Love to see the Linjett 39 win! ❤ Family Gustavsson fully deserve some recognition for their really fine family cruisers throughout the years and lately their latest models are breathtakingly beautiful. They are a very common sight in the Stockholm archipelago, specifically in the outer islands, and the reason is that if you own one you tend to use it quite a lot.
Oh, I'd wondered where Matt had gone, now I've found him lurking on RUclips. I've been reading him for years, now he's here. Got another subscriber now.
Beautiful boats, cool kit, nice show, exemplary commentary..looking at all that one would never imagine a brutal war taking place just a few kilometers down the autobahn, eh?
These "European Yacht of the Year" awards are a bit like "I scratch your back, you scratch mine". I guess the biggest criteria winning one is a model of a company with a big advertising budget as coincidentally the jury consists of representatives from yachting magazines. Already enough of bad smells?
Simply not true - I served as a jury member for 10 years and the effort that goes into selecting the right boat on its merits alone take many days of sea trials, hours and hours of debate and discussion as well as having very strict rules for nominees and judges alike. Every one of the judges is an enthusiastic and experienced sailor in their own right. Together they represent a huge pool of experience and expertise. I’ve been there, I’ve seen it and I’m sorry but you’re simply wrong and the suggestion of bad smells is unfair and unfounded
I can't talk for sailing boats but in the awards for the "European Powerboat of year x" for example how come Sirena models are not nominated? Even though they have put the trawler-design on the map, they are not nominated but those of `me too` models of Beneteau... Come on!
At 0:26, sorry Matt but as you were there you must have heard a lot of Germans pronounce 'Boot Dusseldorf' or 'Das Boot' (like the movie), but none of them would have made it sound like footwear! It is pronounced more like we pronounce 'bought' or 'bort'. I know we can't always pronounce things as the locals would, but 'The Boot Show'! :)
Wood is really not practical to build or maintain commercially in the modern world. However Aluminum should have more use. Steel for work boats is excellent.
Thanks much Matt and Toby. It's refreshing to see some of the new ideas in the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 55, Sunbeam, etc. The Beneteau First 36 may look plain but the performance sounds outstanding. That all said, much more interested in multihulls here. It's definitely good that recycling is being taken more seriously. Aluminum is highly recycled.
Matt did a fabulous job with Toby's interview, so knowledgeable, both. Loved the new 30's and all. Thanks so much for the tour, hope to be there next year.
The winning sailboats are interesting in that they are highly performance oriented. This means they can sail fast, even upwind. The price for this is very vulnerable appendages, such as the rudder(s) and keel. They are short and deep. A keel or rudder strike at speed can mean a disastrous repair bill.
Interesting that they are usually monohulls. Having spent many years on monos and then a few years ago swapping to a multi it's clear to me that the multi is a much better option in just about every aspect.
They may be better for YOUR taste, Shane, but your taste is not the same as everyone else's. We all have different desires and likes, and just as you and I may not like living in the same sort of house or going on the same sort of holiday, we can like different styles of boats. Oh, and my family started cat sailing in 1966 so I'm very well aware of their many merits.
I’ve owned several boats and been sailing for 45 years. I’ve rigged and delivered boats. Apart from the gee whiz of new boats and techs what the boating industry needs is an approach where every piece of every boat is not unique. To be accessible and affordable boat manufacturers need production, service schedules and warranties/ Hyundai changed motoring - when will their boating counterpart emerge?
@@Tomm9y Suspect it is intended to get you off the mooring, pontoon plus non-propulsion needs. As aimed at lake sailors not going to be doing passages under engine. Back up for no wind.
I'm all for more recyclable material but the idea that the owner of a thirty year old boat is going to be trading for a new boat, with the recycling of resin being a significant factor is laughable.
Agree, I suspect most buyers of new boats are selling a 5-10 year boat. More practically, the salvage value of a very older boat will be sufficient to have it removed from the water and scrapped. Will stop boats being abandoned (marinas are weary of boat owners doing a runner leaving behind an old GRP boat which will cost the marina to get rid of and recover the berth).
@@donshackley5244 Which is why it's better to be able to recycle the materials, no? It means there's enough value left to make recycling worthwhile, AND new techniques are needed to make them recyclable.
@@LoanwordEggcorn Agreed, it always better to use materials or production processes that result in a potentially recyclable product. However, there is often a lot of green washing in this area. Big PR claims that the environment is being helped which will never be achieved in practice unless the recycling is economically as well as technically. Yachts are big expensive things to move to a recycling point ( which is unlikely to be near the expensive marinas/land that the yacht is in at time of disposal).
@@donshackley5244 Agree there is much greenwashing, so I hope some actual improvements are being made. Also agree it's very difficult to actually recycle economically. However there are industries where recycling is a major part of how they work today: Lead acid batteries, some steel, some aluminum, some plastic, though less for plastic. I personally am interested in Aluminum hulls for recyclability and corrosion resistance.
I work for a jeanneau dealer and still have old boats in yard will be nice to be able to reuse it to build a new on haven't seen the 55 in the states yet
The ultimate "sustainability" behavior is to use what you got for as long as you can. Everything else is pretentious marketing strategies that follow moronic trends of an era. The only good thing about these is the fact that new technologies enter the court to compete with existing technologies. Some of these are here to stay, but not all.
A good report but the "boot" is no longer the only place for watersports enthusiasts to see the highlights. Local shows will take up the slack. The level of the show has been dropping for at least 20 years.
Indeed great that Toby was here but placing him in the same category of "Nick from Aquaholic" who gives a tour of boats like real estate realtors giving apartment tours? Come on!
Not my kind of boat show. This was a manufacturer's show, not a boater's show. Very impersonal and certainly not geared to the average boater and their needs. Each builder cordoned off their boats to the general crowd, allowing only those who were first vetted to board. A lot of money was poured into displays, and the pressure to sell was palpable. I won't go again.
When I see these "ships", I don't know if I cry tears of laughter or anger. Since the designers, the controllers have the dictation over the shipbuilding it is getting worse and worse. Attached spade rudders, with thin polyester shells and a polyurethane hard foam core, bolted keels and best of all a sail drive as a drive. Wonderful attachments to produce a marine emergency at the slightest collision. Where should this madness lead? In the past, functionality, safety and seaworthiness determined the shape. Today it is exactly the other way around. And the maritime press still gives this nonsense a platform, probably just to make ads business. One hand washes the other ?
Not one decent cruising yacht. Lovely electronics to get full of salt and pack up in some remote place. Caravans! , give me a boreal anyday over this junk.
any boat that is not in the final color of gelcoat, that boat is crap. All boats today are arranged to look nice to the eye, and we know that this is not quality. After 5 years of polishing and damage, that boat has to be completely repainted, while gelcoat is better quality and more resistant, even after 20 years the gelcoat gives shine and quality.
Thank you for the interesting coverage. I think this is the most interesting coverage I have seen so far. And the Toby talk was a big bonus!

LOL, yes, I agree with your thoughts and opinions. Didn't expect to see your comment here. How are you doing? I'm Jesse, do you remember?🤣
Boot is insane. Those are exactly the boats that caught my eye as well…plus the Swan 55! Awesome behind the scenes look at the show. Thanks Matt!
Great show you always do a wonderful job always nice to see Toby
Well done. Keep it up.
Nice to see the chat with aToby.

interesting and enjoyable reporting-thanks very much-

Great job Matt Sheahan!!
Beautifull ships ! Thank the lord I am happy with my Coronado30 wich does 6.5 knots upwind and 8.5 downwind !in the Salish Sea.

Many of the winners though are not from big brands with big marketing budgets which suggests the opposite.
Well done, Matt.

The David Attenborough of yacht commentators, love it.
Bad analogy, Attemborough has reduced the quality of his work to "pathetic".
Fabulous effort.
Great reviews and thoughts. Thanks.

1 solar panel to charge the battery is like filling a wheelbarrow with a teaspoon, an impractical gimick.

Cool stuff. Trying to convince the wife we should go.
Great video and also agree it was nice to see Toby too. Looking forward to your other content soon.
Why doesn't any builder put a platypus bill bow on a sailboat?

I thought this was a sailing yacht but I didn’t see much sail in there.
What’s the mass in the keel? We’ll see if any boat like that real I er deliver!
That Sunbeam is cool looking but the lack of bulkheads and the induction hob make me think it was designed by someone who's never been in a seaway
Apparently it's for European lakes. Mind you only 8kw of battery won't get you far, particularly with the wind on the nose.

The obvious reason Linjett is not that known abroad is that they have enough customers in Sweden to keep them busy.
Linjett is very well regarded in Sweden. Very good sailing capability and top quality. Secondhand prices keeps very high, even for now very old ones.
