  • 67. Recitative (B-T-A-S & Chorus II)
    Zion:
Nun ist der Herr zur Ruh gebracht.
    The Faithful:
    Mein Jesu, gute Nacht!
    Zion:
Die Müh ist aus, die unsre Sünden ihm gemacht.
    The Faithful:
    Mein Jesu, gute Nacht!
    Zion:
    O selige Gebeine,
Seht, wie ich euch mit Buß und Reu beweine,
Daß euch mein Fall in solche Not gebracht!
    The Faithful:
    Mein Jesu, gute Nacht!
    Zion:
    Habt lebenslang
    Vor euer Leiden tausend Dank,
Daß ihr mein Seelenheil so wert geacht'.
    The Faithful:
    Mein Jesu, gute Nacht!
    68. Chorus I & II
Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder
Und rufen dir im Grabe zu:
    Ruhe sanfte, sanfte ruh!
    Ruht, ihr ausgesognen Glieder!
    Euer Grab und Leichenstein
    Soll dem ängstlichen Gewissen
    Ein bequemes Ruhekissen
    Und der Seelen Ruhstatt sein.
Höchst vergnügt schlummern da die Augen ein.
    Peter Schreier, Evangelist
    Ernst Gerold Schramm, Jesus
    Siegmund Nimsgern, Judas & Pilatus
    Helen Donath, soprano
    Julia Hamari, alto
    Horst R. Laubenthal, tenor
    Walter Berry, bass

Richter's Bach organ performances are definitive interpretations and have never been surpassed. His early death was a tragedy.

These last parts of the St. Matthew Passion are beautiful beyond description. Although I am not religious, they bring tears to my eyes, and that does not happen very often to me. The lyrics speak a very tender language as well. Just an incredible, immortal piece or music. And an amazing performance!

The spiritual depth and profound nature of this recitative at the beginning is supernatural. Genuine proof of the divine. Never have I heard anything so dark and grief-stricken.

What a wonderful musical offering to the planet.
The discords eloquently express the sorrow at laying Jesus in his tomb. Bach at his ultimate. What a wonderful cultural and religious icon for the planet. He is truly the greatest ever composer and communicator of emotions through music.

This final chorus is the most sublime part of the great passion and Richter's is the finest interpretation I know of. Scorsese used this piece in Casino and Pasolini liked it so much that he used it both in Accattone as well as in Il vangelo secondo Matteo.

This must surely be one of the finest gems in all music. It captures both the grief at Christ's (and all others') death in the recitative. The following Chorale contains the eternal hope that death is just the end of life on this planet, followed by transition into another state, where the spirit lives on in peace (Ruh').
Hence the common expression that, "Life is just a journey.".
Hopefully, to something more fulfilling and better.

Just only God himself could inspire J S Bach to write this music and words according to Jesus life, passion and death it must have been his true hope to get through death in the same way Jesus did. I bless God and J S Bach who is at this very moment with Him in his kingdom for all eternity, Amen

Is it wrong that I miss Richter's and others' romantic approach to this master work? I've seen the Matthaus Passion twice but both times a more "authentic" style with a smaller choir and orchestra and period instruments. But I much prefer the older recordings where the lushness of the orchestration is literally overwhelming

Aunque no es tan magnifica como Kommt ihr Töchter o Erbarme dich, alcanza los niveles de sublimidad más altos. Comienza y termina en tragedia; la exaltación queda para el Domingo de Pascua.

@Menegoth Go away. How terrible are you of a person that when someones loved one dies, you deny them comfort? If you're going to be an athiest that wanders about telling people their beliefs are wrong, spare us your unsettling presence and do it somewhere else.

  • @Menegoth
    @Menegoth 12 лет назад +1

@bonumfatum457 If people truly believed their loved one has gone to heaven and is enjoying eternal bliss, they wouldn't be sad and crying would they? And if they are, they either don't believe what they preach in the first place, or they are selfish hypocrites.
See, another example of why religion and logic are mutually exclusive.
