As a Maori, these are historical events as told by a white man. BUT the talk about the head is true. The head is sacred (as it contains knowledge) so, to do that to an enemies head is the ultimate insult. We dont have swear words in our language. I remember asking my grandmother about it. The worst word in our language is Upokokohua, which means 'to boil your head'.

Just went to Waitangi 2 months ago bro, didn't realize Maori signed the wrong treaty of Waitangi translated incorrectly by a British settlor. I'm keeping my head down from now on standing more in solidarity for Maori when it comes to tapu land and Maori rights - Whatu ngarongaro te tangata te tangata, toitū te whenua. 🤟 Maori got dealt a hard deal the least I can do is stand with them moving forward. People will perish but the land is permanent

Not everything about the head was true and factual. Our people never stacked them in a pile to use them to play games. With that korero alone I would call that whole section out as incorrect.

I'm from London, Nigerian heritage but lived in Perth, Australia for a while. Maori, Cook Islanders and people from PNG are some of the nicest people I met. Loved the community spirit and I found them so welcoming. I used to braid hair as a side hustle and they all loved braids and cornrows, plus were into hip hop, Afrobeats and Azonto at that time. I regretted that I never made it to NZ or the islands before returning home. Maybe next time hey. Love the Haka too, I legit watch Haka vids on RUclips.

Tā moko (Māori tattoos) are an interesting topic, most of the facial ones were and are about whakapapa (genealogy) and social status. Hongi Hika is definitely famous, but there are arguably more famous Māori (both male and female), but they will differ from each tribe and region. The "haka" that is commonly shown, as it is here, is the haka called "Ka Mate" (worth a google search bro, pretty interesting origin), and there are thousands of other haka, some short, some long. James Cook most definitely did not come in peace lol. The head is the most tapu ("sacred" for lack of a better word) of the body, so to take a head of an enemy was a big step on their mana (not even going to translate this word cause there is literally no accurate translation haha).
Some points are accurate in this, some are vary depending on the tribe and region, and some are just wrong. But thanks for checking us out anyway bro! Big ups!! If you want to see some modern Māori stuff, search up Te Matatini (the National Senior Kapa Haka festival), a good watch.

dont know much about our history then, sure they dont do that now and became outlawed as colonialism spread throughout the land as did the reo (language) & moko (facial tattoo) only making a comeback in the last 20 - 30 yrs, with the arrival of pakeha and the stripping of resources and shipping trade began nothing was safe nor sacred burial caves were ransacked and artifacts/taonga belonging to the dead including skulls were taken across the other side of the world ending in private collections and museums only to be returned within the last 20-30yrs, for in depth details you would have to commit to doing a bit of research in to our history I did mine back in the 80s after I had left school was a great journey through museum archives and local libraries all the best if you decide to embark on you own journey

It’s not surprising people did these things back then, as humanity was less advanced and many groups of people committed atrocities, regardless of ethnicity. I think learning from history rather than trying to erase history out of embarrassment. No need to be embarrassed, it’s not a racial thing, it’s a human issue from those days ❤😊

Maori, Samoans, Hawaiians, Rarotongans, Tongans, Tahitians and other cultures of Polynesia have a similar or same history and languages. Where our cultures, languages and histories differ is when we split off from each other and spread over the Polynesian islands. We were the great navigators of the sea as our ancestors mapped out the pacific using the stars but in saying this it is a lost art and Micronesians are re teaching Polynesians this practice again.

Hongi Hika was a power hungry man and saw the advantage of the gun. He travelled from top of the north towards wellington, going to each tribe in their area, preaching join me or die. He knew Maori warfare so he knew how to best them and there were many who chose not to. Little did he know he was being used from the British to destroy his own kind, without lifting a finger. How he was defeated was by a message sent via Purerehua to the next tribe he was going to visit. They ambushed him before he reached the next village, there was a Major flaw with using guns. Gunshot residue. This dulls the ears and nose senses, which Maori are solely reliant on for preventing sneak attacks in bushy areas.

I had to comment before watching the rest of your reaction video, i think at 7:59 you asked something like "What is the difference between Samoans & Maori"..
The difference is NZ Maori are from New Zealand and Samoans are from Samoa, New Zealand and Samoa are both "Polynesian" which is situated in the Polynesian Ocean - which is a Geography lesson in it self. Easiest way to explain is to compare this situation to the movie "Moana", the movie gives a "general idea" of how things work in Polynesian Culture.
Samoans and NZ Maori are generally the same but that will come down to genetics, culture, traditions, beliefs & language.
One thing i enjoy about this video is the reactions to our ancestors and their traditions and beliefs back then, i really am enjoying. But what the video that you are reacting too, is implying is that these traditions and cultures are still being practiced. This was a long time ago, before NZ was colonised by the British and the "Treaty of Waitangi" was signed. Their are stories from our elders e.g. Grandparents, Great - grandparents etc. They share of the experiences they had as children growing up.
Very interesting video, there was a point where our culture, traditions and language were dying, but with our Prime Minister now there is hope.

Your pronunciation is better than most. I've heard straight ignorant versions like Murry, Moldy and even Mario, just to point out a few.
The old Māori in my opinion need to be honoured for the effort against the colonials as we are one of very few culture who still retain ownership of the land, yet governed by the crown. I don't know if that is what you can truly call ownership hahaha
In my upbringing I was taught the land does not belong to man, man belong to the land. We come from the earth, we will return to the earth. Pretty much meaning we are only caretakers of the land.
With alot of Māori history only being recorded by colonials and Māori with stories of events through carving or landmarks. As a Māori myself it is hard to make a clear picture or find a truth from a past that wasn't my own. The only common thing I have to relate to its rich history is blood.
