The word you're looking for is: vapid
I told people it was
“scatterbrained.”
It’s also a good word to apply to this girl as a reviewer. No intelectual power.
@@barboralitvanova5111 she’s my sister
On the contrary, she explained herself eloquently.
@@mikea.6121 sure she explained her ignorant points well. She can communicate, well done! I’m sure for the ones with less brain power it is enough.
These people don't seem to realize that ALL nominees for the "best actress" Oscar are WOMEN, right....? Also, way to take a SHIT on America Ferraro for not celebrating HER nomination for Barbie!
It’s not about the other women nominated, it’s about Ryan being nominated for a role that people believe is not Oscar worthy and snubbing Margot’s performance.
And it’s America Ferrera, not Ferraro
Except Ferrera is barely in the film and delivers arguably the cringiest and least subtle monologue in film history, at least Margot had a character to play
the difference is, barbie was a movie about feminism and it was snubbed. its not hard to understand.
@@lukesouthern3640the movie got 8 nominations, more than all but 3 movies released last year. Just because you were given 1 cupcake instead of 2 doesn’t mean that you’re being starved.
Spider man across the spider verse was the best film of the year and it didn’t get shit except the yearly reminder that animation is not viewed as important by the academy. So don’t be spoiled because your film at least got something.
Stanley Kubrick never won Best Director. Stanley Kubrick. I'm supposed to lose sleep over Greta Gerwig?
A german reviewer said it actually perfectly in his podcast. Barbie is actually only a message for Twitter feminists with a little bit of a movie in it, and that it actually divides Society rather than bringing it together…
That's deep.
I don't think it was ever trying to bring society together.
@@austinbaker8042 the tag line of the movie or at least the trailer was: „If you Love Barbie you‘re gonna love this movie and if you hate Barbie you‘ll also love this movie.“

@@Waaagh40KRed no not him, the reviewer I was referring to isn't a english speaking reviewer
Regardless of what we all think about "Barbie," at least we can all agree that the LA Times columnist who said Academy members should be pushed out a window is truly psychotic.
Yeah it's really not that serious. At the end of the day, it's just an awards show
Seriously? Wow, the gall of these people. Wanting to kill people over a flippin' movie? Isn't that truly empowering. On the second note, it does seem to fit with the current standards of empowerment: it's either my way or get thrown out the window way.
@@anonme_ yeah that's kind of a MO of a certain Russian dictator...ironically fitting for the people who demand that we need to be moving toward a more compassionate and empathetic world and all that lol
Do they want to start a war in Europe?
My favorite part in all of this is that everyone claiming that Baribie was snubbed is conviently ignoring the fact that America Ferrera was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
They're saying that Robbie and Gerwig got snubbed, not the movie as a whole.
@@maryjaneshoe-fm4yrwhich is in itself hilarious in a way because both women are being nomiated for the Oscars for making the movie. Gerwig for writing it and Robbie for producing it.
the position of supporting actress isnt as threatening to the academy as the main character of the movie or of the director. the fact that they were both snubbed its what grabs the attention.
@@lukesouthern3640threatening to the academy? The nominations are voted on by their colleagues. Acting nominations are decided by the members who are actors and Best Director is voted on by other directors. I know it’s fun and easy to believe there’s some nefarious shadow cabal picking on poor Greta, but it just ain’t the case.
But Ryan is nominated as support actor not a main one@@lukesouthern3640
Barbie is basically a 30 minute movie that just ends. It goes off the rails so much after that and becomes just a bunch of scenes incoherently edited together.
You like Boogie Nights?
There’s a rumor that that’s how the movie was edited
I think you helped me finally figure out why I could never seem to wrap my head around this movie. It's because the movie itself can't figure out what it wants to be. Is Ken an incel who's too entitled to Barbie's affection or just a lovable idiot she takes for granted? Was Barbie's original life a feminist paradise or shallow without any real meaning? Is Barbieland's matriarchy supposed to be a satire of the patriarchy or the ideal of what the real world should be? Does Barbie encourage girls to embrace the paths they want or does she encourage toxic standards for beauty and femininity? Do men benefit from the patriarchy or are they hurt by it too? And the end result is just a confusing hodgepodge that ends up meaning different things to different people, and not in a good way
Wow, that were more unanswered questions than i had.
Ken objectively cannot be an incel as he was created to be Barbie’s boyfriend
My theory is that's Gerwig's intent. She made a movie criticizing modern feminism disguised as a feminist movie. I think the point she's really making is 1) the US as a whole is no longer patriarchal in the traditional sense (demonstrated by Ken's difficulty in getting a job and turned away by a female doctor) and 2) the outcomes sought by 3rd (or are we in 4th now?) wave feminists is no better than the patriarchy they think they're fighting against (Barbieland outcome not ending in true equality and Barbie, herself, choosing to live in the real world).
why are any of those questions necessary...the movie presents a fictional context it doesnt need to be clearly cut and explained in label equivalents of the real world. we can pull the dots. none of these 'either or' questions need to have a conclusion.
@@brianaguilar8283 Did Ken marry Barbie? Did he ever make love to her? Did he do that to any other woman? If not, then yes, he's an incel.
In my opinion, it's fine for an actor to always play the same character, especially if it's a fun character, just don't expect them to get many awards for it.
Agreed. John Wayne and Jason Statham are other examples of that. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
@thewhitestag33 Great examples!
@@FibonaccisghostJohn Wayne won one for True Grit
100% agree. Personally I felt it was full of strawmen arguments. It was basically live-action 'Velma' with a better budget.
I agree with you 100%. Everyone seems to think that movies should be nominated on the basis of popularity. It's not a popularity contest, no? 😀👍
Well tbh ever since the oscars expanded their Best Picture category from 5 to 10, they've always thrown in some pics just for the sake of popularity essentially. It's been a means for them to recognize movies that might not otherwise be recognized by them..just to say they did for the sake of ratings.
The true test as to which movies they truly see as Best Picture contenders are the ones that get both a Best Picture *and* Best Director nomination. Any movies remaining outside of that overlap, there's a fair chance it's more geared towards the masses rather than the more cineaste-heavy tastes of the traditional Academy.
@@chrisjfox8715 Black Panther only got a best picture nomination because the academy was trying to pander
But the Oscars have long been about popularity and politics… that’s the reality…
it’s never been truly about the artistic merit… which is why most of the time the Best Picture winners, etc are the best ~~ whether noted at the time or realized over the passage of time.
OH MY SWEET BABY JESUS THANK YOU!! you took the words right out of my mouth.
this movie is so confused in its messaging it was so hard to decipher it while watching. I felt like I was going crazy hearing people talk about the "depth" and "satire" this movie does when it's just... really not there.
If there was a oscar for most confusing, it'd win it.
Barbie missing big things(I predicted Gerwig missing director and editing)wasn't the most confusing thing they did
Gotta wonder, does any of those people realize that all of Robbie’s competitors are actually women, and Gosling’s are men? Or that every other category that’s been nominated, has women front and center, Robbie and Gerwig included?
The funny thing on the internet is people saying the movie has an important message.
Like what message? Barbies were oppressing the Kens at the start of the movie; at the end, they returned to it.
The evil CEO is about money, but when the Kens make more money, he doesn't care, he wants Barbies to be the center of attention.
Barbie plot of wanting to be a human came out of nowhere, I was like, did I miss the extra content of the movie or something?
People keep saying stuff like "the fact that people still need to hear "basic feminism" like the speech in Barbie proves we still have so far to go!"
Um, no lol. Nothing in the film, or that god awful speech, is something movies and TV haven't said, and said BETTER, for decades now at this point. Like, the speech is 90s Disney Channel level deep.
Aside from modern pop culture references, Barbie feels weirdly dated and behind the times.
@@nope5657i hated that speech because everyone talked about how ground-breaking it was, saying things like "tattoo this on my forehead" and going on about how epic it was when...america literally said the exact same thing in an episode of superstore like 7 years ago lol it's not new. it's not groundbreaking. it's recycled and felt cheap.
@@chernobylchickennugget3224 what is the point? because it seems like no one really learned any lessons. in the end it still wasn't "we learned we all have value and to respect and appreciate each other and our own unique things" but rather "someday ken's might have equal power....someday." it just cheapened the message of the movie.
@@promisemochi kens were treated as second-class citizens while barbies were seen as superior to kens... doesn't that remind you of any dynamic that is very prevalent in today's society? it is also (and trying not to spoil the meaning of the movie for you) about Barbie and women's experiences, not Ken
@@chernobylchickennugget3224 but the movie comes across as being about everyone being equal, as it should be, not about placing one gender above the other. that's why barbie tells ken "it can be about barbie and it can be about ken" and tells him he's important and worthy all on his own. only to completely undermine the message by making the kens second class citizens. i've seen the movie three times and while i like some of it, i just felt that it undercut itself and what it was trying to say. it's like it wanted it to be about equality but in the very last minute said "nope nevermind!"
We have to stop giving "the internet" so much attention. It is grossly unfair that the people with the least to do in this world can basically control the narrative. I haven't seen Barbie yet but I am perfectly happy that Barbie didn't get a nomination for director or actress.
The internet truly empowered the losers of society
There were interviews I saw with Gerwig and Robbie where even they were arguing over what the messages of the movie were. Perhaps the sloppy messaging is why a variety of people were able to see their preferred message in the fim, e.g., 'Ken is the hero of the film'.
Ken is the hero to me, Barbie is an antihero at best
actually its pretty normal for people envolved in a film to have different debates about their perceptions of the film it usually shows the movie is layered. but i bet we wouldnt be having this discussion if scorcese and dicaprio were debating about the meaning of one of their movies...
For people to say "snubbed," they have to consider who or what they would take off the list. The list is limited to a certain amount of slots and not everybody gets a trophy.
I was watching when it happened..."E.T. The Extraterrestrial" lost Best Picture to "Gandhi" at the 55th Academy Awards. Learned at a young age that Oscar voters don't follow tends/the public's favorites ; )
It depends on the phase or year. The Sound of Music, The Godfather, Titanic and Lord of the Rings :The Return of the King were the biggest hits of their years as well as the best picture winners. Since Lord of the Rings :the Return of the King, they have preferred lower budget dramas rather than big blockbusters.
True ; )
The Barbie movie is a disjointed narrative messed with a combination of bad messaging and mixed messaging that ends up as a 2 hour struggle session and very little else.
Didn't know the Oscars were on until I saw your video.
“A bit overrated?” You’re being too nice.
"Barbie is snubbed in the Oscar"
"Are you forgetting the 8 Oscar nominations, including best picture?"
Yes that's how I feel about it, it screams entitlement because they want 10 nominations and not happy enough with 8? 😅
I would say Barbie doesn't deserve to be nominated for Best Picture.
Not even CLOSE. Anybody who does watches like, 5 movies a year, lol.
I was excited about the movie until I heard reviews. I was a big Barbie fan when I was a kid. But when I heard Barbie were bosses and Ken were second class citizens I knew it wasn't for me. Then I hate it made so much money because I knew it'd be incentive to make more movies like it. Just sick of all this gender and race divide.
YES. THANK YOU!! A sane take for once! Also love watching your videos, great work! ❤
Ironically, Ken was the best character in Barbie.
Watching Barbie snub Ken in the beginning brought back a WAVE of bad memories and I don't think I'm the only guy who felt that way.
Like, seeing that look of rejection on his face was like looking at a mirror of my past self.
It would be better if that part was played as barbie's moment of doing wrong. But instead it feels like she's not held accountable for it
@@aeoligarlic4024 Held accountable? Bro, listen. I'm not trying to hold anyone accountable for rejecting me or anything, that's stupid and unmanly.
I just wished that this society that keeps going on and on about how much they want men to be more in touch with their emotions. . .
wasn't as honest as my half-brother.
@@Darth_Bateman huh.. that kind of came out wrong, okay let me rephrase that
In no way that someone who rejects a romantic advances should be 'held accountable'. But there is a part where the scenes make her look so self-centered and devoid of emotions. Seeing Ken only as a friend isn't a crime, but you don't treat your good friend like some stepping stone. Like the beginning of the movie where she practically snub him bc it's barbie's night also how the Kens constantly treated like 2nd best
@@aeoligarlic4024 it makes Barbie look like a bitch
@@aeoligarlic4024 okay now THAT is fair.
Yeah. 👍🏿
Barbie (to me) is a weird level of a participation trophy - it stands there to be enough of a message to say “see, look, look at what women deal with” while simultaneously stoking the fires of feminine rage by robbing Margot and Gerwig of nominations. On that note, it also gives “dancing monkey” vibes with a sense of “haha, go on and tell me more about what women deal with”.
I Tonya was probably her best role in my opinion.
You definitely spoke my thoughts! Keep up the good work.
Great video. I definitely agree. Plus it got several nominations and one for best picture that's not exactly a snub.
It doesn’t deserve best picture either
Barbie is the cinematic equivalent of word salad. It doesn’t have a point and is just a hodgepodge of different conflicting ideas collected together in a nasty bowl of wet and slimy greens. It’s the best example of death of the author
As a review on Instagram said, Gerwig clearly has a lot to say, but she ends up choking on half of it.
totally agree
As someone who JUST saw it in theaters, I totally agree.
This how I explained it to my wife too. Basically I get the mesaage they were going for but they did it in such a hamfisted way I just sympathized with Ken way way more easily
Thank God someone else feels the same way I do about Margot Robbie and Barbie. I find this whole controversy over her and Greta Gerwig getting "snubbed" to be beyond ridiculous & pretty much peak white feminism. Especially when Greta Lee and Celine Song who also gave us a beautiful poignant film with a central female lead character & stunning performance were far more deserving of those noms imo.
Boy, you're going to get a ton of shit for this.
As for Gosling, I think he does deserve the nom. I don't think he deserves to win, but locking himself into Ken's mindset and delivering a killer performance in a role that could have been a black hole in the film deserves the nod.
Gosling was the best part of the film for me. He somehow made me feel for Ken due to his acting. He absolutely deserves the nom.
@@Missjunebugfreak I'm a guy so I'm biased, but yeah. A lot of the Barbies acted alike, and so did the Kens. Gosling is really the only one whose emotional conflict is there on the screen. You feel for Ken, because he's such a sap, and Barbie really doesn't realize the hold she has over him. There's also a terrific YT video (I forget the title but it should be easy to find) where it highlights some of the subtle physical tricks Gosling did: little shirks, avoiding eye contact or blinking fast, making his voice more breathy on some lines. Since Gertwig probably doesn't know how men are shy, not being a man, Gosling must have really worked on how he wanted to look, stand, and talk for his scenes, and Getwig let him run with it since everyone was cracking up on the set. Little did they know he would steal the picture, which is a rare thing for a man to do in a movie surrounded by beautiful women. Ken did turn out to be a Ten...
Agreed, the best parts of the film were Ryan Gosling, the song “I’m Just Ken”, and the production design in that order. Otherwise, I did not like it really at all.
I love Oppenheimer more. Barbie was a great entertaining film and it’s nice to see it received 8 Oscar nominations. I agree Margot Robbie did a nice job as Barbie but I don’t really think that is Oscar worthy. Greta Gerwig did a good job directing Barbie but I think she did a better job in other films she directed like Little Women. I guarantee Oppenheimer will be the big winner for this year’s Academy Awards. I hope this will be the first time Christopher Nolan win best director at the Academy Awards. I also guarantee that Avatar: The Way of Water, Oppenheimer, and Barbie will the big winners for the Saturn Awards.
Lady Bird and Little Women were WAY better than Barbie, I’m disappointed that this is the movie she’ll be known for because she’s done better stuff
I walked out of that theatre just shocked after I saw Barbie 😂 don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the Kens had a character arc. They were my favorite part of the film but the fact that that stupid movie had the Barbies act like drones who go along with whatever the last person told them to do and who re-embrace a sexist social system at the end was the biggest thing that annoyed me. They’re the characters the entire film is named after and they get written out to be assholes by the end? There’s so much that annoyed me about their portrayal from all that to even the way they acted around people discussing movies and sharing their interests with them.
I was excited to see this movie and I think the visuals are great and that both the lead performances were good. I agree about Robbie’s range and Gosling being the better of the two but both did a good job in these roles. I really can’t think of what else to praise though. Well, besides getting to see Michael Cera fight some dudes. The script kinda sucked.
You are on a Roll and I am happy to see it!!! It is cool you are even reading the script of Barbie as well❤❤ BTW, I Am Kenough😉❤️👍🏾👍🏾
Ive heard so many women say the speech at the end by the mom was the best part. I remember my girlfriend and all the women in the theater crying. I can’t help but think thats the worst cringiest scene in the film because 90% of what she said applies to humans in general not women specifically
It’s a Twitter rant basically
I thought that the montage of the different women was the most emotional.
Man, I really feel so alone on saying I didn't like the movie, it feels like a Black Mirror episode to watch basically everyone in my circle to talk such a mid movie as if it was The Godfather like they were brainwashed or something 😂
"Male lead the only one to win an Oscar in an extremely feminist movie" is a fucking hilarious headline😂
Also even as a 24yo straight black man, I liked the Barbie movie for what its worth.
Feminists causes make more money off this headline.
Why change something when you can make money off of it?
I find more hilarious that the hyper feminist movie is the only one in history where both the cast and the fans of the movies are actively mad at the movie getting nominations
I believe the major contribution from Barbie is sparking the conversation about basic feminism BUT that doesn’t make it the best movie ever 🤨 like why is it even nominated for screenplay when so many things seem like unfinished? I would have preferred the nomination for Greta rather than that one.
Also this whole Oppenheimer vs Barbie discussion is taking attention of other projects that deserve recognition! Why are we fighting over if one or other movie from a millionaire studio and well known directors deserves more? Why aren’t we asking why international movies are being pushed off most categories or why movies from smaller studios didn’t even make it to the nominations? 🤨 *cough* the Iron Claw *cough*
Japan did not put forward Godzilla minus one, so it was not eligible for International Feature.
Sounds like you have a fair, well thought out take, Jester. I never thought the movie deserved any academy awards so this all seems like it makes sense. Why people are getting all bent out of shape over it is odd to me. Thanks for the great info on the topic.
It only deserve Art Direction. But Gosling was one of the better things about it. For a movie about the most well known fashion doll of all time the fashion was really lackluster.
Thank you for this!
Poor things is just the better Barbie. Everything Barbie does, Poor Things does better. As much as I love Margot Robbie’s performance as Barbie, even if Annette Benning wasn’t nominated, there are still like 3 other actresses that have a better performance this year. People who complain about not nominating big blockbusters, mostly don’t watch a lot of movies outside the mainstream. Trust me when I say that besides the Charles Melton snub over Robert Deniro, and Annette Benning being nominated over Greta Lee, this years nominations are pretty spot on in terms of quality of performance. I’ve watched all the nominations as well as the other considerations, and these noms r fine.
Oooohh but emma Watson show frontal nudity, so is not empowering if they show porn.....
Poor Things, looks like an on the nose obvious slog. Tell me I am wrong and that I should see it.
@@everettharrell6920 well if you like the frankenstein story mix with a terry gillian type of setting then you will like it fine.
Charles Melton didn't get snubbed by Robert De Niro. Robert De Niro was amazing and fascinating to watch in Killers of the Flower Moon.
Poor Things reduces womanhood to clit. It excuses statutory r* as a life lesson. At least Barbie's life journey wasn't tied to romantic relationships with men.
Yes, Thank you! I am happy someone said this! I agree about everything that you said about Margo Robie and her acting👏👏👏
It was also almost a Disney free Oscar's too!
Yeah Margot, next time at least try fighting a bear or sleep inside an horse carcass while there's a friggin blizzard xD
I believe Barbie movie was the most real attempt to the same situation as
" the producers movie "😅 😂
I’m an Oppenheimer guy and although I like the whole Barbenheimer thing, I just wasn’t interested in watching Barbie because it appeared to be too meta and a little too corporate for my tastes. Not that I think it would be a bad movie, but it just didn’t appeal to me.
Thank you for your continually good takes on modern cinema. Proud to support you!
I fully agree!!! Also with the “Ryan doesn’t really deserve one either” production design, costume design, and soundtrack are probably the only elements that deserve a nomination at all!!!
I actually think there is some merit to nominating performances like Ryan Gosling's Ken. His performance elevated the movie in a way few actors could. Take Key Huay Quan's win for Everything Everywhere All At Once. Not the most transformative role, but a very memorable one that improved the film.
Great video. I agree with you 100%
Another great video. Thanks for the details, it wasn’t “the good, bad , and the ugly”, it was confused
i agree with you 100%. Ken had a better story arc and on top of that in a lot of the movie Ken was acting and over acting for the sake of getting Barbies attention and Barbie was just reacting to ken. Barbie was just being and existing and Ken was living for her so it makes sense to me as to why Ryan was nominated because he was doing the most acting in this entire movie.
Hello JesterBell: You made the most intelligent observations I have heard on this movie. Good job. Well done.
This is one of the most succinctly accurate critiques of The Barbie movie I have heard yet! You put all my jumbled opinions of this movie in a concise linear way I enjoyed. Thank you, and I agree.
Couldn’t agree with you more 👏🏽
I totally agree!!!
Margot had 4 box office bombs going into Barbie … and playing a stereotypical plastic doll with very little character doesn’t spell best actress. In fairness to Margot, male actor like Jack Nickelson, Dustin Hoffman, baby daddy Robert De Niro and Al Pacino play themselves for most their entire careers. My guess is is the movie will be like the doll, a big pop culture hit for a limited time before it’s core audience grows up and moves to other things.
Great vid thanks.
Thank you very much for this video, Jester.
My thoughts on Barbie have gotten a lot of flack recently, but you're pretty much summing up what I've said. The internet made this out to be bigger than it actually is, and that it's doing something big and new. It really isn't. It's not preachy by any means, but it's just sort of been there done that. I came out of it thinking it was ok, but it's far from great, and if I watch it again, I have a feeling my score may drop.
You bought yourself a sub.
Also I’m now subscribed. Thanks for the great video and keep up the good work
I think you deserve an Oscar for this video, and I mean that. Glad someone said it and said it well.
9 to 5 (1980) is still the ultimate feminist film and actually led to real world changes in the work place. This was back when women had real complaints. Now, it's like the aging boxer, still fighting even though they've already won.
Although the fact that in 1980 the phrase "9 to 5" was synonymous with a regular job indicates that many real world changes since 1980 have not been so good. Neither "working a zero hours contract/have no idea what my regular monthly income is" or "working two separate jobs/one during the day, one during the evening" are quite as catchy as lyrics! Working 9 to 5? We were lucky!
@markpostgate2551 lol. Yeah. Now it'd be:
Working 7 to 3
then go home and shower
for my
night shift at
the local Applebee's
Lol
Yeah, her going to the Gynacologist at the end was silly.
Great take. I agree with the majority of your points.
Absolutely agree! Right away u can tell how the whole movie is gonna play out. You can have inspirational movies about women without devaluing all men or shoving the message in your face the whole time
I agree 100% with you
One could say; it insists upon itself
My criticism of the movie, in very few words, is: my favorite character was Ken.
My other criticism in more words: the monologue America Ferreira gives is the intended point of the film, but I don't think it hits in the context of the story. The Barbies live in a matriarchy, they don't have the point of reference of the audience living in the real world so, while the monologue is powerful and resonated with a lot of people, it's 100% preaching to the audience - which is fine, but it felt pretty shallow to me...and Ken's journey seemed more sympathetic and motivating than Barbie's so...yeah.
It was hokey cinematic misandry. That's why Christy Lemire loved it so much.
The Writer's Block also talked about how the structure of the script made the film a rorschach test, allowing people ti project meaning on the film.
I mean it's got 8 nominations!
That's not a snub for a average 3 star film
OK I like you a lot. I agree totally that Margot and Greta should not be nominated, which is why I clicked on this video. When you said you have nothing against feminist films and that there have been some really good ones, I immediately thought of Thelma And Louise, and BHAM the image of T&L comes up on the screen. You rock. You have a brain. You see when things are too preachy and on the nose and recognize that. I love that you think for yourself and don't give in to Mattel hype.
The movie looks pretty and that’s pretty much it according to all the reviews I’ve seen.
I loved the movie for how it looked. It was so bright and fun but with a darker tone. I mean doll gaining consciousness and being afraid of dying is some real shit. I loved that it was the mom playing with the doll and not her daughter. It was very heavy handed at times but it was fun.
I couldn't agree with you more.
Barbie's success is just very good marketing by Hollywood and Mattel toys.
Agree 100%
Preach.
Your right Margot Robbie reminds me of Ryan Reynolds who plays the same character each time.
FYI, for Gozilla minus one to be nominated in the International Feature Category, it has to be submitted by Japan as its official choice. Japan's pick for this year was Perfect Days. Just like France inexplicably chose The Taste of Things instead of Anatomy of a Fall.
That's a good point about existential movie needing to explain why the movie exists. In writing, I think in debate or in prose it's called the "warrant." Any argument you make should end with why you think the argument is important to make.
I just think, after months of sitting on it, that Barbie is a completely mid-tier movie. All politics and opinions aside, the plotline and acting hasn't stuck with me at all. It was lackluster even (considering its hype) and maybe an unpopular opinion: but I don't think ANYONE involved with that movie deserved an oscar nom lol. I think the academy threw Barbie a few bones to Gosling and Ferrera just so people wouldn't be TOO pissed, but I don't think it'll actually take home any wins.
Could not have said it better myself! I’ve been so confused about the high praise the masses are giving it, it was so average to me
you know whats the real shock in this years oscars? godzilla minus one not being nominated for best picture, sound design, score and even international feature. what the actual F..... hollywood are really that insecure? cant admit defeat huh? jesus.
Great, honest, totally justifiable reaction to Barbie's Oscar "snubs".
Nice take! I absolutely agree with what you said and also gained new insights, for which I thank you.
I also think that the target audience of this movie is way too broad. An older person can appreciate and enjoy a movie aimed at children because of how it skilfully and intelligently addresses them, while integrating some pearls only adults can truly appreciate. But Barbie is a mash-up of messages and jokes with recipients ranging from adults to toddlers, with "Pingu", "Winx Club", "The Simpsons" and "Little Women" type contents sharing the same space, constantly breaking the flow for those, like me and my adolescent niece, who were simply hoping to enjoy a lighthearted and nostalgic celebration of our childhood.
I do understand wanting to deal with the controversies surrounding Barbie throughout its history, but isn't it hypocritical and contradictory to criticise a product launched into the market to defy the status quo, for not being revolutionary enough? Wasn't that little step brave enough considering its historical context? Isn't the only clear message here not to submit to the pressure of unrealistic expectations?
Barbie surely isn't perfect, but its introduction did play a little role in liberating girls from some of the narrow spaces the idea of womanhood was forced into.
The level of wisdom of this movie is, in my opinion, that of an adolescent complaining about how unfair the world is, still blind to how complex and complicated evolution can be.
It’s unfortunate Godzilla wasn’t nominated, but Japan didn’t choose it as their submission. It still worked out though as Japan’s submission actually got the nomination.
Also in animated feature Suzume should have been nominated instead of Elementals.
@@Chinoiserie9839 I would say Ninja Turtles instead. Suzume was almost great but the ending didn’t really all come together like it probably should have. Also, i guess it’s a cultural thing, but can they stop having older men start a relationship with underage girls or vice versa?
hehe new video jb 😀
Princess and the Pauper continues to be the best Barbie movie
I like how analytical you are with this and processing how you felt. And how those feelings switch with time and understanding. I definitely can see why you think and feel that way, but I took it as satire because it just felt like it was supposed to be "all image/no depth" . And it works as that. Plus the main thing is that it was FUN. The visuals, music and feel is like pure Prozac.
Why can’t a movie be both intellectually and emotionally satisfying?
@@brianaguilar8283 Good question. That's RARE. Like a healthy junk food.
I found it hard to get mad at the movie because it was so mid. Harmless, and frequently salvaged by Gosling's balls-out Ken, but often dreary for a comedy. Not to mention the "message" was pretty clunky, but again I just couldn't take it seriously enough to take offense. In fact, I kind of expected a stronger feminist bent given the subject matter and writer/director. It's not even a discussion that Barbie was less interesting than Ken
I should also say that I saw it in a mostly full theater with a lot of women and teenage girls, and the biggest reactions (laughs) I hear came from me and my two (male) friends. A couple of moments got reactions from the entire auditorium but I mostly felt I enjoyed it more than most people in there
We could say that it was amazingly fun and iconic like the Lego movie but not necessarily that impactful compared to other best picture winners
I agree! There was so much hype for this film where it seems that those who got so into it, specifically the big time feminists, got too excited. Now, I don't hear nearly as many people talk about it as if the hype was a mirage and has dissipated. Same with Little Mermaid live action. Almost as if people's silence and no longer defending these types os films (where current issues and politically motivated hype exist) confirms the fact that they aren't that great after all. Therefore, in this case, all the people they called "haters" who weren't onboard, were right in the end.
you are literaly still talking about it...
@@lukesouthern3640give it a year or two and will age like fine milk. Barbie is one of those movies that would not stand the test of time. It will be equivalent to The Greatest Show on Earth before this decade ends. Also the only reason people are still talking about it is because of their overblown complaints about why it was not nominated in categories they are eying for the film. Bye!
Hot take: De Niro also just plays himself every time.
Isn't it great that a way better film that actualy had a smart clear feminist message got 11 nominations with POOR THINGS.
Barbie was just a messy film that had no idea what it wanted to say.
