I do have better and more useful insight into removing the airbag and horn assembly. Cut the screwdriver head off. Then, go back and notch a "V" groove in the end that you just cut the head or point of the screwdriver off. This will allow you to actually grab and secure the "spring wire" that is securing the airbag assembly to the steering wheel. You need to press in at least a half inch if not more on the spring wire to get it past the "protrusion" that secures the airbag assembly to the steering wheel. A flat, blunt end, while eventually effective, is frustratingly imprecise in pushing the spring wire in towards the center of the steering wheel and beyond the "protrusions" that secures the airbag assembly to the steering wheel. You need to press in much harder than conveyed. The other interesting point, nobody goes back and mentions, is the housing where you insert a mechanism or device is rubber. you can easily force a much larger diameter tool through the opening, within reason, than a 1/8-inch diameter as mentioned. It is not as easy as conveyed and frankly every internet instruction is lacking in real detail. So, if you press in on the spring, and it does not release, but only kinda' of allows the cover and airbag assembly to move a couple of millimeters forward, you need to press in on the spring much harder for greater compression towards the center of the steering wheel.

You can also remove 2 Phillips head screws from the bottom back of the wheel itself (not the center portion) and pop off the back of the spokes where it says "since 1941"
From there just turn the wheel upside down, or look from under it, and get your tabs that way. No guessing or feeling. You'll have a visual path

Funny I just did this today as part of a dash removal I was working on. Think I ended up using a square end screwdriver to get the airbag out since the flat head is difficult like you said..

I have a question can you do the same exact thing if your wires is melted to the air bag ? Can you cut the wires from clockspring to air bag? throw away the old and replace the clock spring with a new one ?

Very informative!!! I’m thinking something else wasn’t working because of the clock spring ??? But I don’t remember what it was but I’m hoping you’ll be able to finish something that needed the spring to make it work not sure it’s even a thing but remember you said something about it so let me know if I’m wrong!!!!???? See you in the next video!!!

I see your clock spring is the full assembly. When i find them to purchase they are usually just the clock spring housing. Does that part just pop out of the housing you removed with the directional stick? I hope this question makes sense. Im looking to install a heated steering wheel in my scat pack. I found the wheel and clock spring am i can enable it in the radio. Im just wondering about the clock spring before i purchase one.

Is the clock spring the same as the SCM (steering control module)? My challenger is throwing a P1009-00 code and my brights won't work. I can't find anything on RUclips regarding replacement of the SCM. I appreciate your video and the great information within it.

Love the tip on the tool and will have to use it once I get around to installing my new CF wheel. One thing worth noting is the bolt that holds the wheel in place is supposed to be a one-time use bolt because the factory has some sort of thread locker on it. I just put a little Loctite on it when I screw mine back in. The steering wheel bolt torque is 63 ft lbs and if you want a new Mopar bolt, the part number is 6511907AA.

The "Insight" gleaned from this video is hardly commensurate with the actual process of removing the air bag. But if you've done it then no need to point out "the change" that will make it actually do'able in a reasonable amount of time. @@AndreGuerrieri

    • @AndreGuerrieri

You said there were a lot of garbage videos online. Yeah, this is another one. You went to a whole speech about using a cut off driver handle, thats right (I use a t handled torx wrench) but you could have just removed the two phillips behind the wheel and been able to see where the metal springs are to push on, easy. You didnt even show the actual removal , you skipped that whole sequence. lol
