    DEEP SNOW
    In the deep snow, and in snow banks you need to keep momentum.
    In other words, if the vehicle is moving, you need too keep it moving.
    Don't stop part way through the snow bank or deep snow. If you do, you're going to be doing the proverbial shovel.
    And know that when there's a lot of snow on the roads, it's going to push you around a bit, so go slow and use a deft touch on the steering wheel.
    THE FARTHER AWAY FROM MAIN ROADS
    Most important, the farther away from main road you get , the deeper the snow.
    Maintenance crew are going to plow, salt, and sand the major roads first.
    In the event of a heavy snowfall, it might be a couple of days before work crews get around to plowing your street.
    And for heavier, commercial vehicles, you may have to mount tire chains to get through the 'dad gum' snow.
    Good luck on your road test.

    Dad always said to keep a shovel, keep momentum slow and steady making as little stops as possible, going downhill is better than uphill, use mats to drive in case you get stuck, keep cool, and most of all be patient.

    My biggest thing is to always bring an extra shovel in your backseat...you may be prepared how to drive and have snow tires but others on the road may block you from being stuck so it helps to speed up the jam process. this happened so many times last year that i was held back from other drivers

    Awesome video! The one thing I'd like to clarify for people who are new to controlling the throttle, especially in cars with significant power, is that abrupt engagement of the throttle can cause the tires to loose traction fairly easy, so it is best to have smooth throttle transitions. Eventually you will want to get to the point to where you feel the tires losing traction and let off the throttle just enough to where they can regain traction. Then you can start to roll into the throttle again, slowly.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  3 года назад +1

      Good point! Yes, it takes a bit of practice to know when there's too much throttle. All the best, Cheers Rick

    lived in buffalo my whole life, been driving for 22 years since i was 16…. because of the lake effect from niagara falls we get a different “consistency” of snow here, and it’s slushier and heavier, so sometimes your tires will spin you will go down in place and it will look like you are able to get out but you aren’t, and you need people to rock your car back and for the get out of the that spot…. main point , don’t slam on the gas in slushy snow, and on turns where to plowed snow has piled up either drive around it if you can, OR get a head start and plow through it and don’t turn your wheel or hit the gas while you are going through it,,,, get enough force in your lead up to clear it with your back tires, and then when you are through it, start putting on the gas and moving forward before you turn the wheel. You always want to make sure that your tires are already turning pretty quickly before you start to turn….

    Another great video Rick! Really helpful especially with the snow storm we had here in Chilliwack.
    Can you also make a video on the topic Hazard Perception. I was wondering if there are stock answers that examiners wants to hear. And you're the only RUclipsr that is very good in doing scenarios and examples it would be amazing if you make a video of you driving and we figure out what hazard we see and compare it to your answer.
    I hope you'd consider this and thank you for always sharing your knowledge to us!

      Hi Eryn Lolarga - Thank you for your great comment and endorsement. I'm thinking about your great suggestion. I have been thinking about how to do a video on Hazard Perception because it is such a difficult topic to teach. Chilliwack is not that far from Vernon - perhaps you and I could do a video together and compare interpretations of the roadway. By comparing what we see and how we interpret things differently, it could be a learning experience for other smart drivers. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. All the best, Cheers Rick

      Smart Drive Test Hi Rick! Thanks for the reply, you really are amazing with communicating with your subscribers. I took my road test last week here in Chilliwack but I failed due to missed shoulder checks and 360 checks when I'm parking and doing a 3-Pount turn nevertheless the examiner said my driving was perfect.I was able to book another one but it's gonna be in Burnaby since that's the earliest one here in lower mainland. I asked about Hazard Perception cuz I noticed on my Dad's and Brother's result sheet that the Burnaby location tends to love asking Hazzards on the road and they quite missed a couple so I was wondering if ICBC Road Test Examiners are very strict and would cause me to fail again if I didn't give enough answers. I would like to ask if you should give them a 10/10 answer to pass you or will a 5 or 7 out of 10 hazards is enough? And thanks for the offer but work is preventing me to have a drive out there in Vernon nor do I have the equipment to record a video of me driving to send to you. I highly appreciate all the work you put into your educational videos and wish me luck on my 2nd try.
      All the best, Eryn

    The only time I've had to get a car out from a high center of snow was when my fiance forgot how to back up straight. She spun and spun to get out, but all I had to do was straighten her tires up with the tracks she made, and it had traction. Engine weight on top of front wheel drive helped. Not too sure if that would work in rwd.

    Don't know if this is any use -
    I live in the SW WA area, near the mountains. Decided to visit a hiking trail trailhead that I had visited before during my spring break, in my 1994 Honda Accord (EX, with sunroof and good audio).
    The trailhead was only at about 1500 feet elevation, and it was the end of march - usually, everything at that elevation melts by this time of year, but... not that year. I made it past a few snow banks, old, icy horrid semislush, and kept going, since I was already close and thought there was no way there could be more snow. The road was a gravelly forest road, so it has these occasional dips, about 50 feet long and only a foot in depth, and isn't perfectly flat. Later in the year these just become puddles, no issue. But I, in my wisdom, decided I had enough clearance, and enough momentum.
    I had neither. Nor did I have a shovel. Had to hike back 4 miles to a state park, then 4 miles back uphill to dig myself out. A few minutes after I got stuck tho, a guy in a black 4runner appeared on the road, about 500 feet behind me. Usually, people help out in these sorts of circumstances. Not that guy tho. He turned around and left. The part of the road he was on had literally no snow, the drifts were really super occasional.
    Sometimes, momentum will lead you to lose control, but your ground clearance is not enough. It's all up to you, but you can either 1. risk wrecking your car OR 2. Turn around, go back. I should have chosen 2, but chose 3. - Get stuck.
    To top it all off - none of my "water resistant" gear held up to the rain, and so I got soaked, and so did my spare clothes.

    thoughts on double clutching when driving in snow? Since by letting clutch out in neutral quickly before shifting, it gets the wheels, flywheel,driveshaft, clutch, all moving at same speed before changing gears, allowing for smoother shift and less likely to cause wheel spin?

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  2 года назад +1

      You are correct my friend. And you're going to get a smoother shift. When you downshift, I suspect that you blip the throttle to get the revs in the transmission to increase and match the speed of that with the drive train. All the best, Cheers Rick

    • @wes1934
      @wes1934 2 года назад

      @@smartdrivetest Yes, blip throttle to d-shift. Overall though I find it best to keep the revs low, around 2000rpm, whichever gear that requires at a given time. Going downhill revs can be a little higher if lower gear for engine braking is used, or if you'd prefer not to use foot brakes (i prefer not to). Its funny because learning to drive well in snow it really gives you good driving habits to use when it's clear. I generally gain 3-4 mpg driving in snow perhaps because I'm just keeping rpm low (not too low to where it's lugging,, but just above lugging), 1600-2200 rpm) most of time. Thanks for your video. So much with driving can be hard to communicate, but you've done the legwork and have shown some great techniques in action. I find driving in the snow enjoyable now.

      @@smartdrivetest Sure, even with chains many vehicles wouldn't survive 30 inches without the speed it would take to plow through such snow of more than 20 feet in distance. Many air damns in the front of cars would prevent it as many are too close to the ground which would cause damage....but trying in a Honda is fun indeed.

And you are correct my friend; too many cars are simply too low to the ground and would either high-centre or pile up so much snow in front that the vehicle would simply bog down. My Honda--so long as it doesn't high-centre--will go through a lot of snow, but probably not 20" inches unless I had chains. Even with chains, I'd be worried about breaking something from the torque on the drive train. All the best, Cheers Rick

    I appreciate the quality but when the car is stuck in the snow id rather not watch all of the character development. Lmao

      Hi Scuba Diver - Thank you for your comment and suggestion. Here is a video on ABS: ruclips.net/video/lSYHQqEytxI/видео.html&index=14&list=PL0x-bChcUvwFFnxUL6kvYzblEScDkhPWk The video for traction control is yet to come my friend. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick

    In most instances when driving in snow, apply throttle gently, not pumping hard like you showed with your foot in this video. That is a sure way to spin the tires and get sideways.

      Hi Ed Smith - Thank you for your comment. You are correct. In most instances, you want to go gently on the throttle. If the snow is deep however, you're going to have to be a bit more aggressive to get enough momentum to move through the deep snow. All the best, Cheers Rick

    a lot of people don.t like driving in the snow.

      That is obvious my friend. I suggest that if people don't like driving in the snow, that they find alternative forms of transportation. Unfortunately, they're a danger to themselves and others on the road. Cheers Rick

      Hi meep - Thank you for your comment. And I too once thought as you do my friend...that PhD = rich. Nope, in fact there are a lot of well educated people that don't have money. Have a read of Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad; Poor Dad. All the best, Cheers Rick

      I'm not sure I entirely agree. But that's a personal opinion. Most cars will get going, but getting them stopped in slippery conditions is about the same. All the best, Cheers Rick

    Get out of town and drive around. Everything you drove through already had a vehicle through it.
