Once the crimp is finished the tool doesn't automatically release. I don't know why they designed it this way because your idea is better, however it is the way it is. The release knob must be used. Perhaps it is so you can store the tool in the closed position without needing a separate locking mechanism to keep it closed.

Perhaps you're not squeezing hard enough. Mine certainly does automatically release. It was purchased from a different source, but it's definitely the same tool. I've used dozens of other type ratcheting crimpers as well and they all automatically release. You can easily store the tool at the last click before release.

Why on Earth would he use the ratchet release knob before the crimp was finished? The release knob is for aborting a crimp or to release a jammed tool. At the end of the crimp cycle, the ratchet will automatically release.
