I lived in Japan from 1979 to 1991, working for a now-defunct electronics company. I worked as an English translator for sales to North and South America. I just turned 68 years old this January. It was the best times of my life and I would give up everything to go back to that period.
Many Japanese who lived through that era share your sentiments.
I came in 89 and still here. A lot has changed, but nothing like how things have changed in the states. I'm not sure exactly whether Japan changed or I did, but it seems to have gotten older and it feels like the party is over. Somebody removed all the beer machines, the karaoke bars with drunken salarymen are mostly replaced with karaoke boxes. Hell, the big cities are almost completely non-smoking sections, and the red light districts (in the small cities) are ghost towns.
@@TheShrededward I ve cycle toured through western Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku and there are so many ghosts of the 70s and the 80s Bubble Era in the shape of abandoned love motels and clubs out there. I even passed through an entire small city in Shikoku that had a very 1970s Japan vibe about it.
@@capmidnite Yes, there is still plenty of what it was like around, but as you say, the love hotels are abandoned. I live in a small village in Nagano, and everything kinda looks like it always has, except it isn't. If I wanted to go to the local bar, I know what it's going to be like. A couple old men drinking sake in a bar that used to have 20 + people every night. It's exactly the same as it was, except that it's now a ghost bar.
What made it so great if I may ask?
This make me miss a time and place where I wasn't even born.

Watching this older videos, not just from Japan, I can't shake this feeling like we've lost something as human beings collectively. Something basic, something important.

Birds act like birds. They have rituals and behaviors that haven’t changed much. They instinctively build nests and have mating rituals. Humans were the same. But now, for a variety a reasons, a lot of humans don’t know how human. The world changes too rapidly (technology /internet). And the “elders” can’t teach us because they grew up in a different world. (They’re actually screwing things up, but that’s another story)
I landed in Japan in 1981 @ Yokota Air Base as a 18 year old Airman in the USAF. I left in 1987 but those were the best years of my life looking back. One of my favorite things to do was either get on my motorcycle and just drive or get on the train and just ride somewhere and get off at some random station. It was always fun and a great way to learn the language.

I am Japanese. Today's Japan is wonderful, but old Japan had a warmth and a human touch, and I wanted to be born in that era.
I wish I could’ve experienced it back then. I’m not from Japan but soooo long to visit, or even live there someday for a while if possible, but I have a feeling that it might’ve been nicer to live there in that era than this one. It looks like it was one that was excited to be more open and full of hope with a more ‘real’ mix of old and new. Rather than the scraps and the artificial that seem to litter the populated areas now.😔 I don’t know what to do. I live in Britain, where we are always still surrounded by the ghosts of our ppast Good and bad, An although thing have steadily changed over the decades and years many of us feel, in many ways have also gotten worse and we don’t have the strength to fight it (like we are truly loosing the last bits of who we are), and I don’t know whether me moving to Japan or another country in Asia might just be me exchanging one place for another and come across the same problem. I guess a lot of us are in the same boat then.
I agree every where this feel of community is getting pushed away. I find it nostalgic to be familiar with almost everyone you meet while walking

I am from the USA and went to the University in Japan and lived in Japan in the 1980's. All the wonderful things that you might hear or see about Japan in the 1980's was true. It was a magical place at a magical time. Everything seemed possible. Everybody was prospering. Almost every crazy business idea seemed to succeed. People were happy and shared their happiness and good fortune with others. It was like no other place on earth.
why do you think Japan has changed so much?
@@LucasHenriqueCarneiro Actually, I don't think Japan has changed much since the economic bubble popped in 1992, except for the attitude of the people. Japan is a good economic study. After the economy crashed, Japan experienced DEFLATION. Deflation was mostly academic theory before it actually happened in Japan. Now, when you travel Japan, it looks kind of tired and old. You don't see much new development. Buildings and infrastructure are left-over from the 1980's boom mostly. We hear about the aging of the Japanese population, but you can see it for real when you go to Japan. There are so many very old people milling about going nowhere, doing nothing. Then you see the "younger" generation which is now in their sixties or maybe fifties. You don't see a lot of young people from, say five years old to thirty years old in Japan like you do in other countries.

I was lucky enough to visit Japan as a young boy at age 11 on a Suzuki violin summer trip. While my older brother and his best friend were in violin classes I would walk around the local areas we stayed in, exploring little alleys, shops and local malls. Not sure if it’s just Nostalgia but these memories are possibly my favorite ever!! It was so so great! I just loved every part of this time. The toys were awesome, the food and people, and vibe was so cool. I fell in love with Ninjas and Samurais before they became pop culture cool! Those 3 weeks contain some of my richest feelings and memories from an era I miss so much! I love the feelings I have from that time in my life and yes if I could ever go back in time it might be this time and place for me!! Thank you Japan for a time so special and wonderful as that! And thank you to my beloved grandfather who helped me be able to be on such a amazing life changing trip!

My condolences, Japan was and is a truly beautiful country. I plan to visit it this year. My father often spoke of the places he lived in when he was younger in the USA and as an adult I love going to those places and trying to view the world from my dads eyes I makes me feel closer to him. If you can try doing the same and just feel your mom being next to you as you retrace her steps.

80年代になるとコンプライアンスって言うモノが少しずつ再定義されていって少しずつ世の中の締め付けが厳しくなった頃です。
それでも今思えばおおらかな時代でしたけれど。
80年代後半にはレトロ文化って言うかな、昔の漫画とかを全集で発売したりするようにもなった時期です。
温故知新、今この世に80年代から得られるモノがあるとしたら、「新しいことを何年かかってもやってみよう」という萌芽の試みですかね、今日常化している機器の原型になるモノの殆どは80年代に芽吹いていますから。
これはどの時代にも言えることですが。

The ‘80’s was the Golden era for Japan. More than just an economic boom, the sense of optimism, the power of the yen - all came crashing down in the early ‘90’s. IMO, Japan had more of an identity back then.

For anyone that doesn't know, the 80's were probably the peak of modern Japan. After the economic bubble burst in 1992, development stagnated and hasn't really picked up since. A lot of places in Japan, especially once you leave the big cities, still looks like this except dilapidated, neglected, and often abandoned and empty. As a young Japanese, I would kill to live in a time like this and it makes me sad that I'll never experience it.

From my perspective (from small European country) Japan is still one of the best places in the world. You still have a strong economy. But I could be wrong. What is life like for an average Japanese citizen? Do you make enough to have a good life and to be able to afford everything thats not over the top?
People there look so chill, maybe it's just an outsider's perspective but I fell like japanese people are the best, and something about the cities architecturally gives me such a chill vibe, I don't know how it is to actually live there, but sure looks like a really nice place. Maybe one day I'll get to learn the language and actually go live there.
Same thing happened in Japan that happened in America and many other top economies. Labor and manufacturing was outsourced to sweatshops in China and other parts of Asia. It killed millions of jobs, killed so many local private businesses and the towns and communities that revolved around them.

I am from India, but feel like Japan has been there with me my whole life. From Kurosawa's movies to mangas/animes and videogames which captured my imagination and helped me go through some really dark times. I grew up with Japanese culture without even realizing it. The best I can do is go there one day and expreience Japan's beauty in all it's glory. No other country is as close to my heart as this one. A truly magical place.
You may have been a Japanese poet (Matsuo Basho), Samurai, or advisor (Sen No Rikkyu) in a past life. Japan is indeed a mystical place that invokes nostalgic emotions.
I'm a Japanese guy (grew up in the era in the video) with fondness for and access to plenty of Indian music, food, and film! I like it a lot!

Music, aesthetic, anime, everything. 80s Japanese pop culture is unmatched even till now, they were unique, creative, and fluid.

But, i aggree about weird/strange/grotesque art they create and weebs popularized that "weirdness". 1980s era its not only weird in japan but in anywhere in the world prob usa as well, 80s considered as freaky, unique, strange era of movie ex: the thing, back to the future, but thats what make them memorable.

Yeah Japanese popular culture had a large influence in Hong Kong and Causeway Bay was filled with Japanese department stores like Sogo, Daimaru, Matsuzakaya, Isetan... ,etc.

I lived in Japan for 8 years from 2006. Loved it. Japan has a culture that gets into your soul- consideration, best customer service, cleanliness, and dedication to overall quality. No other culture is like it. Many could learn from aspects of Japanese culture.
my wife lived in osaka in the 80's and i've asked her about it a few times over the years and she said it was a crazy time. Everyone was getting rich but working hard. Her father became a millionaire and built an apartment building.

My dad went to Osaka on a business trip in the mid 80’s he said it was the most interesting place. Got mom some perfume, and a beautiful music box. He was the tallest guy around haha. These days I know Japanese are taller. He got someone to translate my name in Japanese.

The 80’s was Japan’s golden age. I was a fascinated by Japan in those days, as Japanese television dramas and such were popular when I was growing up in the LA area. I would never have believed then that I would one day move to Japan, yet here I am, and here I have been for quite a few years now. Many of the places seen in the video are exactly the same today.
So fortunate for us to be in Tokyo from 1980-1984. Best memories of places and Friends.

I live in Japan and not much has changed tbh apart from Shibuya and Harajuku having more modern vibe, other than that Japan has kept its tradition fairly well.
That's cool to know, a lot of places in other countries seem to get completely demolished sometimes, and it looks completely different.

I came to Japan in 1982 and I'm still here. Watching this footage, it strikes that even though many things have changed (hairstyles, clothes, cars) most of what I remember from life in Japan from more than 40 years ago is still here, especially if you visit older parts of town. We lived in Nakano for four years in the late 80s/early 90s, and not a lot has changed. A few restaurants are gone, mainly because the owner got too old and his kids didn't feel like doing the hard work and the long hours in the restaurant business, and a few have been added, but the main look and feel of the streets hasn't really changed in a location like Nakano.

I’m a Japanese born in 1982 and something ironic is our generation suffered a lot after we became adults for lack of jobs, and I barely remember how good it was to live in the 80s.
@@Cliffem82 It was the same in the USA. I grew up a very poor kid in the late 1970's into the 80's and most of life seemed very hard to me too. Even with all the economic problems though, I still see that period's good points too especially for movies and TV. TV was my escape from the problems of daily life.
@@perdomot I think what you're talking about is connected but a little different, in that one if you is taking about growing up poor in spite of the prosperity, around you and the other is talking about having just been too young to enjoy said advantages. It's like the difference between an impoverished boomer and a middle class Xer. It's not quite the same, but really any line we could draw between different human experience is superficial
@@Cliffem82 Japanese economy went downhill after the financial crash in 1987. It was never the same after that. Those were the days of the popular Sony walkman, Canon cameras, NEC computers.

それは時代がよかったのではなくて、当時の自分自身が若くて、いろんな可能性を秘めていたからです。
きっと当時の大人たちも60年代を思い出して「あの日に帰りたい」と思っていたはずです。
I spent most of my teen years in Japan at this time, almost every other weekend spent in Tokyo just wandering about. Lot's of walking around and seeing the sights. I was 13 - 17 from 81 - 85, graduating HS in 85. Then I joined the USAF from WA state, and spend 88 - 91 in Fussa at Yokota AB. Loved this time period...

I was stationed at Yokota AB twice. 75 - 79, 81 - 85. After I retired from the Air Force I went back as a civilian working for Soft Bank 97 - 2000 and 2004 -2007. Love Japan and it's people. Plan on going back this Fall. America sucks now.
Did you learn the language?
I only have one tattoo. It says "Fussa". Really changed my life living there.
Both music and video are so beautiful and peaceful. Beyond the economic boom, the 80s in Japan were a really special epoch.
Went to Kagoshima in 83/84, amazing, lovely people, mind blowing.

In this second part of the video, we can see footage from Juzo Itami's 1985 film "Tampopo," a ramen western, which was also used in the first part of the video, as well as footage from Coca-Cola's commercials from the 1980s ( A search for "I feel coke" will give you some candidates, but they are a must-see as they reflect the state of Japanese society at the time! ). These are the only information available to me at this time. The other images may or may not be from some of the films used in the first part 🎥

My father was lucky enough to travel from Pakistan to Japan during the late 80's and from all of the stories he's told me about his experience in Japan, and all of the cool photos he's taken, it makes me wish I could witness what it was like living in such an awesome era! :,)

意外に見落とされがちなんですけど、ロケーションを多用した映画って洋邦問わずその時代のタイムカプセルなんですよね。俳優は演技していますが、そこに映っているのは紛れもない当時の人々・風景・風俗。その時代にしかないものを見せる貴重な民俗資料でもあるんですよね。しかも撮っているのがプロの撮影技師（監督）なので、画のクオリティは言うまでもありません。素晴らしい動画編集、ありがとうございます。
第二次世界大戦で焼け野原に焼き尽くされた東京が、わずか35年ほどでこの景色になったのは本当日本人の力強さ、底力を感じます。もっと日本人は自信を持っていいと思いました。

I was born in 1983, and till this day the sounds and colors of the 80s just felt very soothing and uplifting to me. My generation experience the paradigm shift toward the digital age and sadly i missed the simpler time like many of you. Cheers to all the old souls, and may the future bless us with hope and peace to all.

People weren't obsessed with technology, weren't sensitive, weren't always bitching about freedom and rights etc. It's a period where free time are spent mostly outdoors instead of locking yourself at home facing something digital i guess. You know, where life truly happens.

Greetings from China. The 80s and 90s of Japan was a dream to me in my childhood. Japan's films were first introduced into China in the 80s. Famous actors/actress and songs remind me of that heavenly era, even today. Thank you for this lovely memory.

i spent alot of time in japan a few years ago and once you get outside the big cities you can see parts of japan where it feels like development stopped in the 70s or 80s. im too young to have been their during the big boom of the 80s but im sure it was magical time.
Man just knowing that these people are from decades ago,just living life day by day leaves a certain emptiness in my heart and i don't know why...
That night time in the city just looks absolutely gorgeous.

After watching this video I can say Japan is still an exciting and vibrant place to be. My wife and I went there in 2018 for 2 weeks. Lovely country. We went to Kenjinamiku, Mt. Fuji because there's a hotel there with a great view of the mountain, and Tsuginamiku where the art studio is and saw the sword shrine of Oda Nobunaga where you can get pictures taken for free in the samurai armor. We went in early spring just when the cherry blossoms were blooming and saw a Miyako-Odori play even. And the green tea ice cream. You don't know what hits you when you take a lick. And I got to taste real ramen! Got to visit the bread stores. And walking to those vending machines where you can get the hot coffee and drinks right out of the machines was a surprise. AND just like in anime or what you might see on NPR the trains were all full and you were asked to wear any book bags on your front. And if elders came on the train, they didn't demand seats but it was polite to let them have your seat if you could. Just the energy of the place. And before the sega building closed I got pictures of the place in Akihabara with a pen pal of mine named Jiro. He showed us how the buildings have many stores in them with an electronic store and toy store on the top floors and the Walmarts on the bottom. All the places like that were also connected to train stations. It was like walking in a "Dragon Quest" game. L2, L3, L4, and dissonant music playing in the speakers. D: One nasty thing we saw, however was the bottom of the subway routes at the sub levels. They had those floor toilets, and they were filthy. >.< One last thing Toei animation :D It was a lovely vacation, and if I had to say, the exterior of the country, what you see outside, has not changed much. People are quite traditional, folks walk around in the kimono's and the yukata's. The streets are very clean. And the lights stay on at night like you wouldn't believe. And it was safe. We walked around the area with the famous street in akihabara at night, and we got around without hassle. And if you go to temples or graveyards, you really have to show the most courtesy and respect as the people are REVERENT out at holy places. Most of the people we were with were super nice to us.

And yeah bro I grew up in the 90s I was a little boy and it's nothing like Japanese video games like PlayStation in all that stuff it made most of these people hella famous like the guy who made Final Fantasy they made them Legends I'm so obsessed with Japanese culture just because of those video games I grew up with and Nostalgia of the anime I grew up with and even movies. Once you go Japan you never go back. 😆🤪
