita stays the same or even less. Their streets and subways still look the same. They still use fax, stamp, paper mails and record TV shows. I guess the Japanese miss the old days so much

Imagine these people, 40+ years later, some still alive, that doesn't know at all that humdreads of thousand people are watching them and fantasticating about their life in the 80s...
And maybe they will die not knowing about the 2nd life of this video.

The 1980s is when technology started to explode and individualism really started to take off. Loneliness also started to become a problem during this time, even though people still socialized a lot without cell phones

Japanese live long...probably most of these people are still around and healthy. I have always loved Japanese culture and people it is awesome to see Japan in the time and place of 1980..they looked so modern even then.
Japan just posted a 12% Q1 economic growth, something not seen since the 80s. Let’s hope this is the beginning of the reawakening of their economy.
Hate to break it to you. But the with the declining population this is unlikely to happen. Greater chance of a crash with their current business model which relies on a certain way of life and work flow that won't be sustainable for the next 30 years most likely resulting in a crash before 2050
