    Here in Belgium, a team of renowned scientists did their own research and testing with regard to safety head gear. Their conclusion was remarkable: it turned out that the safest thing to wear to protect your head were caps, bonnets, berets and other head gear made from wool or cotton. They concluded this after dropping a safety helmet and a beret from a height of 30 meters. The safety helmet was broken but the beret was still intact.....

      @@HydraulicPressChannel Yeah. Since ballistic helmet and crash helmet have completely different uses. As you said being collapsed by press isn't exactly what either of the helmet types are designed for. Though interesting still.
      Ballistic helmet absolutely must be as strong as possible. Since the purpose is to stop or deflect projectiles. However usually the projectiles aren't massive enough to cause crash type problems (massive accelerations, momentum shifts), since the projectiles those are designed for are small mass. Small mass high speed. Massive amounts of kinetic energy for piercing and deforming etc. , but not as much momentum (E=m*v**2/2 vs p=mv). So hold firm and deflect or stop the projectile, make it expend it's kinetic energy trying to reform the ballistic protection.
      If the projectile is massive enough to cause momentum shift problems (bang the head around inside the helmet/ fling the whole head and helmet around on the neck).... Well bye bye, lower the curtains, just got hit by a tank cannon directly or something. Helmet won't help.
      Where as crash helmet is for momentum threats mostly. Larger mass (the head itself) experiencing accelerations. Accelerations is the killer here. Hence for example the HANS device on racing drivers, prevent the heads from having massive acceleration that snap the neck.
      Usually such collisions are against solid objects (the ground, a wall, a tree trunk etc.), so there is no holding firming and pushing the crash away. So instead break and buy time. That is most important. The longer the crash takes deforming the helmet, the smaller the accelerations involved. Thus less chances of concussions and so on. Same as with car crash crumble zones. Massive looking carnage, but for a reason. The deforming takes energy and most importantly time.

    • @StreakyBaconMan
      @StreakyBaconMan 5 лет назад +47

      They're not really designed to break so much as compress more on the outside while staying the same dimensions on the inside where your head is. I have been in accident where a helmet saved my life and it did not break apart, but it did get crushed on the outside and not on the inside. Also the last two helmets are not supposed to withstand something like vehicle accident, but to stop a projectile like a bullet penetrating.

  • @mostababa3067
    @mostababa3067 4 года назад +98

    As a disclaimer; the force the helmet can withstand has almost nothing to do with how well it protects your skull in an accident. The purpose of the helmet IS to break at impact such that your skull does not - it acts as a shock absorber.
    So, take the result with a grain of salt. The weakest helmets here may still be great shock absorbers, and hence still good helmets (for their designated purposes).

    • @ZevVeli
      @ZevVeli 5 лет назад +38

      So you're right but also not right. So The bicycle helmet withstood a force of I'd say about 800 kg (7.8 kN) before it started to fail. Which translates to the average European adult (70.8 kg) experiencing an acceleration of 110 m/s^2 which if riding at an average speed of 15.5 km/h (4.3 m/s) would be a crash that takes 0.04 seconds to come to a complete stop all directed at the head. As to the motorcycle helmet, while it began to deform early, the force was displaced around the entire shape and left the head intact until around (I'd estimate) 1500 kg (14 kN) which for an average adult at Finnish highway speeds of 50 km/h (13.89 m/s) would be an accident that would bring them to a complete stop at around 0.06 seconds. So the Smashinator would be like testing the penetrating power of a bullet by shooting it at wet cardboard.

    Motorcycle helmets are definitely affected by age. The plastics break down which is why it’s recommended you replace them every five years. More often if left in direct sunlight.
    I replace mine every other year (I’m a commuter, so my helmets see a lot more abuse than your regular fair-weather rider). Also, some helmets are built different than others, so get a ‘true’ read on what motorcycle helmets take could be tricky.

    Helmet are not made for hydraulic test...
    It would not be wise to buy a helmet based upon the hydraulic pressure that it can handle.
    Motorcycle helmet are made in such a way that they are soft and provide safety at the same time. If a person riding a bike at 60kmph met with accident then the flexibility (softness) of the helmet becomes crucial as it absorbs the majority of the shock.
    If someone wore a hard metal helmet then it won't serve the purpose as all the shock will be transferred to Neck, shoulders, head...

    Forget about the HALO. Next Season, every formula 1 Driver will be equipped with army helmets

    • @timsmith618
      @timsmith618 5 лет назад +3

      Except strongest does not mean safest. F1 crash helmets are designed to reduce the g load on the driver's head in a crash, while the army helmets are not. And in my personal opinion, the halo doesn't look that bad, and it will look much better in 2021 when it's better integrated into the car (see gen 2 Formula E cars for sort of what I mean). They don't look amazing now because they're effectively bolted on.

    I think the expensive bike helmet actually started to flatten out around 80-100Kg before the cabbage started to break where as the c heap bike helmet had the cabbage start to break around 120Kg and then the helmet only started to deform and break around 380-500Kg. That makes sense because expensive bike helmets like that are designed to break in a way that slows you down and dissipates energy, you want the helmet to break. Think about this, if a 100Kg person lands on their head it is going to have at least a 100Kg force on it and would want the helmet to crumble not their skull or spine. The "best" helmets actually crush the easiest but do so in a controlled manner, notice how the specialized helmet was completely destroyed but was still held together?

    • @theschwiftyman8840
      @theschwiftyman8840 5 лет назад

      Yeah just like the crumple zone of a car. In a car accident the front of the vehicle works as a.....pillow. When the car get an impact it starts to crumple. The reason for that is because its trying to absorb most of the energy. If(imagine) the car was 100% made of hardened steel, it would barely crumple, so the impact(in Newton) on you wouldn't be reduced which means it would be very very likely to die from a 40mph crash. The faster you hit an object the bigger the impact, the crumpling slows you down.
      My English isn't perfect but you'll get the point. I find these thing fascinating, there so much more to it than "oh yeah...the thing broke because it took a hit". I love physics

    • @LiborTinka
      @LiborTinka 5 лет назад

      Exactly. There must be a deformation zone to absorb the impact. Something has to break and better be it the helmet than one's head...

      THIS, this so much. This is cool and fun to watch and you never say anything about safety...but you SHOULD. This whole thing without any mentions as to actual safety is incredibly careless bordering on negligent. Anyone wearing a skull cap on a motorcycle might as well be wearing nothing and this seems to say the opposite...you really need a disclaimer. I've known people who lost their lives based on motorcycle accidents and this, without some sort of notification, is getting pretty close to offensive and criminal.
