Shalom Nehemia. This is one of the many bible verses that I keep close to my heart. Jeremiah 17 : 5. Thus saith The LORD; Cursed ( mind u ) be the man that trusteth in man and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from The LORD.
I don't care whose seat the rabbis, the pope, or the pastors sit. I only trust The Holy Spirit of ELOHIM, Ruach HaEmet to guide n lead me, n He has helped me to keep the Torah. All thanks to Adonai n Rabbi Yeshua HaMashiach who has not left me here as a orphan to depend on man.

    Shalom Nehemiah and Michael,
I of course agree with both of you that Colossians 2:16 was written to an asssmbly that WAS keeping the feasts, new moons and Sabbath, and outsiders were coming in and disuading them from doing so.
But I want to push back a little on your conclusion about *who* those outsiders were. Paul describes them as "worshipping celestial beings" and "harshly treating their bodies" and "enslaved to elemental principles of the world". These are not descriptive of the Pharisees, by any stretch of the imagination. You seem to dismiss the option outright that these could have been pagan, Cynic ascetics that outright condemned pleasure or feasting of any kind. But that is precisely what fits the bill here as far as Paul's description. A growing number of scholars are recognizing this connection. There are Cynic writings that make similar statements to the "do not handle, do not taste, do not touch".
So while I agree with you both that there were often issues with the "dogmasin" of certain Pharisaic sects, I think trying to implicate them in this opposition in Colossians 2:16 is not a sound approach when the context of Colossians is thoroughly analyzed.

Paul likely was not so much fighting Pharisees, because he still bragged about being a Pharisee. He was probably telling “his” people not to listen to the real 12 apostles. You can see the same thing in at least two different letters.
2 Corinthians 11:4 For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted, you bear this beautifully.
For I consider myself not in the least inferior to the most eminent apostles.
Paul’s gospel is different than the 12 teach. That’s why he keeps saying “my gospel”, which is the one from his “secret vision”.
Romans 16:25 Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past,
He says he learned nothing from the 12.
Galatians 2:6 But from those who were of high reputation (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)-well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me.

I believe I’m in the same place as the church of Colossians was in. I kept the Feasts for two years according to the Jewish calendar. I’ve been studying it-the Mazzaroth and th calendar in Enoch. I believe God is teaching me that His calendar doesn’t require any observation. The Bible doesn’t tell us to sight barley or the new moon, so these things aren’t Biblical. Rosh Chodesh doesn’t mean “new moon” anywhere in the Bible-it’s a mistranslation for Babylonian ways that Israel took on. It’s good to look at history, but if they were doing it wrong, then we’re doing it wrong by following them. God’s calendar is a calanedar based on the sun. Yeshua is the Sun of Righteousness. The moon represents the body. The sun tracks through the constellations in 364 days. The moon calendar is 354 days. The moon does its own thing several months, not following the sun, just like us. We follow men and traditions instead of Yeshua. The Jewish calendar has to make up for the days of the sun by adding leap years and days, but this isn’t God’s calendar but His is perfect. I read Revelation 12:1. It says “And a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun (the Sun of a righteousness), with the moon under her feet (pagan traditions), and on her head a crown of 12 stars.” Her children keep the commandments of God and have/hold to faith in Yeshua. This is Israel.

How is sabbath not based on the sun? He says “7th” day. Sun makes days, then your job is to count them.
      How not “observe” the moon?
He exactly says “You shall observe the moon of Aviv.”
How not barely? The word “Aviv” itself is barley.

I’ve studied Paul and Christianity had grossly misinterpreted a lot of what he said. Being under the law doesn’t mean what they think it means for example. Paul actually defines by how you keep the law and not whether you keep the law along with the potential punishments that go along with it. I talk about this more on my blog

Excellent, Nehemia. Scripture agrees with your assessment:
"Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.
One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living. But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ."
    Romans 14:1-10
Edit: The above is NOT saying that one can eat what G.OD specifically states is NOT food (i.e. pork, shellfish, etc.). Thought I'd add that because MOST Christians do not read Scripture in it's historical, societal, or Old Testament CONTEXT.

So what was the point of Peter’s Vision?
9 The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. 10 Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance 11 and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. 13 And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.”
14 But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.”
15 And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.” 16 This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again.

@@koreyoneal2623 ok.. which verses in Acts 11 does Peter say that [his vision] "wasn't about food, it was about people"?
      * I recognize that the angel visitation to Cornelius' house informing him to send for Peter and the vision Peter was given on the rooftop was the making of a divine appointment. The primary purpose of this meeting was set up by God to show each man God's plan to bring (believing) Jews and Gentiles together to remove the wall of separation thereby making one new man. This one new man is the composition of the church and the body of Messiah.
So yes Acts 10 & 11 are primarily about "people". No arguments there.. but the fact remains the Lord chose to use non-kosher foods to communicate to Peter the extent of the new covenant which does not distinguish between kosher and non-kosher foods. Peter was no longer under kosher laws. Peter was to consider not just Cornelius the gentile to be "clean".. but his home.. his dinner table.. his family.. and the foods he would serve Peter clean as well.
Either Yeshua breaks down "the wall of separation" between Jew & Gentile or He doesn't. That "wall" includes food.
Does this mean a jewish person must now acquire a taste for ham sandwiches!? No. But he is under no law of Moshe, this side of the cross ✝️, to refuse it.
Jew and Gentile are, in every sense, one in Yeshua.
Baruch haba b'shem Adonai! Forever. Amen 🕎✝️

Paul was received by, and respected the Kahal of Yeshu'a HaMashiach, but there were Pharasee converts that still held to, and taught their Rabbinic traditions of the Oral Torah. Just as all the denominations separate from each other by their traditions. In the first Century there were the disciples of John the Baptist that were so stuck in the practices they learned as Baptists, they didn't comprehend and obey the admonition to follow Yeshu'a, the Lamb of Yah.

James set up Paul similarly to how Gamaliel2 set up Joshua.
Paul had to publicly deny what he had been teaching, in order to save his neck. Paul was accused of APOSTASY. This comes with a death sentence biblicaly. At least it would have discredited Paul from continuing to covertly teach his lawlessness.

The only command us Christians have is from Jesus Himself: To love each other as I have loved you. This command includes all good things, such as the Great Commandments (Deut 6 and Lev 19), Jesus's teaching such as to love our enemies and to pray for them, the actions of the good Samaritan, Paul's teaching such as if you are not doing something in love, it is worthless, not to judge your brother, that all food is clean, acceptable not to observe any date, not to place a stumbling block before a weak Christian (i.e., limit your liberty in such a situation), if possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men, aand many other matters from the Bible.
Paul's theme verse in Roman 8:2; For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
