- 안녕하세요! I am currently an exchange student from Texas State University here at Kookmin University in Seoul, South Korea for the spring 2018 semester! Even though the dorms are small and not always ideal, i'm close to campus, friends, and i've turned this little space into a comfort zone for me. Enjoy!

rinchee I’m excited for you! I wish I could stay another semester, the experience is amazing! I would love to do a university tour, I may need to look into something to stabilize my camera while walking first, but I’ll work on it!

rinchee it really is! It’s small, at least compared to my home university, but the nature is beautiful and the university is kept up really well. All the students love to hang out outside and there’s always people playing games at the soccer field. The campus is also built into the mounting so walking around can be a chore but the views are rewarding and you can hike up the mountain right from the university any time you want. The campus even has cats on the grounds that they take care of!

Hi I’m going to study abroad at Kookmin in the spring and I was wondering where did you put majority of your clothes? Is there any extra storage space to put your clothes. I’m worried that I won’t have enough room

OMG it's too small, I'm planning to do a semester there next year, in fact I'm collecting all the documentation to apply but the size of the dormitory is frightening, do you know if there are another options allowed for international students like live with a family or a room alone or another type of dorms with a kitchen?
The room is livable but I guess some people can't live with it. There is another living situation thats more like independent living, and you apply for it once you're accepted into the program and apply to Kookmin University. It will be a spot on Kookmins application and you'll work with an advisor to set up housing. There is no host families in this program or through this university. Thats the typical size of dorms and goshiwons, so you'll just have to work with your advisor and choose to live off campus. The other living is either in Gireum or Hongdae so you will have to commute to school by bus.

Uhm hello, do you happen to know if it is possible to stay four entire years at the kookmin university? As in complete the program?
Ren Noelle technically, yep! It will depend on if the classes you need for your degree. If they have enough classes offered in English that you need, you will be good to study for more than a semester. Unfortunately they did not have enough classes for me to stay longer, but it’s something you will need to talk to your home university and Kookmin about to figure out if you can.

Hi! I'm studying at Kookmin spring 2020 and I was wondering what did you all bring in your suitcase(I'm an over packer), just clothes and things from America that are cheaper here than in Korea? Did everything else like your desk decor and bathroom stuff and organizational stuff, did you get all that there? I'm also going through the USAC program and I was told on campus housing is SUPER competitive. How was it like applying for it and all?
Also for dinner time, did you go out for dinner or sometimes make food or is there a place on campus where kids go eat for like lunch and dinner?
Hi! I would definitely pack light as there are plenty of cheap things to buy there and lots you’re going to want to take home. I brought 2 large suitcases both about halfway full. You can get things like school supplies, desk decor, cleaning supplies, toiletries, etc from Daiso, a dollar store. You really only need to pick up the necessities there. I would suggest bringing things like tampons (they’re not as common so they’re expensive), foundation if you’re not pretty pale, and a set of twin XL sheets from Walmart since they’re a little expensive in KR. That’s really all I brought along besides basic clothes for the season, because I knew I’d want to buy clothes there as well. It is very cold in February and March so do pack a heavy coat! Besides these things, I would just do some googling on things you can’t get in korea that you might want to bring with you.
And actually, on campus housing is really easy. They suggest the dorms and it’s more expensive and a bit of a hassle to live off campus, in my opinion. It’s nice being close to classes and not having to take the bus and train to get to school everyday. It’s cheaper and the only real downside is the size because you’re sharing with 3 others, and the 1am curfew, which was a little flexible anyway. There’s more pros than cons and it’s actually the default option to stay on campus. You have to indicate otherwise if you want to live off campus and you won’t know where you’ll actually be living until right before you get there. You could be living in a small area 15 mins away in Girum or even 35 mins away in hongdae. There might be some cool things about that but for the price and the amount of commuting, I don’t think it’s worth it. Plus you make friends a bit easier when you’re on campus and rooming with others. You’ll be placed with other USAC students typically.
For eating, you have a couple of options. For lunchtime, which runs from pretty early in the day to late afternoon, you can eat in the school cafeterias which are really cheap and delicious! I think the most I ever paid for a full meal there was ₩4,000 (about $4USD). They were tasty and cost effective, you have multiple options to pick from and it’s really convenient. Otherwise, there are a few restaurants that are near campus. You just have to explore the area a little bit but there are at least 10+ within walking distance and a lot more just a quick bus ride away to the Sungshin area, which has lots of stores and fun things to do as well. It’s not common to cook as there is no kitchen area, only a microwave and a refrigerator in the shared common space. Instant food is common in korea, you can pick up some microwave foods or even some fresh foods from local markets/small supermarkets/E-Mart supermarket. Or, the most common thing is to grab something from a convenience store. They’re convenience stores have fresh made foods such as kimbap, sandwiches, fried chicken, ramen, and even microwave dinners that all work really well when you don’t feel like going out to get food. Lastly, it takes some investigating but after a few tries I finally figured out delivery. You can use the app Yogiyo for food delivery. It’s not in English so it will take some translating on your part but once you get the hang of it, you can get anything delivered from noodles to pizza to chicken and more. There’s actually a lot of options! I never went hungry haha.

Also, I saw you favorited a video about SIM cards. There is a bookstore on campus that sells KT SIM cards and I highly recommend doing that instead of getting one elsewhere. It was like $30 for 5 gigs of data and most places have WiFi so it was more for emergency. You just go back to the bookstore to purchase more gigs when you need them, or you can opt for bigger data packages. I went through like 3 different SIM cards from the company I used that sold them at the airport and I don’t recommend it. Bad data plans and really faulty equipment, the SIM cards kept breaking. It’s nice using the service on campus and really convenient!

I can't get in contact with them? I've e-mail them more than 3 times. Asking about their Korean language program. Since I plan to study level 3 & 4. So l could apply as a freshmen for their Film major. The evaluation criteria for the college of arts is just an interview. I want to be fully prepared, because I don't want to be rejected. Since their the only school I'm looking at for freshmen year.

Hello i am currently in the GKS program and i passed the embassy track into my 3 schools kookmin is one of them. are you currently in the program, I have some questions
do you happen to know how the dorms are at the off campus location?
rinchee I don’t know personally, but my one friend lives in the off campus dorms in Hongdae, and another friend lives in the dorms by Gireum Station. From what I know, they’re pretty decent. A pro for on campus is that it’s cheaper and you don’t have to commute to class. It’s also been way easier to make plans and meet friends here! If you want to pay a little more, off campus can get you more privacy to yourself, a more interesting area to live in, and no curfew!
jetdarkstar ahhh i see 🤔 now i'm definitely having doubts on which kind of dorm i want to live in. i desire more space and my introverted self probably can't handle living with 2-3 other people 😅 but i'm also scared of not being able to make friends easily if i live in the off campus location. sighssss
rinchee I honestly would probably recommend the dorm. Even though it can be a bit annoying living with others in such a small setting, I’ve made great friends and I get to go out and do so much more than I know some people experience if they don’t have many friends around them. It’s entirely up to you though! Both are good options for different reasons

hello!! i am currently in my last year of high school and i am dreaming of going to kookmin and major in their metal work and jewellery department.. can you please find out for me if the courses are in english and how to apply for international students not like in terms of exchange students.. i am so clueless and i've been looking for someone to ask and am so thankful i came across ur vlog..love it
mae mae sorry for the late reply. It’s typically very difficult to try to apply to a university on your own, it’s better to work with a program through your home university. With that said, you will probably need to complete your first year of college in your home country and then work with your study abroad department to see if you can be sent to Kookmin. That’s really the only way I know of. Schools prefer foreign students that are being sponsored by a program rather than coming to the school alone

And my penpal suggested to be her roommate with her but do you think it’s better to live in the campus so that it is easier to make friends, to live the experience (1 year) and to be nearer to the university ?
Chanel Rosas hi! Some of the classes are in English! You may have to do some research as there are only some that aren’t in korean, so you should double check you can get the classes you need. And while dorm life wasn’t always ideal, I became super close with my roommates and my neighbors by living in the dorm, plus I got to hang out at school clubs late without worrying about getting home since I was on campus already. I personally do think it helps with the experience and getting to meet people! Plus you’re close to class so you don’t have to wake up early to get ready and travel to class. Only real downside is the curfew but....~shh~ there’s ways around that haha
The off campus housing is either near Gireum station, which is a 10-15 min bus ride away, or in Hongdae, which sounds cool but it’s almost 30+ mins away because you have to take a train AND a bus
