Thanks, Maria, for being our guide to Oaxacan culture & for your work at preserving Zapotec & helping the language to flourish again! Minority languages and cultures must be taught and encouraged - now more than ever! You're doing great work. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You're a good tour guide. It's good that you want to have a written language but what are you going to convey with it? What ideas of importance do you have to share?
@@AbandonedMaine Well, the Zapotec language has been written since the pre-Columbian era. What I am doing is reviving the language through social media and my platform. With the alphabet that was created by the zapotec community . I as a grad student can help alongside with my peers create the alphabet visually good so we can share it to the community, most importantly to the kids.
Maria is an absolutely amazing human being. I have enjoyed your videos for years,. Maria will certainly be a person I remember. I would love to see a follow up on her journey! Keep being a good human!
I love mole too. It is kinda hard to describe the taste other than calling out elements in it. But the combination is really what makes it. Mole with fresh tortillas is one of my favorite meals hands down.
The movie Arrival (I think?) is about aliens coming and the gvmt hiring a linguist to communicate with them, really cool movie would recommend. Agreed that Ari would have been a better option haha
I love when people find their talent and fully embrace it and you sir have definitely found yours, almost 54 years and I'm still searching for mine lol. I've been watching your videos for a few years now and I'm always blown away
Thank you for this Ari. I love that you are bringing these rare languages and cultures to the mainstream. I challenge to you try learning the Yaqui language please! Indigenous to Sonora, Mexico and Arizona.
It's funny because in that language, "Hello" sounds a lot like "Adios" (or at least how he was pronouncing it) so I kept expecting him to walk away every time he said hello haha
I used to work with some Finnish ladies while in Azerbaijan. The Finnish word for 'yes' sounds like the Azeri word for 'no'. There were some misunderstandings for sure!
Brooo, I’ve been watching Xiaoma since early 2020. Never would’ve expected him to learn the language my ancestors spoke. It’s crazy recognizing some of the words he spoke and seeing him interact with people from neighboring pueblos of my parents. Awesome dude. Keep it going
I like this channel! This was especially interesting to me because I have grown Zapotec jalapeno peppers in my garden the last few years. Highly recommended!
I don't know why he put the subtitle like that because she didn't say anything that would mean 'bro' and that type of words is like never used by older women.
I'd love to see you learn cape verdean creole! All the dialects from each island! This would be so wholesome (I'm bias to São Vicente creole because it's what I speak hehe)
Hey Xiaoma, big fan! I'm doing my working holiday in Australia and I think you should try learning Aboriginal Kriol, which is a collective dialect of first nations people here, maybe visit down under and give it a go
Thats so funny, im in a small town in the Texas panhandle, but grew up eating Mexican candies. We always ate the one he loved. Love sharing cultures!! ❤
Yo nací cerca de esa región y conozco un poquito. Pero Ud está muy por encima. Muchas, muchas gracias por interesarse en nuestros lenguajes. También sé que Ud habla maya.
Hey Xioma, if you want to practice Zapotec there is a youtuber called El Huarache Oaxaqueno who converses with older folks who speak Zapotec or other dialects from Oaxaca. It would be cool to see a collab!
That is awesome! The agua de chilacayote is delicious, wish I could get some around where I live. I’ve only had it a couple times. And mole is just amazing.
I’ve always wanted to learn to at least be able to be get to a basic conversation in another language. What would be your #1 tip on learning a different language? Also, the woman that guided you, she spoke better English than most ppl I know. She is awesome!!
Ari,you are an amazing man. Not only in your language skills but anyone would love you to come and eat with them….you eat anything. I liked this one today, these people were lovely.😊
Xioma please learn “mixteco”!! There are so many of us who speak it in California too and im sure out of state as well. Depending on region, it’s very differently spoken as well, just like zapoteco! I’d love to teach you mixteco from our region though!☺️
So I was just thinking the other day “I wonder if xioma knows about oaxacan language…” I just recently started working around Oakland, CA and I hear “mexican” looking people speak a language that did not sound like Spanish. My coworker told me it was Oaxacan. It sounds so cool when listening to conversations because it sounds like nothing im used to hearing. Thanks for this!

This is amazing! Thank you for allowing me to give you a tour of Oaxacan gastronomy and language.

That lady that was with you was good-hearted and totally awesome!
High Fives!
That woman's goals are admirable. Take pride in the language of your ancestors!
Sad that the parents have that stigma from school.
Each village has their own type of Zapotec language..those from the mountains don't even understand those from the valley..crazy !

Gran video Xiaoma, eres la muestra de como se debe dejar atrás el miedo o vergüenza para aprender cualquier idioma.
Your reaction to mole is literally me every single time I eat it and I'm Mexican 😂 🎉 mole is soooooo good
Coffee Mole sauce is best in my opinion. It can be added to such a variety of dishes.
@@popkillspoetryx8791 I live in England and never had it before... Can you taste any sweetness from the chocolate or what?

What a sweetheart! You can tell how proud she is of her culture!

Maria speaking Korean out of nowhere too?! Go girl👏🏼 Dying to try that mole 🤤
God bless you and all your days Xiaoma
It seems the rarer the language the more gracious the speakers are trying to understand people trying to learn it.
My man!!!! Now you need to do a video speaking Nahuatl please!
I learn so much with every video you make. Thank you, Xiaoma!
If LA holds some kind of international food festival, Ari should attend and order food in 20 languages. He'll need a posse to eat it all.

So awesome to hear this language, my gf speaks Chinanteco and was just telling me about some of the other ones related to hers. 😃
