We hoped that there would be little bit colder on the snow dump to escape the heat and don't sweat while filming :D Here is latest weather forecast to Tampere and it looks like we are going to sweat quite a lot for a while :D
www.foreca.fi/Finland/Tampere/10vrk
I presume all the sand is from them "gritting" the roads during winter? and as the snow melted the sand formed a layer over the top insulating the rest of the snow?
Also Tampere is a lovely place, I should have moved there long ago.
Chris Gough yes there is a lot of sand from the gritting so it most likely is what you described
Quick question. What is the small carriage at the back of the train? 8:55 8:56
Yeah! This summer has been really hot here in Sweden too (but I like it). I think the main reason it doesn't melt, is the thick layer of dirt and sand that forms on top of the huge pile of snow, as the first part of it melts away. That does a lot when it comes to insulate the snow from the hot air and sun light from above and makes it melt slower and slower.
@Brad Griffin That's the actual train or the engine. The other carriages were just normal double decker passenger carriages.
"What do you do in summer vacation in Finland?". "We build snow castles"
One does not simply walk into Mordor. One takes one's bicycle.
Tampere is making glacier to fight global warming
Hey, found the dump and your place on Google Earth. That pile is huge. I never knew your shop was in a tightly packed neighborhood. You must get along with your neighbors to be able to do all the stuff there. You two give be a lot of laughs.
At least one of the snow dumps in our city (at about 53 degrees N) still has a a deep mountain of grit covered snow. Sometimes it lasts until September.. The sand and rock chips do an annoying job of insulating the pile. :) At least we get to screen and re-use the girt, as the snow dump is on the same giant lot as the concrete and asphalt recycling yard, where they make aggregate for fixing the roads.
The trains are very dangerous- do you have plans to deal with them?
You dont have to deal with VR; Usually, the train is very late, or dont run at all because its too hot/cold, dry/wet, or because of the positions of another planets in our galaxy or something ..

It's amazing how everything is so open in Finland, if there was a snow dump site in the uk it would be surrounded with 8ft razor wire fence.
Andrew Stevens it would be weird if everything wasn't so open here
In Finland we have this thing called common sense.
Oy you got a permit for that snow mate
Very interesting on the snow dump! A time lapse video would be very interesting. If it doesnt all melt and you keep getting alot of snow each winter you may have a permanent glacier in your back yard!
I totally agree, that video would be very interesting. Long term projects like that are incredible!
I wonder if that spot has developed a layer of permafrost.
Anne-droid Maybe. I think most of Finland has bedrock close to the surface so the soil might not be very thick. Maybe someone from Finland can check me on this?? That is just what I remember from somewhere. I may be wrong??
Herbert Susmann Yes you're mostly right though some northern parts of the country actually have permafrost soil. Finnish winters usually make damage to the roads as the frozen soil starts melting during spring. But yes, the soil isn't that thick and underneath the bedrock is rising a couple of centimeters or so each year as it recovers from the weight of the ice age glacier.
Winter: Shoveling snow because they have to
Summer: Shoveling snow because they *want* to
You should get metal detector and earch for treasures that people lost during winter, that could be awesome content
That would be a really good place for detecting!
It would be interesting to do a bit of metal detecting.
If it's snow from all over the city there could be all sorts in there.
We tried that last summer but there is too much of litter to find anything. Lot of steel scrap and if you ignore them you will find soda can opening things :D
I was wondering how much money could be in there.
Drag a magnet across it! See what kind of neat stuff you can pick up.
My friend has found some 20€ bill etc. and a pretty good quality flashlight without a metal detector.
Good idea. If you want to find needle in a hay stack, burn the hay stack (or melt the snow).
You guys somehow are able to make digging a hole interesting. I don't know how you do it.
The hole is Finnish. That's why.
7:33 did he just say 'slav squat'? lol
I love the finns :0 even though its blazing summer, they have to find a cold hole to sit haha love em..peace from the uk :)))
I feel your pain, we've had the same heat in the UK, and like you we don't have household AC.
Maybe you should ask them to dump some snow on your side of the tracks next year, and you can loop coolant pipes through it and build your own home AC system :D
That seems like a good idea actually
"yeah that's, uh, really pretty" lol
Lauri i feel sorry for you guys without AC. Here in Serbia we had 40c a few times and -25c in winter is not unusual... But i would still prefer more cold than hot. Easier to warm up than cool down
I'm in Texas, temperatures here yesterday was 103F (or 39.4C). We get by okay, I even work outside. But winter here is sometimes 32F (0C), rarely does it ever go below.
I'm already sweating if it's 80f, so I gotta have my AC.
I think I was meant to live in Antarctica, lol.
We had 56.5 celsius termical sensation a few weeks ago where I live, we were the hottest city in the World, summers are horrible in here.
Holy shit thats 133 in F, can't imagine the Air actually being painful. Only thing I suffer with in Florida is the stupid Humidity. Last night it was 85 at 9pm and humidity was 99%
Texas and Florida ain’t got jack over Arkansas It was 38c here with 70% humidity it’s expected to last 2-3 more weeks.it feels like 44-47c you cannot cool down.
Fun Video !
A year long timelapse video would be super awesome !!
The episode we've all been waiting for!!
That is now the world's most famous snow pile.
I've come to the realization that I will watch anything on youtube as long as it is short and I'm subscribed to it.
I can also still see snow from my house. cheers from the alps!
You guys have awesome looking trains!! 🚂 🚊 🚞
Moi Anni ja Lauri! Cool video, surprised how much snow there still is. Keep cool in Tampere! 👍👏🏻😊🍦
Love the fat tire bikes! Fun to ride on the beach!! It will melt mostly., and love you guys!!
I just love watching your shows 😃 thanks again
Happy summer from Canada!
Hey guys...loving it already
Its like Siberia, the ice never melts! And that is a compliment to Tampere...
"oh ho it's moving!" that was a good reaction!
Yay, good to see that you are smart people that wear helmets when riding your bikes!
Taking a walk on a beautiful 26C evening and enjoying how cool it feels here!
That is one chill cat!
I love that natural snow dump site! ha
Yes, do time lapse of a year. Would be really interesting! Hello from Kentucky, USA. Love your content!
Leoko moved his paw and instantly overheated.
I'm very thankful I have an AC unit again. The old one hung on barely through the record heatwave in May and then crapped out in June, finally got a new one. Fresh 18C with moving air inside, ahh. :D
That's one big snowdump. A lot of lumisota to be had there, just clean the gravel. Unless you're hardcore, and Finnish.
you need to drop the hot steel slug on the mountain! lol
Bryan Turton brother...
That is so insane, I heard about snowdump sites from you the first time. It seems so unbelievable that there is stored snow in Finland during summer.
Well, it's not exactly stored on purpose any more. Back when refrigerators were not commonplace, people used to saw big chunks of ice out of lakes and store it in sawdust, for the purpose of keeping food cool during the summer.
This is only 3 years late, but here in Wisconsin, by Lake Michigan we have just revived an old festival, Snowfest in Two Rivers. Quote: The origins of Snowfest begin when a group of workers in the city uncovered a four-by-ten-foot mound of snow, in the middle of summer, no less. Since then, the city has used this historic moment as a reason to celebrate. Thus, July 24, 1937, kicked off the very first Snowfest. In fact, back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, the town would crown a Snow Queen. I remember during the parade city workers would throw snow out of the back of a dump truck. We had at the time wood working plants that would dump the saw dust over the snow piles to keep the snow until July's parade. Good times!
Snow dump would be great to cool houses during the summer. With tubes through it and a simple fan, great airco.
Here in Ottawa, Canada, we are at about the same latitude, so our weather is similar. It can be -30C to -40C in the winter, and 30C to 40C in the summer (which is much shorter than the winter). We also have snow dumps, and the snow stays there for the summer as well (I haven't been that close to it, but I have a good view from my office at work). This was really fun to watch, I've always wanted to dig in it in the summer.
Another great episode! I love this kind of content!
Here in Anchorage, we have the same thing. Snow dump sites to pile up the snow that gets scraped up from parking lots and such. They turn ugly and brown, but they do melt away. It's interesting to see your piles too.
looks like Mordor.. LOL.. thats awesome
I've seen some people put snow in closed places with fans, so in the summer, they use the snow-cooled aire for AC, and they send the hot air to the compartment to be recooled.
Also, any video with the cats is always a good one! :D
Hi. I tried some Maku Laku Licorice from Finland. Very nice. Found in a shop near me in New Zealand.
Very cool video! I'm from Red Deer, Canada, in fall of 2014 one of our snow dump sites still had a massive pile of snow that never melted. The snow fell and winter came, the snow "mountain" finally melted away by fall of 2015.
"Famous Finnish couple demolishes snow dump site of Tampere"
Really good
Can't wait for 2020 when that documentary comes out!
We have similar piles in Sweden, one of them is used for cooling a hospital in the summers.
its not going to melt before winter , thanks for sharing
Many years ago the City of Chicago had a problem with many heavy snow falls. They put snow everywhere. In Lake Michigan, the Chicago River, in parks and still there was too much. Then somebody had a great idea. They filled an empty coal train, these trains are big, like a hundred cars and sent it to Florida so the kids there could play in the snow!
thanks for the video!
I think this is one of the most unique videos i have seen, and i have seen many.
thanks for doing something that i have always wanted to do - climb on top of a big snow pile in the summer and dig a hole! lol. i'm glad i don't live near where you live because i think i would be on top of those mounds during most of the summer, just digging holes and playing in the snow. (yeah, i know. it's dirty snow)
I don't think the snow will melt because the layer of sand is too great, and it insulates the snow too much.
:) cool videos. Thank you very much for sharing. A 1-year Timelapse would be really cool. sometimes I do small things like that myself. I was on a solo trip around Orbyhus in Sweden in Jan, Feb, March and took pictures and Videos from the same places. its amaziing to see how things change. All the best to you and your Families.
And as KiT said -- More Cold More better. (or so :) ) actually we have here locally 27,7 C, and ~40% Humidity :(
Michael, Zehlendorf Berlin, Germany
now you can shovel snow all year long! :)
You guys are an awesome couple. I am a new fan
Love your videos
With those wildfires looking like they may reach Finland you might want to donate a truck load or two to melt down for a fire barrier! lol ! Great video!
I love these videos :) ty
Do a thermite reaction on the snow dump : ).
Im pretty sure there is a huge two part video in you destroying the snow in the name of science and massive comedy😂👍🏻, awesome channel. I never miss now🙏🏻👍🏻
Everywhere else: permafrost melts
Finland: makes their own permafrost
YOU GUYS ARE NUTS! I love you!
Best shovel ever
best extra content ever!
Very interesting. The beginning of the Tampere Glacier ... It will not melt now.
The trains in Finnland are much more beautiful then they in Germany :)
We had snow dump sites in Michigan where I grew up. It wouldn't melt completely during the summer so they would alternate sites every year. That way the snow had 2 summers to melt.
This kind of gravel and sand slack deposit over ice is exactly what we would expect to find on the surface of distant worlds in the Solar System like Ceres or Callisto. That's why I find this video particularly interesting.
Finally got to watch you guys squat in a hole!
The snow can be little bit below zero because of road salt.
Not in Finland, they don't use road salt!
Yes we do sometimes
We use too much road salt... Cars will rust very fast because long winters and so much road salt
The snow can be any temperature below zero. Zero is the phase transition point, not the only temperature allowed.
apburner1 He took the temp of an exposed patch. Given the temp of the air, the shallowness of the pile, and the exposure to sun, it is likely to be freezing-point depression.
If you get lots of rain and warm weather for the remainder of the summer the pile will get smaller but wont disappear. If you just get the heat, the layer of sand will insulate the snow and it will not get much smaller. The more snow that melts, the more sand is produced on the top which gives the show more insulation, keeping it colder below. Rain will penetrate the insulation and cause the snow below to melt.
Snow fort in the summer!
If it was melting fast, I think the ground surrounding it would be a lot wetter so I say no, not going to completely melt. And your cats are beautiful.
You can send some of that extra snow to me, it won't last long here where it is nearly 110 F. I really like you crazy guys and the videos.
Since snowpile is taken from all local roads it is probably concentrating precious metals like platinum from catalytic converters very much and you could pan for them in the runoff like cody did with his street sweepings.
geez ! Finland looks just like Pennsylvania !
Hitto minkä lumilinnan tuonne saisi! Ja kuten sanoit, täydellinen terassi!
Siinäpä jollekin bisnesidea, helteiden ajaksi lumi kahvila.
That is a pretty cat.
That is awesome. We have the same things here in Canada in the cities, they have to remove the snow the same way because in the cities there is not enough room. But in my town we have ample room since I live in a farming community.
I love your cats they are so cute!. It seems that the city should find a place out of the city limits to dump snow!.
Currently in Texas the temperature is 104°F/40°C and the heat index is even higher. We need that snow pile here.
Dude! Metal detect that place! There could be soooo many coins and stuff!
and even more steel scrap and soda can openers :D We tried last year
Pyroboy Cody's Lab would probably extract all the tungsten from it (from studded winter tires)
5:38 watch out a wild turkey approaches!! 🦃
When I was a kid, the snow dump sites in spring were good places for finding empty cans and bottles, money and other stuff.
Try using a spade shovel or rounded shovel. It'll get a deeper hole and it'll be easier. Great video though!
You guys are lucky. Here in Ireland, we always have shit weather. Spring - rain, summer - warm rain, autumn - cold rain, winter - very cold rain.
Safety first!
If it's going to rain a lot in the summer it could all melt. If not then I think it'll survive till next winter.
Cool Finnish trains!
Rad that you mentioned Colin Furze in your video. You guys should do a video together, would be super cool to see what you both could build!
I love this channel
cats so cute
A time lapse would be awesome!
As for my prediction: I'll guess that it won't melt all the way. Hopefully the snow removal guys keep piling on the snow year after year and then eventually you'll be able to go snowboarding all year round.
Yes it's still insanely hot and dry. In Germany we again had 30°C around 20th of September and still no reasonable rainfall since july. And also no reasonable snow dump anywhere ! xD
If all the snow don't melt away by the end of summer it's just gonna refreeze into ice (rather than snow) when winter comes!
that's how the last ice age begun...
From Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA -- Snow in the shady areas of Pikes Peak can last into July. But that is no surprise at the top of a 14,115 foot (4200 meters) high mountain. It has been in the 90's (F) here in the city. Very hot.
