Just a short video of what rusted toyota truck frames look like, i think the ones in this video is from toyota tacoma but maybe they could also be from 1st gen tundras.
I see some areas where I may have missed when I under coated my own tundra that could potentially develop rust, so I will be going back under to spray/undercoat some of my trusted CRC rust inhibitor (amzn.to/3hKq9EW) when the weather warms up.

Exactly!! These frames are in very good shape compared to what I've seen in other videos. But, due to liability, I guess Toyota opted to replace them. These new frames won't last any longer than the first ones did. It's the same junk recycled steel made from soup cans and rusty metal!!
They’re definitely, in better shape than my 2006 Tacoma sr5. I’m currently, trying to figure out how to fix it. I’ve only had the truck for a year and didnt even know to inspect the frame that closely. I never heard of the frames having rust problems until I purchased this thing lol. First Toyota I’ve owned. It’s messed up that it’s got 135,000 miles and runs great with the 4.0. The body looks good too.
It’s worth pointing out that this was from 2005 to 2015 that were effected. It was Toyota wide as well with everything from the FJ cruiser to the tundra to the Tacomas to even the 4Runner that were effected. 2wd 4wd it didn’t matter, if they found a 3/8 or bigger hole they replaced it. When they did my 08 base they replaced the lines, the electrical wires even the rear leaf springs. Oddly they didn’t replace the rear bumper ( already pretty holey) and the upper front control arms ( very scaled up) or the rear quater panel mounts ( rotted away ) they also left my OEM shocks on ( both blew 2 summers later ). They also neglected to align it. Later I found out what the issue was. See Toyota subcontracted out to an American company Dana Corp to manufacture the frames to Toyota spec, they did this to tout the “ American” built Tacoma ( funny since the Tacomas at that thing were all Cali built ). Anyways complaints started to roll in regarding excessive rusting in northern climates where they used more corrosive chemicals to clear roads. Mine had began to scale up pretty bad and I knew something wasn’t right. Turns out Dana used subpar materials and subpar coatings on the frames which caused them to literally dissolve. They found 2 3/8 inch holes in my frame near the rear bed mounts. That replacement frame still looked solid when I sold the truck. Like I said it was found to be subpar materials from Dana corp. The 16 and up after being redesigned has kept manufacturing of the frames in house. This seems to have solved the issue
It actually went up to 2017 tacoma's as well. I was given a 10yr warranty direct from Toyota on my old trucks frame. I had to have the installer install frame plugs to get the warranty
@@21222or the 22 I replaced the 08 with does seem to have some minor issues with the silica bronze welds they used. The rust is minimal however I’ll probably waxoyl hardcoat mine this fall prior to buying the lease out. I’ll need new brake pads in the fall anyways so I figure if I’m going to have the front wheels off the ground it’s a good time to, paint the calipers for rust resistance, hardcoat my frame for the same and clean up anything under there that needs attention. Lastly grease the snot out of the spare tire lift mechanism to ensure it keeps working
I have a 2005 Tundra where the frame has given out around the passenger's front control arms.
56K miles on it.
My 1999 Tacoma is not living in a garage, that frame rusted out. I wish Toyota would step up and help, make these frames available; I'll do the work.
I have also done this. I took photos of new ones as well. Then I stripped mine and epoxy coated it. That is after I boxed it of course.
You are 100% correct if you love your truck you need to do whatever you can to prevent the rust.

Wish they hot dipped galavnized those frames then there would be zero issues with rust for 20 years plus

FYI, I use "CRC marine corrosion inhibitor," which really does work, I'm in Canada and drive 07 Tundra all winter long, and this stuff has almost stopped the rust.
It will rust from inside out. I use same and it do not stop rust from inside.
thats also what I use, I sprayed mine from day 1 of ownership and i think for now it's still a very clean frame been 4 years.

@@zell863that is good read, but not sure if the rustoleum cgc is the same with what was mentioned here, CRC Marine corrosion inhibitor is a hard wax form material.
I have an 06 tundra just found out there’s holes right through the frame. Toyota doesn’t wanna hear about it.. I’m going to call Better Business Bureau ASAP
My 06 Tacoma's motor mount broke off from the frame. Same story. Nothing can be done apparently (except pull the motor out of the truck and fix it myself)
seems to be a serious problem. not sure how many years back does the frame recall covers.

If only they used thicker C chanel like 1/4 wall then the frames would be strong but the 1/8 to 3/16 thin metal is weak.
All we can do is metigate the rust or slow it down. It's unfortunate that most people don't oil spray new vehicles.
I do that to my offroad vehicles.

My Hilux is much beefier and really massive in comparison. I flushed the frame and all contact points with grease and wax
The boxed frame, or 1st generation was even worse, or just as bad, depending on who you ask or what you see. The 2nd generation (the frames in this video) have an open C channel frame in the main section, and they rot far worse that what you see in this video. I'm surprised they changed these frames, they aren't rutted much at all compared to what I've seen. Anyway, boxing it in my work with good new steel, but it does not help with the steel that Toyota uses, it seems to make it even worse...
All vehicles should be undercoating straight from the factors or at the dealerships. That would have created tons of issues. How can one tell if a used ones been replaced

Where can i buy one of these so called rusted frames? I was told my 06 Tacoma didn't qualify due to lack of perosity or something. Mine is full of holes and all of it looks like the 2 or 3 spots you have pointed out 😢. Like all orange and flaking.
I was thinking the same, they could have them for sale but. I believe the deal for the dealer was they have to return the frames to toyota to get the new frames.
Have you checked with your dealer or local rep?? The 1st gen Tacoma recall is over, IDK about the 2nd gen...
Once rust has started there's actually no return.
Why does rust always start on the welds?
I believe these were 2nd gen frames, and they left the main portion as a C channel instead of boxing it in. BUT, those frames rust just as bad and these frames you're looking at are nothing compared to what I've seen, they aren't that bad. But, due to liability, they had to change them. I do not recommend using rubberized undercoating, it traps moisture. You are better of using Wool Wax, Fluid Film or other liquid/greasy/waxy coatings... And as far as that "Safe-T-Cap" stuff goes, in my opinion that is a band aid, you are only covering the rust. It is far better to cut/chop out all rust and weld in new good metal to what's left of the good Toyota metal. Their products aren't too cheap either, you can spend 3/4K patching your frame or buy your own 5.5" and 2.75" x .125 thick steel (and some random sizes etc) and have at it with a gas Mig welder...
You do cut off the rusty portion when u saftey cap. I've done several. Works very well.
Ya I have an 03 with 147,000 miles on it, the leaf spring broke right off the frame, very Fuckin dangerous,excuse my language, it’s just been a nightmare cause like I say the truck engine and tranny perfect dissent leak a drop of anything, wish Toyota would replace it for me

You see where the motor mount welds are all rusty. Mine actually broke and it appears the mount pushed itself into the middle of the frame. FML
that sucks, time to push toyota to get you a new frame.
Toyota recalled the 2nd gen frames, you should have gotten a letter. But, don't think that helps too much because the new frame will rot just as bad and just as fast. And, they make you pay for all the bits and pieces that are damaged during the frame swap; costing as little as 800$ up to 3000$ in some case which means leaf springs, shocks, struts, fuel lines, brake lines etc etc. When Toyota did the original 1st gen recalls they paid for EVERYTHING, you dropped it off, came back in a week or 2 and said "Thank You"; you were not responsible for any part of that frame swap. Not anymore...

You mean "patch up" semi restore?? It ends up costing a couple thousand bucks to do a patch job, quite a bit more for a good job. The kits they sell like "Safe-T-Cap" slide over the rusty metal and get welded in place, what good is that?? You can't cover bad metal because it traps moisture behind it, you have to chop out and remove all rust, then weld in good new metal. I just did my 2003 Tacoma and it took me weeks working on it every night, but it's solid as a rock now. Painted on the outside and fluid filmed on the inside, time will tell...
Frames should be galvanized for the price we pay!!!

a friend of mine has a Subaru 2003 and there is not a bit of rust anywhere on or under the car. Toyota sucks. it ruts away , cheap Chinese recycled pre rusted metal. Shame on you Toyota. Shame.
a 2003 subaru has gone through about 5 sets of head gaskets by now. Probably a couple of warped heads too.
The frames that had rust problems were US made with subpar coating.
