This band was attacked by critics for childish lyrics, they responded by writing Eleonore. You must listen to the lyrics. It was a big FU to the critics. It Ain't Me Babe is a great song too.
My 1st boyfriend, in 7th grade, bought this single for me. It was "our song". We went together on & off throughout junior high & high school. Didn't end up together but still, that song brings back sweet memories of Puppy Love. And I'm sure many others feel the same. It was a huge hit. 💙☮💙
This was the Turtles biggest hit, something of a mixed blessing for them, because they bought this song to record. They wanted to be a band that wrote its own songs, but their record label wanted them to just keep buying more songs like Happy Together. They fought their label over that until a bitter break up. Their second biggest hit, Elenore, is a song they wrote to satirize Happy Together. The two main Turtles were among the funniest in rock, that is how they got into Frank Zappa's band. And when Zappa was stabbed by a crazed fan they took his band and recorded as Flo and Eddie. But they were also radio DJs in LA and sang back up on an amazing variety of classic rock songs in the 70's. At least until the Coronavirus hit they will hosting a Happy Together tour in which they and a variety of other 60's bands toured each playing about 5 songs, but with 6 or 7 total bands on the tour like The Cowsills, The Association, the singer from Paul Revere and the Raiders etc.
I was going to tell the story of how and why Elenore was written but I see you already did a great job of explaining it. I will add two details. One is when Howard Kaylan wrote Elenore as a joke to get back at the record company he said no one got the joke. He put "Et cetera" in the song because he thought it was ridiculous and yet the joke went over everyone's head. Also, Kaylan said that he tried to make Elenore the opposite of Happy Together in the way he wrote it. Wherever Happy Together went up he tried to make Elenore go down.
@@daletwin1 I did not know that last bit, interesting. I have seen Elenore put on lists of songs with the worst lyrics, and of course they point to that et cetera as proof. But that just misses the point of the song. The whole battle of the bands concept is great. That they are making fun of "We are the World/Do They Know Its Christmas" type songs almost two decades before these songs were recorded is particularly impressive.
@@lonbecker113 here is an interview where Howard Kaylan himself explains his true motives behind the song Elenore. It's pretty interesting. He tried to write juvenile lyrics because he was hoping the record company would stop asking them to write more "Happy Together types of songs". But, the joke was really on him because the song was a big hit and no one got his joke. I personally love the song and the lyrics because of the silly, unique word choices. ruclips.net/video/zhsmcL8Y57w/видео.html
The lead singer Howard Kaylan is a great friend of mine and we've been friends on social media for over 10 years. When I met him backstage at a concert in 2017 it was exactly 50 years after he met The Beatles, Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix all on the same night in 1967. Then by the end of the concert.. I ended up being on stage with him and some of the other acts, singing this song ☮️
Love that song. I also love playing it on the guitar. I just love the chord progression. Elenore, You Showed Me and You Baby are also great songs by The Turtles.
There were so many great hits in 1967, e.g.: “Groovin” by The Rascals, “Western Union” by The Five Americans, “Nobody But Me” by The Human Beinz, “Baby, Now That I’ve Found You” by The Foundations, & “Don’t You Care” by The Buckinghams. Of course, The Beatles and The Doors also had great ones that year.
The song was 1967 and has been in movies, tv shows and commercials. A true classic. The Turtles along with the Lovin' Spoonful and Gary Lewis and the Playboys had their 1st seven singles reach the Top 10 and doing it during the 60s British Invasion. They were the only American groups to do it.
The Turtles were fun-loving intellectuals who were associated with Frank Zappa, but who had huge hits on the radio. The leaders, Flo & Eddie went on their own, and I got to see them in Charlotte, where I believe they opened for Zappa or maybe Roxy Music. Same small venue, which meant a more intimate gathering. Same small venue that Pink Floyd used to perform their Dark Side of the Moon tour, where I was hugging the stage, half crocked. Ah music the 70s!
This song always makes me think about my father. He used play this record and sing it when i was a little kid. He would talk about this being one of the songs his old band would play.
I saw The Turtles along with a few other "oldies" bands in the 90s at a firefighter benefit concert. They were the best band of the night. The tambourine player does Globetrotter style tricks with his tambourine and they sounded great. Very entertaining band.
It was such a wonderful time for music in the 60s and 70s.Everyone sang songs in those days.Just harmonies like in elementary school but adult themes.I wonder if they still teach little kids to sing?
Back in the 60's, a lot of groups were named after animals or reptiles. I don't know the reason behind that. Never looked into it. You had the Beatles, Three Dog Night, the Monkies, The list is endless. But what an era to grow up in!!! I miss those days!!!!
"Happy Together" was a number one hit for The Turtles in 1967. The song defined the sound of commercial pop music for years afterward. The Turtles landed several top forty hits in the sixties, starting with a cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" in 1965, followed by "You Baby" in 1966 before culminating with this song and extending into 1968 with the top ten hits "Elenore" and "You Showed Me", a subtle treat with a quirky modal change in the bridge. Founding members of The Turtles, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, aka Flo & Eddie, sang backing vocals on the 1971 T. Rex classic "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" as well as on Bruce Springsteen's 1980 top ten hit "Hungry Heart". They also composed the musical scores for Strawberry Shortcake and The Care Bears animated television shows.
One of my favorite songs from high school. The Turtles were an L. A.-based band that had an impressive, if somewhat short, string of hits. "Happy Together" was, by far, their biggest hit, and their only single that went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It was one of the top two or three hits of 1967 (#1 on some radio stations' end-of-year lists). Their other big hits were, "It Ain't Me, Babe," "You Baby," "She'd Rather Be With Me," "You Know What I Mean," "She's My Girl," "Elenore," and "You Showed Me." They're all great. The lead singer was Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman provided the harmonies. The two of them broke off from the band and formed a comedy rock duo known as Flo and Eddie, which never enjoyed the kind of mainstream commercial success as The Turtles, but did develop a huge cult following. I thought Howard Kayland had one of the most distinctive, albeit under-appreciated, voices of any male singer to come out of the incredible '60s. Several of the Turtles songs, and especially "Happy Together," are considered rock and roll classics.
Another great group from the 60's. The Turtles are an American rock band formed in 1965. "Happy Together" is their biggest hit in 1967. But they had a lot of great songs such as "It Ain't Me Babe", "Let Me Be", "You Baby", "Grim Reaper Of Love", "Can I Get To Know You Better", "She'd Rather Be With Me", "You Know What I Mean", "She's My Girl", "Elenore", "You Showed Me" etc.
You should check out some videos of them performing. Howard Kaylan had such an incredible voice but nobody ever looked less like a pop star - except for his writing and singing partner, Mark Volman, who was quite a funny character. When they broke from their record contact they found that they couldn't use the name The Turtles, but couldn't even sing under their own names. So, they went by the name "Flo and Eddie", Flo being short for Volman's nickname, "the fluorescent leech". They sang with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention for a couple of years.
The Turtles evolved out of a Surf band I think were called the Crossfires. Check out their appearance on (possibly) the Ed Sullivan Show, where they perform either "Happy Together" or "She'd Rather Be With Me". Throughout the song, Mark Volman (acting like a clown) wanders around the stage with a French Horn, while Howard Kaylan (with a straight face !) sings the song.
If it’s familiar it’s because it’s been in so many commercials and movies. You know it goes way back when you hear “ call you up, invest a dime,” that’s how much pay phones cost back then for a two or three minute call. Sorry no cell phones, so if you were out you’d have to look for the nearest pay phone. I definitely don’t miss that.
Marvelous icon of the sunshine 1960s just after the Beatles turned pop music USA upside-down and inside-out. I am so glad you guys checked out this song. Clocked in at AM radio time of around 2 min 50 sec, punched through little teeny speakers of a million baby-boomer pocket transistor radios. Yet, a work of music art. The Turtles were a pop-rock band that appeared straight from high school hallways of southern California and into the big time. And they were good. Very, very good. You could easily pair Otis Redding with the Turtles in one live show and get big city 1960s vibe! BTW -- in that age before cellphones, a local call from a payphone cost 10 cents. Love you guys, keep up the great reacts!
ELENORE and CAN I GET TO KNOW YOU BETTER are good songs by the Turtles which also capture that late 6o's, hippy, psychedelic feeling that we could all use a dose of today. But that's why this music holds its value by making us happy when the world is running down.
You both are so great together. Love your chemistry. I see the connection. Songs like this bring it out! Classic 60's song. The Turtles had several pop hits.
Since the 1980's, The lead singer (and maybe some of the original band?) still have concerts with the "Happy Together" tour, including other top singers of the time (Gary Puckett, Vogues, Cowsills, Association, Buckinghams). Have tickets for that in a couple of weeks.
I always felt the last few milliseconds of the track were thoughtfully done. the closing was so unique. it also gives a feeling of doom to relationships while the lead slowly fades with "happy together" while the chorus drowns him out with ba-ba's which could substitute for problems and chaos. it seems like a metaphorical record of the time. 1967 was a year of many changes in the way society saw the world and viewed free love. maybe?
Great song and they had memorable harmonies, it sounds like 60s music that stood the test of time and will be listened to for centuries to come. It us just a good times song I have enjoyed since it was released. For another Turtles classic, try Elenor, You will love it! Enjoy. 🎵
The clue to the age of the song is the lyric, "if I should call you up and drop a dime." ---pay phones....calls were a dime in the 60's. I think it was about to a quarter in the 80's, and now, well, I can't remember the last time I actually saw a pay phone!
Their greatest hit among many and it reached #1 in the country. It defined a generation. I was in 8th grade and my I.D. bracelet was making its rounds among the girls!!!!!!!!!!!
Turtles had many classic hits in the 60's. I also like their songs "Nobody But You", "It Aint Me Babe", which is actually a song written by Bob Dylan, & they had a few more, which others I see have commented on already.
This song was released in 1967 I was thirteen at the time just entering High School I'm pushing 70 now and they still like the song plus many others by the turtles keep up the good work Deja and BJ thank you
Mid 60's. They were really big for 3 months. Got to give to them credit since this was right in the middle of the British Invasion. They were out of California. Like the Beach Boys. Don't laugh at Happy Together, How is the weather? It rhymes.
Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan, aka Flo & Eddy were also part of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. You should check out their album Illegal, Immoral and Fattening. One of the funniest things you will ever hear.
Yes we went to see them I believe it was at Warner Brothers both of them and we were with the local college radio club and out of the blue one of my friends raises his hand and he asks Mark and Howard if there was any secret subliminal meaning behind the song “buzz saw” It cracked them both up and they got the circum in the joke and this said yeah if you play it backwards it says blah blah blah blah blah… They’re very funny guys
I agree Asia - it has a classic sound but it doesn't sound dated. Very catchy song. One of the first pop songs I knew when I was a kid growing up in the 60s.
Very successful group from maybe 66 for a few, years. Two great singers Flo & Eddy( real names Howard & Mark). Upbeat sound. Many good songs. She'd Rather be With Me, She's My Girl, Elenore, You Showed Me. Those songs I listed are worth checking out. Also It Ain't me Babe.
Flo and Eddie as they were known we saw at radio station conference was there very funny guys they later went on to work for with Frank Zappa as singers and they’re just great couple of guys very funny They also did voices for some cartoon some kids young kids cartoon I don’t remember the name….
This song always creeped me out. The minor chord progression, the stalker type lyrics sung all happy. I don't know if that's what they were going for but that's how I hear it.
Yeah, this song gives off a warm and fuzzy vibe, but like all groups, they have different vibe as well. Try one of these songs, "It Ain't Me Babe" or "Elenore" or "She'd Rather Be With Me", they're all pretty good. This was a good time yall, thanks!
This song has been in more movies and TV shows than Tom Cruise - I'd be shocked if you haven't heard it before whether or not you realize it

They also did voices for some cartoon some kids young kids cartoon I don’t remember the name….
huge hit still sounds great today
DYNAMIC DUO!!! ,Please more songs by this great underated group.
Loved the Turtles
Fifth grade, Franklin Elementary, Oakland CA, playin' marbles....that's what this song makes me think of! lol
My grandson has autism, this song alway calms him down, he even tries to sing it sometimes, this song and other song on his grandpa’s playlist..
This is probably my favorite song from the 1960's
The Turtles, "Eleanor." ✌️
This song always creeped me out. The minor chord progression, the stalker type lyrics sung all happy. I don't know if that's what they were going for but that's how I hear it.
Asia is right... Some songs are timeless!
Yeah, this song gives off a warm and fuzzy vibe, but like all groups, they have different vibe as well. Try one of these songs, "It Ain't Me Babe" or "Elenore" or "She'd Rather Be With Me", they're all pretty good. This was a good time yall, thanks!
These guys went on to be the vocalists for frank zappa.
It's timeless.
'You Showed Me ' a classic and a fav of many , thanks
By the way drummer John Barbata is the most underrated and also an innovative drummer.
This is the ultimate happy song.
How about some Buckinghams, Kind of a Drag one of my favs from back then, haven't seen a reaction
I hope your next Turtles reaction will be to one where you can see them performing on stage. Flo and Eddie are really something else!
“How are you going to make me just know the song” Dying!!! 😂 and her face she was giving you!! 🤣🤣
They have some good songs....but their schtick is to lampoon everything...including sappy love
You need to also react to “It Ain’t Me Babe” by The Turtles!!!!
Cruising down the road with this playing, on a hot summer day with the top up on the AM radio because in those days FM was an option.
This reminds me of when I was little. I still love this old song.
One of the most upbeat tunes of any era.
Yes a blast from the past indeed. loved this when I was 8!
reminds me of my parents.. great song
It's great you guys react to The Turtles's song! Try Video Killed The Radio Star by The Buggles please. Thank you! 👍
You Showed Me is a very serene and mellow tune with a very good melody.
This song is just like just my imagination by The Temptations the first line in says imagine me and you
