  • It's not very well known that BMC used to make classic Minis in Spain in the 1960s and 1970s. Watch to find out more about this Authi Mini

    Body panels were also made in Spain by NMQ, to a higher steel quality than those by British Steel also. That's why AUTHI Minis are the least prone to rust than any others. The whole car had to be produced in Spain except minor parts at the begining like Smiths gauges later replaced by Veglia Bressel from Spain.

    • @bernardwarr4187
      @bernardwarr4187 Год назад

      I have read information to say the body come from England. What’s your information?

    • @RobinTheMini
      @RobinTheMini Год назад +8

      @@bernardwarr4187 that information is incorrect. AUTHI Mini bodies were 100% built in Spain with Spanish steel. It was mandatory in Franco's regime. Also, Authi founder company was a steel company which previously manufactured engines for other factories in Spain (Renault, etc). Only the very first units of the Morris 1100 (first model built by Authi) were made with assembled bodypanels from the UK until the steel press was finished. Even the electrics and gauges were identical to Smiths but made in Spain by Laviral and other electric parts were copies from Lucas, made by Spanish Femsa.

    • @bernardwarr4187
      @bernardwarr4187 Год назад +1

      @@RobinTheMini many thanks for the information. What is the best thing about the Spanish mini, compared to the standard English model? And what is the worse thing? On the 1300 cooper model, is it possibly to change to a more common CV joint on the front axle?

    • @RobinTheMini
      @RobinTheMini Год назад +4

      @@bernardwarr4187 Once BL took control of AUTHI in 1970 and matched specifications and brochures with UK Minis, Mk3 Spanish and British 850/1000 cars from late 1970 onwards were almost identical (except CV joints, steering wheels, etc.) Spanish 1275GT is a traditional round nose bodyshell and dash, and the 1300 Cooper is very similar to the Italian Cooper. Previous Spanish Mk2 Minis built by AUTHI as a 100% independent company were more luxurious, with leather seats, wooden steering wheels, disc brakes and Hydrolastic suspension, ashtrays everywhere, etc. (not very profitable for the Spanish market of the 60's). Best thing about AUTHI Minis is the steel quality which was a bit less prone to rust than UK Minis (not just due to the climate) and much less than Rover Minis. Also heater were factory standard for all cars. Yes, it is possible and nowadays it is not uncommon to have the CV joints upgraded.

      En los primeros Morris 1100 la calidad de fabricación y los controles no eran muy fiables. Por eso, después cambiaron la marca a Austin para cambiar la percepción en el mercado.

    Not sure which is more adorable, the Mini or the doggo! This car is like the coming together of my favourite car people, Fezza, HubNut, Twin-Cam(Ed) and Idriveaclassic (Steph). Shame circumstances aren't different, otherwise this would make a great crossover / collab. If it doesn't have it already, I'd be tempted to fit electronic ignition, but totally understand if you wanted to keep it totally standard. What a great little car though, and in my favourite colour. They just make people happy! No grumps trying to race you and prove a point, or refuse to allow you out of a side-road. The world needs more happy-making cars!

    Great to see the Mini! I was reading a book about BMC/Leyland just this last month and although I knew about the Italian Innocenti minis, I’d not come across the AUTHI minis until then!
    I grew up round minis as my Dad ran mini pickups - we often rode highly illegally in the back and remember being told “if you see a police car, get your head down!”
    The fuel economy was proven when Dad had his pickup stolen in the 60s (well before I was born). Some football fans from up north needed to get back from Wembley and stole a string of cars til they ran out of fuel to make the journey. We were in Bedfordshire and as Dad had just filled up his pickup, it was found somewhere on Tyneside! 🤣 That must’ve been a long journey!
    The last one we had was a Clubman estate - my sister and I used to sleep in the back with the seats down under a blanket on journeys back from the seaside. We’d often come back to find men crouched down and inspecting the underside of the car - they were amazed it still had its original sills even then! (mid 80s). I guess rot is less of an issue out in Spain - no bad thing.
    Great car, Justin!

    Mini's also were made here in Australia from March 1961, known as the Morris 850. Here they were Morris's & then mover on to Leyland
    In October 1978 local production of Minis ceased in Leyland's Enfield plant
    in New South Wales. A total of 176,284 Minis had been built.
    So there is a Ferrari F430, BMW M4, A Mini & now some special "yellow" car... Gee if you keep going on like this.. You will become another Shmee150 😂🤣😂🤣

    • @FezzaYT

    Thank you! That brings back many memories. I bought a second hand mini cooper 1000 in 1974 and have very much enjoyed driving it a few years. It had these funny windows that slide sideways, special front to rear coupled fluid suspension and a rear number plate on hinges that would stay visible if you had to drive with an open bonnet. It always felt like the gear stick would fly off. We went on vacation with it, four people and luggage on the roof. I was hart broken when it finally broke down a couple of years later. I bought a new mini 1100 in 1978 and have since switched to ford focus with a ford escort xr3i in between. Driving the mini just felt more or less the same as the escort & focus, very easy to handle and an absolute joy to drive.

    So it is not necessarily a bad thing that they were produced in spain? :-)
