Controllers also fly jump seat. They aren't checking on pilots or flight attendants.

How do you pop your ears on a plane
There's 2 methods. The first is called the valsalva method, which is the plug your nose and blow out, and the second requires some help from your fellow FA! Two coffee cups, two paper towels, galley towels, non used business class hot towels, you wet them with hot water and ring out, place them at the bottom of the cup and place the cups over your ears... you look silly, but the warm pressure in the cup helps the depressurization of the cabin on decent.
