We were changing out the bridge and thanks to your video were able to remove some nasty scratches. It brought a tear to the old man's eyes when he saw it restored to its former glory.

I thought I made it easy to see in the video, but basically just 800-3000 grit sandpaper and medium cut and fine cut meguiar's buffing/polishing compounds. You can get it all at your local auto parts store!
Nice repair! I need to rescue an Ibanez someone purposely gouged the front of and the fill method ( CA and/or Polyurathane ) just aren't working. So I was wondering if this was possible. Thanks for the tutorial! As for Grant I think everyone loved him, even those that say they didn't. He had a bad headache for a few days and he succumb to an aneurysm. Massive surprise as I think he was the most fit one on the teams. We didn't need to lose another good one. I say this to everyone... if something don't feel right for a day that's possibly normal, but 2 days? Go to the ER.
I have an Ibanez AZ2402 and when I was adjusting an intonation screw my hand slipped and I accidentally scrapped the top coat with the screwdriver...It looks awful. I don't think I can fix it myself, I just do not have the patience or the steady hands for this kind of work, but I'm hoping I can at least find someone who can fix it for me :( BTW you did a phenomenal job, those scratches looked DEEP and you made it look basically brand new! No trace of them!!

Maybe you can find a local body shop to try to fix it for you. back in the day I needed a guitar clear coated and asked a local shop if they could spray it for me the next time they did a car(they always make more clear up than they use). Surprisingly they said yes! You never know until you try. Good luck!

The guitar was a poly finish. You can probably polish out the lacquer but it's usually best to scuff it all up and spray a new coat when it comes to lacquer.
Good on ya mate. I never understood the hideous Townshend approach to guitars - arguably guitars possess souls. The Aquacoat filler of yours is great, and I've used it to completely hide small nail dings into an otherwise prestine - and indeed semi-vintage - french polished Panhuyzen classical after tip from Rob O'Brien.
What finish do you think was on this guitar poly or nitro? I think martin guitars uses a thin coat of nitro so it may not work as well. That makes me think this guitar was lower cost and had a thick plastic coating.

I was going to say SUPERGLUE fills polyester and polyurethane finishes really well but when the hell did Grant Imahara die? He was truly was instrumental in the last few seasons of myth busters' ideas and tests - he was growing on me as a person and an engineer. I too am a craftsman and that just hurts hearing that he's dead. All this especially after one of my cats just died this last Friday! It all seems that when it rains it pours until it floods! Thank you for the video I wouldn't have known if not for this.

@@ForsytheVideo It's best to use dish soap heavily diluted for wet sanding. It lubricates but this is only suggested for areas where water won't get onto or into bare wood.

$12 from harbor freight for the pads and rough polish, $22 for fine grit polish from an auto store, another $10-15 for sand paper from the same auto store. Maybe $2 for Window cleaner. What is your comment meant to imply? Maybe not many have all that stuff but they can easily obtain it.
I liked this a lot - I renovate guitars and Impresses by the polishing technique, one very interesting finishing technique I use is to make a very thin scumble out of butchers block liquid polish the merest hint of pure danish oil in a thin wash of methalyated spirits (you call this summat different in the USA), then buff the f**k out of it on max speed, I kid you not it is a finish like mirror !! - try it guys....
You can't see the wood, the whiter color is the scraped finish. There was still enough finish beneath it to be polished and luckily whoever did the damage did not get through the finish completely.

I have a black les Paul custom and the previous owners wife scrubbed it with a dish washing sponge and abrasive side what do you think I need to do? As it’s a les Paul and I don’t want to screw it up ,
It's sad but I bet there was a guy who kept pawning his guitar for drugs and got to the point where he thought that etching that into the guitar would not only be a constant reminder, but would also reduce the value of it to where he wouldnt be able to pawn it. I guess he slipped up.

I had a weird theory about this, on why you'd even do that to a guitar in the first place. It would be interesting if someone scratched that into their guitar with the intentions of never selling it, and it possibly got stolen and pawned off? Because the irony is too great & I know any thief can come up with a quick cover story of "fell on hard times, need the money" Just a thought, I'm actually going to carve that quote into my guitar right now LOL I don't plan on ever getting rid of her no matter how broke I am.

Definitely poly. You would not want to do this to nitro.

I have a black les Paul custom and the previous owners wife scrubbed it with a dish washing sponge and abrasive side what do you think I need to do? As it’s a les Paul and I don’t want to screw it up ,
If it's lacquer you need to evenly scuff it and spay a new coat, if it's poly just polish it out.

It's sad but I bet there was a guy who kept pawning his guitar for drugs and got to the point where he thought that etching that into the guitar would not only be a constant reminder, but would also reduce the value of it to where he wouldnt be able to pawn it. I guess he slipped up.
We don't know the story, but I am sure pawn shops are full of stories like that, super sad.

I had a weird theory about this, on why you'd even do that to a guitar in the first place. It would be interesting if someone scratched that into their guitar with the intentions of never selling it, and it possibly got stolen and pawned off? Because the irony is too great & I know any thief can come up with a quick cover story of "fell on hard times, need the money" Just a thought, I'm actually going to carve that quote into my guitar right now LOL I don't plan on ever getting rid of her no matter how broke I am.
