Unfortunately, the biggest fix the Lightning needs is a something Ford can't fix anytime soon. And that's their dealers.
Other than that, it's the charging -- which will only be fixed on the next generation with it's 800v architecture. However, that $60,000 "Flash" version after the federal rebate with 320 miles of range, is a no brainer over a regular F-150. Especially with the Supercharger access it now has and then getting the monthly subscription to lower the rate to the same as for Teslas. Or if you can charge at home or work.
Unless you tow long distances (over 300 miles) very often, there's no need for a gas F-150 anymore with all the advantages the Lighting offers. Just powering your house or all your heavy-duty work tools right from the truck and negating the need for a noisy, smelly generator and all the fuel needed for it pays for the little difference in price.

This truck is going to make Ford Motor Company a fortune. There are big time details to be worked out mainly in making the truck more "rugged" for contracting work as the Tesla Cybertruck is already doing in a huge way but so long as towing is under 200 miles these vehicles will be minting money for those who do construction, short distance hauling and towing, lawn care you name it. No one is even close to competing with Tesla but Ford at least is in the game and has survived to tell about it. Not sure about Rivian at the moment though not for lacking in near perfect execution for their "stable." Both Ford and Rivian have simply failed to execute upon building out a charging infrastructure.

    • @Paul-cj1wb
      @Paul-cj1wb Месяц назад

@@doolittlegeorge You are aware that the Supercharger network is now open to both Ford and Rivian, correct? They no longer need their own charging network.
All they need to do is make sure to place the port in one of the 2 correct locations --passenger front or driver's rear. Ford has already confirmed that their next models will all come with their ports in one of those 2 locations. And Rivian better get on board or they'll go under.

I’ve had both manual and automatic charge doors and I worry about the reliability of the automatic door as the vehicle ages.
I guess I’ve spent my whole life manually closing the fuel door on all my vehicles, so I don’t find it a problem.
I do think the latch mechanism should be a bit more robust, it just feels a bit frail.
One un-mentioned change to the 2024 is the elimination of the “dummy” port cover on the passenger side, dashing all hopes for a passenger/front charge port to more seamlessly access the older NACS chargers with the micro-cables.

I would love to see a test of the standard range being driven like its design versus the extended range driven, like how most people do.
The difference is it's designed for shorter stop of 15-20 mins And then the charging curve dies off. Waiting for it to get back to 80 or 90% is a complete waste of time and take alot longer. Unless you just don't have access to charging stops.

I had a couple of cloudy days recently. So instead of charging my home solar batteries with the grid, I charged them up using my lightning. I just recently purchased a 10k inverter which I've been using solely to charge my lightning from the sun. Slow because I can only use my ford 240 volt 7200 watt charger but that's fine. So the next day I had a sunny day and charged my lightning back to 85%. I have close to 17kw of solar panels so whenever I'm not charging my lightning i have excess solar energy. Next up i need more Lithium-ion batteries. Currently i only have 23 kwh total battery power.

I’m not a person who needs a pickup truck but if I did, without question I would get the F150 Flash version. Even w/o the tax credit it is much cheaper than the Cybertruck whose current available editions start at $80k and do not have the features that the Ford offers. From what I’ve seen of the F150 road tests, it rides much better and has more visibility than the CT had and most importantly has the instrument panel where it should be..in front of the driver instead of off to the side like the CT. Give Ford and yes, GM another year or so and they will be providing much more competition for Elon and Co.

Correct. I was excited about the reviews of the Chevy Silverado EV however, when I visited the dealership last week, they said they already had 80 reservation holders and in the last few months, only one truck came in, which was a work truck version which no one wanted. Obviously Chevy is not interested in satisfying market demand at this time. Others will pick up market share instead of them.

I don’t think the charging in the Ford is limited by battery thermals, I think it is limited by heating in the HV wiring harnesses, so tweaking of the charging curve would involve going to larger conductors throughout the harness.
For me, the Flash would be the sweet spot, if it were not for the absence of ventilated seats. I personally don’t find the big glass roof in the Lariat to add much value. A Flash with an option to add ventilated seats would be perfect for me.

Not favoring either one here as this is a tradeoff. The big battery trucks have more range but less payload and tow. The smaller battery like the rivian and cyberTruck get less range but haul and tow more. And I would imagine not dragging around a preloaded pickup has advantages. On the other hand my old K 1500 rides like a truck when it is empty. :)

I don’t agree Dave. You and Kyle never did anything different from Tom yet your truck ran out before you ran out of miles. Zero buffer also. Big problem if it can’t take a little work without maintaining accuracy on the miles left or state of charge. That has to be fixed. Before I buy I want to know what I can get for miles and the charge curve. I don’t mind stopping and charging to 80 like Tom says as long as I can get a reasonable charge rate. I would never be like Kyle in the cyber truck and charge that many times but a long day behind the wheel is necessary. Heck that wasn’t even with a load.

If a F150 Lightning was to be succesful in Ireland , it would have to have rear wheel steering and it would need to be about 3 feet shorter in length. That means the bed would reduce to 2.5 feet capacity which would be crappy for most construction and farm use. So that means , there would need to be a pass through from the bed area into the cabin area , by folding down the rear seats , current F 150 doesnt have this. While the F 150 Lightning is brillant , to make it work in Europe there is a tonne of design changes needed. Almost a total rework of the design is needed. Id keep the main rolling chassis , helps to dampen road vibrations , id keep the battery unit isolated from the frame and use it as a tuned mass damper . Crucially id design the battery pack to be modular , so can add extra range , in 15kg to 20kg quick fit modules. The reason being 90 per cent of the time , 80 mile range would be eneough , when i need extra range id add modules by hand , just like loading luggage , quick easy no tools. When those modules are not needed for travelling they become a powerwall working all year around to power my home. Another crucial design feature all new trucks should have is a sleeping configuration. Remove typical centre console , add hatch into frunk area from main cabin. Achieve over 7 feet fully stretched out area . Also one last thing the height of the bonnet needs to be lowered about 6 inches , to make viewing out more pleasant , cooling fans need to be relocated , so frunk space not lost. Other than that the F 150 ligtning is the best overall Ev truck available , price wise , size wise and useability wise.

Is it still expensive when we look at the cheaper Ice truck including fuel costs? It's been my experience so far owning Tesla cars that the higher price and lowering operating costs are about the same for an ice car with fuel costs added in. Ice car pricing is border line deceptive since they never talk about fuel costs when calculating your true monthly payments.

      How so?
That $60,000 "Flash" version after the federal rebate with 320 miles of range is a no brainer over a regular F-150.

That tells me the managment of Ford , are behind in there goals. A battery costs approx 10k , so a lightning should only be 10k above a gas truck. The problem is they are 20 to 30k above where they should be , thats before the dealers , grift extra again on top.

A Truck needs to tow. 80 miles is not acceptable.

Most people don’t tow lol 😂 with a f-150 and even if they do tow most don’t to tow more then 100 miles 😂 . Think 🤔 of this if you own a boat 🚤 you live within 50 miles of the ocean 🌊 or a lake lol 😂

@@williampisano7573 If you don't tow, buy yourself an electric SUV. Drives way better than a truck. If you tow buy a Silverado.

Why do people think it only tows 80 miles? Was there some video that lied about the results?
