Great root system starting. Tree top looking good. Potting in new home will give the root system a nice start.

Thanks for this - really interesting to watch and you were very caring for that ant colony. Good thing too...I was already getting my shoes on to slap a protection order on that tree :)

That's going to make a cracking twin trunk yew. I've never tried Yew for air layering. Can you remember when you started the layer, what month, I'm also in the UK. You answered my question at the end of the video, thanks, great result. I shall have a go next spring.

Thank Murphy, I actually moved this tree on regrettably as I lost some space. But the process of air layering was a success. I’d say yew of this thickness (couple of inches an inch say) you can expect roots in the first 3-4 months. If you started really early march/ April you may just get it off the parent in the first season. Potted on in moss or a really well drained soil and a sheltered spot. Hope this helps

I wonder if the moss would come off better if you did the root ball under water.

The ants certainly would but I find the Moss is easiest just damp/wet you tend to find a route around it easier than when it water logged. Its heavier and tends to grip to the roots and surrounding Moss and roots break very easily as this stage!

Dear Sam, what an amazing masterclass on so many levels! God bless you for the gentle care you took with the ants, many people would have hosed them off! Two lovely specimens for the future, well spotted in the first place, n skillfully dealt with. We’re blessed to have you on YT 🙏✝️ ✌️🇷🇺☮️🇺🇦✌️

Thank you Gaye! They did well to start a colony in that layer even if it was a pain in the backside! Hopefully they have a chance in the hedgerow probably come back to bite me haha but it’s there planet too! 🌱😊

After I messaged you after part I I got a yew. Piece of fencing I think, 3ft high. I've wired all the branches in different directions. Hoping for the best.

When did you begin this air layer (month)? How long did it take to create that rootball?

Early spring buds were swelling didn’t take long maybe 4/5 months tops roots grew really well after separating also. I’d say a favourable species for AirLayering

Hi there these took around 4/5 months and was a fair thickness 11/2 2 inch pieces should take fairly quick. The separated layer continued to push lots of new roots. A good species for AirLayering easily.
