    Pro Tip from my 40+ years experience general contractor brother: Spritz that caulking bead with a NON-AMMONIA-based window spray cleaner. Then run your finger along the bead to give it a professional finish. Does a much better and less messy job than a damp rag. No need to even wipe up the excess spray cleaner as it will simply evaporate with no residue. Great video!

    As a professional carpenter, don't EVER ask if someone wants a reveal. Just do it! The flush mount will always have a noticeable seam unless both pieces have dead square edges and caulk will make it worse. The reveal will always look nicer and will hide settlement of the structure much better.

      There should be a three inch apron on top, Similar to bottom floor Cabinets kick plate/apron, like that yo can dress it up with a nice molding, for a nice looking professional job.

    I am also finishing up an Ikea cabinet install with the 40 inch uppers which are leaving a gap at the top. I was going to take their contoured deco trim piece and cut it down but I am not sure that is going to work. My ceiling is pretty uneven from filling in an old soffit. I have a ton of scribing to do but this might help me in a few areas. It at least gives me something to think about. Having the piece wider than you would think you need so you can nail it through the top is kind of an obvious 'duh' moment for myself.
    We have the bodbyn gray so I would have to do some paint matching. Luckily, I found some caulk you can custom color with paint so I can get all those little fiddly bits filled in.

    as i always learned not all walls or ceilings are straight 😁 this is a good idea im remodeling our kitchen in next 2 weeks and our 42 in cabinets will be all the way up the ceiling BUT.. i'd rather leave an inch to fill so cabinets wont have problems opening so filling that gap will be helpful. and the back gap can be filled with scribe molding.

    Flush just creates an ugly seam. We try and avoid seams if possible. If your installing new cabinets, Cut and install the molding first, then install the cabinet tight to the ceiling. Shoot your nails in from the top. Make sure they are not too long, or you will blow out the inside of the cabinet and have nails sticking out.
    This is still considered crown though. Flat crown

    People ...the ceiling is not level so the reveal is not level. He had to find a way to fill in something. So what if he moved the cabinet up. The cabinet needed to be level, thus no matter what there would have been a gap. Once the area is filled, lived in and accessorized, his solution will hardly be noticed. When I had this problem in an home reno to make three apts thus needing three kitchenettes, these cupboards where not only simple, but the perfect tenant cupboard easy to replace. We hung up four wall shelves in each kitchen using the thick colored acrylic shelving which we had cut at a glass store and angle brackets. Then took the same colored thick plastic see thru material-acylic Green or Blue or Yellow (each kitchen had its own color)... and that was what we inserted into the gap, essentially matching the blinds to the acryllic shelves to the acryllic gap material and the handles on the drawers all coincided. So you can always decorate this away. but the acryllic comes in a array of colors and is very nifty looks like colored glass easy to attach no need to glue corners. We caulked the top! used a pry bar to get it flush with the cabinet and caulked the ceiling seam. Came out very clean.

    • @dighawaii1
      @dighawaii1 2 года назад

      Nah. the cabinets could have simply been mounted as close as possible to the ceiling. It's half an inch, no one cares about cabinets being a half inch higher. Then use either caulk or lattice strips to hide any gaps.

    So if I have a smaller gap ( 0.5”) on one line of cabinets versus 1.5 “ on the other side of cabinets. How can I make it look less nice ? My cabinet guy said there is nothing he can do and now I’m very disappointed. He had told me there would be a mall gap but it looks unfinished. The rest of the kitchen looks beautiful but just the uneven gaps are really bothersome.

  • @psdaengr911

    If the ceiling is flat, you should have been able to mount the cabinets high enough that no gap was visible with the doors closed.

    • @chrisford8403
      @chrisford8403 2 года назад +2

      When you're mounting cabinets, you want them level. Floors, walls and ceilings are never perfectly square and level. So, you need to leave space above the cabinet for adjustment. Consider that a run of cabinets is usually made up of 3-10 cabinets, that can be anywhere between 3 and 20 feet. Also consider that these are Ikea style flat top cabinets. That means the entire roof of the cabinet needs to sit on the ceiling as opposed to conventional plywood cabinets where only 3/4" is touching the ceiling.

    • @Josh.1234
      @Josh.1234 Год назад

      @@chrisford8403 also you don't want to mount your cabinets much higher than 18" over the counters. If he has a unusual ceiling height, there might not be a cabinet height that perfectly hits the ceiling.
