  • It's fast. Sometimes brutally fast. A hushed awe please for the new i7 - faster for gaming than the 7700K, faster than six, eight and ten-core Skylake-X enthusiast chips. And of course, faster than Ryzen. Here's the full lowdown on the flagship Coffee Lake-S i7.

      truth to be told development starts around 2-3 years (sometimes more) before the release of the cpu family
      and finishes about near 1 year before the release. you can say thank for AMD ryzen to bringing competition so the prices will be saner but all last generations including coffee lake
      their specs and performances has nothing to do with ryzen.

    It's incredible that games like Rise of the Tomb Raider are even playable on an i7-2770k. back in 1995 I bough a top of the line 133mhz pentium and 5 years later in 2000 games like Diablo II couldn't even run on it just shows how slowly cpus are advancing these days.

    • @GraveUypo
      @GraveUypo 6 лет назад +4

      in 1996 there were cpus already thrice as fast as that 133mhz. yes, it used to progress more in one year than it does in a decade now.

      Typical AMD fanboy Intel hater comment. I'll take this chip any day over the Ryzen chips. I have to buy a new motherboard anyway so I don't really care. I never understood upgrading only the CPU anyway. When I upgrade my CPU I do the whole nine yards: motherboard, memory, and CPU.

    • @DJ5540
      @DJ5540 6 лет назад +25

      +MadFinnTech
      There is absolutely zero technological improvements to justify getting a whole other board. It's literally a 7700k with 2 extra cores. I understand upgrading your MOBO where it makes sense, like going from DDR3 to DDR4, but there is no legitimate reason to need to upgrade your board other than because Intel wants you to.
      I can at least expect better IPC and more overclocking headroom from the Zen refresh coming next year AND I don't need to spend another 200+ dollars on a motherboard.

      Same here. Finally something I feel good to replace my 4770K with. I just kind of want to go to enthusiast platform, though. If not then it's 8700K for sure, would be way cheaper at least.

      MadFinnTech as much as I would like to go with an enthusiast platform I just can't justify it. I wouldn't use it fully. Heck, I could probably even go for the i5 but I get into streaming on the occasion. That's my justification for the i7 at least lol.

    In my opinion the 8700 is the better deal than the 8700K. 5 to maybe 10% performance increase depending on if you win the silicone lottery for £60 more and plus a liquid cooled solution which is like another 80-100 pounds or more to achieve 5ghz+ stable just isn't worth it. But hey, you do you; that's what's amazing about the PC - we have a ton of options.

    The ddr4 memory improvement here is extremely important. So many people keep saying ram speed doesn't matter, on a high overclock, or when using 4 memory modules memory clocks are limited to to stress on the memory controller. And judging from this I would rather set my 8700k to 4.6ghz at 1.2volts with no avx offset and run my ram at it's xmp of 3600mhz rather than have insane 90c temps just to get to 4.8 on air without delidding and then have to run my ram at 3200mhz because of the stress the overclock has put on the board.
    Can't wait to finish my build and enjoy this beast.

    i watched a 8600k vs 1600, 8600k had double the CPU usage of the ryzen, but higher FPS. Is it really worth it when the Coffeelake CPU costs more, the z370 motherboard costs more, and its working very hard to achieve that FPS. when Ryzen CPU costs less, Ryzen motherboard costs less, and barely does any work to achieve a similar but inferior FPS. Doesn't that mean Intel CPUs will struggle to game if you have other programs open, or streaming and rendering? Ryzen costs less and the CPU has plenty of overhead for any other software you may choose to run at the same time.

    • @MusaM8
      @MusaM8 6 лет назад +4

      Ryzen will be the best alternative for 95% of people, while the 8700K will make sense for the people that want the absolute best gaming computer no matter the performance/cost ratio, if they have a 1080Ti and a 144Hz monitor at least.

    • @B.D.E.
      @B.D.E. 6 лет назад +1

      No it just means that AMD cpus aren't being used as effectively by the game. That extra FPS is also overhead.

    Seen many and this one is the most complete review I seen, show what many of them are missing, like stock vs OC vs RAMspeed performance, both productivy and gaming. Only missing what would happen at 1440p and 4k, but we all know we need that free room for future games. Sad we still need more power to secure 144Hz since with all this new high refresh monitors is nice to keep the 100+ fps at all times.

The ringbus is designed to run well on any application no matter the optimization. Essemtailly its designed to run well on good or bad optimization apps. You could mention these wouldn't even exist without AMD's comeback. But I don't expect you to mention that despite the performance leap. You are still better buying a nice cheap B350 motherboard, slap Ryzen in there, get the recommended fastest ram, nice air cooler, overclock to taste and you have the most cost-effective beast of a computer that can have a damn good go at being a workstation while serving you with every game set to come out for years to come.
    Or you can pay a lot more for an Intel motherboard that will be obsolete next year probably and support building the Intel monopoly that will put it back as the only game in town. at which point all development in speed and cores will stop and you'll go back to getting 5-10% bumps every few years. Up to you though :)

    • @johnconnor2402

      Coffee Lake would have been released even without AMD's comeback. The most important thing is price point. Intel would have sold the 8700K for $600-700 if Ryzen wasn't on the market.

      I imagine these chips have been in development for a long time though, I'd imagine the only influence AMD had was on Intels pricing for this generation

    HUGE KUDOS to Richard Leadbetter!! All the work you put in for all those comparisons must have taken forever to compile. Thank you! Great video!
    I have an OC 4790K and a 1080 GTX FTW, and $2500 ready to go to buy an 8700K processor (if I can find one!). But after watching the video, overclocking the 8700K does not seem to yield as much performance increase as simply adding 3000 MHz memory. So my question to Richard is: If I am only going to be gaming (think Ashes of the Singularity), should I just buy the 8700 instead of the 8700K?

      20% faster at best for 100% more money, plus a far more expensive motherboard. For me it's byebye 2600K, hello Ryzen. Waiting for this thing was a mistake.

      surf_steve For like what, 5-10% difference? Get over it, you don't buy this processor (8700k) to play games at 1080p at its current price point alongside a GTX 1080 or 1080ti. You're better off with an i5 8400 or i3 8350k if you want 1080p 144fps. But are you even an esports gamer anyway or are you just fanboying the shit out of Intel?

      Boards starting from 120$ only. Great for budget builders worldwide.

      Not even close. It took the best chip to come out of AMD in nearly a decade to get these Intel clowns to finally push their flagship chips forward a decent amount. Proud owner of a Ryzen 1800x. I'm not changing out my motherboard for at least two years, end of story there. And If I want an upgrade I'm prbably getting Zen 2, or Zen 3 a couple years from now

    As someone who has been exicted to finally build my own pc the last couple months, I am very happy that I waited for this, instead of buying into the Ryzen hype. Hate all you want, but I will stick to the better product period

    First time in a decade the cpu market is real, and good for consumers.

    Love DigitalFoundry reviews. What I miss for the cpu things is a CPU usage graph.
