      You are correct. I hit 3yrs and 21k miles and this ETorque unit failed while I was up in Canada fishing. Ram desire said the warranty ended 2 days prior to going into the dealers shop. They also would not except the extended warranty and I had to go through that nightmare after I got back. Parts and labor fit the ETorque unit was over $2800 US funds.

    From a straight "mileage" perspective, lets break it down. MY 2014 RAM average about 18 mpg. So if its a 10% gain, that puts me to 20 mpg (using round numbers) SO if someone keeps the truck for 150,000 miles at an average gasoline cost of $2.50 or so, A conventional Hemi would burn 8,333 gallons or $20,833 of gas.. this "E version" would burn 7,500 gallons or $18,750 of gas. So basically you are "saving" +/- $2,000 over the 150,000 miles IF you keep the truck that long. AGAIN from a PURE mileage vs. Money perspective, it they charge more than $2,000 for this "E" option on the Hemi are you "Saving" ?? I know you can argue, its more torque, better towing, blah blah blah , ALL of the typical Diesel arguemnts...it ALL depends on how YOU use your truck .. .. .. just food for thought

      Have an etorque hemi Ram, it’s a cool operating system. Engine shuts off at lights and you barely flinch coming off the brake and it instantaneously sends power to the engine launching the vehicle forward initially. However I would not suggest buying any advanced technology vehicle without buying extra warranty packages. Adds to the overall vehicle cost obviously.

      I test drove one deciding on if I wanted to trade my 19 classic for a 2021 nbs. There is major difference in torque response adding this. It will drift around a corner from a stop and do donuts. Also with traction control off it will spin the tires and fish tail even driving at 20 mph. I just did all this yesterday. Now. Overall I will keep my all steel body. The doors and bed feel cheap since they are now going to aluminum. I'm not sure exactly what all is aluminum but if you see the door panel vibrate when you close the door that's a no thank you. Also I'm 6'4" and the seat position in order for me to have the seat all the way back is a no. You have to have the seat all the way down in order for it to be all the way back and when you do that you feel like you are in a car. When I drive my truck I like to have the seat all the way up and back that way I can see around me better

    I have a 2020 Silverado and a 2021 Ram. The 5.3 in the Silverado does the restart using the starter motor. The Ram Hemi uses the e-Torque motor for the restart. The Ram restart after auto-stop is noticeably quieter and smoother than the Silverado restart.

    So I just traded in a 2020 Laramie quad cab and as far as I can tell it had 395 HP and 410 torque. Just bought a 2021 Laramie crew cab 5.7 etorque and the specs are the still 410 etorque. This video says it adds another 130 ft torque but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

    • @chadd587
      @chadd587 2 года назад

      It doesn't add anything. It bumps the motor out of it's low rpm deadzone. When it "bumps" the motor from a dead stop it turns the rear tire one half a turn before shutting back off and turning it back over to the engine. It doesn't run in conjunction with the 410 torque of r hemi. It shuts off as the motor builds power. It's not useful for truck reasons. It's for ritzy upper class folks that fantasize about being truck users as they drive from their gated community to their classy restaurant. Those people are what it's for. Not you or me

Dust and dirt infiltration into the electric motor/alternator unit probably played a significant role in failures that are very costly to repair.

      @thebighair37 7 лет назад +7

      Very possible. That is what keeps me from Fords Ecoboost too. The Ecoboost sounds WAY too expensive to repair, from what a friend with an F150 told me. Although this Dodge system is an add-on option where the motor can probably work without it. Ford's is dependent on the turbo-style eco-system just to run.

    • @SirtubalotTX
      @SirtubalotTX 7 лет назад +5

      What on Earth are you talking about "turbo-style eco-system"? huh..whaaaat? lol
      I think I understand what you are saying but not exactly. A engine with turbochargers is obviously going to be more complex than an engine without but that is not the whole picture: Ford's Ecoboost setup in the F150 has 2 fewer cylinders and typical repairs on it shouldn't cost more than on the 5.0,..sans the turbos and related hardware.
      That aside, I don't think this mild hybrid setup on the Dodge would work very well if it failed because he said that it also takes the place of the alternator. I guess if the 48 volt side of the system is charged up,.. you could go awhile but we'll have to see when this thing comes out. I would prefer to see the electric motors in hybrid setups in the transmission itself (like the Powersplit in Toyota Hybrids) but maybe this won't be as unreliable and costly to maintain as people think.
      One more thing, turbo engines CAN run with failed turbos. How do I know that? because its happened to me. lol.

    • @josephcottone9613
      @josephcottone9613 7 лет назад +6

      I guess only time will tell but there’s a good chance it will be reliable.
      People were afraid of the electronics in the Prius when it launched. My 2004 with 145k miles has been 100% reliable. It even has the original batteries.

    • @SirtubalotTX
      @SirtubalotTX 7 лет назад +2

      Indeed. The thing about that is MG1 and MG2 are in the transmission and bathed in oil to help keep them cool. I have read something that the oil seems to break down around the 60k mark and could cause the winding insulation on MG1 and MG2 to deteriorate. I never did look further into that but that's the gist. One of my cars happens to be a 17 Rav4 Hybrid (which I love) and if I wind up keeping it that long, I might chase that thought process further down the road. How often have you changed the oil in your transmission?
      Not sure about this setup in the dodge but I'm assuming that it is air cooled.

    • @josephcottone9613
      @josephcottone9613 7 лет назад

      I’m embarrassed to say my car has been neglected. Everything other than engine oil/filter, wiper blades, tires and air filter is original.
      Still, I’d get in it right now and trust it to go coast to coast.
      I do plan on changing spark plugs, fluids and brakes this year.
      Thanks for the tip about the trans fluid. I’ll have to look into that.
      I’ve read that the v8 eTorque is air cooled and the v6 is liquid cooled. Not sure why they did that.

    To call it a hybrid is a stretch. I have a 2022 pentastar v6 etorque. If it's on it operates like an EV when stop. Once you get going, it drops out somewhere between 1-2k rpm. Not really a significant gain in gas mileage. What I noticed is that if you don't wait a full 3 seconds or more after you come to a stop, the vehicle will give one hard jerk sometimes when you go to accelerate. Took it in for service at dealership and was told that is an inherent problem with the system. So far I'm at 30k with no other issues. Got my fingers crossed.

I was able to drive it for about three weeks and 1,340 miles, before the eTorque system went out, Vehicle spit and sputtered while driving, then died completely, and wouldn't fire up. It would crank, albeit slowly, but would not fire up. It has been in the ship for almost four weeks, and RAM cannot figure out how to fix it. The first replacement starter/motor/generator blew about 10 minutes after the tech installed it. Just this morning, the dealership was told to order the PCM, but doesn't believe that will solve my issue. Long-time Diamler-Chryslere, FCA, and Stellantis customer, but I have my severe doubts now.

      There is a 48V battery behind the back seat. It powers a large electric motor which is connected to the gasoline engine with a belt. It is used for both restarts and for torque assist of the gasoline engine. If I have it right the large electric motor recharges the 48V battery when it is not doing either of those two things. (Normal startups are still done with the conventional starter and 12V battery.)

      If the 48v battery fails it won't let the 12v crank the engine unless they have updated over the past couple years. Plenty of stories online about people having to have the truck towed to the dealership and the problem being the 48v battery being shorted with no other issues. Battery replacement and it's back to normal. The first years had customers without their truck for weeks because of a "shortage" of 48v batteries. They had the batteries but were sending very few to dealers for parts and using the rest on the assembly line.

    Sounds cool until it breaks! Being a Dodge it WILL break. Really cool engine but the break pedals fall off and the power steering fails. This is the state of vehicles in 2019. All this tech but the most simple things are faulty that they could have nailed 50 plus years ago. All emphasis goes into fuel economy and horsepower ratings and no emphasis is put into longevity or actual quality. And as expensive as it is, you just have to work the truck twice as hard now to pay it off consuming twice the fuel and exposing the driver to twice the crash risk even though there are state of the art airbags.

      tubeyourself It’s called Entropy. The tractor produced more crops but the tractor does not last forever. The change in the price of the crops equalizes the math to zero gain. A local delivery driver in 1935 made 15 stops a day with a $700 Ford panel truck that lasts five years and 50,000 miles. In 2019 they make 50 stops a day with a $35,000 Mercedes van that lasts 10 years and 500,000 miles. The change in price of getting something delivered evens out the math to exactly the same.

    I have to agree with some comments with OUT OF WARRANTY REPAIRS ! Firstly, what's the cost of 48V Batteries for this E-Torque system when you have to replace it ?? Secondly, what will it cost the consumer to fix an E-Torque system out of warranty ?? It's not like you can take the vehicle to a garage up the street OR around the corner and get it fixed at a discounted rate !! Definitely a dealer monopolized special repair that will cost the consumer a small fortune !! Their goes all the money you just saved in E-Torque fuel savings over the years in just one repair bill !! Accordingly, I always understood that most engine damage occurs when starting a fuel engine ?? These engines are now stopping & starting hundreds of times per day with this new E-Torque system ? I would just stay with the straight 5.7 L Hemi option without the E-Torque system !!
