Zahndrekh is a Necron Overlord and Nemesor of the Sautekh Dynasty who was once counted amongst the greatest generals of the lost Necrontyr empire. It was through his campaigns of conquest that his Tomb World of Gidrim rose from a small and insignificant planet on the fringes of the galaxy to become the iron-handed ruler of a dozen star systems.
Even now, though Gidrim has been subsumed as a crownworld of the larger Sautekh Dynasty, Zahndrekh is numbered amongst the mightiest of its heroes.
It is a reputation well deserved, for Gidrim is one of the more expansionist of the recently awoken crownworlds of Sautekh, and Zahndrekh's undying armies are an ever-present peril of the Milky Way Galaxy's Eastern Fringe.

That's actually something that i dislike about 40k. Their obsession with "everything is terrible" fucked the scale of the imperium so much that they needed to make a faction that is completely foreign to everything in the galaxy just to have an excuse to write characters that aren't evil to the point of being stupid.
then again it might be the players fault because they tried to tone down the grim dark with tau but everyone's panties got bunched up.

Reading the Indomitus book drove this point home for me. The Ultramarines are bio-engineered to never ever feel human emotions or suffer the "failings" of a regular human mind. They are perfect to the point of not being human, whereas the Necrons bicker and fight, and are arrogant, greedy, jealous, and petty - which makes them muuuuch more relatable.

Nemesor Zahndrekh is my favorite of the Necron named characters simply because of how he acts like a senile old man. I remember I actually included him in a Dark Heresy campaign I ran which saw the Inquisitor and the player characters being captured by the Necrons as "honoured prisoners" by Zahndrekh, where he invited the party to a feast, it was hilariously awkward since in the back of the player's minds while they were enjoying my descriptions of Zahndrekh trying to drink wine and spilling it everywhere, they knew they had to find a way to escape before Obyron decided to get rid of them.

Oh, an episode about Warhammer's android version of Don Quixote! I was honestly expecting an episode on Trazyn first due to just how much of a fan favorite he his, but this was a really nice surprise!
Kind of surprised the Battle of Uttu Prime wasn't mentioned. But understandable since it was a one-off mention in one of the Codexes. Zahndrakh is actually rather infamous among the Imperium for being the one to unleash the first recorded Megalith (basically a gigantic Monolith that can carry legions of Monoliths inside it) on humanity. It was a Superweapon so destructive it wiped out 3 full Regiments of Catachans, and 3 full Companies of Imperial Fists. And noted to be one of the most one-sided and catastrophic defeats in both forces miltary histories. And from his perspective it was just him playing with a toy he doesn't get to use often!

The Necrons will always be a very interesting faction because of the three faces they take on in the lore. From one angle they are unfeeling, undying, robots. Then you have all of their meme characters like Trayzn and Zahndrekh, adding comedy to them. Then you have the reality of their situation, which both Trazyn and Zahndrekh actually embody, they are a dying race, cursed by their own immortality. Zahndrekh, when he is lucid, points out that they have nothing to do, they either fight constantly to occupy themselves, or sit still and let the thoughts regarding the loss of their bodies take over their mind for the rest of eternity. Trazyn points out that his race is dying and along with it, while he is immortal, his memory is failing. His collection is largely motivated by three desires, to preserve his memory, to preserve what remaining artifacts survive from the Necrontyr, and lasty to retain the appreciation of art and creativity that his race has lost since the biotransference.
The Necrons are really the most tragic race in 40k. Cursed at birth to live half-lives, they searched the stars to find immortality. They paid the ultimate price to achieve what they thought they wanted, and through the eyes of the Silent King, save their race. Now they are cursed again, their immortality means nothing in the face of their soulless existence. Their metal forms took away their ability to repopulate, and as such, they are only destined to die out as attrition from war, decay, and the flayer virus, slowly but inevitably reduce their numbers.

In The Infinite and the Divine, at the start of one of the chapters, there’s a quote from Nemesor Zahndrekh, The Logic of Battle. So this means that Zahndrekh wrote the Necron Equivalent of Sun Tzu’s, The Art of War. Making Nemesor Zahndrekh, robot skeleton Sun Tzu. With fake dementia

Fits with Sun Tzu's basic principle of all warfare as far down as feints in one-on-one combat being based on deception. Might be a ruse to make him appear weak where he is strong.

So he creates this facade of insanity but balancing it out with his genius to stay in power, because if the others find out he still his soul or atleast part.... he would be in *major trouble*

The inspiration behind these characters is clearly Cervante's Don Quixote. Zahndrekh is the deluded chivalric knight, living (perhaps deliberately) in a world of greater meaning to him. His accomplice is Sancho Panzo, who sees the world as it is, but has inexhaustible love and loyalty to his liege. Its part of the genius of 40k to take a classic of World liyerature, and trabsplant it so effortlessly into their own lore world.

The Zandrekh/Obyron combo gave us one of the only turn one melee deepstrikes in 9th edition and redeployment flexibility/general and total battlefield chaos that would make a Blood Angel jealous,
    and I absolutely loved it.
Horus and Sangy's epic bromance, Fulgrim and the Gorgon, the Emperor and Malechor (or however you spell his name); these universe-changing love stories for the ages have nothing on the eon-spanning bond between a pair of immortal, soulless pieces of sentient metal.
Even better: after said melee deepstrike, you could teleport them back to safety behind your lines (or your Seraptek Heavy Construct, also known as the most badass piece of terrain to ever grace a battlefield).
The 9th edition Necron codex was an imbalanced mess, and I kinda miss it.
