  • Finding good Taxus material is hard, so I am using nursery stock to build shohin bonsai or pre-bonsai. In this video I hard prune a basic nursery stock yew in order to stimulate compact growth. I talk about material selection, preparation, timing the work for maximum success, and aftercare [1].

    Most parts of the yew are poisonous, and consumption of the foliage can result in death. BREATHING IN YEW SAWDUST CAN KILL YOU.

      Toxicity is sometimes overrated. But horses get really sick from a few branches. Do not breathe in the pollen. On the other side: the fleshy part of the berry is delicious, but spit out the seed.

      Zen Bonsai oh goodness 😂 yew is toxic but it takes about 3-4months of exposure to the elements of the plants sawdust to create a noticeable effect of sickness you’ll generally get symptoms of a lung infection and if you continue to be exposed to it you’ll die of lung fluid build up. But it isn’t as serious and scary as it’s made out to be.

    Nice looking stock. That’s a beautiful trunk. Had it been repotted in that soil or did you purchase it as a pre bonsai? Most Yews available at nurseries here in the states are multi trunk bushes.

    I would probably be a bit more patient with the chop and airlayer the top. But then again, I am a cheapskate.

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  4 года назад

      Haha! I know what you mean, I would if it had some quality - age, movement or features. But a straight section of that thickness can be found for very little money saving a year 👍

      @@grobonsai That's a great idea! I have a number of trees (junipers and thujas) that I used to grow as topiary, but a few years ago started turning them into bonsai. I managed to get nice short branches, but some of the trees still have two or three trunks growing where I don't want them. I thought of airlayering them this year, but they are straight. On the one hand, that could still give me more trees, on the other hand, I could do both! Twist them and airlayer them at the same time! And I could go really bold with the twisting, because I don't want those trunks in the first place! I really hadn't thought of that. Thank you for the idea.

    What a waste, why not air layering?

    • @grobonsai
      @grobonsai  3 года назад

      It’s a straight pole, cheaply available. To air layer would cost a year of development of the lower material
