You're the man Brian! One of the kindest humans I've ever met. Lower on the list for other species though. 😜
Thanks man! Sloths are pretty sweet though right?
Great explanation. Just got an inspection to see what was leaking oil and it was this part. I don't know a lot about cars but after watching this I feel fine about replacing the sending unit myself. Thanks!
I once used teflon tape on 1988 nova oil light sender switch only to have the light not come on at all. A quick check showed the teflon insulated the body of the sensor from the engine block. I cleaned it up and put on a dab of pipe dope then it worked.
The oil pressure switch and oil pressure sending unit are two different types of devices. The oil pressure switch connects to the oil light on the dash. The oil pressure sending unit connects to the oil pressure gage and/or computer. The oil pressure switch is just an on/off device. The oil pressure sending unit gives a voltage proportional to the amount of oil pressure.
Thank you for explaining the difference
I had no idea that two of my favorite RUclipsrs know each other! Brian and Jason are awesome geniuses keep up the great work guys!
"Rinse and repeat" haha, brilliant! Nice explanation on the oil pressure sensor too Brian. The cutaway was particularly helpful in explaining how it works.
Always learning something new from Briansmobile1
Grateful for the dissemination in your videos, particularly Subaru tips.
Love it! Thanks easy explanation for a complicated problem. Keep up the good work Brian!
Great explanation!! I particularly enjoyed the dissected pressure sender.
Thanks Gary!
long time subscrber bell clicked, thanks Brian for all your hard work on the videos, lots of this I know but still enjoy your humor!
Great video, you never disappoint. Now we need an RC video.
Another great video Brian,,, I love learning and teaching others on how things work. So the internal functioning of even the most mundane devices interest me. And thank you for pointing out why I wasn't getting all of your postings. Who knew of the little bell. You did obviously. Also just subscribed to Engineering Explained... Have a great New Year!
Simple and well explained. 👍
Thank you for this explanation. this explains a lot
What about a case where the oil pressure light comes on while idling but goes off when you accelerate?
Very well explained thanks.
Your the best man.
Good explanation; simple and direct.
good explanation, all these years and i never looked inside an oil pressure sensor, just threw the old one in the garbage
I like it when you do the whiteboard explanations
Agreed. All of his presentations with the whiteboard have been excellent.
good video. adding Teflon tape may inhibit /stop continuity.
great job men it gives me a better idea on what to do to get the tread head out of the block🤣that sucker broke off on me because I over tight it
Nice job! I really enjoy your videos.
I enjoy his lessons too.
er, wouldn't the teflon potentially keep it from working, if it needs a good ground?
Great explanation. Would you be able to tell me about code P06DD? I replaced the sensor you explained, unplugged the battery/reset with ODB reader. Drove and the light remains on with the dodge grand caravan 2012 riding rough. I had the oil replaced and filter at the local valvolin. At the time of the oil change the idiot light had been on. What are your thoughts? Again thank you for your video. 😊
thanks for sharing. BUT do not put teflon tape on, because as you explain this unit sends ground, and it takes the ground from the engine block. so, you are isolating the unit. Cheers¡
What if you soldered a lead onto the sending units lead and ran that to an engine ground then used all the tape you want to prevent leaks? Wouldnt that still give you proper ground as long as the jumper lead you used wasent long or high resistance…? Just because those units tend to be the cause of most oil leaks and on some motors it will pump out every bit of oil you got in the matter of seconds if the thing comes out or breaks off
Any suggestions on how to secure the sensor if the engine block thread is stripped? I can hand tighten the sensor but once I try to further tighten it with socket wrench it becomes loose again .
If I put an electric oil pressure sender in a fuel rail , would gas with ethanol make any of the sender go bad ? Or leak ?
Very good bro!!!
I have an oil pressure sending unit on a 350 Chevy it's got great oil pressure going down the road I have a small link by it soon as I step right on it it'll go down to 10 lb would definitely doing it
are those threads your ground ? should there be a little of metal on the end for a good ground ??? just say'n
I own a lot of Saabs, and the 1999-2003 years were well known for "sludging". A lot of people would run the cars with the oil pickup filter plugged 90% full, you'd hear lifter noise WELL before pressure became an issue, and by the time the light actually triggered (I believe it comes on at 5 or 10 psi in the Saabs) the pressure was low enough that the damage was mostly done already. I heard the lifter noise on my wife's convertible, took the pan off and cleaned the "sludge" out of the drain pickup, it was about 40% blocked. By the time the warning light comes on it's usually 90% or more blocked :(
I don't know if I like the wig or the video more. Both. I like both more.
Cool video/explanation!
I think the confusion some people have about the oil sending unit "sending oil" has to do with the fact that back in the day of oil pressure gauges, there were some that had a long piece of tiny hose that actually did bring oil to the back of the gauge. These were not electrical gauges but actual hydraulic gauges. Might still see some on hot rods.
What does the bell do? I still get your videos in my subscription tab and I do not recall clicking on any bells?
You're lucky. Most channels saw an 80% drop in initial engagement when the implementation went down.
Yeah, I got about a 40% drop on my channel. I've been missing you buddy, now I know I haven't been hearing from you. Bell clicked!
What I do not understand/like is the fact that they make this change and leave it up to the creators to figure it out.Just seems like they are waving the middle finger at you/us.
Please I am in Isolated Island and no spare sensor available here, is there any possible way to replace this sensor in order to run my generator to top up my batteries.
NEVER USE TEFLON ON ANY SENSOR OR SENDER THAT IS DESIGNED TO GET ITS GROUND FROM ITS METAL THREADS!
Exactly!
No PTFE tape, the switch has to go to ground.Loctite 592 is good PTFE is a lubricant. Love the hair.
love the explanation videos, great information!
Hahahaha the hair is gnarly!!! wicked flow
Curious,,, you made the point that the "housing" of the oil sending unit and/or possibly the oil pressure censor are grounded through that housing to function,,, adding Teflon tape to the threads of one or both components will interrupt the ground as the components get their ground from threading it/them into the block or mounting attachments fastened to the block. You would end up getting interrupted or inaccurate signals. Then,,, the expensive and time consuming chase is on to find another cause of gauge and sensor problems !!
I like your new hat! Chris
Awesome video man. I love engineering explained. You and Jason would make a beautiful baby 😊
hey brian!!!!! that wig looks good!!!!
Please if you have time help me out... the oil light came on in my car on Christmas. And stayed all day. It would go off when I rev the engine. When it’s idle it comes on... then it went away for like a month and then would go away and come back for a few days... now the oil light and low oil pressure light is on constantly... I smell burnt oil from the vent when the light is on... one person said it was the valve cover gasket. But I got that fixed a couple years ago... another place says it’s the oil sending unit... I’ve been researching and trying to diagnose it myself cause it sounds like both... I was trying to find the oil switch to see if it had oil on it but I couldn’t find it. I know it’s on the right side of my car though. The oil looks like it’s coming from the right side of the valve cover gasket and spark plugs maybe under neath . But I’m not no mechanic... by the symptoms I’ve described what do you think it is???
Can the sensor be clean with carb cleaner?
My 1995 runner ran without oil for a while. I replace It regularly but the Guage tells me that the oil pressure is low rather often if I run my vehicle a while it says my oil pressure is okay
Do I half to have an oil sensor? I can't get the darn thing out. And it apparently is stopping my fuel pump. Is there a workaround for that problem? Looks like above sending unit is access for a mechanical gauge.
Couldn't I just run a gauge off of there to my dash? And just forget about that OPS
So if you put Teflon on the thread how are you getting the ground
COOL VIDEO. Neeto. More. Can you do a knuter valve sometime?
Is that also call the oil pressure sensor?
My car(1990 300zx) shows plenty of oil pressure when I first turn it on but after it is warmed up the oil pressure gauge flickers and slowly drop to 0 pressure, is it a bad oil pressure switch?
Dude your awesome. Thanks heaps for this!!
How about splainin the difference between a oil pressure transmitter and a oil pressure switch? I am most familiar with the two but something to pass onto your viewers. We used to enlarge the hole in the back of the transmitter to speed up the signal sent to the gauge. Ken
Will do man thanks for the helpful vids.
Dude just a heads up, I think RUclips is deleting subscribers. I did click on the bell. I've been subscribed to your channel for a long time. I had to subscribe again for some weird reason. I enjoy watching these videos. Thanks.
What causes intermittent pressure.. At idle nothing but goes up if you raise idle a little.
So if my oil pressure switch is bad, does that mean that only the switch is bad and there is indeed oil pressure in my engine
So its more of an oil receiving unit or a ground sending unit.
wouldnt putting ptfe tape on the threads give it no ground for the signal to happen ?
The Teflon tape does not electrically insulate the switch from ground. It only fills in the gaps to keep oil from leaking out. There are many parts of the threads still making electrical contact.
What about the oil cooler lines where does that fit into?
Wouldn't Teflon tape cut off the ground??
did i miss where you say how much pressure makes it work and if the light for oil pressure comes on are you out of oil
How much pressure? No he didn't say. That makes it more of a universal video.
He did say that the oil light could come on because there is no oil pressure or if it's clogged.
A mechanic had change my oil pressure sensor and it still leaking someone told me he might have practice at five over tidy what is the name of the part The oil sensor screws into
a couple days ago mY oil pressure light came on my 03 wrx but very dimly turned it off was about to take it to the shop turned it on and it hasn't been on since :/
What does it mean if my oil pressure is running high on
LMAO Your hair hahaha Awesome video Brian.
How does it leak oil?
Is this still an active page
Seems like it dosent break the ground connect, as the whole unit is grounded by being screwed to the block. instead closes the ÷dc when pressure drop lighting indicator
Wait what about one with a gauge? That’s what mine has on my 79 Chevy RV
Should it not be called an Oil Sensing Unit ?
Yet it doesn't "sense" oil either- just pressure. It's a tough one to name isn't it?
briansmobile1 I just picked one up today because my wife's car is calling for a oil pressure switch. When I ran the OBDII. She does have a oil leak but I think that is just one of culprit of the leak. But there's a hose that looks to have a leak but not sure just yet. hmm What's your take on it can it be the oil pressure switch is leaking so much that making it look like there's a leak on the hose?
Best. Acxpelnig. Sar. T. Q.
I have a 06 Cadillac sts an it has no oil pressure
Rang your bell....Love the hair.
I love engineering explained! Would love to see you work with him more!
I think you just made my car run again ive changed the oil and just about everything under the hood but it keeps stalling and ive narrowed it down to knock sensors or this oil sending unit car runs but you got to stop and it stalls and says low oil also the pressure gradually drops as the car gets warmed up but will go down to 20-27 psi and then stall once you stop at a light or sign new pressure sensor too car is a 2006 dodge charger srt8 with 10w30 oil i hope this will fix it ive done everything pcv, pcm, break booster check valve, spark plugs n coilpack gaped plugs to .50 new gas pedal, throttle body, map sensor, mas sensor, air filter, alternator, water pump, idle pulley, battery, coolent temp sensor thermostat, battery and still stalles says low oil well i hope this will work car only has 35k miles
Basically I don’t need it unless i want a light to bother me cause my ls swap harness didn’t have a plug for it
Only have a small amount of tape at the back of the threads or there will be no reference to ground
The hair suits you.
Brian I didn't know you wax surfboards on the side haha
Is this the reason my oil pressure indicator goes to high and stays there?
AFAIK,this would be called an oil pressure switch. A sender is used for a gauge, and sends a varying voltage to the gauge, not just an on/off,like for a light.
Good call. Many of them are labeled as a switch, but when you look it up- it's going to say "sending unit" as a default.
1986 vw scrocho has 2 oil light sender switches. Naturally the dealer sold me the wrong one. One closes with pressure and tells you if the oil filter is getting plugged up. The other opens like normal with pressure. Dealer sold me wrong one. Turn car on no light. Start it up and the oil light came on. Another tripe to the dealer for the correct one.
I don't understand how youtube can just change the stuff they did, so now I have to basically re subscribe to all my channels, which is over 500. :(
pdgeman This isn't a RUclips forum on subscriber analytics. Go drunk you're home.
Did you watch the video, he talks about it in the first few seconds, lol.
pdgeman Must have missed that. lol thanks.

OIL PRESSURE SWITCH?
I think the color of that wig is a little bit off. LOL
It was supposed to be grayer?
Did you see where Jason made a video about the life of a real RUclipsr? And he kept responding to all the comments about the gray hair? Probably annoying for him, but he owned it and made it funny.
Kinda like Yankee Doodle Dandee - the South was making fun of the North and the North took it on as their own awesomness instead.
Never use Teflon tape on grounding type sensors, you'll loose your ground and circuit won't work.
Never take engine explanations from a guy with clean fingernails
What about Stephen Hawking
yeah, he put teflon on a ground stud, the cutaway was nice, but the rest of it not so helpful lol
Galing
Now you can explain how many Fords out there use a "gauge" in the dash, BUT it's actually an idiot light with a simple switch...
Same on Chevy. On/off switch only.
The Teflon tape will interrupt ground
😂😂😂are you related to Mr rogers?
I need some help
or the wigg redd right
im all confuse now. i thought that was the oil pressure switch????????????
lmao wtf when I saw that wig am like oh no lol
You have high what if you have high blood pressure
You can't use tape it will not ground
