An interesting new viewpoint has emerged on the Ian Astbury chokehold drama. Recorded from the front row and captured by @bruceginevan5084 you can see a whole new angle on the drama that unfolded at Tuesday nights concert in Washington DC.

Context?
From what I saw and heard from others in the vicinity, the chokehold guy was mad because allegedly the long haired guy had been bumping into his daughter or the girl he was with. He's done this forever. 💜💜 I saw them in the 80's & he threw his mic stand at a guard to save a fan. He's amazing. 💪💪💪
circa 2002, at Milwaukee's Summerfest, The Cult were doing what they do so well. At some point, a skirmish broke out when 3 huge dudes began pushing their way towards the stage. I heard the voice of a friend of mine who is 6'5" and not exactly lanky: "I'm just saying...KNOCK IT OFF." Then, I saw arms swinging. Realizing that most of our friends were further towards the back, I thought that I should help my friend so, I jumped at one of the bad guys and hooked his nose. Then, I saw the LARGEST blur of an arm that I've ever seen flash in front of my face. As that horrific vision was blinding me, I also felt my finger unhook from the bad guy's nose and, my entire body taken out of my own control as a distance of approximately 6 feet seemingly instantly opened between he and me. I was able to turn my head back and see a gorgeous woman shaking her head like a scolding mother while (presumably) her male partner - who had me wrapped up like a sack of potatoes - said, "Uh uh, dude. They're throwing punches. Uh uh." I said, "But, that's my friend." The woman continued shaking her head while the man reiterated, "Uh uh, brother. Uh uh. They're throwing punches there, dude. Uh uh." I turned to look at the skirmish, my friend, the bad guys... looking towards the stage I saw beautiful ladies and then POW, a SPOT LIGHT shone directly at the skirmish (only a few rows from stage). There was Ian Astbury shouting into the microphone, "THERE!" as he pointed at the skirmish. SUDDENLY, he TOSSED the mic and full on stage dived into the center of the skirmish. EVERY person up to me dropped! Me, still in the grasp of ... eh hem... my hero? I had a straight line of site to Mr. Astbury who had somehow managed to land sort of with his back to the stage. As the fallen peepholes in the first couple of rows lifted themselves from the ground, Mr. Astbury - his eyes were ROLLING around in his head when I looked at him - LAUNCHED himself from his pseudo-landing spot directly at the faltering big guy skirmish. I don't remember how it ended because, well, I'm really short and when the bodies rose up, I couldn't see anything. Later, my friend said he took a couple tough shots to the ribs. Hehe... if that arm had contacted my head I'd probably have died. Here I thought my experience was special :):):) Nothing's ever going to erase that friggin' HILARIOUS image of one of my favorite rock n roll singer's eyes rolling round his head and him rocketing at the bullies. I've mostly tried to avoid contacting large muscle men since then. God that scolding woman was beautiful :)
That was weird. Did anyone else notice that the guy he defended tried to kiss him at the end?
In the early 2k's he smashed a tambourine on stage and forcefully threw the pieces into the crowd..I still have a tiny scar on my forehead, lucky I closed my eyes just in time. I have no idea what he was angry about, my theory is because the Cult weren't headliners of this fest in spite of being the most accomplished band in the entire lineup at the time.

Mad respect to the vocalist. Too many times, they let things go just for the show. But sometimes, they need to intervene and let everyone feel safe

I thought "years and years ago" this was the thing to do... Bras were flying one after another, weren't they? Now, it seems like things like this don't fly anymore. No bra throwing, no toplessness. I would be afraid of like being arrested or something. Even for just throwing a bra, let alone going topless. Or just being kicked out at least. Things have really changed.

I went to the GNR-Metallica show in July 1992 and in between sets the camera would pan to various girls in the audience who flashed boobs! Fast forward to 2023 and the GNR show was just Axl making corny jokes. No bare boobs anywhere. Sucks getting old.

The first time I saw the cult, GnR opened for them. The next time I saw them, they opened for Metallica. The last time I saw them was a little stage at an outdoor "day of rock " type festival. It was raining and full of mud they had every excuse to suck but they kicked ass instead. I remember Ian saying "you're young, free and American. Celebrate that."
Would've loved to see the Cult and INXS on the same stage. You don't get much cooler than Ian Astbury and Michael Hutchence. (You're so missed, Michael. I'm sure Ian feels the same way.)
Idk why that teared me up. Maybe bc these rock stars are world travelers. They know as much as we Americans complain. We ARE FREE and safe from most atrocities across the globe. IAN has always been self aware. It's in his lyrics!!
@hnybee113 that was around 1999 or so. I remember staind was the new big band bc that song they had was on the radio every 5 minutes. The Cult were crowded together on a little outside stage with hardly any room everything was wet and muddy but they were really good they played like they were in an arena or something instead of a small
rainy muddy New Orleans park.
From what I gathered from other posts of people that were there, the guy that was being choked and then was hugging Ian had actually smashed his was through people to the front and a man's daughter was abused by him with the same disregard and disrespect.

The dude hugging on him was the instigator he had pushed his was to the front smashing the tall dudes daughter and tall dude put him in a choke hold, hugging dude eventually got kicked out and dude that protected his daughter stayed. Pisses me off that chump played the victim.
@@badmonkey2222 I went by what was said of the incident. I wasn't there. It takes conviction to jump off a stage and confront someone, he wasn't backing down. Called them out on behaviour. If in fact the daughter was shoved, the second man was in the wrong. A choke hold is not however the solution. Again, I wasn't there.
@@sherrieartist101westerfield apparently you don't have kids because somebody basically runs my daughter over and steps all over her a chokehold is going to be the least of your worries, and the guy that was hugging all over him got thrown out because they knew it was him, he just saw the end of it the guy choking the guy he didn't see his daughter get bum rushed and trampled. Anyways yeah if you go to research it you'll see the whole story.

What a badass. Saved a fan from being chocked straightened out that clown then empowered fan who was manhandled and got back to seamlessly start the verse to a badass song. Ian you never cease to amaze. I have a special place in my heart for these guys.

Yes he will.... That's because he shoved his way to the front of the crowd- who all waited much longer for their place at the concert and then shoved a small girl who was right at the front. It was a protective father who put him in the choke and is lucky he didn't get much worse for what he did. He was viewed at as a victim by Ian; but that's just not the case. If the man really did just throw a rear naked on someone for no good reason, he would have been arrested and charged by police.
Seriously. That moment made that dude's millennium.
@jaymiller6009 I also understand that the reason why the girl's father got so upset is because the guy tried to grope and be sexually inappropriate with his young daughter who was a teenager. Ian found out about the true story later and had the guy thrown out.

I was there!!!! People started fighting and it wasn’t good. I had a lady pushing herself closer and closer to other people to get to see him and we were at the very front. Then a bartender buddy flipped me off with both his hands because I didn’t let her

I saw The Cult live with my dad at Portsmouths GuildHall. Ian hasnt lost a step genuinely incredible, they were amazing.

Saw The Cult live in Lisbon in... I think it was '93, a guy was shooting up next to me, Ian saw it, asked if he was shooting up and nodded disapprovingly, then another guy, or the same guy, don't remember, kept throwing big chunks of grass from the ground (it was a soccer stadium) at the band, Ian went down from the stage towards the guy, I couldn't see what happened next, I was a kid, but reports I heard afterwards said Ian bit the guys' ear (!) The grass throwing stopped. The Cult rocked on until today.

I was actually here. seconds before this video, Ian himself was down there choking everyone... men, women and children. after about 20 fans were unconscious, he got back on stage and was pissed someone ELSE was choking someone and Ian was mad that he, himself, wasn't doing the choking.
and yes, Ian choked me also. I pretended to go unconscious so he would feel good. I'm his number one fan, so I didn't want him to hate me for not going unconscious when he wanted me to.

nah, douchebag was in our city, actually ran through soundcheck then cancelled because he didn't like the ticket sales. Many of us driven hours just to turn around because he cancelled last minute.
