You know what I thought Star Wars Chess was going to be like? That game Chewbacca played against the droids in the original film. "He made a fair move. Screaming about it can't help you." "Let him have it. It's not wise to upset a Wookie." "But, sir...nobody worries about upsetting a droid." "That's 'cause a droid doesn't pull people's arms out of their sockets when they lose. Wookies are known to do that." "I see your point, sir. I suggest a new strategy, R2. Let the Wookie win."
This could have easily been a throw-away attempt at a cash-in, but Star Wars Chess doesn't compromise the core chess game at all, despite the heavy focus on the glitzy sci-fi trappings.
Are we gonna talk about how in this game Yoda forces a Stormtrooper to blow his own head off and the red smoke looks so much like blood? Or how Yoda sets Boba Fett on fire? I thought Jedi were meant to be merciful.
I love how, when they introduce the queens at the start, Darth Vader's walk is a little bit camp. I can't help but feel some of the character choices were a bit off though. While on the surface, Luke and Leia may be an appropriate choice for king and queen, their characters don't suit the roles. Leia wasn't really portrayed as a formidable foe in the movies. Yoda would fit the king role better as he's old and not very mobile but still formidable. Luke would suit the queen role better as he's the biggest threat to the Empire. Rooks are typically portrayed as tanks, so Chewie is the natural choice. When I think of a bishop in the context of service to a king and queen, I think of an advisory role, so C-3PO probably fills this role best. Han would be a great choice for a knight in my opinion. As for pawns, I think the Ewoks fit the role nicely as they rely on numbers to pose a threat. I suppose you could substitute them for R2 if his absence is a deal breaker for you. As for the Dark Side, I think they probably have it right for king and queen. I would have Boba Fett as a knight to oppose Han, the Rancor as a rook, Grand Moff Tarkin as bishop and the storm troopers can stay as they are.
This my version Rebel Alliance Pawns: Rebel troopers. Rooks: X-wings Knights: Han Solo and Chewbacca Bishops: C-3P0 and R2-D2 Queen: Luke Skywalker King: Leia (she was more of a commander role for the Rebels, while Luke was more of a champion) Empire Pawns: Stormtroopers Rooks: AT-ATs Knights: Boba Fett and Bossk Bishops: Grand Moff Tarkin and Grand Admiral Thrawn Queen: Darth Vader King: Emperor Palpatine
Whatever happened to that cool hologram chess from Star Wars IV A New Hope ? We're already in the year 2021 ? What will it take to make that possible ?
Heh. The Software Toolworks really wanted you to know who made this game, didn't they? Making their part of the title like 50% bigger than the "Star Wars Chess" part.
