    This is easily the best Auto channel out there! Only found this channel a week ago. Why did I not find this earlier!? As an engineer, I love seeing the technical side of the review which is so hard to find in auto reviews! This is way better than Doug Demuro or Redline or Shmee! (these channels are for kids, who don't understand the technical aspects) Keep up the great work.

      This car fucks! Have had a 2020 xdrive 30i for about 6 months now, only complaint is that it is a little slow off the line. Sometimes has me wishing for the m40i, but got a great deal for a loaner on the smaller engine
      Edit: I NEED MORE MONEY! STAT!

    I love BMW looks, in and out. Some years ago I wanted to buy a used one. I found a 5-series so beautifully maintained despite its 100K miles, it looked like new, in every detail. Turns out its owner was a BMW master mechanic. He asked me, "Are you good with maintaining BMWs?", I said, "No". He asked, "Do you have a good friend who is a BMW mechanic?", I said, "No". He said, "Get an Accord".

      It's not that complicated... It's also not unreliable. I have 2 e90s for 4 years (now at 130k) and an f30, and all of them operate incredibly well and have never left me stranded once. A few parts to fix here and there like any car, but no catastrophic failures of any kind, and nothing I haven't done myself. I'm assuming you're someone who just doesn't or has never turned their own wrenches for any of their cars? 🤔 What I'm saying is if you have done it with and four other cars you can do it till BMW.

    • @mountainhobo
      @mountainhobo 6 лет назад +26

      "I'm assuming you're someone who just doesn't or has never turned their own wrenches" - I spent much of my childhood assisting my dad who considered horizontal position under his cars and diving under the hood to be prime time entertainment. I have a life now, more work than I care for, and playing an amateur grease monkey is not the pastime I look forward to. So far my cars have not required it (mostly Fords and Toyotas). I intend to keep it that way.

    • @thedevincrutcher
      @thedevincrutcher 6 лет назад +8

      I did, too. But then I opened the hood of my boyfriend's Mini cooper. Yikes! It took us 4 days of searching and getting frustrated and coming back to look again the next day to find the cabin air filter and then we found out we bought the wrong one. I wish it were as easy to work on as a Toyota or Ford.

      mountainhobo well I bought a lovely 100k mile E91 320D Touring and it’s been so reliable for the 19k miles I’ve had it. If that car needed pro level maintenance he’d done something untoward or knew of a fault.

    • @TheNondiscriminatory
      @TheNondiscriminatory 6 лет назад +6

      mountainhobo they "don't require it?" All cars require regular maintenance. Those cars maybe a little less so- but of course, you're getting a lot less car with a Toyota or Ford, so what do you expect. 🤗

    Excellent Review. Having owned several modern BMWs with iDrive it does a good job of presenting the often used functions in an easily accessible way YET lets you configure / adjust in a granular way. If you were an owner of the X3, you would probably choose not to enable the HUD initially and never need to re-enable it. Modern cars let you set them up to your needs and in many cases tie the setting to your fob so they are memorized. Welcome to the modern age - more choices are a good thing.
    It's really inspiring to see you refine your talent over time in storyboarding your videos, the choice of music selections, and the layers of editing you use to create your 'story' and present your message. It never goes unnoticed and is very much appreciated.
    Your audio and camera quality has really gotten good - you have removed the sense of a 'camera and microphone' and have upped your game and I will show my appreciation on your Patreon site in April. All the best....

    I've been seeing reviews for a while. Different "journalists" dedicated exclusively to test cars and give a verdict that let the consumer know if he would be making a good or a bad purchase. But I think you take it to another level. I appreciate the dedication you put into this.

    By a street mile ... this video is the best piece of information sharing about the BMW X3 on RUclips. The depth of both criticism and praise for different elements of the entire process is good and accentuates the way in which it was executed. It shows a deep level of knowledge and know-how, and reasons for doing things in engineering terms. It shows a gracious approach to the brand marque and is neither cynical nor over the top. I immediately related to quite a few comments made, and especially about the high-tech infotainment system ... but luckily for me, even though I'm retirement age I am an engineer with experience in computers/iphones and digital general, so I guess for me easier to absorb. But the comments are very accurate about everything, especially the digital systems. I chased around looking for a good video, as I intended to look to buy an X3 ... and buy one I did, mostly after much thought and several sessions on this video. Thank you for being "structural" and unsympathetic in your video, but at the same time ... telling it as it is, unlike some of the other supergloss trade videos and car magazine efforts. I bought a 2019 BMW X3 M40D and have to say, yes there's an awefull lot to go wrong ... but at the moment it's an awesome SUV and simply love it ... after learning how to fly it.

    Thanks so much for such a balanced review of the BMW X3. I owned a 2012 version of the X3 and really enjoyed it. I understand your comments about the iDrive, but honestly once you live with the vehicle for a month, you get to understand the logic of the menus and it gets easier. On BMW's website there are short videos about all the different features of the car and how to make adjustments. My advice is to embrace the technology and use it. BMW puts a lot of really thoughtful features in their cars that never make it on reviews of them. A simple, but nice feature is Triple Flash (I think that's what they call it). You tap the blinkers once and they flash three times. Nice feature when you're changing lanes.
    Anyway this is getting long. Thanks again for the fair review.

    Love that you included the packages on the car. I was thinking to myself a little while back, nobody ever says what packages are on the car. You see a car review, and the reviewers say "Oh, this feature and this feature are great!" Then, when you go to the showroom or the spec sheet, you figure out you need to option everything out to unlock those features.

      @JBrumley32771 6 лет назад

      Tyler Hand, I agree. I had an 2012 X3, and I could use iDrive easily after I got over being intimidated. He never went into what's on those menus. There's a lot of thoughtful tech there like being able to set the AC to come on at a set time to cool the car on a hot summer day. Another is being able to map your route the night before on your computer and send it to the nav system to use the next day.

  • @richx9035
    @richx9035 6 лет назад +16

    What an excellent review. This is the way to review a car. Test it over a good length of time rather than doing those ridiculously short car maker sponsored drives. Having had my X3 30i for about 2 months I agree with most of the observations. I would disagree with his impressions of the technology being overbearing. It really is very intuitive, but perhaps if you had no tech experience it might be a challenge. That being said if you get a BMW genius to set things up you could drive without changing settings at all. The 2 litre engine is incredibly responsive and more than adequate for any conceivable driving situation. Handles cornering and twisty roads with great stability and certainty (definitely worth getting the adaptive dampers, variable steering and M brakes). Love the quietness of the cabin and really comfortable on longer trips. My petrol consumption on highway driving is about 7.5 Litres per 100km, combined about 9 litres per 100km and city about 10.5 per 100km.

    these cars are so fast for an SUV you don't even realize how fast you are going without looking at the speedometer. The older models that i've driven are easily the most enjoyable drive for an SUV. i don't like the user interface for the technology and have had problems with every bluetooth system in a BMW ever, but that's not exclusive to this model. Think overall this is the premium when it comes to SUV's and i'd actually rather have one of these than a Range or Land Rover.

    I had the pleasure of owning an new 2012 x3. It was very basic. It just had leather , navigation and the sunroof. One of the best driving automobiles I have owned.
    I had the pleasure of owning the N/a strait six. Quiet and torquey. Reasonable power down low with very good throttle response. At 5000 rpm to the redline it would go bananas. With wonderful induction noises. Then the Perfact shift at 7000 rpm. I got over 30 mpg at 75 mph and gas mileage never dropped below 23.5 mpg over the time I owned it. I know the t4 makes more power......but it is a doorstop compared to the strait six.
    On one damp day I entered an exit ramp way too fast. To make matters worst it was an down hill decreasing radius turn. The x3 nosed in and steeped the tail out. She drifted for what seemed like half a minute ( more like 2 or 3 seconds). I powered out of the turn and straitened up. No drama at all.
    On all season tiers. With the stability control on. Back then the steering was horrible. Drive by remote. As the tiers loaded up you would regain road feel through the suspension. At 6.5 feet tall I could get comfortable in any seat the X3 had. I loved that SUV. Mine had zero problems and Bmw took care of the scheduled maintenance. I moved on after 2 years 12,000 miles.

      I purchased it. It was a demo car all white white leather interior black carpet. Not a fan of white. It was a beautiful car. I purchased it for 36k with 6000 miles on it. We only drove it on long trips and weekends. Two years later in only had 12k on it. I took it in for an oil change and the BMW dealer offered me 31k. I am pretty positive they already had an buyer for it.

You cover all the important features of the vehicle, you are not reticent to criticize something you think could be better. I appreciate you pointing out the various mechanical bits and the enhancements when the vehicle is on the hoist. You close with your final thoughts which provides a useful summary for the viewer. Plus, you have a great sense of humour and trigger a smile and laugh now and then. Great job! I look forward to your next review.

    Thanks Goose! Once again, a tremendous review. As someone who has leased since 2005, I will consider leasing an X3. However, I shudder when think about the long term maintenance costs of the incredibly complex vehicles we are presented with today.

    Serious thought. A coworker of mine bought a plug-in hybrid. When driving, they were informed, when driving up steep hills, they can switch into a "sport mode" that kicks on the gas engine for additional power. On a conventional car, the engine is normally running and warmed up by the time they ask for additional output. The Question: are there any ramifications to these plug-in hybrids that call upon their gas engines to work hard right off the bat without ever being warmed up via low stress use? Sorry, I know its not specifically relevent to the exact car in this video.

    Thank you for that amazing, NO BS, straightforward, to the point and in-depth critical review. You are possibly the first video I've seen that shot underneath the car - a place no reviewer goes or talks about. To talk about it is one thing but to take the camera there and show what is being talked about is another. So thank you! Please do a similar review if you haven't yet on the BMW X3 M40i - would love to know what you think about the M version of this SUV. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.

    Haha, gotta love the differences in the car specs all around the world, I am in the UK and will get my X3 M Sport next month, I am stunned by the differences most notably (perhaps even obvious difference) is the boot (trunk for some), the boot floor and load lip are totally level on UK cars but then we don't have a spare wheel just run flat tyres. The lack of a spare gives extra storage and a dedicated place to put the boot cover, very useful. Nice review and an interesting take on what is good and bad in the car, us brits think the car is huge with masses and masses of space in it.

      Spare tire is an option in the US. By default you don't get it.

    We went with an X5 because the X3 does technically have more trunk space but they sacrifice space in the main cab to make that happen, which mirrors your thoughts on the room to get into the rear seat. It's a much better people-hauler while the X5 imo is more for the couple or small family that just wants a little more room.

    +100 on mentioning the fragility of those collision sensors and modules in the front bumper. I was driving my 645ix very slowly forward and managed to drive over a very low curb. When I pulled away the bumper came loose from the undercarriage a bit. Body shop told me NO damage to the undercarriage, headlights or anything else; just the bumper and some trim pieces. It took over a month and $11,000 for repairs because my the collision sensing modules had to be replaced and aligned and the shop had no idea how to do it, car had to go back to BMW to have a sensor replaced and the whole system realigned. It was a nightmare.
