    I remember the day my father brought me to the Volvo garage in 1990 to collect our 'new car'. At this point, I had only ever known old second-hand jobs, Talbot Horizons, Peugeots etc. And there, parked outside, with our surname printed on the reg plate, was a brand new Volvo 740 GLE in gun metal grey metallic, with grey leather, electric sunroof and the same wheels as yours. It was like another planet. That lap belt in the back was often my seat, as the youngest. One of the happiest memories of my life..

    People don’t realise how good these cars are, and incredibly robust. I was offered a 240 estate 1990 in a farm yard. It was covered in moss, mould all over the seats, and had been sat 2-3 years. It started with a new battery ( took a while) stale fuel, the hand brake was jammed and the shoes delaminated but no problem to do I drove it home ( on the trade insurance) cleaned it up and it was totally rust free and I drove it for 2 years. Cam belt was an hour’s work, did a clutch, easy job, really great car.
    So I bought an 850T5 in 2009, it’s passed every mot since, and the latest one just this morning, it’s literally never gone wrong in 14 years, just tyres, a cam belt, servicing, and swapped out the leaking nivomats for standard springs/shocks. Volvo for life . As the ad used to said. Being in the trade Ive owned everything, BMW, Mercedes, dozens of cars, those old Volvos are best most reliable cars I ever had. And the T5 cost me £680. 14 years of motoring for £680. ( don’t mention the fuel consumption though)

      I'm hearing so many good things about Volvos. The only ones we've had previously were our 'dailies' - a pair of 2006 XC90's. The only reason we decided not to keep them on the road was the tax - it shot up to over £600 per year each. The cars, themselves, did us proud. My one even survived an attack from a barn roof during Storm Eunice last year!

    I'd forgotten the ball bearing device on the washers. When installed right, it stopped the water flowing back to the washer bottle out of the tubes. These 740s were full of little tricks.

    Sorry, didn't see the first video. Shows how long a good car will run if looked after. If you haven't seen them, watch High Peak autos Matthew review older cars that still have plenty of life in them with some TLC. I wonder how many of the state of the art EVs that are being promoted now will last thirty years or get to 300k miles ???

      No word of a lie, we were looking at his channel about 10 minutes ago! One of the ones I subscribe to and enjoy, both from a liking his content and “he’s good at doing this RUclips thing” perspective 😀
      Spot on about modern cars. They’re built to be obsolete in a few years from the start. No money in building cars that last. It’s such a shame. There’s so much about new cars that’s good (safety, economy, etc), but they seem to have avoided building cars that will live more than 10 years.

    Great video on an awesome car. I currently have the 740 estate 1991 face lift model. I must be the only person in the country, that that would love a face drop. Being a full time unpaid carer for our disabled daughter, this is but a dream. But on a positive vibe, we have a car that can be worked on by ourselves. Also now it has some degree of street cred.😊

    • @UKBarnFinds
      @UKBarnFinds  Год назад

      The clocks were changed in 2004. MOT testers record what the clocks say, not what the mileage is*. Recording MOT's online didn't start until 2006. All explained in the first video and the original auction listing (links below). Rule No. 1 - never trust the government 😂 Thanks for watching.
      * Ironically, the clocks in there now are bust again, so I'll need to change them. Look at the last two MOT's. Acccording to the the recorded mileage, F407 MPM hasn't done any miles since 2019. It still says 71,090 today, and I've been all over the place in it.

    The only Volvo owned was a 245 estate, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, anyhoo and it was yet another under £500 quid car and surprisingly it always got me where I then when married, big mistake, as I said it got me where I needed to go eventually but she was a feckin gas hog and if she was wind and watertight I could cope with the mechanical work courtesy of friend in the MTsection and liberal use of the pit or hoist on base for under sealing the current motor oh how I wish that there was such a thing as lanogaurd in the 80s. I also learned very quickly not to lather on underseal when your so drunk because I undersealed the exhaust and the smell of bitumen hung around for weeks
