In 2011, i played spring powered airsoft for the first time, and in the wargame only spring powered were allowed, no AEG and GBB/R... it was quite fun... the following year, using a shotgun to play with AEG and GBB/R.. 2017 started with AEG until now 😁
True but, as with every hobby, if one cant afford at least a solid starter kit to get going properly, then it may not be the hobby the person should pursue unfortunately. :(

Hey, I got a spring powered gun they're not bad at all. I use an Ameoba Striker which about $200 worth of upgrades. Thing hits 3.2j.
