      In sailing, we do a better version. I was taught to do this rolling hitch a bit differently... the wraps go higher and higher, not downwards. And on nylon or other slippery rope, I'd do many wraps. Then you can use this hitch for huge loads, not just your rainfly.

    • @ambidex
      @ambidex Год назад +8

      rolling hitch (edit: awning hitch) has to cross over itself so that you can finish tying it under load, whereas the knot in the video is nearly impossible to tie under load. it's kind of the worst version of this kind of knot, I wish the Scouts program that has pushed tautline for decades would have used mid-shipman's hitch which is the knot people are referring to above where you go higher and higher. And the early scout books used to teach mid-shipman's but called it tautline, before being revised at some point.

    Also called the rolling hitch. One of the most useful knots i know, use it all the time like magic. But your final loop should go over the T line and wrapped in the opposite direction this keeps the double loop for the friction not in the right line for pressure. The way your trying it will cause it to loosen under vibration like high winds or while highway driving, like I said I've used this knot alot, including tying it incorrectly there for a bit.

    • @randallkornholio2971
      @randallkornholio2971 2 года назад +8

      I've tied it both ways but the way tied in the video is technically correct for what is called the taught line hitch and i have used it to hold my slack line tightly when securing my kayaks to the roof of my car and it doesn't loosen when going down the road, that being said it's not the best knot for holding loads. You can also give it additional half hitches at the end to make the knot more secure, the adjustable grip hitch is more secure as well but tying the taught line hitch with the last half hitch in the opposite direction is admittedly very similar to the prusik with one less wrap so it stands to reason it would also be a secure knot. However if you want a secure knot for loads the best is definitely the truckers hitch.

    I realized recently, its simply a version of the clovehitch, which they all seem to learn without issue, and is a progression from a simple half hitch.
    It goes from Half Hitch to Two Half Hitches, to Clove Hitch, to Rolling Hitch, finally to Taut Line Hitch. Its a Clove Hitch, but an Extra Turn is done before you Cross Over.

    My favorite and still most used knot. I don't even do Scouts or camping anymore and I still use this one for temp lines, clothes lines, etc. Once used it to strap a 17ft canoe to the roof of the ole 'burban and drove 11 hours with no slack when we got where we were goin'!

    I practiced this knot many times until i memorized it after I first watched this video. I carry a bit of parachord on me at all times and just yesterday had a real need to use it. Used this knot to hold a spring force closing gate open while making a grocery delivery to an apartment complex. Thank you.

    Why do you change the way the second half hitch spirals around the standing part on the outside of the loop? Doing this provides less friction, and it's not the way to tie a taut-line hitch (a rolling hitch applied around the standing part). With so many comments, I'm surprised that none I've read seem to catch this. Click here to view a clear explanation: ruclips.net/video/H4rbBHp1QXo/видео.html

      You have to put them in on a 45 degree angle with the bottom toward your tent and top away from it.
      Only the head will be above ground and there is a small hook that you can bight your line on.
      Hope that helps!

    I was taught this as a kid (my Dad) and relearned fresh out of college. I don't remember exactly how my Dad did it because he showed me only once, after that I only saw him play with line and lure and it was done like the one-time explanation was all I needed to last me a lifetime. My friend taught it with 5 to 7 wraps before the final splice and called it a fisherman's knot. To this day, I don't know who was less competent or who had the least amount of teaching skill, or the misinformation taught to them. Thank you for your clarification and now I must run- try it and play with it 50 times so it is engraved in my mind. It's amazing how the disinformation gets passed along, I already forgot the name of the knot...

    I love knots, and I use them with alot of my hanging wood crafts I made for around the house. I'm always looking for new knots to use to make something look even better. I use either 3 twined thin rope, or the big heavy ropes. I've just learned how to make a "Tweenie knot". Makes a big ball, if you use thick rope. Okay, so it's not for camping, but it's a pretty freakin cool knot. LOL!

    I usually do this the other way. One below two above. Either way, this is *The* official Tarpologist’s Knot.
    You can put your tarp up all
    By yourself. Tie all four loose, tarp on ground, come back and tighten to taste and ideal shape.

    Sailors have always called this a rolling hitch. It is at it's strongest if the taut line is a slightly larger diameter.

    If you loop the line of the last wrap back out and lock a piece of stick through that loop instead of tying it down like shown, you'll have a much easier time releasing the knot later.

    WRONG! The final crossover goes over the two loops just like you did, BUT when you wrap it OVER AND around the other side the end of your rope is to be exiting out the SAME direction your other end is going in. So both "ends" are side by side STRENGTHENING the knot. Yours goes into the knot one direction and exits on the opposite side. This is incorrect. ...And BTW, this is called a, "Taught Line Hitch". EDIT: Coincidentally, almost every video on RUclips ALSO ties it incorrectly.
